- sunchild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Synopsis for the lazy:
I was a mediocre student with no job prospects when I graduated. I leeched off my girlfriend until she ran away to Australia to meet surfers. Microsoft, after rejecting me once, changed its tune and realized that my mediocrity would be a perfect fit. I was tasked with building Internet Explorer. I am so proud of myself for being responsible for making software that has a huge marketshare. I am oblivious to the fact that IE sucks hard boiled eggs (didn't you always know it was a guy like me behind Internet Exploder?) Looking back on my ten year career, I saw a horde of angry end users carrying torches and being led a scary fire-breathing fox beast. So, I ran away from Redmond and started playing guitar at junior high assemblies. I published a book for O'Reilly about project management--LOL! Suckers! - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Be advised, the essay has almost nothing to do with Microsoft.
- maxnb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>And can someone explain to me how a story with only twenty-three diggs gets on the front page?
I though about this, it must be that digg has some kind of administrator that can put story he finds interesting to front page, it must be that since it has been happening a lot of times with stories that had to few digs to make it to front page. That's my theory and if it's true then digg is not run by us the users but by some hidden editor/administartors... - GreenSlabOfClay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Good - A fantastic career history.
The Bad - Reality of knowing something is missing even at the top.
The Ugly - IE... Firefox kicks ass!
Do you *not* have children? - TimCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Boring, no digg. Also, if that's the best he can write he should have stayed with Microsoft.
- Gringo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So basically he is saying he made enough money during his tenure at Microsoft developing a crappy browser to retire at an early age.
- Pentarix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0vote lame on this crap
- twylight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This doesnt even get a 1 out of 10 on the *****
- ahdanielsan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I once had the pleasure to work closely with a very smart CEO who once told me that you should have 3 jobs in 5 years. That can be 3 different positions in the same company, but you really need to change. You need to leave after 5 years, if you don't then you're stuck for good, and probably useless."
That, my friend, is a pile of *****. Move if you get bored with your job, but don't feel compelled to, just because of some ticking, job-bomb! It's crapola like this that makes people feel the need to move, even when they're in a job that they love. It also often results in people ending up in jobs that just aren't right for them. - rebusrms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the story left me empty and wanting more
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good lord, think I'll start a blog to whine about leaving a good paying job, and try and get on digg. Shouldnt this crap be screened? All he said was "I needed to find more meaning" or some crap...welcome to life, here's your sign.
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who gives a crud?
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I left my last company for the same reason. Millions of people do, as well. It wasn't Microsoft that I left from so I guess I won't get any hype. No offense dude, but who cares? Unless it's something juicy, save your energy for writing that novel of yours. And no pun intended, but you might want to seek some help. You sound depressed.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0boring.
- oonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great, but this doesn't belong on Digg... it belongs in Readers Digest.
- pvz1212a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boy, so many people with opinions, but without knowledge. This guys has an interesting website, and an interesting forum about project management. I have his book and it's pretty good. I bet he has a good carreer right now consulting on project management.
Please, do some research before you displaying your ignorance... - john72carter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0altogether now... awe
- kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because he said Microsoft.
- portis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is this on digg? If I wanted to read a rant on someones life, i'd visit xanga or something.
- rob08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no digg, too commercially
- sspooner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I once had the pleasure to work closely with a very smart CEO who once told me that you should have 3 jobs in 5 years. That can be 3 different positions in the same company, but you really need to change. You need to leave after 5 years, if you don't then you're stuck for good, and probably useless.
This guys stayed at Microsoft 10 years and was probably totally bored (useless), I hope he goes onto something much more interesting and fullfilling.
BTW : I've been a software engineer for over 25 years, I now work for myself and no two jobs are the same, it's the way to keep yourself on your toes ! (not to mention 300k a year, a big house, fancy car and two very fat cats) - systemghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's it?
- Postoasted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this is spam. He's trying to sell his book.
- ximmortaldeathx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This guy is too muych of an emo. Its like, dude ,you made a hell of a lot of money, and you're bored to work out of such a powerful company. GO work for Apple or something, see if you get a bang out of life!!
- oreocookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No wonder IE sucks. They hire a kid straight out of school and make him a project team leader.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well that was a letdown. He could have worked at any company and told this story. Just another gen X youth story who can't find his way.
- Pentarix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so ***** what, he left, who cares?
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing to do with microsoft or tech in general. why can't there be a thing where enough people mark ' ok this is lame" and let the digg die
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In fact while you went to college, I was doing drugs and mind expansion and being fuking creative."
indeed... - mrgomel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sspooner,
shouldn't that be "two very fat KIDS" ? - mxscope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm how come there are so many digs for this piece of.. well... text
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I kept waiting for the interesting part, but it never happened."
Me too
Also, for those who thinks "IE sucks", in that time (1995) it wasnt that bad... and, if it was, none of us knew it. - elrawtic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good read, although I was hoping to get more detailed reason as of why he left from the title.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, if you were an IE programmer, you should have been fired.
- supercarrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cant agree less with what most of the people are saying, this is not a hi tech story but an interesting one about someone whose life has had a far reaching effect in the tech field. I think that it is interesting that he left the pinnacle of commercial software development for 'writing' and hasn't look back?? Cool, would like to know more. Interesting story, interesting person.
- heyitsmedusty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0from his sensitive little essay: "I pulled out the beaten up novel, and the half written essays, and planned a life around the writing of things, the deepest, scariest, truest dream I had."
from the footnote directly afterward: "Scott's first book, the art of project management, all about successfully leading and managing teams of people, was just published by O'Reilly on April 30th 2005 and is on sale now."
sounds deep and scary to me, Scott. - Big_E103, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This guy is stuipd why would you leave that great comp.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn, if I wanted a soap opera, no digg. Boredom. Don't care. His life is great.
Guess what little *****, I don't have a college degree and I got in this buisness just fine. I didn't panic. In fact while you went to college, I was doing drugs and mind expansion and being fuking creative. While the best you could do was whine. - a1lostnomad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This man needs a family, or a hobbie. Work is not supposed to be the part of life where you answer all those pressing life questions. Work is for funding adventures that help you discover the answers.
He wrote his own "About" page in the third person, you would think that a professional writer would know that third person autobiographies are lame.
"Third person autobiography", wow, I wonder if thats a paradox :-) - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg for CMU alumni.
- angelschambers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where are the vultures when you need em? THAT AIN'T TECH NEWS!!!
- nihilator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And can someone explain to me how a story with only twenty-three diggs gets on the front page?
posted by timcat
I believe it's because those diggs occurred in a short time span, so it seems like it's based on diggs per hour or something. Perhaps those 23 diggs were all within 5 minutes. - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys are all taking this out of concept. It's just some guy blogging about his experiences. He was talking to his readers which we assume would be more interested in it. If it was a blogger you've been following for a year or so, this would be a fantastic piece (the submitter's probably in that group). But it doesn't really belong on Digg because it wasn't intended for such a different audience... that's why you all are having trouble with it.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0blah blah blah, nothing special....another employee venting big freakin deal.
- Diggnified, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good read.
- Dellitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this idiot was lucky enough to work for Microsoft and he crys .. get out and MOVE ASIDE - WE have work to do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- wbrendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This artical is fluff, and it has VERY little to do with Microsoft.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0because this is microsoft, it's somehow digg worthy ? there are millions of people around the world leaving companies because they are unhappy, who freaking cares.
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he should have gone to a psychologist and not microsoft. the poor guy is lonely. someone hug him.
