Why YouTube should fear Hulu
money.cnn.com — Watch out Google. Two old-media dinosaurs, Fox and NBC Universal, have created one cool venue for their hottest shows.

- danielpyle, on 03/08/2008, -5/+16Ok how can we milk advertisers while supplying the mindless with internet entertainment???? Oh I know now....I just read the article...
- affanjam, on 03/08/2008, -1/+16youtube has nothing to fear about...hulu doesn't work anywhere else except america....damn "not available in your region" errors
- widgetmaker, on 03/08/2008, -4/+1So do half the youtube music videos now though.
- Moskie, on 03/08/2008, -1/+12Are you implying that the content of Hulu is for the "mindless" while the content of YouTube is not?
- sgtpppr, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3The two lamest, most sensational articles on the home page are both from CNN...interesting. We have one saying YouTube should fear Hulu and one that says Chinese hackers are going to take down the Pentagon. Buried as inaccurate.
- DiggzDE, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1I have been a beta member on hulu since it first started. I've loved every bit of it. I am not going to bash a service that honestly makes my boring hours at work entertaining. haha
- sanman, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1pheer ctHULU
- affanjam, on 03/08/2008, -1/+16youtube has nothing to fear about...hulu doesn't work anywhere else except america....damn "not available in your region" errors
- theantirobot, on 03/08/2008, -1/+188Who goes to youtube to watch tv shows?
- Alegoo92, on 03/08/2008, -6/+16Well though it's a different intended source I still find myself on Hulu now at times I might've spent on other sites. And since watching one episode takes at least 20 minutes, that's a lot of traffic time being spent on one site.
- SemiSarcastic, on 03/08/2008, -2/+13You sir will incur the wrath of every non-conformist on digg for making that comment.
- ligyron, on 03/08/2008, -0/+12Right. I don't see how it is competition for Google. It's called *You*Tube after all. It's a social site where people can upload their own videos. Copyrighted material that gets uploaded is typically removed anyway. This is just a site for Fox/NBC to upload their shows
The article is just using buzzwords to get more hits - ohgr, on 03/08/2008, -1/+6Well remember about 3 years ago when Youtube was the new face on the internet? The first thing that drew me to the site wasn't all the user-created videos. Nope, it was the fact that at one time I could view all the Family Guy episodes I wanted, at my own leisure, without commercials.
Those days are over. - daschupa, on 03/08/2008, -1/+3Yup, now you can watch all 3 family guy episodes with the same f-ing commercial replaying every 5 minutes. How times change.
- Roger, on 03/08/2008, -2/+1I thought Youtube would die when they started removing all the full episodes.
- searcade, on 03/09/2008, -1/+1The best is http://www.meelu.com for movies
- delgotit99, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Yeah really, I bet google is shaking in their pants. HA
- Alegoo92, on 03/08/2008, -6/+16Well though it's a different intended source I still find myself on Hulu now at times I might've spent on other sites. And since watching one episode takes at least 20 minutes, that's a lot of traffic time being spent on one site.
- FishHammer, on 03/08/2008, -19/+13Sponsored by Hulu.com
- Akraz, on 03/08/2008, -26/+10I refuse to watch FOX anything, so I don't "fear" Hulu, and neither should YouTube.
- Alegoo92, on 03/08/2008, -3/+28Because you're all that matters.
- VibhuC812, on 03/08/2008, -2/+20Akraz is in fact Hulu's targeted demographic. All internet venues depend on his say-so.
- tkotam, on 03/08/2008, -2/+2Hi everyone,
Youtube = accessible to the whole wide world, except Pakistan :-)
Hulu = only accessible to the United States of A (that's where Mr. Bush comes from, got it?)
There is no way in hell that all these media dinosaurs will open Hulu up to the world. Have you ever wondered how many people from the REST OF THE WORLD access Youtube videos on a daily basis..?
If hulu opens up to the world, then it will get somewhere.- fkr3, on 03/08/2008, -1/+3YouTube = content delivery system
Hulu = content delivery system by the people making most of the content the masses want to see
I'd say YouTube should be at least a little bit worried.
