For those who want to skip the article by Livescience. - Rayza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Waldo?
- Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11This will make my stalking hobby much easier! Thanks Polar Rose!
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They all look the same.
- atreyue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6so your girlfriend can find the naked pics you took of her and told her you destroyed...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this is a new implimentation of the same technology. this is a browser plug in and it can be run against ANY web page. photos dont need to be manually uploaded like with riya
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah but facebook version isn't smart. its just tagging.
- Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You'd never have to question whether people remember Riya if it done the best job it could. Think of Google, it's up there because it's the best service going. If Riya couldn't be bettered it would be remembered. I say give Polar Rose a chance - from first appearences I think I'd prefer to use it over Riya.

"Philip K. Dick Robot
It was capable of recognizing several of Dick's"
Tehehehe. - zlyoga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3be nice if they actually had a usuable product before getting dugg
- terrab0t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3More importantly, if you didn't want yourself indexed by the service you could tag lots of your own photos with other names and other photos with yours. Even if the site doesn't have an opt-out feature, you can still protect your own privacy.
Of course, just like having an accurate wikipedia page on yourself, you have to both know about this particular site and go in and manually fix things yourself. This isn't the only site of it's kind, and there will probably be many more to come. As Tycho of Penny-Arcade.com said about wikipedia, you may have the ability to fix things yourself, but not everyone has time to babysit the internet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So let me get this straight... In order to use this website it needs photos that are pre-tagged?
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think I could resist attaching the names of all my friends to Goatse and Tubgirl.
- factoryjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Riya has changed strategy considerably since its original inception (and DEMO God award) last fall:
http://munjal.typepad.com/recognizing_deven/2006/07/riya_20_roadmap.html
It's no longer focusing only on face recognition, as Polar Rose is... instead, Riya aims to become the "Google of imagesearch"... generally -- including object search, color search, pattern matching and the rest. In fact, face rec has become something of a secondary feature in the current release of Riya. - Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sometimes I can barely recognize people I know in pictures because of the angles... one picture of someone can make them look totally different. I doubt a computer will be able to do much better.
- migla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Any bets on when the tech is good and large scale enough for Google to buy these guys out?
- DeadFly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If someone had the vast computing power to make this work as a facial recognition system, a service could let people search for free, but charge people to have their embarassing photos hidden.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1 -digg down :(
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Creepy and Cool.
- kulpreetsingh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2So people could tag pictures of GW Bush with ... "This is Snoop Dogg" and Donald Rumsfeld with "This is Jessica Simpson"? :)
- joerao, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This isn't anything new. Remember Riya? http://www.riya.com
- thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2isnt this exactly what Riya does? there was an episode of Inside the Net whis a developer for them. this is nothing new.
- TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Facebook has had a similar system for awhile as well. Highlight, tag, save.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3The ultimate test i think would be trying it out on one of those "Wheres Wally?" books.
- Foxphoto, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1sounds like some bull ***** of of CSI
