- ReRunx5, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29WGA workaround: WinRAR needed!
-Extract installer (mpsetup.exe)
-run wmp11.exe in folder (not setup_wm.exe)
-restart your pc,
-run three other exe's in extracted folder (not setup_wm.exe)
---------------------------------
Test if it works, if not: do this:
-Rename wmplayer.exe in C:Program FilesWindows Media Player to something else,
-Extract wmp11.exe (already in your first extracted folder), and
-copy wmplayer.exe from that folder to your program files folder - teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29I'm trying it out right now. WMP11 still insists on using the name 'AC;DC' rather than 'AC/DC'
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25The biggest advantage is that is has a very comprehensive system for cataloging your music and video library, rivaling Apple's iTunes player. If you don't care about this feature in your media player of choice, stick with whatever you have now. Otherwise, this might be a useful upgrade for you.
The days of storing and searching for your files in directories and sub-directories broken up by genre are long gone. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24well, i tried something like this and it worked :)
here's "my" instructions...
^^ first few steps exactly the same...
expectedly, windows media player stops working...
now, extract wmp11.exe in that folder using winrar.
bunch of files...
i executed the following files: (was a hit and a miss thing..and i hit :)
wmlaunch.exe
wmpenc.exe
next, go inside the update folder...
and click on update.exe
it will supposedly reinstall media player 11...
now run it..
mod my comment if it worked for you :)

Still wish I could open multiple windows like I do with VLC, that would be nice. - mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9What on earth is a link to softpedia doing on digg? Honestly, that site is a click-whore. Why not link directly to the page at Microsoft? Hang on a sec, Microsoft *themselves* even link to softpedia: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/community/mediaplayer.mspx . What is the world coming to?

Ummmm....... Anyone who has an Apple logo on their system? - floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10What's wrong with Windows Genuine Advantage? It only validates Windows once and then you're fine... unless you have a pirated copy.
p.s.
I agree with you ilyag, but I would call 'success' on the program if it is not letting pirated copies access some of the features. Although, that thought right there is going to get me modded down.
Despite what people may think of windows (e.g. it sucks); either don't use it, or pay for the one you have. Then again I'm a pirate-convert. - Jamezes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Downloading right now... I have hope for this version, but I suspect it will still be the bloated stuff I've known for years.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I seriously doubt that your SLI videocards have ANYTHING to do with this, at ALL. But thanks for bragging, you rich, lucky bastard! :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6On my system, Winamp 5 uses 17 MB, WMP10 uses 14 MB, and iTunes uses 42 MB. The number you cite is a steep ***** price to pay in system performance just to play some music...
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ooh, your system just got beat by a Celeron. I just installed this on a celeron 1.4Ghz, w 1 gig of ram and integrated video, and it scrolls through 30 gigs of music just fine, no hiccups. I think this might replace iTunes for me because iTunes is a huge memory hog, and the only thing I like it for is podcasts. Can Wmp 11 automatically download podcasts? That would be a great feature.
- RobbieCrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A combo of both worked for me.
Extracted to I:wmp11
Then from I:wmp11:
Ran wmp11.exe
Rebooted
Ran wmfdist11.exe
Ran umdf.exe
Ran wmdbexport.exe (this didn't seem to do a goddamned thing)
Tried running WMP, got version error
Rebooted
Ran wmp11.exe and watched where it extracted to.
Changed to that Dir. Copied all files in Update folder to another directory.
Closed WMP setup.
Ran update.exe
Ran WMP no problems.
All codecs are still working, no problems what so ever. - Yuffie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Best bet would be a torrent link
- linus7, on 10/12/2007, -13/+18VLC is the ONLY way to go. I was a little hesitant at first, but it will do almost Anything and Everything you want in a media player...
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - GoodAtSomeStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This thing looks great. The install was quick and easy, it just transfered my settings from wmp 10. The install seems to have removed wmp 10 completely so I guess you would have to reinstall it if there were any problems.
- znutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm an avid Windows Meida Player user. Don't ask why, it's just what I've used since I've had a PC (around 10 years) and I've stuck with it. So far this version is the best. Here's why.
1. It looks amazing. The design is gorgeous and very eye pleasing.
2. When switching to the mini-player,after a few seconds of inactivity, the player switches to a trasnparent mode that still allows for control, but does not interfere with browsing the web, viewing pictures, etc.
3. The included equalizer surpasses that of any previous versions. My music never sounded so rich and full.
4. The library has many options for organizing, playing, tracking, and tagging your media. It is rival to that of everyones beloved iTunes.
5. The implementation once again of syncing your library to a portable media device is great for us non-ipod users. This version has a large improvement of the sync feature in that the two panes used, make for finding the tracks and playlists you wish to transfer a breeze.
6. The memory usage is far less than that of iTunes
There are a couple of downfalls:
1. As of right now I haven't been able to find a feature to make "smart" playlists based on track information, length, year, genre, etc. You can organize your library into these categories and manually drag and drop a playlist, but I have not found an automatic way to do this. If someone could cue me in on this I would appreciate it.
2. The music store it integrets into the player is called URGE (MTV Microsoft). While this service is ok. It definitely is not the iTunes Music Store.
I suggest you give this version of Windows Media Player a try if you have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. I am not a Microsoft toting machine (although the 360 kicks ass) but I do recommend this player. It is worth the update. - fuelvolts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Works great on my Emachines M6810 Athlon 64 Lappy w/512 RAM
Uses 13,760 Kb of RAM and ~8% cpu usage whilst mp3ing
Interface is MUCH nicer and library is great - I think I just switched from iTunes! - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16the problem with wmp is not that it's bloated.. it's just *****. and it crashes if you caress it the wrong direction..
it has difficulty doing the most simple of tasks.. the only good thing about it is that it starts up quickly.. (we'll see how that changes with wmp11) - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5so... it can't then...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7...Huh? Both of those sites use Flash video. Am I missing something?
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was only interested on testing the Library....
here are some screenies:

