- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -9/+93o well, its cool and havnt heard about it yet
- Nerys, on 10/12/2007, -11/+65I will not touch vista until it is fully 100% cracked and neutered (IE no contact with microsoft) I do not recognize activation or phoning home as legal.
I have 6 machines running XP Pro Corporate. Now before you get your panties in a knot I have 6 legally purchased copies of XP Pro in my safe. Still in the shrinkwrap where they will stay.
I believe in buying software I just do not recognize there legal right to mandate "activation" schemes.
The software I buy is my property. I do not recognize "license" or "terms" or "EULA's" in so far as legal personal use is concerned.
Activation strips me of my property rights by making the use of my property dependent on the existence and will of microsoft. This should not be legal.
This would be no different than your car "dialing into" the dealership to see if its legit and not starting if it fails. OR worse not starting cause you put unapproved gas in it or installed an after market component etc..
Plus I don't see anything in vista that I need. I never install windows updates. its the first thing I disable. (I do install service packs)
I never get viruses I never get spyware trojans etc.. some basic know how security and my brain are enough.
Natting - software firewall on each machine - training on what the do's and don't s are and not using bad software (Internet Explorer for example)
I HATE it when software updates itself. infuriating. first thing I do with any program is disable auto updates and ban from any network access any program that does not have a valid need for network access. - jonathantneal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+53I'm glad it's a dupe, because I didn't see the others, and then I would have missed out on this 1337 news!
- neftaly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+48Well, this post is different in both the fact that it mentions the RTM release AND the fact that it has a crack. It's like a news slash warez slash hax0r mashup, which I've been lead to believe is all the rage these days!
Dugg, because the magic of Web 2.0 "mashups" will apparently help me to score hot chicks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40"they are trying to use more aggressive tactics to punish amateur pirates"
I'm SO glad I'm not an amateur pirate... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Yeah, I was running a copy of windows XP pro at home while I was attending the Microsoft Windows XP launch...
- Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32i believe devilsown cracked xp before xp was even released.
- michaelg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Promantarius: You are mistaken, sir. Linux is open source and a huge target for virus writers because it is the dominant server platform. Linux is just a solid system and being open source has only made it stronger in the long run and more flexible as it is being adapted to so many devices.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Try Office... and most of their revenue comes from business sales not home sales.
If Dell, HP, Gateway, Lenovo, and anyone else who makes home PCs suddenly started offering only Linux machines then that's what 99% of the world would get. - kristopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26How long until someone makes a virus which sole purpose is to set off Vista's pirate detection so that copy of Vista is disabled? Package it as a worm and you'd have insane feedback from regular users about how bad the Vista detection has become.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Download it and try it before spreading mis-information. The activation mech only is required to "check in" every 180 days after sucessful activation.
You are right that it uses the RC2 activation binaries, however, you are wrong that it doesn't activate. It activates just fine. It turns the RTM into a 8 month demo. If you choose not to update, and you have it activatd, you hve 180 days until it needs to "phone home" again.
You have five install choices:
1). install with a VALID key and get 3 days (you won't be able to activate of course)
2). install with NO key whatso ever, and you get 30 days
3). install with NO key whatsoever , and you get 30 days, but you can apply the activation components of RC2 and get a working, activated, trial that will expire summer of 2007.
4). wait until Jan 30 and buy it
5). buy the corp version - manageMyRights, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22EULAs are on dubious legal ground at best. They are certainly not considered the same as signing on the dotted line. They are presented AFTER purchasing the product when you can't return the software because you opened the package.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25there's a problem with the pirated build: it was nuked. TheHotfix.net offset one BIT. They flipped a single ***** bit!
Thus, nuked, but only partially. The busted bit landed in a driver stored in the WIM file. Some people will see a corrupt ISO as a result, whereas others will install fine......