- fkr3, on 03/08/2008, -1/+3YouTube = content delivery system
- tkotam, on 03/08/2008, -2/+2Hi everyone,
- Akraz, on 03/08/2008, -4/+5-_- i didnt mean it like that. My context was wrong, sorry.
- Iwantawii, on 03/08/2008, -0/+2I fear Hulu. Big time.
- MWeather, on 03/08/2008, -2/+3You're missing out. Futurama and Family Guy are hilarious.
- positron, on 03/08/2008, -1/+2Every ad served to hulu users is money in the bank for News Corp and Rupert Murdoch. Just keep it in mind.
- JudgeMonkey, on 03/08/2008, -1/+3As long as they give me what I want, fine. It isn't costing me a cent, and that is the important part. if they stop having things that interest me, then I leave. Pretty simple.
- fkr3, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1God forbid your precious little eyes should have to see an ad in exchange for watching tv shows you want to watch.
Get over yourself.
- metalkills, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1he probably just doesn't watch FOX NEWS to make some sort of statement... Im sure he watches everything else so he can keep up with the new "hilarious" rehashed Stewie line his friends are wearing out.
- Akraz, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Yes, thank you. But To be honest, all i watch on FOX is House and The Simpsons... and not even so much the simpsons anymore.. and we have those shows on a different station here in Canada in addition to FOX29
- mrtdot, on 03/08/2008, -14/+9Hulu isn't hat good, it only shows the most recent season of a show. It should show all the episodes, then it could compete.
- tacojohn, on 03/08/2008, -3/+22They have every episode of Arrested Development (my new favorite show BTW) from all 3 seasons. Not to mention the entire collection of Firefly and many others. Hulu is pretty good for a "corporate" site...
- LifeIsARhythm, on 03/08/2008, -0/+5actually they don't they have season 1 and the first 5 episodes of 2 and 3.
- RobotChicken1, on 03/08/2008, -0/+5To be fair, they're both cancelled shows.
- wbeavis, on 03/08/2008, -3/+8So you expect them to magically dump the entire world's library of video content on the sight with a snap of the fingers? In reality, what people want to watch most is the current stuff. Had you actually been using Hulu, you'd notice that every day new content is added. I personally liek Hulu. I'm not saying it is the best, but it is the direction things are going. Give it time to develop and add content and aquire rights for other networks. Considering it is still in beta, I think, and has only been out a short time, I think they are doing a hell of a job.
But, to speak on the post title, youtube and hulu are aimed at different targets. Hulu does not want user supplied content and youtube does not want tv shows and movies.
/The need more movies and childrens content.- MWeather, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3"So you expect them to magically dump the entire world's library of video content on the sight with a snap of the fingers?"
Yes. The torrents are widely available. Give me a nice gigabit connection and I'll fill that site up in a week.
- MWeather, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3"So you expect them to magically dump the entire world's library of video content on the sight with a snap of the fingers?"
- gotamd, on 03/08/2008, -1/+1They're trying not to kill revenue from DVD sales. They have enough shows that if you're keeping up to within at least a few weeks of what's currently out you're covered. For the price, it's quite good.
- tacojohn, on 03/08/2008, -3/+22They have every episode of Arrested Development (my new favorite show BTW) from all 3 seasons. Not to mention the entire collection of Firefly and many others. Hulu is pretty good for a "corporate" site...
- judicar, on 03/08/2008, -18/+13Or just watch it on T.V ...
- SemiSarcastic, on 03/08/2008, -1/+11Television is internet society's new whipping child. Didn't you get the memo?
- iceman0113, on 03/08/2008, -1/+6Let's see, no commercials (except for the beginning of the show), I can pause and play whenever I want, it's free, if I close the window and return to the show, it picks up where I left off. Nah, I think I'll stick with hulu.
- MWeather, on 03/08/2008, -1/+2I do watch Hulu on my TV.
- NathanCH, on 03/08/2008, -11/+13It could have the greatest features anywhere but people wont care because it's not Youtube. There is a huge community on youtube that most people don't even know about. The fact is, people wont migrate to a new site regardless of what's on it.
