- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -10/+120IE needs to dIE!
- natmaster, on 06/05/2008, -15/+101Speaking of Firefox 3, RC2 was released today.
Digg the release notes for RC2: http://digg.com/software/Official_Firefox_3_RC2_re ...
and download it: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-rc.html - thenonhacker, on 06/05/2008, -2/+49Firefox can PWN IE marketshare even more with the speed + performance improvements!
- spambutcher, on 06/05/2008, -5/+45Firefox 3.0's best feature is that it's not Firefox 2.0.
Anyone else remember 2.0 eating up 650mb of RAM on a 1GB system? Oh - that's right - it's "caching" for "optimal performance."
I've been running 3.0 betas for so long - it's easy to forget that 2.0 is still the "official" shipping version.
Firefox 1.5 rocked, Firefox 2.0 was total bloatware, Firefox 3.0 rocks again.
Thank you Firefox developers! It's so rare to see software get smaller and faster after starting to slip... - wetdirtmud, on 06/05/2008, -1/+39Would do business with again A++++
- mossblaser, on 06/05/2008, -1/+34You sir, are a hindrance towards all web developers
- HMMcKamikaze, on 06/05/2008, -0/+32If we were in prison, I would protect you in the shower. Highly Recommended! A++++
- MxM111, on 06/05/2008, -1/+30While I prefer Firefox, I think competition is useful. Firefox would not be so good if it is not for competition with IE.
- init100, on 06/05/2008, -1/+22You can still thank the Firefox developers for putting a blowtorch to Microsoft's butt. If it hadn't been for Firefox, you would still be using IE 6.
- BlackholeStorm, on 06/05/2008, -0/+20I think the "digg it" button basically means the same thing.
- mattus, on 06/05/2008, -0/+19I can assure you that it will, since I'm typing this from FF3 on SP2. Why would Mozilla not support XP SP2? Think before you start spreading misinformation.
- Sirlolalot, on 06/05/2008, -0/+17lol, a fan boy calling others fan boys, genius!
I'm an opera user, but you've got to admit FF3 is a great browser, credit where it's due. - InorganicMatter, on 06/05/2008, -10/+26Firefox 3 matters because it leaps past IE, Opera, Safari, and all the little browsers, in EVERY SINGLE category. Speed, reliability, "the little things," it's got it all!
- mynameistux, on 06/05/2008, -2/+18FAIL
- newsLinux, on 06/05/2008, -2/+18Thank you Firefox for making my internet browsing experience wonderful. Kudos to the Firefox developers!!
- ElBeh, on 06/05/2008, -1/+16Terrific article! I've been keeping up with the FF3 Betas and RCs, but I had no idea about that Offline Support feature!
- EvilDude, on 06/05/2008, -1/+16You say it like it's related, but not directly mentioned.. The summary of the story mentions it and so does the first paragraph in the story, specifically, "RC2 released today".
- Frecklefoot, on 06/05/2008, -1/+15Bill Gates is a Digger?
- tech10171968, on 06/05/2008, -1/+14Dugg. Just for the record I'm an Opera fanboy, but I will always give credit where it is due. Firefox has come a long way so far, and Mozilla has done a fine job with this version. I can't wait to see how well the final release does, and I'm definitely looking forward to putting it on my machine.
So far it looks to me as if Mozilla's got themselves a winner with Firefox 3. - thegreatanti, on 06/05/2008, -6/+18Firefox 3 will set the new standard in the browser landscape.
- fLUx1337, on 06/05/2008, -0/+11Well FF2 could have pwned the IE market.....
IE only has its market share because 90% of computer users are newbies and think the internet IS that blue "e" on their desktop. - bparkey, on 06/05/2008, -4/+14Of course, it will again be playing catchup to Opera when 9.5 comes out. Especially in the speed department.
Not that it matters too much. Different strokes for different folks. I think out of the box Opera has better features, but it is hard to argue with the sheer number of add-ons for Firefox.
Just as long as the word gets out to people that IE is the worst of the worst. On a slow connection it is a truly frustrating experience. By my calculations both FireFox and Opera are a million times faster than IE on the same connection. - arjie, on 06/05/2008, -0/+10That offline support thing that they mention on the second page sounds pretty interesting.
