- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -10/+38I think I can hear the march of approaching iTunes fanboys.
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Well, I do...so that's atleast a person. Just need one more for "people." Who's it gonna be?
- silkysaul, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Yep like me! I like winamp because it loads up fast, its simple and NOT BLOATED *cough cough -- iTunes!*
I hate the fact that iTunes NEEDS a process running in the background. I have my pretty task manager displaying 13 processes and don't wish to run one that's unnecessary =) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Try clicking something other than "visualizations" in the Plug-in section on the WinAmp site and you'll find that is not the case.
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19ccanni1028, knock yourself out.
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=winamp - londoneconomist, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Winamp 2.7: Clean and simple, can't be beat!
- dark_helmet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16its an ipod plugin, and as of version 5.2 it comes as part of winamp.
- rizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Don't forget, it's not only the itunes fanboys approaching, but all those that claim winamp sucked after 2.x.
Many people moved away from Winamp with the debacle that was Winamp 3, and only a few of those people have looked at Winamp 5. There's a reason they skipped version 4, it's because they admit that v3 sucked so much they needed to "skip a version!"
Try out Winamp5. DON'T install eMusic plugin or winamp agent (keep the library though), or any of the "3rd party" crap.
Personally, I like that Winamp's library treats your music like Picasa treats your pictures. It doesn't modify them nor does it need to be in its "special" own library. Just give it the folder(s) where you music is, and you're good to go. - wattssw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I have been using winamp since the days when you had to uncook the mp3's you downloaded off Fortune City. It has never failed me nor become bloated, and I love the classic interface I have been using for years. Music Match, Itunes and the rest are simply too much software with too little capability; imho, it really whips the llama's ass
- thirdplanet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I use WinAmp. 1/2 the RAM usage, 2x the usefulness. That makes it people!
Hey, I'm using it now! - jay314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@lord2800:
What the hell version of winamp are you using that eats up 200 megs of RAM? I've never seen mine grow above 25.. and that's only because I have it set to buffer entire mp3s to memory. I'm watching a divx .avi in winamp right now (yes, the default install does video) and it's using 15 megs including plugins.
So, in conclusion: stop lying.
P.S. FooBar2000 is the stupidest name since eDonkey2000. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11londoneconomist you should checkout 5, it takes the new stuff from 3 minus the crappiness and mixes it with the 2 series UI engine. It has "Modern" skins and "Classic" skins, classic being ones from Winamp2. It truly is the best of both worlds :D
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10ya foobar is great after 200 hrs of customizing and learning what the hell it does. Why they don't do an out of the box ready to go nicely skinned version is beyond me.. and yes i know they have a version with a bunch of plugins...
face it us non giddy for programming kids don't want to sit and config a media player for hours. But I do like the as simple or complex as you want it to be approach they took. Its good software, its just not for me. - Dayz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10When did Winamp die? I also liked it and I still use it. I dont find what the problem is?
- londoneconomist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@ccanni1028: You can get it from oldversion.com. I believe 2.70 was the last version before the AOL/TW buyout of Nullsoft.
- DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Haha, the first MP3 I ever downloaded had to have been converted from a MIDI. (Alice In Chains I think) I was like, what the hell is so great about this?
- mDonaldson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I really think Winamp should serve as a model for software projects to come. There is little more annoying than realizing a program is not able to be modified to make it useful. If I recall correctly, some of the more important and useful mods were free.
- donatj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Winamps Media Librarys autotracking beats ITunes "I want complete control of your music" approach hands down.
- Krush, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14I actually switch to Foobar because Winamp started to get a little bloated in my opinion. The older versions are still pretty good though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If ever there was a crappy peace of software, XMPlayer is it.
- bombtrack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I used to use Winamp. I always thought iTunes was a terribly written piece of software. Perhaps it's written better for the Mac because I know for a fact it's terrible for the Windows platform.
Right now I use foobar2000. It'd be nice if it had a better UI and more simplicity in it's customization and options selection but it's pretty fast and for me it does basic things quite well. - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8One word. VLC.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Nope it's not dead. They gave up on 3 and went to the much improved 5. Winamp 5 is pretty slick.
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Winamp has an iTunes plugin now.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I wish Nullsoft still existed. Winamp is now 100% an AOL property.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I use winamp because iTunes MP3 encoder is crappy
http://www.rjamorim.com/test/mp3-128/results.html
In Winamp I can encode using LAME wich iTunes or Windows Media player Can't. Since MP3 is the standard (search for MP3 in digg) i am using the software wich gives me the best quality in my MP3's, that's all i can say. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow this brings back some memories. I can still vividly remember downloading my first MP3 and cranking up WinPlay.exe, expecting some cheesey mod/midi thing and to my amazement it sounded CD quality. I proceeded to download every mp3 I could find -- even if I didn't like the music. I think I switched to Winamp around version .6 or so.