- skyh, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Why YouTube should NOT fear Hulu:
Hulu = Just TV Shows
YouTube = ANYTHING
They're assuming that because people are going to watch TV on Hulu, they aren't going to watch YouTube for some reason... which is completely false.- Atomic1fire, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1They need to Advertise Hulu more first aim for tv ads and social network ads with the popular shows
Increase the interactivity (interactive entertainment and community's to go with the content)
and aim for teens and the adults will slowly adapt to it
- Atomic1fire, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1They need to Advertise Hulu more first aim for tv ads and social network ads with the popular shows
- skyh, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Why YouTube should NOT fear Hulu:
- rampur, on 03/08/2008, -20/+9This is dumb, i go to youtube for the comunity not for some ***** quality shows(FOX and NBC)
- chall85, on 03/08/2008, -1/+57you go to youtube for "the community"? that is sad.
- kindrobot, on 03/08/2008, -0/+18No, he goes for the "comunity". If you're familiar with the average youtube comment, you'll realize he's really one of them.
- RobotChicken1, on 03/08/2008, -1/+3Actually there is somewhat of a community on youtube, if only between lesser known vloggers. Not the featured videos' "communites."
- Daniel591992, on 03/08/2008, -0/+13Oh God...
- johnnyb3, on 03/08/2008, -0/+6I go for the commentary.
- Alegoo92, on 03/08/2008, -2/+3FOX and NBC have like the best shows on TV. I get it: you don't like FOX news, but seriously? Law and Order, Simpsons, House, 24, Heroes, SNL, Family Guy, Sunny in Philadelphia????
- mrfreeziexp, on 03/08/2008, -0/+6Youtube's "comunity" is it's weakest aspect..
- Philbert, on 03/08/2008, -0/+2It's not just FOX and NBC you know. Bravo, MGM, SciFi, Sony, Sundance Channel. There's a few full movies on there as well like Steve Martin's The Jerk.
- chall85, on 03/08/2008, -1/+57you go to youtube for "the community"? that is sad.
- chrisaug18, on 03/08/2008, -1/+50Competition is good, it means we will get better services online.
- obviouscatt, on 03/08/2008, -9/+1Oh wow! Really? Thanks for the tip!
-Obvious Cat- PathDaemon, on 03/08/2008, -0/+5/me stuffs Obvious Cat into Very Large Mouth Cat.
- colto, on 03/08/2008, -0/+6"OM NOM NOM NOM NOM"
- PathDaemon, on 03/08/2008, -0/+5/me stuffs Obvious Cat into Very Large Mouth Cat.
- doyoulikeworms, on 03/08/2008, -2/+2I'm perplexed as to why this is getting dugg up, yet comments in the politics section just like this would get dugg down. Oh well.
- jdeuel, on 03/08/2008, -0/+2Competition?
Yeah, fox and nbc are going to start up handful of identical sites with identical programming.
The only competition is ***** sites like the defunct tvlinks. Honestly, after using hulu since it opened i can say it's pretty much everything you could ask for in free, LEGAL, tv online
- obviouscatt, on 03/08/2008, -9/+1Oh wow! Really? Thanks for the tip!
- MBX1, on 03/08/2008, -19/+12Great. More Mainstream-Media Propaganda *****.
Boycott FOX, MSNBC, CNN, etc.- SemiSarcastic, on 03/08/2008, -5/+4...and go to infowars.com where you can get all your tinfoil hat propaganda ***** and still feel informed!
- Deranged, on 03/08/2008, -2/+8yeah, what the ***** are these guys thinkin giving us free access to their shows in great quality. I couldn't imagine wanting to use that...
oh wait. i do use it, and it's great.- supermanred, on 03/08/2008, -1/+4Yeah, I can't seem to find the option to put it on my iPod... wait, I dont see the option to even watch it outside the US... uh what do the kids say nowadays...oh yeah... FAIL.
- Alegoo92, on 03/08/2008, -1/+2Yeah, cause network execs would bend over at the snap of the finger for those requests.
- MWeather, on 03/08/2008, -0/+2They don't have to. I'll just use torrents so I don't have to deal with their restrictions.
- Bamborzled, on 03/08/2008, -2/+1Yeah, because, you know, everything in the world should be free.
