- latova, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Thats a rather big step. Financial management is a rather big line to cross with trusting google. They have my emails, search histories and conversation logs, and thats the kind of information I trust them with. But having an entire company financial data behind one username and password is like gold for hackers. They've been very good with account security up to now, but having such a sensitive service may be their undoing.

- mcflynnthm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I had been hoping that what Google Earth was, but alas, it's merely the map software we know and love (and have yet to be enslaved by).

- eean, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Much of the current apps seems pretty underpowered, outside of GMail. I'm guessing the next step is continue developing what they have.
- JesseJericho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I would like to see the Google personalized home page become a little more refined, a la PageFlakes or Netvibes.
- roeboedog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why does everyone say:
Google Spreadsheets (coming)
Writely Word Processor (coming)
Headline News said the same thing this weekend. I use both. Am I the only one? - brs165, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6By creating a cohesive GoogleOS. That allows you to use the services on/offline and auto sync all your data.
- peanuckle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I would suppose they would get a few of their apps out of beta first, but eh.
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ioannusdeverani "but how long until consumer trust runs out?" Is that even a valid question? Consumer trust isn't some natural resource, it's something you earn and maintain. The question is, "Has google built their brand trust well enough to get consumers to trust them with their financial data?"
- ImJasonH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I sincerely doubt they'll do that. I think the next big release will be GDrive (which has been rumored for a while) that will compete with Amazon's S3 to provide not only (G)Hosting but also an automated backup of all your important data.
And while they have your data, they'll mine it to find out what advertisements to show you. This leads to a lot more benefit to their main business (advertising) than some kind of half-cocked online financial software. - gkoberger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I trust Google a lot, but I can seen no way I would want my financial information anywhere but on my own computer. With all the data leaks we've been seeing, its only a matter of time before Google has an "opps" moment.
At least we probably dont have to worry about them releasing our financial information anynomously for "research purposes"- but imagine the funny things we'd uncover if that happened.
And on top of security issues, can you imagine the targeted AdSense ads? "Find Local Soup Kitchens In Your Area" - OropheR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think this article was just wind... Google needs to improve the current products avalaible , and to continue to follow what the people need. "A Web-based accounting and finance software application!" is not what the people need. Donna Bogatin = pure cerebral masturbation. (sorry if i am rude)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3jesse - Google already does weather; just do a Google search for weather + your zip code:
(http://www.google.com/search?hs=IOo&hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=weather+12345&btnG=Search) Example for zip 12345
Google doesn't need a "destination" page for most of their stuff, it is integrated right in the search interface. Movies, just do movie: [movie title] in your search.. music, same thing..
(http://www.google.com/musicsearch?q=music%3A+pink+floyd&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official) music: pink floyd anyone? - jessecollins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Although, I can definitely see a weather.google.com coming...
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"google does things we least expect"
My expectation is that they continue doing what they have been doing, release a beta web application of limited functionality that sends Microsoft into a panic and gets Balmer all riled up. - ryaninc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Okay, this might seem random...but I'd love a Cartoon Search for Google. I am always thinking, "There was a Farside that talked about that," or "I saw that in a Dilbert once," and I'd love to be able to find those, "I saw a cartoon about that once," moments. Anyone else?
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2do a google local search and let it save your location.
Then when you next search for a movie title in regular google, it will give showtimes at local theaters - elvirs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ioannusdeverani
but they can give it a sweet look of gmail.
round corners and blue tone:) - vedichymn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hahahahha
ahahahhaha
oh god that's hilarious.
They wrote a webmail client, simple web calendar and bought some other companies, so their next step should be making an operating system that does EVERYTHING the way that a very small subset of the computing market wants.
OH MAN WHY HAVEN'T THEY MADE YOU PRESIDENT AND CEO YET. - ramow, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1MUST see~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Check out my google page creator webpage: http://rami.name/ - PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1didn't someone have that back in the day.. i think it was x drive?
- latova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The trust varies from person to person. Some people are willing to spill out all their information to google, some people won't even visit google unless they're behind at least 3 proxies. If they're considering internet-based financial software, then they're pushing it. As gkoberger said, they're overdue for an "oops moment".
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Agreed. I think if you look at the "apps" they release, its more for effect than for business. Considering most of them are the results of the 20% project time, the public releases may have more to do with causing panic at MS and less to do with something serious. Other than GMail, most of these "apps" don't even display advertising.
- digital1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2GPed, ad driven scooter with GMap navigation system, all the rider needs to do is enter a query string and off you go, but beware of the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.

One word: TrueCrypt - akauffman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google is going toward targeted marketing based on location/GPS. It stands to reason since that's where they make their money. Imagine the demographics they have for marketing if they know your location! They would know driving conditions, weather, and what businesses are new where you are.
Suppose driving conditions are bad and it's 115 degrees, Google generates an alternative route, taking you by a local ice cream stand that has advertised with Google and on your way you hear a commercial over your satellite radio advertising this ice cream stand.
Google is going to make it so we don't even have to think, they do it for us. That's evil! - chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4file storage please.
- stickystyle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3They will release a kick ass FPS.
Wow look at me! I can deam up with random ideas on what a very private company is going to do next. Lame. - ioannusdeverani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes. Google IG is not very nice to look at. I have switched to Netvibes. However, I don't think that Google really can change ig very much because it fits so well into the Google ui that we know.
This is a tough one. - slackor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4games.google.com
- PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Somone already said that....
- moop2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I wouldn't be too worried. I feel safer with my information with Google than other companies, mainly because Google is focused on the Internet industry, instead of just another department like many other financial companies.
I know there are many other Financial apps out there, but they are all too big and too much for me. I want something simple to help me manage a couple of savings and checking accounts, and work towards paying off some debt. I don't need a stock portfolio manager or a mortgage calculator, etc. Anyone know of any products that aimed for the very light user? Money and Quicken are bigger than I want. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it's not "beta" but it is still a "Google Labs" product. So it isn't really an official thing either yet.
from the Google Web Accelerator FAQ:
"Please note that Google Web Accelerator is currently a Google Labs product. If you have any problems using it or have suggestions for how we can improve it, please see the Google Group devoted to it." - jdkane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Google office apps cannot compete against Open Office or Microsoft Office. It's not the fault of Google, it's the fault of the browser. A browser is incapable of rendering an office app that can compete.
If Google creates a financial app, it won't complete either, same reason - because of the state of the browser environment.
Plus people don't want their financial information stored on a Google server. Most don't like a word processing doc stored there. - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Its not entirely clear to me that the credit card companies care that much about the data they have of ours as much as google does. They are also in the business of selling and leveraging that data which exposes them greatly. The huge credit fraud/theft issue for the credit industry is bizzare, the idea that they make money off it is amazingly complex. They obviously don't care as much about it as we ever would.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0no your not the only one - i use both too. Perhaps spreadsheets still requires an invite? Writely doesn't anymore. Good quesiton though - I was wondering the same thing when I saw it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm guessing webhosting from google will be coming soon.
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3They're already donating free hosting to Wikipedia. So is Yahoo.