Heh. It's still nuked. - ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22here's what you guys can do for Vista until a crack that actually works
is done, you can reset activation 3 times, meanig 4*30=120Days use of
vista just use in start->run rundll32 slc.dll,SLReArmWindows its not a
complete workaround but it does mean things will stay legit since there's
no crack.
you can use either that command or this from cmd,
cscript windowssystem32slmgr.vbs -rearm , should make no diff.
dont forget to do it every 29 days. - tomi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19...because we've downloaded it and tried it.
Works as advertised. - FuzionMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20people in MSDN have it I think.
- vulcanius, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22All of that is fine and dandy except for the fact that you already agreed to their licensing by installing Windows.
- TimTim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+181). 3 days trial.
2). 30 days trial.
3). 6 month trial.
So Vista is trialware? Has Microsoft turned into a shareware company? - DDoSAttack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17@mrASSMAN
No it's not... MS Office is - csshyamsundar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16RTM is not cracked! They have just released an hack which would make ur Vista run up to 2007 May.
Crack is expected to be released by end of this month. - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I'm sure that this hack won't work for very long. It should be very easy for Microsoft to stop it as the article says.
- jls777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Did I understand this correctly, you need Internet access to activate the store bought computer with vista, and also need to stay on-line just to have it keep working?
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I'm sure others are thinking the same thing. - vulcanius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Was this before or after you found out the aliens abducted and probed you?
- paralleljay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Do you hear that?
That's the sound of everyone being shocked by such news.
No I don't hear anything either. - ejdmoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17"The activation crack is a separate download, and works by replacing the licensing components with components from beta builds. Then using a product key from Beta 1, Beta 2, RC1 or RC2, the Gold version of Vista can be activated online.
In this sense, it’s not a true crack – it’s simply leveraging off compatibilities between the betas and the Gold release. Vista still needs to be activated, and it looks like for the moment, there’s no way around that."
Marked as inaccurate. This will be turned off once the Beta keys are no good when the testing period ends. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15maybe you should've posted it then instead of asking for it? :-)
- 1111, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21@mrASSMAN
Are YOU ***** stupid? Office used to generate more revenue than Windows and it is only in the last few years that Windows has started to generate more. In no way does Windows constitute the "nearly all" of Microsoft's revenue. Once again, how much can be expected from a high school student who spends all day on the "girl talk live" forums of the tom green website. Maybe you should do some research before you assume your presumptions are correct. - thushan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12MSDN Subscribers will get it sometime this week.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Actually if you look at their big 3 divisions Client, Servers, and Business. Clients (windows) and Business (office) are neck and neck in term of revenue and net profit. So to say that one is their "Main source of income." is just wrong and ignorant. I'm looking at their earning right now for 4Th quarter of 05 and Windows pull in 2.6 billion net income and Office pull in 2.25 billion.
- bowels, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14joe90210, I've got some bridges for sale that I will give you a great deal on.
- Grayfox777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"Case in point: The law is preventing my right as an American to eat unborn babies, so I will eat them anyway. Does that mean that I now have a right to eat them? No!"
Yeah... like that's really a fair comparison.... - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Has an EULA even been tested in a court of law? (I myself don't know.) Imagine if EULAs were applied to any common item you purchase -- things like cars, your house, tools, etc.. Who gave software makers the authority to impose such contracts like this?

If the major retailers were selling linux, the world would come to an end. - timdafweak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Finished installing Vista Ultimate through my VKLS. First impressions really blew me over. I had installed Vista back in the RC1 days, and was seriously disappointed with the lack of support for Hardware and how sluggish my system, but of course it was just an RC, not the final product.
Months later, I am back on the Vista Bandwagon, thanks to my company, and have it running on my system *no behemoth in terms of configuration* and I am impressed. Vista feels quick under operation, and most of my drivers from XP installed without a problem (my biggest concern). I still face a few problems at startup with the Logitech Setpoint Software always wanting to call home (haven't found a way to disable that), but other than that, it feels quick and quite slick.