- whiteeagle131, on 06/05/2008, -0/+9+1
I am also an Opera fanboy but I don't try people to escape from Firefox, I just tell them to try other browsers.
And as for IE users, I actually *make* them switch to another browser! - Kozy, on 06/05/2008, -0/+9I'll start using Firefox 3 over Safari once they fix their scrolling on Leopard; with smooth scrolling ticked it's too inaccurate and with it unticked it's jerky, the difference is extremely noticeable when going from Safari to Firefox and it seems like such a basic problem! I keep praying they've fixed it with every new release but now it's almost final the problem remains. (a quick google search shows i'm not the only one to find this annoying)
- demodawid, on 06/05/2008, -0/+9i.e: cease to exist.
- Picer, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8Your Grandma puts me to shame...
- Drgn547, on 06/05/2008, -0/+8If you want to test FF 3 RC2 without overwriting your other FF install(s), try the portable edition:
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_port ... - chanop, on 06/05/2008, -0/+7That's retarded, everyone knows AOL is the internet
- JQP123, on 06/05/2008, -0/+7sudo apt-get install libstdc++5
sudo cp -R ~/.mozilla ~/.mozillabackup
Download firefox-3.0b2.tar.bz2 file
sudo tar -C /opt -jxvf firefox-3.0b2.tar.bz2
cd /opt/firefox/plugins/
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/* .
sudo dpkg-divert --divert /usr/bin/firefox.ubuntu --rename /usr/bin/firefox
sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox
sudo dpkg-divert --divert /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox.ubuntu --rename /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox
sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox
This will complete the installation of firefox 3.0b2. So simple and easy that even grandma can do it. - ubuwalker31, on 06/05/2008, -1/+8Submit a bug report. Worked fine for me.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -3/+9thank you captain obvious
- srg13, on 06/05/2008, -1/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox
"Mozilla Firefox (abbreviated officially as Fx, but also commonly as FF), is a web browser..." - bluntphallus, on 06/05/2008, -0/+6Any chance you could take that request up with Microsoft, since they're the ones that made Outlook Web Access?
- mjesales, on 06/05/2008, -1/+7I just switched from RC1 to RC2 today - So far so good. Looks like they have made it more stable.
- ataylor32, on 06/05/2008, -2/+8Firefox 3 is, indeed, amazing. I especially love the "awesome bar". However, I wish the search would not only highlight the search terms, but dim the rest of the web page as well (like Safari). Resizable text areas would be nice too. There are probably add-ons for both of those features, but it seems like those should both be built-in, even if they're disabled by default. Other than those two things, I've been absolutely loving FF3.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -4/+9Opera sucks.
- insertAliasHere, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5Did you seriously use "Failfox," "elite," and "only true browser" in your post and then call others fanboys?
***** wow. - bluntphallus, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5That's why it's a test version, and that's why you should backup your profile first.
- zephyr42, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5Competition is FANTASTIC, don't get me wrong I hate IE more than anything and avoid it at all costs. The fact of the matter is, *fair* competition is what brought us firefox to begin with and why it's gaining ground. When monopolies occur like what happened with netscape and the subsequent generations of IE that we see a problem with no competition.
- HeavyWave, on 06/05/2008, -1/+6I still prefer Opera for 2 reasons: you can move address bar to the bottom, you can disable scroll bars. All the other features are pretty much the same, except Opera is actually faster and less memory consuming.

- JQP123, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5Replace "3.0b2" with "3.0rc2"
- CountRyan, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4This annoys the life out of me, and I really wish Mozilla developers would fix it. People have been complaining for years now, but I suppose Mac users' problems aren't really that important overall..
- btraxx, on 06/05/2008, -1/+5I'm really liking FF3. Can't wait for the computers on campus to upgrade as well. On all the computers they have have FF2 and IE, I hate it when someone takes a computer next to me and opens IE when FF is right next to it!! gahhh.
- nowhereelse, on 06/05/2008, -1/+5You forgot to mention that your grandma was Richard Feynman.
