- jmechy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+79you realize that fiji is the codename? Codenames change when the product gets closer to launch, just like windows vista used to be longhorn, and revolution is now Wii.
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -11/+56I thought there next OS was codenamed Blackcomb/Vienna...
- Tyrax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Yes, because as we all know its the developers who stop coding think up the code names. How the heck did you get modded up?
- splammo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@Chakz
read the article, it says Blackcomb/Vienna are the version after Fiji. And that some people view Fiji as Vista R2. - Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20"Just when you thought windows Vista would be the last and final blow from Microsoft"
Does anybody really think that? - Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -20/+34shindig111: "Whats in a name? What matters is what it delivers... I am really hoping that M$ comes out with really good OS to compete with Mac."
Microsoft doesn't have to compete with OSX (which you mistakenly called "Mac", Mac = Hardware).
At 80.7% market share (compared to OSX's 4.87%) it's OSX that has to try to compete, not the other way around.
I will grant that Linux/OSX has chipped away a bit at the mid-90% share that MS used to enjoy.
But honestly at less than 5% chances are Apple is more of a necessary evil (due to anti-monopoly laws) than any sort of real competitor.
[Above stats from March '06 : http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=2 ] - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@Dog_Paddle
The problem is that the tech industry really hasn't existed long enough to make generalisations like that, and has never before seen a company the size of Microsoft. Sure - Sega (consoles) Sony (walkmen) etc have failed, but at their peak they were only a fraction of Microsoft's size. I think people sometimes underestimate just how dominant and huge Microsoft is. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15This is hardly just MS - how many companies will promise a product 5 years in advance and then deliver it on time with a full feature set?
- combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Every OS is buggy.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Cronus6
That says 81% of all OS are Windows XP with other versions of Windows still in action.
MS has more than 92% market share according to that chart. Since it includes all of Window's versions, and even Windows 98 etc. are coded by MS teams
In fact. it says Linux is 0.32%
and .32% would do next to nothing to "chip away a bit" - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Yes but because a significant proportion of Digg users use OS X, Microsoft is doomed to fail sometime in the next couple of years. All those other users and buisnesses - they're just padding.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Was wondering the same thing. A product gets delayed a few months and all of a sudden it's that last and final blow.
- recover82, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10why would we think that vista was "the last and final blow"? the description makes little to no sense. microsoft isn't going away from the OS market anytime soon.
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8OK, place your bets on when this sucker is getting released! I'm putting $5 on late 2012 :)
- dioscaido, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Did you notice their quarterly earnings report? MS grew their profits by 13%. Their stock may be going down, but as a company they keep growing their profits. At a pretty impressive rate, actually, given the fact that they bring in 40 billion a year in revenue. I would start a deathknell when they report that their earnings have shrunk. Till then, the company is healthy.

- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Windows Puu.
- Darrelc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I hate how people complain when a product is late, and then complain when they release it and there is some security problems
"Oh no, vista is delayed again, this is the end for MS!"
"They should have released vista later and fixed the holes!" - en3r0, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Who cares?
- lukeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm a little confused. I still think that Vienna/Blackcomb is the next proper release of Windows. Fiji is also named Vista R2, so I would think of it as more of a SP2 kinda release.
Also, I dont see how delaying a release of a product makes some people think that microsoft is about the go bust... I expect that 90% of their releases have been delayed and that didn't stop them becoming so damn uber. Also, though I dont have figures to back this up, I also expect that both the Mac OS's and about every flavour of linux has delays. Its part of was the software industry is. It doesn't mean a company is dieing, it means that they are doing some quality control rather than bashing out crappy products. - SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The only fanboy here is you. Next time you want to sound more mature, try using MS or Microsoft.
- pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree. Vista is not even out yet, why time arguing over something that won't be out until the next decade?
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wait, why does this matter when Vista has not been released yet?
If it's called Fiji, it's gonna get a name change as it comes closer to release date. - jivemasta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Mac does not equal hardware. It is MAC OS X. And you buy an APPLE computer, and iPod.
And Microsoft usually releases a server based operating system after a major OS release. Codenames are just a name for people to call it before marketing comes up with a better name. Imagine a world without codenames:
Dev1: Do you have the current code for the next operating system after vista?
Dev2: No I'm on the team working on the next next operating system after vista.
God, I am so tired of people saying "M$". If you want people to take you seriously, type out thier name. When I see it, I completly disregard what could be a valid point. Would you believe a doctor that gave you a pamphlet about aid$, and told you that you have it? - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I, for one, am looking forward to DirectX 10, SAPI 5.3 (Managed Speech API, finally....I have a for-fun voice control project in C#), the new networking stack, WinFX, and WPF, for the big ones that I can think of right now...