- Alegoo92, on 03/08/2008, -1/+2Yeah, cause network execs would bend over at the snap of the finger for those requests.
- supermanred, on 03/08/2008, -1/+4Yeah, I can't seem to find the option to put it on my iPod... wait, I dont see the option to even watch it outside the US... uh what do the kids say nowadays...oh yeah... FAIL.
- Alegoo92, on 03/08/2008, -2/+2What are they propagating?
- widgetmaker, on 03/08/2008, -3/+1Get a life.
- HaloZero, on 03/08/2008, -4/+67Your reading about what's "cool" from CNN, yah that's trustworthy
- metalkills, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1i suppose you consider yourself cool then because you dont? its a news story. its supposed to be informative. "news" to you probably consists of headlines from the onion mixed with the "hilarious" photos and videos you digg up on this site. lame.
- HaloZero, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1I trust CNN for news, this seems to be an opinion piece about Hulu itself, a judgment. I don't trust CNN's judgment on Hulu, no.
- metalkills, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1i suppose you consider yourself cool then because you dont? its a news story. its supposed to be informative. "news" to you probably consists of headlines from the onion mixed with the "hilarious" photos and videos you digg up on this site. lame.
- psevium, on 03/08/2008, -0/+34Awesome, they have a whole ~300m people to broadcast to if they keep up regional locking.
- supermanred, on 03/08/2008, -0/+4Amen.
- viewdrix, on 03/08/2008, -0/+14I hate this localization crap. I mean, Canada isn't that hard to get rights to, is it? We'll allow anything. We're pushovers.
NBC takes their stuff off YouTube to region lock it on their website and Hulu. Comedy Network, which shows many Comedy Central shows, has somehow been allowed to redirect all Canadian traffic from comedycentral.com and thedailyshow.com to their own website, so you can see only see full episodes of recent shows on their glitch-ridden video player instead of, you know, a single segment of The Daily Show, be it last night's or from 2002. I am literally unable to even see the homepage of the comedycentral.com.
***** it.- MWeather, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1I'd love to have the full episodes.
- JudgeMonkey, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1hey, I agree. They have some European site that shows a lot of stuff there and I can't access it. But then again I don't pay the tv tax or whatever it is.
So chuck a commercial up to make money that way (for all I know they already do.) Why lock yourself out of people who want to use your service?
- stinkypyper, on 03/08/2008, -8/+3***** outsourcing.....
- RedS0x, on 03/08/2008, -10/+7If anyone wants a Hulu invite, I have a few, so leave a comment or shout and I'll get right on it. ;-)
- tacojohn, on 03/08/2008, -2/+2Yeah- I have some too- it's a pretty great site (plus they have all of Arrested Development and Firefly)...shout me and I'll invite you.
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1C'Ive one?
- TheSkinsFactory, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Would love one. I'm at jschader (at) theskinsfactory.com
thanks! - supermanred, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3Im a member, but I cant watch the videos because Im logging in from Canada. Canada apparently is a far off land where we aren't allowed to watch NBC shows, unless of course we turn on the TV and tune it to.... NBC.
What idiots. - Xondar, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1I already own those shows on DVD, I got them for quite cheap too.
Plus I'm in Canada, so it's pretty worthless.
- digitalhippie, on 03/08/2008, -1/+1Could I please have one?
- bs0l, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Same, I have 9 left. Message me or leave a comment or something.

- cdn415, on 03/08/2008, -0/+0I would really like one too if you still have any. cdn415 (at) gmail dot com

jamiethomasrules (at) yahoo dot com
Thanks! - bs0l, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Just so everyone knows, hulu is now open for all, so I can't invite you, but you can just sign up here: https://secure.hulu.com/signup
- superdog87, on 03/08/2008, -0/+2or go to inviteshare.com
- LThermidor, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1That'd be much appreciated.
- Philbert, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3Invite? I just typed in my email address, waited 2 days, and was accepted.
- smarterthanu, on 03/08/2008, -0/+0I want one :)
- JarekB, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1I'd like one also jarekb (at) gmail dot com
thianks
- tacojohn, on 03/08/2008, -2/+2Yeah- I have some too- it's a pretty great site (plus they have all of Arrested Development and Firefly)...shout me and I'll invite you.
