- dignan2681, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm going to use Google Sidebar on the right, Windows Sidebar on the left. Objectdock on the top and my taskbar on the bottom. I have just reduced my 21" monitor to 10". Hooray!
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Guide for XP, for those of you to lazy to read the thing before you say it's only on vista.
http://www.tech-recipes.com/microsoft_vista_tips1020.html - joehorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it works on xp see: http://img215.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sidebar6tp.jpg
- Webjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Works for me. Too bad it's useless.
- Kimera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3to clearifiy what has been written above:
IT DOES WORK WITH XP, FOLLOW THE DAMN GUIDE
I got it working and its fine, its basic and pointless yes, but that'll change when its actually released and developers can use the sidebar to add some very good 'Parts' but at the moment, Google Deskbar is such a better alternative. - davak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hey, guys... Davak from tech-recipes here. Thanks for the traffic. I'm trying to keep the recipe up for you guys.

http://www.bronch.com/downloads/ - comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you people read, you would know that on the Tech Recipes link there is a big bold link to instructions to get it running on Windows XP. People really need to start paying attention to what is on the page before they write back complaining about stuff.
My opinion on it is that is a nice little thing to play with, for about 30 seconds. Really, there is no point to it, I'm glad they turned it off by default in the latest build. It does look nice, but it is completely worthless. - dominiccarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is very cool. It gets a digg from me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If only there was a way to "dock" my AIM Buddy List window into this thing. It already takes up the same space, only I'd be able to get more functionality out of the same amount of screen real estate.
- MRSA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No. Tech-Recipes is up.
Page Generation: 0.13 Seconds
Digg as much for the comments as the original link! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah maybe i need a wider monitor but i never really liked sidebars.. and it is SO old.. Microsoft freaking out about googles.. well i will use that one as much as i do all others.. cute but no
widgets too.. cute for a while.. last thing i need is for my desktop to look like my room:cluttered
while i am at it.. hate browser toolbars too.. my real estate is to valuable to waste. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it just me, or is TechRecepies down?
- denied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, it works. The clock is cool, nothing to write home about though.
- abeerge30, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yahoo Konfabulator is better designed, you can move the widgets anywhere on the screen, not just some area off to the right. There isn't very many widgets for this thing either. Konfabulator has thousands of Widgets, soon to be millions now that its free.
- supremechees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2is this for xp? because the instructions say extract the file to the "vista" drive
- caldaean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like how the working area gets reduced to about 25-30% of the screen. Kind of explains why all windows-users are so stubborn about maximizing their browser windows. Guess they wouldn't see anything if they didn't.
- flipper5311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i say desktop sidebar is better:
http://www.desktopsidebar.com/
it has many useful extensions and cool skins.i use it to read RSS news.dont use much system resources like google sidebar - neonicacid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't know if anyone's going to take a look down all this way at my post.. but I'll try anyway..
I was looking around at some of the files for the sidebar itself, and if you open up the .part files with WinRAR you can get inside and look at all the .pngs and scripts inside.. It shouldn't be too long before we see custom scripts and skins for the newly leaked Sidebar...
~Neonicacid - Tordenflesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would i need this? I already use Desktop Sidebar. Nothing Vista for me, thank you!
- defylogik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2now windows users can experience what mac users have known for years. :) except faster. :(
- EvilBaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It'll work, but you will probably have to copy the two patch files from the first post. That's what I had to do.
- Kimera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg. Actualy wanted this for a while now :D now i don't even have to upgrade, needs more 'Parts' though :D
- retr0spectiv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Twit: Its for VISTA. Not XP. The Directory Structure in Vista is different from XP. In XP, the 'profile directory' is "Documents and Settings", whereas in Vista it is (obviously guessing) "Users"
- anti-net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pointless, yet cool!
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google sidebar for me if anything. but normally I don't have it active. Takes up to much space.
- davak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Main server is tweaked and working well again...
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This thing's so useless it doesn't deserve ANY of my screen space, let alone the huge chunk it occupies.
- nuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2at first i thought the idea of widgets/gadgets/desklets was cool, but unless you're using AfterStep or XFCE on linux, they just clutter the screen and eat up memory.
- bjtitus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is awesome just because you can do it. I mean, it's obviously useless with no new gadgets or anything, but its pretty cool to be able to have it on your computer.
I'll continue to use Konfabulator and GDS tho. - MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2already have one on my mac no thanks but nice digg anyways
- MaxxSmart, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2Here is the direct link to the files guys, enjoy:
http://rapidshare.de/files/5222825/windows.sidebar.5219.jcxp.rar.html - Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No thanks. I'll wait for ReactOS to be stable and DRM (Democracy Removal Managment) free.
- bronch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Site is up... just slow here.
- EvilBaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For me it was F:Documents and SettingsRich
hope that helps.
Now, can somebody tell me what the google searchbar URL is? - bronch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry the mirror is so ugly... I didn't add in the CSS to try to keep it lean. Once again, I appreciate all your comments and hits.
- kyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used google deskbar for a while but i noticed that when it would start indexing it would maximize processor usage. i eventually uninstalled it. now i don't use any sidebar.
- ForumTroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For all the people saying that this is not for Windows XP read the forums linked in the first comment in this thread. The article is talking about a recent Windows Vista build however the sidebar has been ported to Windows XP. I have installed it and it does work; surprisingly enough it's actually very light on memory usage as well. However, I find it fairly useless and a waste of screen real estate and it has already been removed from my Windows system. Perhaps, once more widgets/gadgets (whatever they feel like calling them today) have been created by the community it will become more useful. I am a big fan of gdesklets ( http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ ) so I would like to see something similar when I’m forced to use Windows.
P.S. Yes, I know about Konfabulator but I hate it for other reasons. - grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2anyone mirror the sidebar rar, that file download website hates my computers.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe a better link for this story is www.smartbarxp.com :)
Haven't used it for ages, but a beta version (When I was still using WindowsME) was pretty usefull, and had a bunch of plugins etc
Thought the google sidebar is not too bad...
- Ben - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2theone3, it's in there. It's just not enabled by default.
- Vision77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I say Desktopsidebar is better...Desktopsidebar.com
It has better plugins. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, don't bother, Google Sidebar is way better. (Although it is cooler looking)
- bwilkins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Didn't work for me.
- ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Looks ALOT like KDE!!!!
- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Umm, this isn't for XP. It's for the early Vista build.
- nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The patch is here

The missing file here

- bensibensa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2honestly you have to be a duchbag to have that on your computer...
i am speechless, but ahhh well, who cares - Timit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is Old, I mean really OLD!
From http://blog.uxevolutions.com/zoronax
"As you may have heard, the Sidebar from Windows Vista was leaked onto the internet weeks ago. Rafael and I have been working hard since PDC '05 to bring you the same Sidebar working on Windows XP. Although we have some wrinkles to iron out, we decided to put out our patch and a preliminary build of our new emulation library. Just download our small package small package, extract its contents to the same directory containing Sidebar and the 'Default Parts' directory, and launch patch.exe.