- the3living1end, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6We had a Microsoft recruiter on our campus and he confirmed that the operating system after Vista is codenamed Blackcomb. The code names have come from the following:
Whistler (XP) - A mountain
Longhorn (Vista) - A bar
Blackcomb - Another mountain
with Longhorn as a restaurant between the two mountains its supposed to symbolize the transition. Blackcomb is supposed to completely redesign Windows in every way most importantly, the User Interface - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Who thought that Vista would be the last? why do people type dumb ***** like that?
- element, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I for one am excited about Vista. I tried the beta and was fairly impressed. Now I just need a faster computer (PIII still)
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10MS Employs 10s of 1000s of people. How much difference do you think a few people sitting in some dusty room for half an hour thinking up names is going to make?
- Darrelc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Id place money that p9s50W5k4GUD2c6 and gmerin are writing that from windows XP.
I think they have codenames as when someone talks about in the future, its easier to say "Windows Fiji" rather than "The next windows after the one after this" - nexus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Fiji is the codename for Vista R2 it is NOT the codename for the next windows OS, that is Vienna (formerly blackcomb) R2 has always been an addon not a new OS. Server 2003 R2 is not an entirely new os
http://bink.nu/Article6755.bink
Reported as inaccurate (because the title is missleading) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wait I thought the new windows was codenamed Venice?
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4no, it looks like they changed it.
Really though who cares? This is what, 4-7 years away at least? More then likely they have just finalized what they wanted in Vista (or could put in it) and are now drawing up plans for what they will have in their next OS, nothing more. - aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3XP was a huge improvement over the ME/98 series. If nothing else, they moved away from Dos, which alone made it much much more stable. Honestly, when was the last time your XP computer BSODed or crashed to the point where you had to reboot. Unless you're computer's riddled with viruses and spyware, it doesn't happen that often. Compare that to ME, where after anything as simple as a progam crash the OS would stall to the point where it needed rebooting.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5no, it was actually codenamed blackcomb.
- codyg1985, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Good article...as long as MS delivers on the promises that it makes, unlike Vista, then maybe Fiji or Vienna will be more of a groundbreaking release.
- scottpatricks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All this crap about OS X and Vista, and I really don't see the point. If you are a part of a corporation, you use Microsoft. If you are a home user, you use either. The management tools with Microsoft multi-level domain support are amazing. OS X isn't even in the same ballpark as this. Hell, from a sys-admin point of view, it isn't even the same sport. OS X sucks on a corporation point of view. From a home user, it is pretty kick ass. If your a sys-admin trying to manage 1000+ computers, Group Policy is a pretty nice tool. What does OS X have for server/client management?
- Flooq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This was announced before the Wii announcement.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah I mean Apple isn't really showing us tatthey would be any more benevolent than MS right now are they? The Ipod embodies everything people hate about MS: it's proprietary, it gives you less for your money than competing products, and to add to the frustration everyone uses it and swears by it because they don't know any better.
I don't know how people get these notions that things would be better under apple. Sure they get out the software faster than MS, but if your judging things by who would be more consumer friendly I'll take the OS you can run on anything including a mac over the one you have to buy from Apple or not at all. - jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9let's hope not. If the majority become OSX users the virus / spyware creators will finally start killing the superior MAC OSX. The only reason we are safe now is that no-one in their right mind would spend 3 times the resources and effort in making viruses that could only effect 5% of PCs.
So if anyone asks if a mac is a good buy, put them in-front of OS-9 untill they run screaming from the room. - goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey at least alot of these comments are actually intelligent and not going to the same old Mac vs Ms *****.. Good job. I only had a glance at some of these comments, hopefully no one acts like a moron and turns it into a debate. Any new software is good. I digg!
- L0phtpDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No you're right. In TFA: "Windows "Fiji" (also referred to by some Microsoft watchers as Vista R2)" and then they mention Venice...
So I read this as: "Fiji" is the Windows ME of Vista, while Venice is the XP of Vista. (Considering you're looking at Vista as Windows 98). - SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And if you think rumours getting to the front page are an indication of "fanboys", I just remembered about a story getting to the front page about the stairs in Apple stores. So if you think this is an indication of fanboyism...
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't forget to throw in the Al Queda in on the Weekend In Bagdad mix with Windows.
- thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Fiji is a paradise. Windows is a weekend in Baghdad.
what MS is trying to say is that they are dumping windows in exchange for the superior mac os. they are going to focus entirely on game consoles and office suites. - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I thought vista was the ME of XP. Were getting an ME of an ME now?
- mikm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It probably will contain WinFS, as Microsoft decided to release it as an update.
- robohoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They said Vista was supposed to be the next best thing. Now it's just a redesigned GUI for XP...:|
Why can't they just add the features they plan for Blackcomb in Vista, and finally release the goddamn thing instead of making all these pointless transitions? - xinul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Just when you thought windows Vista would be the last and final blow from Microsoft.."
This and other ridiculous statements at 10! Please even as a mac user I recognize ms is no were near finished. - Leo55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what?
i really hope vista is not going to be like Win ME...
i think fiji is really going to be how vista is suspose to look like. -