- thunderl, on 03/08/2008, -2/+123"Unfortunately this video is not currently available in your country or region." - oh, it's a real YouTube killer!
- chall85, on 03/08/2008, -17/+2youtube will be doing the same thing soon.
- Daniel591992, on 03/08/2008, -2/+25"Sorry, this video has been removed due to a Copyright claim by Viacom Inc."
- MWeather, on 03/08/2008, -0/+10Oh well, you'll have to watch one of the other 30 copes of the video.
- Daniel591992, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1that's true
- MWeather, on 03/08/2008, -0/+10Oh well, you'll have to watch one of the other 30 copes of the video.
- Hoogs, on 03/08/2008, -9/+1Usually if I get that error, refreshing the page will fix it.
- TomTruelle, on 03/08/2008, -8/+2ever heard of a proxy?
- kazamx, on 03/08/2008, -0/+7Proxy for streaming video is either crappy and keeps stopping or expensive.
- MegaHz, on 03/08/2008, -2/+5plus, why put up with it when we can just download full episodes of the shows we want and watch them on our TVs with devices like Tvix
- bouche, on 03/08/2008, -3/+6does your mom know about proxy?
- widgetmaker, on 03/08/2008, -1/+3Youtube is doing that already for some stuff.
- bouche, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1pretty much what I was thinking.
- mRIpX, on 03/08/2008, -2/+2buried for "so and so" killer
- TheTaint, on 03/08/2008, -10/+1The only video media I watch is hard-core gangsta porn. Youtube did have this section 2 years ago, but since then they've turned into pussies. Maybe Hulu will supply my gangsta pr0n.
- Kastang, on 03/08/2008, -3/+11The lack of "Full Episodes" on Hulu is my only complaint. For most shows there are several dozen "Clips" and only a few Episodes. The episodes are good quality though and I can live with the "commercials" they have.
- johnnyb3, on 03/08/2008, -0/+7I agree. I think the interview with one of CBS' online media guys said how people are looking more towards "clips". I personally would rather watch the show and not just a fragment.
- Philbert, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Most shows? Most of the shows I looked at were not just full episodes but full seasons. Roswell, American Gothic, Arrested Development, The Loop, all full seasons.
- antdude, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1What about other shows? No all episodes exist.
- Philbert, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Most shows? Most of the shows I looked at were not just full episodes but full seasons. Roswell, American Gothic, Arrested Development, The Loop, all full seasons.
- chewties, on 03/08/2008, -0/+5seriously, i feel sick when i see a commercial online
- Darkhacker, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1I feel sick that it's taken this ***** long for the corporate executives to stop fearing the internet. "Oh noez! Teknolojeez!" Seriously, the whole reason that shows are even put on television are for ad revenue. If "nothing's on" then you just lost a viewer and ad revenue. If the viewer can choose what they watch, then you got them watching your network a lot more often.
I would gladly watch ads, even full blown video commercials, to be able to choose what I watch and when. Anybody with half a brain has been saying that the internet would be the new medium for everything since the late 90s. It happened with music and iTunes, which have all but killed CDs, and it's going to happen with movies and TV.

- kazamx, on 03/08/2008, -3/+1well we get the uiplayer, 4OD etc.
- dierobots, on 03/08/2008, -10/+3hah! fox and nbc's HOTTEST SHOWS? i haven't watched either of those networks in years.
- Deranged, on 03/08/2008, -0/+8By the looks of their ratings, doesn't look like they need ya...
- stvspl, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3Yeah, like ABC and CBS are that much better?
NBC consistently makes the best shows, though I admit there are also some ***** ones.
- r00tus3r, on 03/08/2008, -5/+33I KNEW this ***** would only be available in the US. DAMN IT!
- chall85, on 03/08/2008, -1/+14well it is OUR taxes that subsidize GE/NBC and the rest....
- supermanred, on 03/08/2008, -4/+3Your taxes went to Haliburton stop *****. We all know you got scammed out of 3 trillion dollars and are in a recession now. No need to attempt to hide your shame, the world already knows.