The library has undergone some slight improvements, very responsive. I like the feature of "paste album art", like you can google image an artist and copy the pic on the clipboard (without locally saving) then go back to WMP11 and paste it there and it will be automatically edit. Pretty neat I'd say. Less tiresome than in Itunes.
But other than that, nothing really compelling that'd make me shift to WMP11, and stick with Itunes library browser's simplicity. 2 cents. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Where did you even buy a computer that did NOT come with Windows pre-installed, forcing you to pirate it? I'm honestly curious because, wanting a newer PC, I'm having a hard time finding any retailer selling high-performing, stable systems WITHOUT a required purchase of Windows XP (which I obviously already got for my current PC). You'd have to really go out of your way to find a way to avoid paying the Window tax.
- Koskun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just find it so funny when people complain about it having Genuine Advantage, and having to use a work around (if they are going to download and install it) because they are running a pirated copy.
A copy of the upgrade is not that expensive. If you are in college/university odds are that you can get a copy free (maybe) or for ten bucks or so from the school. Microsoft Volume Liscense makes it very simple, and completely legal. - kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Perfect workaround https://daydream.wordpress.com/2006/05/14/wmp11-wga-workaround/
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Uses 52,000 K of memory on my 512 MB system when playing just an MP3. I forgot how that compares to WMP10, but, it seems extremely high.
iTunes uses 54,000 K, so I suppose it's not that high.
I don't know how all that compares to VLC player. - sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8People who build their own machines don't have access to XP, unless they spend an outrageous price for a copy.
Windows Genuine Advantage can kiss my genuine ass - even if you do pirate windows, you're still using it. Which probably means you'll be buying hardware, software, and all kinds of other wonderful crap which is only possible if you're using Microsoft's software. I doubt Bill is losing any sleep over my burnt copy. - Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow, I REALLY love this. It looks GORGEOUS. (i have it set on pink and black, the blue would make me puke) And I love the new organization. It's just... wow! I love it.
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4WMP 11 uses 20,400 K of RAM and 55,300 K Virtual memory. Playing the same mp3 in iTunes, it uses: 45,700 K of RAM and 40,000 K Virtual memory. I am currently on Pentium M 2 Ghz w/ 1 GB RAM.
As a side question, when is Diggnation 45 being released? - teh1337one, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm waiting for the official beta by Microsoft, because this download seems pretty sketchy imho. Four days wait isn't that much for me.
- TA_Superman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not if you go to download video and click it. It will open up WMP and stream it. Normally it would stream fine under WMP 10, but with WMP 11 Beta it just buffers then crashes, crankygeeks won't even play. Errm anyone know how to revert back to WMP 10, can't seem to figure it out
- pickupjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have use the ghettobacon method, and it works very well !
If someone need a screenshot : http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/628/wmp11pickupjojo5zi.jpg
... It's beautiful, but I prefer iTunes and VLC. ;-) - ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Really. The last I bought a "system" was 1992 (not counting laptops), and I've got quite a few machines I've built.
- McoreD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The Good
Writes ID3 tags to the physical file regardless where the rip folder is
Windows Media Audio 10 Professional codec
Windows Media Audio 9.2 codec
Expanded tile view
Live search
Very responsive media library
The Bad
Aggressively replaces my high quality 600x600 Folder.jpg files with a 200x200 Folder.jpg hidden system file
Does not notify the user when ID3 tag writing fails
Does not let remove monitor folders (only ignore)
The Ugly
Some albums get a blank Album Art despite having Folder.jpg
With some albums, have to edit Album Artist to get all the tracks under one album
Some tracks don’t get album art detected from Folder.jpg - NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Damn this is one worthy digg. I needed an upgrade on my library interface. I swear I was just about to go back to iTunes
- Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SP2 was fixed a LONG time ago. Time to upgrade.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Media Player Classic is my favorite; tiny memory footprint, no shiny bloated crap, highly practical, plays anything and everything with the right codec pack
