Good maths here... - inactive, on 05/27/2009, -4/+64Most probably if someone can come up with plugins like firefox.. I'd switch
- SixChamber, on 05/27/2009, -3/+54I've used both FF and GC heavily and have decided to stick to Chrome. While most Diggers run with the plug-in argument, Chrome is simply faster and less bloated than FF.
- jdmulloy, on 05/27/2009, -2/+45I could use it more if there was a Linux version.
- Nephersir7, on 05/28/2009, -3/+37Why would you chose to use Safari over Chrome? I can't think of any reason....
Seriously. - everglade, on 05/28/2009, -0/+32That's what's keeping me from switching, too. To any browser, really. I'd love to have a browser that doesn't leak memory like firefox does, but I love my plugins too much.
- ek3s, on 05/28/2009, -1/+33Adblock. I want it.
- Doktag, on 05/28/2009, -0/+32a VERY serious of TV ads.
- moothemagiccow, on 05/28/2009, -3/+23If you're behind 4 browsers, you're number FIVE. Pretty sad it's behind opera
- Nephersir7, on 05/27/2009, -2/+22Linux version? Here you go (still quite buggy): http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/snapshots/chrom ...
Mac? Right here.... http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/snapshots/sub-r ...
Extensions? They unveiled this minutes ago: http://dev.chromium.org/developers/design-document ... - CaptainPanda, on 05/28/2009, -0/+19With Chrome, I actually haven't missed having plug-ins (with the exception of Ad-Block Plus).
- fcrow, on 05/27/2009, -13/+28GOOGLE CHROME!!! Man I already had forgotten it even existed!
- tmalloy, on 05/28/2009, -0/+14That is a horribly written article.
- bunk3rk1ng, on 05/28/2009, -0/+12I'm using Chrome right now :)
The only thing I can't figure out is how to use RSS feeds in your bookmarks toolbar like you can in firefox :/ - one1plus1one, on 05/28/2009, -0/+11Laugh if you will -- I used to post comments on Digg making fun of Google Chrome.
But I started using Chrome a few months ago and I love it for 2 reasons:
1) It seems zippy, quick, simple, and un-demanding in terms of resources.
2) When I am surfing websites that feature... shall we say "ladies of the night"... I no longer get trojans or viruses.
I used to get tons of trojans and viruses by surfing those sites -- most likely courtesy of the folks over in Russia and China.
I would have to run malware bites, and do some fancy registry-editing to repair my system. Sometimes the damage was so bad, that I would have to reclone and restore my operating system at least once or twice a month --- which was a real b*tch if it happened on my work computer, because then I would have to explain to my boss that I was visiting: Hot-Lesbian-Babes-of-Brazil-Gone-Wild again.
Now for the past 3 months I've been using Chrome on both my work and home computer -- and nothing: No more viruses. No more malware. No more worries.
(Not sure how long that will last before malware writers figure out how to get through Chrome's barrier, and begin actively targeting it.) - lorddazzer, on 05/28/2009, -2/+12I think this could be an absolutely brilliant move.
Most people who still use IE don't use firefox because they don't know about firefox. Firefox doesn't do any conventional advertising.
Google can use its brand name which is synonymous with the Web, promote their Web browser to people who didn't know better and perhaps might succeed in grabbing a few converts. - DeathRay2K, on 05/28/2009, -1/+10Chrome is actually ahead of Opera, I guess they just got confused. Actually, the whole article seemed very confused, and it seemed like it was written by someone with little grasp of the English language, and even less understanding of browsers...
- nkovacs, on 05/28/2009, -1/+10Chrome doesn't run on Mac OS X or on an iPhone. That's why.
- evil-doer, on 05/28/2009, -7/+16miliseconds faster at rendering certain pages is one single feature, one thats at the bottom of my list of why firefox is superior. would i like firefox faster? sure, why the hell not? but its not a major feature or problem, we are talking fractions of a second here.. plugins outshine this almost unnoticeable speed difference.