Hell, if you guys vote in another republican President after these 2 ***** in the ass, we'll laugh our heads off at your downfall.- BenKenobi88, on 03/08/2008, -1/+3I don't really care about what you just said, but it's not like NBC is NOT American...so its shows only being available in the US is not that shocking.
- MWeather, on 03/08/2008, -2/+3Yeah, because the Democrats haven't been ***** us in the ass too. Though to their credit, they use lube.

- CookieCutter, on 03/08/2008, -9/+10hulu is fantastic... i dropped my cable TV a while back, and use my linux-ps3 as a media station hooked to the TV and watch Hulu with a presentation mouse. Got iTunes in wine for cheapy movie downloads in HD. Only thing i miss is Discovery. rather then paying 55 bucks a month for cable TV i now use Hulu and iTunes.
- cwings, on 03/08/2008, -2/+11You sound like the type of person who gets a lot of tail.
- JudgeMonkey, on 03/08/2008, -1/+5Yes, his methods for obtaining television shows are a wonderful indicator of... anything.
- CookieCutter, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1you sir, are correct.
- cwings, on 03/08/2008, -2/+11You sound like the type of person who gets a lot of tail.
- Vostok, on 03/08/2008, -3/+31Maybe I'm in the minority here but I like Hulu alot, but I don't think it's a threat to youtube, they host completely different types of video. Hulu is nice because I can watch current shows on my time rather then network time which means I can go to that kegger and then the next morning sooth my hang over with a good show.
I also find it mildly ironic that since the commercial breaks are so short I actually watch them. 30 seconds isn't enough time to get up or channel surface, so I actually sit there and pay attention to the advertisments.- Deranged, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3Yeah, I agree. The content is completely different, and the commercials are tolerable.
It's like having a DVR without having to do any recording. - RobotChicken1, on 03/08/2008, -1/+230 seconds is definitely enough of my time to spend watching an ad. Usually it's only 1 anyway. I might even click the ad if it's relevant.
- Philbert, on 03/08/2008, -0/+6I don't mind the commercials, I just wish they'd get a bigger variety. One show I watched (Roswell I think) had the same "labyrinth city" commercial in every episode and it gets really annoying. Imagine... I'm actually asking for more commercials.
- Deranged, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3Yeah, I agree. The content is completely different, and the commercials are tolerable.
- zeiben, on 03/08/2008, -2/+9I have to say, watching a Hulu show connected to my TV is every bit as good as watching standard def. What's irritating is not being able to use my apple remote or something to pause and fast forward, but that's a small tradeoff for it being nearly commercial free. The quality and interface is way better than what networks have on their websites. A Hulu device to compete with Apple TV would be very attractive. Make the whole thing smart enough to understand my advertising preferences and subject me only to ads for things I care about, and you've got me very interested. Add a provision for downloading in the background and let me send shows to my iphone or ipod (with the ads, if you want, as long as I care about them) and I'm sold.
Get all that working without a bunch of proprietary nonsense and let people put up their podcasts and other vids, and yes, youTube will definitely need to worry, but until then, the only thing they have to fear is people realizing that "evolution of dance" is really not that funny.- Atomic1fire, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1And that professional content will last longer then everyone thinks it will.
Fresh is good
but your dealing with a million dollar industry vs a service full of people who think they are funny and/or interesting and uploaded copyright infringement
The biggest divide is payed writers and high quality studios
Youtube is great but Hulu still wins because hollywood is getting smarter to the new tactics.
Hulu has what people have seen and like
Youtube has people trying to get attention and sometimes winning at that
- Atomic1fire, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1And that professional content will last longer then everyone thinks it will.
- Thinker10, on 03/08/2008, -1/+5I've been using my Hulu account for a few weeks now. It's nice in that you can watch a lot of different shows legally and the short commercials are not annoying. The selection could be improved, but I don't mind that much considering that it's a free service.
Unfortunately, I've had some issues with the videos not streaming properly. Long story short, I'm nerdy enough to know that it's their connection or server, not me.
I'm hoping that as Hulu gathers momentum, these issues will be addressed.- Philbert, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3Hmm I've had a very pleasant time with their videos, no skipping or anything, just like watching it on TV.
