Wikimapia Invades Google Earth!

wikimapia.mattjonesblog.com — Wikimapia have created a Google Earth layer for their ever increasing Wikipedia-style database.

  • Prelude76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That is so sweet. I didn't like Wikimapia's browser-based interface, preferring the full 3D navigation of Google Earth vs Google Maps, so it's nice to see we can have wikimapia info directly inside Google Earth.

    p.s. Casio watches don't make good servers. ;)
  • Nerdnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, this is way nice. I like the full screen approach. The maps seem more clear and you're able to zoom in closer. It does seem a bit slower loading, though. Other than that I like it a lot!

    • PhilH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It did show some suggested dupes, but none were relating to the recent addition of a google earth layer. This is not about wikimapia as a service after all, but its brand new integration into google earth. As far as I am aware, I was the first to submit this.

    • NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I believe that is someone used it in a sentence. And you understood it. That's correct English. Also goes for making up words. If you make up some word and the people you are talking to understand it you have just created a new word.

    • Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I disagree NinjaBoy. Since "have" is already a word, using it in an incorrect manner does not make it a new word. It just means the user doesn't know how to speak proper English.

      I've done some quick research and discovered that this phenomenon is a BRITISH slag format. It IS incorrect, but has become accepted as meaning that the people of the referenced company have done something. C'mon Brits... this is YOUR language, we as Americans have done enough to butcher the language, please don't help us out.

Just because one is not explicitly stating that they are refering to the group rather than the company does not make it incorrect english. Much language relies on implicity, otherwise it would take a very long time to say very little. The usage of 'have' as the third-person plural clearly shows that I am refering to the group, which are also known by the collective name of 'Wikimapia'. The sentence is therefore valid and correct.

      I also agree about the butchering of the english language, it's a shame.

      Yes, we understood what you meant, but we can also get the gist of most phrases in Ebonics... that doesn't make them proper English either.

      Simplicity is nice, but I could also shorten everything I write and start using gr8 wrds from the Internet 4 the same reason. If it were in the title, I would agree. Titles need to be short or you end up with "To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything Julie Numar" and similar crap.

      Also, understand that I'm not trying to start a grammar flame-war, I simply find the phenomenon curious. I've heard it more and more recently and I would wondering on where it was coming from.
