- Nysul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10What are you talking about? They practically killed the palm OS.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11WM6 is a fairly minor upgrade--the next one should be a doozy. There are still quite a few new features though:
* You can search through your e-mail now, even remote messages stored on Exchange server
* HTML Email support
* Expanded hotkey support
* Timeline overview in calendar (let's you see what time is busy and free easily)
* Better Windows Live integration
* Multiparty IM with file transfer capability
* Internet sharing
* Mobile office apps have been improved, particularly for smartphones, er, Windows Mobile 6 Standard devices, can now edit documents
* Smart Dial lets you dial by names rather than numbers for phones
* Contacts now show call history - ArminPiTT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7small market share where? in the US, the market share is about 90%......the rest of the world, its on fire, it might not be the best phone OS, but Nokia is shaking in its boots. and Linux on mobiles is waiting for the kill......
- hungryduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The calculator app still looks the one in windows CE.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nothing should be compared to Windows ME unless you have substantial proof it's a steaming pile of dog *****. I'd say it's probably closer to what Windows 98 Second Edition was to Win98. Nothing to get excited about, but still a few improvements and a decent OS.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Man Microsoft windows mobile still looks like ***** *****.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7MS and LG announced LG's touchscreen phones will run WiMo6; I hope the Adobe-designed UI on the Prada & LG phone runs WiMo6 underneath -- that Prada phone is ***** sweet.
- nutcase, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Engadgets gallery sucks. Can't they spiff that up a bit??
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Those are such minor changes. I wonder why they would give it a whole new version number. I think they are just trying to make it seem like it is a new product to compete with other newer devices and software coming out in the spring/summer. They could at least have put in a better user interface. More icons and menus and less bars and screens.
Maybe it will fix memory problems the current one has. I can open three programs and then close all three and memory will be lost until I restart. That is lame. - thesauce, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11I have an Audiovox PPC-6700 that uses WM5, and honestly, I don't see a single difference from those screenshots between WM5 and WM6 except for the Windows Live integration.
And solitaire looks better. You can hardly tell which cards are black and which are red on the WM5 version. - abid786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't know about upgrades from WM5, but this probably is the nail in the coffin for PalmOS, at least in the PDA (non-smartphone) sector.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Windows Mobile 7 (codenamed Photon) is a major rewrite. It'll give all the iPhone fans something to complain Microsoft copied despite the fact it was in the works since before the iPhone was ever announced. Among other things it's supposed to have a new kernel, integrate the two versions of Windows Mobile and provide a customizable user interface.
- grogan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you have an idea for an application for this operating system, you can make it happen. The user interface of the iPhone seems more thought-out, but does anyone seriously think that Apple can out-think everyone else in the world?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, which in turn look identical to the previous Windows Mobile. Like you said they need to just start over with WM. Maybe not their kernel and everything under the hood, but at the very least they need to scrap their UI and start fresh and create something usable.
- sesante2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Still looks boring, even with the vista eye candy.
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeh whatever, is Wifi sync back yet? Otherwise I'm sticking with 2003SE.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Fonts still look like crap. Would it kill them to be able to include some nicer fonts? That's one of those small touches that usually go unnoticed but just make the whole OS look better.
Fonts are something MS did well with Vista and something that Apple has done well since OSX came out. - nickerbocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What ever neat features Microsoft will put in Mobile 5 for Smartphones, Verizon Wireless will strip them out and try to sell them back to you.
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's a Prada phone? You've gotta be kidding me.. I had no idea.
- acdc1174, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only upgrade that matters is the one that keeps my phone from crashing or freezing up. I have been a WM/PPC user for years, but STABILITY has never been their strong suit.
- TopBanana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a WM5 phone and it's a truly awful phone to use. I only use it as a 3G modem now.
Windows Mobile needs a bottom up re-design. Unfortuantely these screenshots look nearly identical. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well thank god for that man! I'll hold off on any pda/smart phone device till WM7 comes out. The iPhone looks nice, and I like my Apple products I own but I live in Canada, it's expensive, and who knows when it's getting here or which provider they'll be with. I doubt I'll get one soon.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2alaby?
- ZSX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From geek.com http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2007Feb/lab20070207002377.htm
"I now use IE Mobile without thinking twice, which says a lot for the improvements. It also supports the latest Mobile AJAX standards, so get ready for some great Mobile-based apps from Microsoft."