- adderx99, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1sorry, but its you.
- garbanzo, on 03/08/2008, -4/+10Two words that YouTube doesn't need to fear: Private Beta.
- SSUK, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1YouTube's owned by Google, it was put back into permanent beta some time ago itself.
- Atomic1fire, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Youtube looses now
Hulu is open to the public
caters to people by letting them show people funny stuff on a tv show without having to watch a whole episode and legally at that- garbanzo, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1They should get a screwdriver or a wrench or something and fix their looseness problem. Sometimes when I let my dog loose he sniffs at losers. Lern inglish dood.
- chall85, on 03/08/2008, -1/+6I like hulu. Especially since I don't have cable (and don't ever plan on getting it) and, living in a rural area more than 30 miles from a transmitter, I will most likely lose my entire TV signal after the switch to digital. Funny that I can get high-speed internet but not good old TV. Sure I can always download a torrent, but sometimes I don't feel like taking up the disk space.
- DCstewieG, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Unless you pick up a VERY fuzzy analog signal, I would bet you get all the channels you do now but in perfect quality.
- chall85, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1some are a little fuzzy. they would be really bad except we have a big antennae on top of our house.
- DCstewieG, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1Unless you pick up a VERY fuzzy analog signal, I would bet you get all the channels you do now but in perfect quality.
- contradictator, on 03/08/2008, -8/+18Not available outside the U.S.
Yeah, nice job, very revolutionary.- Scottievm, on 03/08/2008, -4/+5That's why it fails from the get-go.
- ssechaud, on 03/08/2008, -3/+2Damn, I just dugg you down by accident! Sorry! I was just thinking that Hulu isn't even available worldwide yet, so I don't think it has a chance of making YouTube worry about anything unless Hulu intends to go worldwide. Digg should really let people undigg people for when you do what I just done.
- toxicityj, on 03/08/2008, -4/+1A lot of things start off only available in the US. But they eventually spread to the rest of the world and do great. So complain if you want, but I guarantee in a few months Hulu will be available for everyone else.
- kazamx, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3Hulu won't. The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 are all getting together to launch an online solution together. Think iPlayer but for all main UK TV
- Philbert, on 03/08/2008, -1/+2Currently I think they're still trying to get US commercials, I wouldn't expect them to have commercials from foreign countries just yet.
- Atomic1fire, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Because of a little thing called contracts
Wait till the channels that show those shows in those countrys decide they want to take advantage of the webspace and viewers
Stick the channel branding for that country on a localized version of hulu
and they will be happy
- toxicityj, on 03/08/2008, -4/+9what? They're completely different things. They share the same general technology (streaming video), but thats about it. You tube isn't a reliable source for TV show viewing at all. What few TV shows there are on youtube are usually terrible quality at low resolution and almost always taken down a few weeks after they're posted. Hulu on the other hand has legal content that stays there in high def.
- dildoolielly, on 03/08/2008, -5/+3YouTube is a wonderful source of learning information, especially "howto" information and product reviews. Its a community of individual. The "featured" crap they have on the YouTube frontpage, is just that, CRAP.
Hulu is obviously nothing BUT crap.- toxicityj, on 03/08/2008, -3/+3you're nothing but crap (that's right. I'm resorting to 3rd grade insults, poop face). have you even used Hulu? They've got a ton of TV shows to watch. All in amazing quality and damn good resolution. But yes, youtube is a great source of howto and can be an excellent educational tool. But Hulu didn't set out to become the next youtube. they set out to make a great place to stream TV shows for free. And they're doing a damn good job of it.
On top of that, Hulu isn't covered from head to toe in stupid comments from 10 year old kids who have the intelligence of a rat.- dildoolielly, on 03/09/2008, -0/+2Amerikan TV is for retards. "Entertainment" created specifically for the dumbest in our society. Only idiots would actually watch that crap on a computer screen, like you.

- imanalias, on 03/08/2008, -3/+5I agree that youtube and hulu probably attract different audiences . . . . but I think Hulu's built a good model for making mainstream programming accessible. For someone who doesn't subscribe to cable, and doesn't download shows using bittorrent, it's a good place to find quality television shows that you can't get (legally) elsewhere without buying/renting (e.g. Firefly, Battlestar Galactica to name two of my favorites). If you haven't signed-up, you should give it a try.
