- AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35What if we're already at the suffering stage?!

- mvent2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20And if you did buy the software but it reports as non genuine...?
The site appears to have been Dugg already: http://duggmirror.com/software/Windows_Genuine_Advantage_Notifications_Nag_Screen/ - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Gosub hell Microsoft!
(I run parallels) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5gamerzworld,
The bonus is this: the machine came with no restore disc. Plus, the fan whines loudly every hour or so (resonance), but hey, at least *that* isn't MS' fault... - rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@MiddleGirth
You have it all backwards, we're at the suffering stage with Microsoft. Our suffering has lead to hate, our hate has lead to anger, our anger has caused fear at MS head office. - briggsb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks like Vista will have even tougher WGA requirements...
http://www.bbspot.com/News/2006/09/microsoft-vista-wga.html - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7leave this thread alone, everyone's being stupid
- TimboTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@chris9902 - msconfig is about as useless as ***** on a bull when removing crapware. It lists the contents of two startup files and two registry keys, which the majority of crapware is FULLY aware of and immune to. I would have to say Autoruns from Sysinternals is the tool that provides the most comprehensive list of startup objects for a Windows based system.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I say cut the price in half, then you might cut down on piracy and actually make more money in the process.
When I used XP back in the day, I allways had this feeling of big brother watching me. You can make all the anti-Linux jokes you want, but I feel much free-er switching to Linux. Allthough it's a bitch to learn some times, I wouldn't go back. And yes, I paid for a box version of SUSE. I could have downloaded it for free, but I like to support my software and the rest of the little ***** who make it. :-)
Oh, if you've every used Amarok, you'll never want to go back to Windows Media Player again. I just wish there was a Windows version I could send a link to my family to use.
What were we talking about again, oh yeah piracy. Yeah you should probably support the software you use by paying for it. If you don't pay for Windows then you really in your heart don't support it, so you just switch to an alternative OS or pay for it.
I support Linux and I pay for it, enough said. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My Dad bought a brand new Dell with WinXP Home. It started nagging about being counterfeit ~1 week after purchase. Dell was useless in helping, and I had to install one of the WGA uninstallers - now he can't get Windows Update on the web. Thanks Microsoft.
And to those who say "buy it, mine activated no problem" - my Dad's Dell is the perfect example of why this WGA nonsense is so bad. Without me, he'd see that "counterfeit" popup everyday, on a machine he paid full price for, with Windows pre-installed... - LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Try MuBlinder or AutoPatcher.

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89
My vote is for MuBlinder. - joelthelion2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'll probably get downmodded, but IMHO the best method to get rid of WGA and the like for good is to get rid of windows and microsoft products alltogether. There are good (not perfect, but good enough for most people) free equivalents, there aren't a lot of valid reasons not to make the switch.
- xr56n44, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4dude, are you daft? msft stopped support on win98 long ago; there will be no more updates.
- in4mation, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I would rather say: If all companies would pay for all their versions then Bill Gates would be much richer and home and educational users would still be paying for their versions of Windows. ;-)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7That link had such a short life.
- doctorcaligari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For individual updates try http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/updates/#Win98SE
For a makeshift service pack that has everything, try http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
Probably the best option is to install XP and have it run in "Classic" mode. It looks like Win98, but has the stability of XP. That what I do for my older users at work who are resistant to change. - taotehue, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11with vista coming out a like $200, I think Microsoft will be having even more problems with pirated software.
the other problem is that a lot of people don't want the software that comes with their dell/emachine/hp/whatever with all that crap installed. so they go and get a pirated version. Microsoft would be wise to eliminate the licensing that those companies use and only allow them to install clean versions of the OS, and actually supply a real install disk as opposed to an image. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Vista can go scratch... I am not about to purchase a OS that is more expensive then the system it is running on. Microsoft is smoking too much crack when it comes to pricing Vista.
- rolfeman02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It did come with a way to reinstall....All dellls after some time in 2004 started doing it...at the start-up screen saying DELL, hit ctrl+F11, and it will reinstall everything to the way it was when you bought the machine....the restore cd is just on a partioned section of the hard drive.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yes, but DugMirror saves the day: http://duggmirror.com/software/Windows_Genuine_Advantage_Notifications_Nag_Screen/
- devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I am not buying at that price point and I am not buying a bastardized version of Windows. make it $80 for pro and $40 for home and their will be significantly less piracy.
You can't expect the piracy to go down when your pricing is so ridiculous. - Makurosu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cybertragic, try this:
http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
It's an alternate update site that I use sometimes. I don't know if it will work on Win98, but it's worth a try. Good luck! - Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This isn't just about stealing Windows. Last week I spent eight hours taking apart a long-broken laptop to solder on a new power socket. Finally reassembled the whole thing, plugged it in -- it worked, for the first time in several months. Downloaded some updates, rebooted the machine, and sure enough WGA detected my factory-installed Windows installation as invalid. I could've gone through hell with MS support (didn't have any documentation for the laptop or anything), or I could've run a few google searches and taken care of the problem.
This ridiculous policy can only inconvenience people with legal installations. Anyone smart enough to pirate Windows is smart enough to google for the fix. - HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's one thing not to own or have complete control over software packages you use...quite another when that software package is your OS and controls everything you do with your computer.
So I just say no to WGA or any other information trolling/customer tracking. Microsoft gets my money and NOTHING else. If enough features/support gets locked behind WGA, Windows will become worthless. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just use XP-antispy. Easy.
http://www.xp-antispy.org/ - MrLunk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6If all companies would pay for all their versions then MS Windows could be allmost free for educational and home users wich would make more people more productive (as far as win lets you ) wich in turn would be very good for the economy...
on the other hand...
does Microsoft need any extra money ?
dun think so
grtz - taotehue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would like to see you get rid of the Norton Root-kit with MSConfig. after ten minutes your dell-ware will still have a bloated registry.
BTW, my copy of windows is legit.
In my comments above, all that I am saying is the Microsoft paints a big target on itself to get pirated through its pricing and structure.
For the kid who has to have something to use, doesn't understand Linux and doesn't have any dough, pirated Microsoft is the way to go. maybe someday Linux will be understood enough by the mainstream for mass adoption, but until then Microsoft could really do itself a favor by having a more intelligent scheme to stem the tide of its problems.
on a separate note, Bill does seem to do wonderful things for the world with his money. - cybertragic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well yeah, I very well know that there won't be anymore updates and haven't been for sometime. What I was asking is if I haven't installed the previous updates which were released when MS was supporting 98, how do I install those.
And yeah I know I should just update to XP, but well, my dad's in the happy zone with his good ol' machine and I don't think he'd be able to bear such a major change in his life at this point. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@chris9902 and Willsk1:
What about people who bought windows pre-loaded on a laptop and then reformatted the drive and tried to re-install from the backup partition only to find out that it won't validate because Microsoft wants you to buy *another* copy of Windows? - dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3375 diggs here, vs 13 there...
Looks like the diggPublic prefer this one. - drewskyjones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3LMAO, nice Link. My favorite quote from the article: "Privacy advocates say this move by Microsoft could force many users to alternative operating systems like Linux where a policy like this would be impossible because there are no Linux drivers available for retinal scanners." Yes, you have to read the article to get that...
- .Steven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I haven't installed it yet.
I just hid it in MS update. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Did you try re-installing Windows?