Installed Microsoft Office 2007 as well, and it does seem that these two were built for each other. However out of place the Office Suite (not to mention Messenger Live! and WMP 11) looked in XP, they fit right in the UI look and feel of Vista. Full marks to the Microsoft for that.
However, I am afraid that once the novelty of Using Vista wears off, I won't see it as that different from XP in terms of changes in the OS. I know one will throw up comments like rewritten TCP stack, and other changes under the hood, but I must say, apart from the eye candy, and a couple of features which make operating easier in Vista than in XP, I really don't see much of a difference. That being said, I still love it.
And oh, did I tell ya, I have already faced Two BSODs. Damn I had thought they went out with XP SP1! But in all fairness they did occur while I was forcing Creative Audigy drivers (beta) to install. We need final versions of the Drivers here!
Just a random bunch of thoughts! - mbiesz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Uhm. Microsoft released the RTM build so that Vista could be... RTM'd.
- l0gden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11nope msdn doesn't have it yet -- just rc2
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Hoorah for you. I use a similar scheme (sp2 ftw).
Just don't EVER let a noob IE user touch those machines. - Tixer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13If anyone has a Microsoft Sign counting down the launch, and wants to give me directions to it, I don't mind holding my new CD up to it, with the serial number....
Pwnt - omegadan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Quick Survey:
How many people would buy a copy of vista if the price wasn't 200+ like I'm expecting? $80 seems like the sweet spot for an OS. I'd like a legit copy but MS stuff is just too expensive. And it has to be a "real" version. Not crippled, not a "home" version thats missing 1 critical thing. - timelf123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11probably scared of MS suing em if they post it... plus its all over the torrent sites if you just look for 5 seconds
- cryptoknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I am pretty sure you can do this now with anyone who has WGA installed. The registry key
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionDigitalProductID is where your cd key is stored and thats what wga checks when it phones home. So in theory if you overwite this with something bad (fake key) then poof windows goes bye bye? Anyways for refrence here is a nice .net example on how to get the key and manipulate it.
http://planet-source-code.com/vb/scripts/ShowCode.asp?txtCodeId=4834&lngWId=10 - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9So let me get this straight.
They figured out how to copy the RC activation binaries over the RTM activation binaries. That is hardly 'cracked'. What are they going to do in Feb when the RC activation codes are all disabled?
Maybe I am a bit harsh on what I call a crack, but to me cracked means that they have figured out a keygen or some way of bypassing the activation process. It does surprise me that MS did not use some technique of making sure the RC and RTM activation binaries are not compatible, but I don't call this cracked in the usual sense of the word. - wthnow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You also selling the Eiffel tower?
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hahaha the real question is can anyone use it yet? Hardware vendors haven't released enough drivers for this to be useful for everyone yet. I being a techy however will have to install and play with this... until I can get a licensed copy that is.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Then pay for the heap of crap, or use something better and free.
The sooner Microsoft can actually enforce restrictions *effectively* on home users who won't pay for their OS, the sooner Microsoft "windows" dies, or at least takes huge losses in market share.
It's a toss up between being "seen to protect their interests", and "not shooting themselves in the foot".
The only trouble is that, as evidenced by their backdown on XP, Microsoft knows that as well as we do.
Also, it's a much-tested PR habit of Microsoft's to release scary teasers about how a new OS release won't work with this or that, or contains big brother feature X, but not include them on release day (sometimes opting for things that are bad but not that bad).
From Microsoft's standpoint, a lot of the paying customers they want to make money from are business clients who they can actually squeeze. In that sense, propagation and ubiquity elsewhere are still propagation and ubiquity. - guttertrash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10i love pirates. they are so cool.
ARRRRRR matey - Rapax, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16Pay? For software? Sorry mate, not me. That's like paying for air.
- EasY_TargeT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9once people in MSDN have it then so does http://www.thehotfix.net
- Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"In this sense, it’s not a true crack – it’s simply leveraging off compatibilities between the betas and the Gold release. Vista still needs to be activated, and it looks like for the moment, there’s no way around that."