And yes, I know that there are innumerable quasi-legal/illegal sites that have better content selection. . . but this is a great first-step to building an industry-supported site that can compete. - viksmaester, on 03/08/2008, -4/+16Youtube has no reason to worry. Hulu doesn't work outside USA.
- noPCtoday, on 03/08/2008, -3/+24Yeah Nice strategy there Fox and NBC, restricting all the foreigners including canada from watching your videos.
- supermanred, on 03/08/2008, -6/+1Here you go:
On a Mac I suggest you download "Transmission.app" and put it in your apps directory.
On a PC I recommend any torrent client you can find. I forgot the name of the one I used to use.

COUGH Nazism COUGH
- kindrobot, on 03/08/2008, -1/+5Hulu isn't a youtube killer. But I still welcome one. All you have to do to get a video deleted is offend a handful of people. Lately, they delete first and ask themselves if it made sense to do so later, if they ever even get to that stage.
- modernhumorist, on 03/08/2008, -5/+3From Hulu.com
For now, videos are available for streaming from the U.S. only. Our intention is to make Hulu's growing content lineup available worldwide and will continue to work with our content partners to clear rights internationally to make great programming available across the globe.
...They're working on it.- aladrin, on 03/08/2008, -0/+2lol You're getting dugg down because everyone's having fun bitching about nothing. I think that's hilarious.
- samfishercell, on 03/08/2008, -1/+7Sidenote: I was watching some Arrested Development on Hulu the other day and noticed it was being touted as a "New Classic." I'm glad they speak so highly of it (and apparently recognize everyone's love for it), yet were also in charge of canning it.
- JudgeMonkey, on 03/08/2008, -0/+3That's fox for ya.
- SpongeBad, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1Actually, I give Fox a lot of credit for Arrested Development. It stayed on for three seasons, even though the ratings were horrible. Fox gave it a fair chance, the audience didn't show up. And this way it was off the air before it started to suck.
Having said that, I really hope they make an AD movie (and that it's good).

- tyrione, on 03/08/2008, -3/+0What is with this "Hulu's U.S. programmers work into the night (above), send specs to Beijing (below), and get code back in the morning."
It's a corporate Intranet that runs central repositories. This isn't new. But of course, the media wants to make this into some quasi regional, 24/7 machine willing to take over the world.
Most large corporations have developers globally positioned and working remotely.
Next. - dhollister, on 03/08/2008, -4/+1Just because YouTube's market isn't currently the TV crowd doesn't mean that's where they want it. If Google had their way, you would all be watching TV on YouTube. Look how they're trying to court filmmakers to use YouTube as a distribution platform for shows. Also look at how many people do watch clips from TV shows (Leno, Jon Stewart, etc) on YouTube.
This is most definitely relevant. As time goes on, the line between television and web shows is going to be blurred further, and Hulu would be considered a competitor to YouTube... maybe not the sites itself, but the distribution platforms the two represent. - Wronghead, on 03/08/2008, -0/+12Look out telephone!
Here comes radio!
IT MAKES NOISES TOO!- linharesalex, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1And is totally WIRELESS!
- aserer511, on 03/08/2008, -3/+1not bad. quality seems good, I wasn't able to get full screen but I didn't sign up so maybe that's reserved for peopel who sign up. also I hope shows aren't all broken down into clips; I hope you can watch them in entirety
- Philbert, on 03/08/2008, -0/+1I didn't even know you could watch without signing up. Full screen works fine for me, I've watched a number of entire seasons of shows I never saw when they aired and it was great, just like watching TV.
- phogasmic, on 03/08/2008, -1/+2hulu is pretty cool. I am surprised that the studios were able to make something so user friendly. I don't think they pose too much of a threat to youtube though, youtube is more threatened by sites that allow user created videos.

- kds405, on 03/08/2008, -0/+6I don't see it them as the same sort of thing. It's a website to watch TV shows and clips of TV shows. Youtube is more about user-generated.