- rusty123jimi, on 05/28/2009, -1/+10I like Google Chrome, it really is a decent web browser.
- jjamminjon, on 05/28/2009, -0/+8Must chew Apple?
- viceversarohan, on 05/28/2009, -1/+9Chrome is good. I switched from Firefox a couple of months ago and I really love its bare essentials approach. People need to give it a chance. It is seriously light weight and fast...it loads up in a second and I have really gotten used to the start page that previews my most viewed sites. I also love the search in the address bar feature. Give it another go people!
- inactive, on 05/28/2009, -1/+9I for one like chrome and use it all the time, it's fast never crashes and don't load up the screen with worthless junk.
- holyskeleton, on 05/28/2009, -2/+10I couldn't care less if other people don't use Chrome as long as I can use it. It's the fastest browser hands down and you don't miss out on those snorg tee girls or busted tee girls.
- dsheinem, on 05/28/2009, -1/+8I hate titles like this.
Will Explorer chart new territory? Will the new Firefox be hot? Will Opera hit the right notes?
Will we ever see more creative tech news writers? - bloodwings, on 05/28/2009, -2/+9adsweep.org
- c010rb1indusa, on 05/28/2009, -1/+7Can't wait for the Mac release, I really hope it's faster than safari.
- PTJustinBowers, on 05/28/2009, -1/+7I'm going to start burying front page news that has misspellings, punctuation errors, and incorrect word usage. We're smarter than this, guys.
- krisrm, on 05/28/2009, -2/+7We're gonna need a cleanup in aisle 9...
- topcat5, on 05/28/2009, -2/+7Sounds like a solution looking for a problem. Firefox + addons is great. Plus Google already knows too much about everything, so I don't trust this browser.
- TimDigg, on 05/28/2009, -2/+7Chrome is just too fast...even though it doesn't have extensions like FF.....Chrome is just too fast though
- foilking, on 05/28/2009, -2/+7Extension/Plugin capabilities are currently in development. Just saw a tech demo of it and its going to be amazing.
- memper, on 05/28/2009, -2/+6That same attitude is why people choose to stay with IE.
It just makes you look old and slow. At least install it and know it so that the next gen browser isn't another teeth pulling exercise. - dagamer34, on 05/28/2009, -1/+5Honestly, I just block ads out mentally now. And some of them I actually enjoy looking at.
I could see if you were on a limited speed connection where blocking out ads could reduce loading time, but the average digg user has a 6Mbit/s line, I really doubt blocking ads matters that much, and certainly, not to the point of using Firefox over Chrome because of that point alone.
And extensions bloat a web browser so much, it's not even funny. - cjurdane, on 05/28/2009, -1/+5Ive been using chrome for a while and I like it a lot. I always wanted to make the switch from IE but for some reason I never liked firefox that much (it seemed slow and crowded of tabs and things) so Google chrome was just fine for me, it has this light view that I like. Plus the home page allows for quick access to the most viewed pages, great tool.
- TheBlueVulcan, on 05/28/2009, -3/+6Agreed. I have a Mac and, although I like some features of Safari, I seriously have considered booting into XP mode just to use Chrome instead.
- bizchris, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3Oh daddy.
- emanpa68, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3It's hard to change... whenever my clients get confused loading a plugin they freak out.
So many of them have downgraded to IE 6 after I update their machines. Drives me NUTSSS. - TheSeeker11, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3No support for RSS feeds yet. There's always Google Reader...
- MAGZine, on 05/28/2009, -1/+4Even in general page loading, I still find Chrome faster than FireFox.
And getting to the page I want is at the top of my priority list. - tas08, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3Sorry, I'm kind of hijacking your comment for this... Since there seems to be no shortage of people pointing out where GC lacks, I'd like to point out some features I'm falling in love with in hopes that this list will be useful to someone. Most of these features no one told me about.