I know Opera already have mobile AJAX on their mobile browser, but it is good to see IE implementing it as well. - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good luck. I haven't seen one yet.
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7It's not just a visual thing, there are other enhancments as well
The thing I'm looking forward most to, is the probably the internet sharing. I never thought I'd use my phone as a modem as much as I do, even my desktop. Being able to let everyone in on it would just be that much better - aydoubleyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know what's new in this release? Just looks like a nicer interface as far as I can tell.
- aydoubleyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When does this come out?
- Stuntaneous, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3theres something laughable about "Get to know it with pictures", i feel like ive been invited cordially by an old man to meet his wife.
or something similar to that. - jamesrdorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't seem like much has change.... new more glassy theme & a Windows Live sync utility... the Windows Mobile Experience still seems... lonely... there is something missing... way too much white, and emptiness of the interface... kinda bulky really... but I am a fan of the Palm OS 5 on the Treo's myself =)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeeeeup! You said it mate!
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To offer Java support Sun needs to port their VM to the device. The last time that MS made a Java implementation they almost got sued into oblivion.
- alchemista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You would have thought that by now the UI would have at least moved into a new generation. This type of mobile UI has been around now for several years, the basic radio buttons, checkboxes, etc, all layed out in a very boxed style. Until we get a better UI, these mobile devices will always be 2nd class citizens.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But will you purchase it?
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Maybe it will fix memory problems the current one has. I can open three programs and then close all three and memory will be lost until I restart. That is lame."
When you "close" a program in Windows Mobile it doesn't really close. By design it keeps the program running so that it will remember its state and be ready quicker when you need it again (and possibly other reasons I've forgotten). I'm not sure I agree with that decision but it's not a bug. You can actually kill a program by going into the "memory" section on one of the settings pages, or there are 3rd party utilities that add a true close button to applications. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hello? Hello? PDA market? You do realise the PDA market is dead and buried by the smartphone market don't you? Bloody hell, you Yanks haven't got a clue when it comes to mobile, or the future of personal computing (that's those funny little mobile phone things again by the way).
Next you're going to tell me Windows 3.1 has been big in the Intel 286 market for years.... - etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like a theme to me. I'll probably still put it on my MDA when it comes out.
- jamesrdorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God I hope so, that's really why I swiched to Palm OS 5 on the Treo... Windows seems to lagg, really bad on most task... where as the Treo is just about instant to the touch.
- tybris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Who's talking about phones? WM has been the biggest OS in the PDA market for years...
- Optimaximal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My O2 XDA Orbit (Windows Mobile 5) comes with Sun's MIDlet Manager, so it shouldn't be too hard.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3They (Apple) generally appear to do so regularly. So why not with the iPhone?
- HesNikke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1did EtherGnat just call Win98SE a 'decent' OS? i've yet to see a decent OS from Microsoft. Win2K comes closest, but it's still far short of decent! why can't they just go back to focusing on ONE good product? once apon a time that good product was MS-BASIC. now it's the XBox.
- Torx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1you brought back some memories with that one!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Listen all you pro-WM6 monkey boyz. As someone who works with top people in the mobile industry worldwide, let me just tell you: WM has NO respect. Over here in Europe it is a joke to be laughed at. Really. You guys need to "get with the program" and realise this. MS don't have a chance in the mobile phone world. NOT A CHANCE. The enlightened ones amongst you have already seen the light by adopting Symbian, or something else. iPhone does look promising - possibly, but there are still some serious caveats there for big time success (like opening up to developers etc.).
Mark my words. WM is another Gizmondo.
Cheers - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Give an example in the computing sector then.
- ejsocom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I wanna see a screenshot of a blue screen of death.
- brodie7838, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2WM6 is what Windows ME was to Windows 98, from the looks of it. But who knows, I remember the first betas of Longhorn, it didn't look much different from XP back then, but now look at it.
- diggmaddy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5That's exactly my thought. I've owned the T-Mobile MDA running WM5 for over 10 months now and I don't see a single difference other than a different (prettier? don't think so) skin. Again, a long awaited product launch from Microsoft with not much work put into it. Honestly, not just for the sake of MS bashing.
- jamesrdorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Windows mobile doesnt have traps for total crashes, it just freezes. that's the real reason the stylist has a sharp point, so press the reset button.