- norz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If you want more out of your audio player and have some time to learn, try foobar2000, it's the most powerful player on windows, uses few MB of memory, and can manage a big music collection.

- Unicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually there's been an iPod plugin for a while and it is now actually integrated in to Winamp! Works great for me, such a relief too cus I could never get used to iTunes.
- addakorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5could you provide links?
- inmatarian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Fun tip, It took me some experimenting to figure out. Just a quick little definition, Decibels are a log scale, so when I say -3db, I mean a half, and -6db, I mean a quarter.
Linear Volume: Piped through a log function. 50% is -3db. 25% is -6db. Usually the default, but everything above 50% seems to be too loud.
Log Volume: Direct mapping. With 0% mapping to -100db, every percentage is a decibel. 97% would be -3db. Half volume really fast. If you change the mapping, a good setting is 0% to -30db, so that 90% is -3db.
Hybrid Volume: Digital division. 70% is -3db, 50% is -6db. I haven't seen the source code, but I can imagine that this one just does a (sample * volume / 100). - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I use Winamp with a TV plugin that enables Winamp to display my Replay TVs s-video output to the video cards s-video input. After trying every known tv-tuner software this is the only one that has low cpu, no stuttering, and isn't bloated beyond belief.
- javiel, on 07/08/2008, -2/+6http://www.zombo.com/ Has everything you need. You can do anything at zombo com
- appidydafoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is a pretty lame article...
They don't even mention the best plugins for Winamp, just go look at their site, sort by number of downloads and hit the top five. If you have a large music library, get Dynamic Library and be amazed at never having to create crappy playlists again! Winamp FTW! Enhancer, Standard CrossFader, Dynamic Library, AudioScrobbler and MilkDrop are all you need for a full experience. - computerdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where are the tweaks?! These aren't tweaks for Winamp, they're configurations for 2 plug-ins. The article author should spend more time on the title next time to reflect what the article actually is about!
- elpottsy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And right at the back come the VLC fanboys!!!!
clean and easy with no *****, thats how i serve my lost, family guy, and mp3 - jamelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looks like Winamp will be recieving a lot of downloads today.
- Geeshboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've always been a fan of Winamp. It's a solid player with great sound. The problem is that Winamp's ability to manage a large music database is limited. And we're forced into using iTunes if we have iPods.
- ZekeSulastin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like Winamp because the MMD3 skin works quite well, the music library works incredibly well and will sync with my Zen Xtra (BIG BIG MAJOR point for me), and has a LOT of esoteric plugins available. Most people don't need a method to play emulated sound dumps from Genesis or SNES emulators - but there are Winamp plugins available for those files, that allow me to easily make WAVs of them using Diskwriter (then I use a different encoder to go to MP3).
I don't find it horribly bloated at all, and it rarely goes above 30 MB of RAM ... - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ahhhhh... to watch tv and skip through all of the commercials on my big flat panel monitor. All using Winamp a plugin and a remote. Big high back musty chair, feet propped up. Why do you ask?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I prefer VLC. It plays EVERYTHING plus allows for some REALLY cool streaming options across a network. Very clean, simple interface too. Plus it runs on just about every platform you can imagine.
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like winamp. Its shoutcast TV is great for watching MST3K reruns and porn.
- mamluk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like winamp's way of managing a music library, and I am a fan of winamp in general. But you can also set iTunes to do the same thing, however it is not enabled as a default.
- Fratm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I use XMMS, which looks a lot like winamp.
- rizzle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Nullsoft is one of the *FEW* companies that admitted when they made a mistake (winamp3). Give them another chance, and try out Winamp 5 for yourself. I can assure you it takes less memory in your system than iTunes!
- TransmitThis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2still use winamp myself as well.
Like the way I can have a few extras and change how it looks

thats an old image so dont flame :)
but it is nice to just see your albums and click on them to play - Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's a link to download the full free version of Winamp _without_ the crap like emusic and whatever else normally comes with it these days. Just Winamp, nothing more.
http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/client/winamp522_full.exe - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the customization of foobar2k is just simple scripting =p
- billyvnilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I enjoyed the article. But he doesn't even begin to cut into winamp. The tweaks lie in the plugins and skins. Such as the packaged Jump To File Extra. Hopefully his next installment will include the more noteworthy plugins(jtfe, dynamic library, activewinamp) and skins from the winamp.com site and its forums.