In my experience, GC starts up as much as 4x faster than FF, and is noticeably faster opening new tabs/windows (even web pages usually load enough faster to be perceptible to humans like me). Once browsing, I often have problems w/ FF causing any type of video to lag for fractions of a second while it's playing, and this is very irritating. The dual purpose search/url bar is great and very effective - one feature that not many people know about is that if you begin to type in a website like YouTube, once you have it partially entered, you can hit TAB and then type in a search term and it will automatically search that website for you, directing you immediately to the results page - a major time saver I have found (ex. type in "yout" (GC figures out the rest) then push TAB and type "keyboard cat" to automatically search YT for keyboard cat vids).
The crashes are slightly less frequent, and isolated to individual tabs. To me, its sleek design is hugely important, I've even found a GC skin for FF to help make FF seem less bloated to me. GC doesn't leak memory (or at least as much as FF), installing Privoxy will take care of the lack of AdBlock. The drag & drop utilities in GC function much more smoothly and elegantly than in FF, allowing me to easily merge tabs from different windows into one, or separate them out. The neat thing is, any dragging action isn't denoted by arrows, but but smaller, translucent, images of what you're dragging - be it rearranging tabs, or dragging them out into their own/different windows.
The home page on GC I find very handy, displaying my most commonly visited pages right in front of me (and yes, you can delete any... distasteful... ones from the list). Incognito mode functions seamlessly while still allowing regular windows to be open simultaneously. The URL/search bar's auto-complete functionality is better. For example, I have merely to type in the letter 'e' and push enter to be taken to explosm.net; 'q'+enter takes me to questionablecontent.net;'x'+enter to xkcd.com.
One problem I've had that I will mention because I haven't seen it come up - I have problems logging into accounts on some websites. Logging in sometimes just takes me back to the home page w/o having logged me in. Sometimes this is remedied by unchecking the 'remember me' box, but for some reason I cannot log into my DeviantArt account through GC.
Hope this is useful to someone. - mustard333, on 05/28/2009, -18/+21I doubt I'll use it. I find Safari and Firefox adequate.
- decavolt, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3Yes. In the marketing industry the official term is "turd polishing", and it's just as horrible as it sounds.
- telepwn, on 05/28/2009, -2/+5it also has a quicker startup time and uses less CPU and RAM than FF by a pretty wide margin in my experience
- virtualmode, on 05/27/2009, -6/+9A strange article where ALL major browsers are mentioned and reviewed except Firefox. The article even says that "Chrome is is actively pursuing IE lead". I love both Chrome and Firefox but the author probably lives in another dimension. Buried.
- DJJensaarai, on 05/28/2009, -2/+5Dugg for Chrome, but not a very good article.
I switched to Chrome from Firefox awhile back, and haven't really looked back. I didn't use very many plugins to begin with, and when I do want to use one, say to download a YouTube movie, I can just fire up Firefox real quick and do it.
I'm using Chrome 3.0.182.2 (newest update changed from 2 to 3...I think that was a mistake), their newest beta version, so I have form autofill and all the performance enhancements they've put in...gotta say, I'm quite happy with it. - aaabbbsss, on 05/28/2009, -2/+5WTF is a serious of TV ads?
- decavolt, on 05/28/2009, -5/+8Windows only = fail.
Sure, they've been saying other OS versions are "coming", but then release Chrome 2.0 and it's still Windows only. Google - especially Google - should understand platform ambiguity. On its current course, Chrome is just shaping up to be another IE: a browser developers and designers will f'ing hate because it's locked into Windows. And before anyone mentions Chromium (the hacked up Chrome for Mac), it's a piece of junk. - tensionhead, on 05/28/2009, -1/+4adsweep does not work for me.
It still displays ads on some of my most visited sites, and when it does remove them they still show up for a second before being blocked. So they load and then disappear, which is annoying. - tehknotte, on 05/28/2009, -0/+3dugg for ladies of the night