- callit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I have to agree. Buy the software, or stop bitching. OMGZ I DIDN"T PAY FOR IT NOW THEY'RE HARASSING ME.
If you own a legit copy and it doesn't validate PICK UP THE PHONE. It's a hell of a lot less hassle to call Microsoft and say "Hey, gimme a validation number" than it is to try to hack around all the WGA issues. I've done it. It's really not that bad.
On the other side, I also agree that the price might be a little high for some users - especially students. Many colleges do offer discounted or free legitimate versions of Windows. Even if you're not lucky enough to fall into this category, and do decide the only way to run your computer is with an illegal version of Windows, don't get angry at Microsoft for giving you a few extra stumbling blocks.
All I'm saying is people need to stop being so hard on Microsoft. I'm no fanboy by any means, and still think the software is overpriced, but Microsoft is where it's at for a reason. Their software is some of the most user friendly software available, and in areas where they've screwed up, other contenders are staking their claims (see: Firefox).
I used to be a Linux user on my desktop, and it was great when I had the time to play with it. I ended up switching back to Windows because I needed things to just work (and I'm waiting for the flak on that statement) but it's alot easier to just make things work in Windows - sometimes at the cost of stability or configurability, but those are sacrifices I'm willing to live with. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RemoveWGA

works every time - gbaderek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got a dell inspiron 1505 and dell doesn't give you the os disk anymore form some stupid reason. that makes me mad that they cant give you a cop of the os that you paid for. I paid for the os and its cd key so all I wanted was an actual disk with xp on it. Since they wont do that, I just downloaded windows and put it on a disk. I have a real cd key so I see nothing wrong with getting a pirated version and then using my real cd key.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@rageguy: Actually the whines of the masses fall on deaf ears at Microsoft. I guess swimming through a golden pool of coins in a Scrooge McDuck-sized vault is noisy, hard to hear anything but your infinite piles of money.
- rincebrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2rolfeman02:
How would that help, at all, with WGA? That's not a reinstall, that's just a reimaging, and if the version of XP in the restore is thought to be "not Genuine", a reimage wouldn't help that. - cybertragic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the suggestions caligari & makurosu. Hopefully one of these works
- bwilstyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For Dell computers, go and get you an OEM WinXP CD ISO from torrentspy. Works freakin awesome everytime. No activation required!
- callit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@mrFreeze
That's why they give you a phone number to call. If you bought a laptop with a legit copy from a major manufacturer, it has a license sticker on the bottom. If you reinstall, it will not validate - This is another anti-piracy "feature" - the code on that sticker can only be validated by phone. Too many people were stealing license codes from PCs they didn't own. - EEBaum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OR, you could pay for your copy of windows AND say "no thanks" when it asks to install WGA. Double bonus!
- j0c1f3r, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4ur an idiot....I'll pay for it when they fix it.....you want people to pay over $130 for a flawed POS that we HAVE to use........ya right.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Dude, Digg is home of the cheap. Diggers will spring $250 for a Wii, $200 for a DS or PSP but god forbid they buy software to run their computers on.
I guess mom and dad have a limit on their credit cards. Nong! Minus time. -
