- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+58Summary of the article: Vista upgrade installation performs just as well as a clean installation. XP performance beats both.
- Philodox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45Why would they open source the OS and charge for support when they can charge for the OS and charge for support (which is what they currently do).
- Civil44, on 10/12/2007, -9/+43@ dunezone
Theres some hookers outside my work right now ill split it 10/10 with ya. - LordofShadows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Vista Performance (next page) shoot out (next page) Upgrade Vs. (next page) Clean Installation (next page)
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"Summary of the article: Vista upgrade installation performs just as well as a clean installation. XP performance beats both."
Which is exactly what we all expect until a few driver patches have been released. The initial XP 3D Mark scores didn't exactly blow win9x out of the water. - dw2005, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Hopefully this will shut up all those people who think that a Vista upgrade install will slow down your PC -- Vista upgrade != XP upgrade
It also makes buying the upgrade editions of Vista more enticing - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9best to head straight for the "print" link, clart!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9stop doing that will you
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10usability.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sucks huh? Try the print link... http://www.extremetech.com/print_article2/0,1217,a=200255,00.asp
(hopefully it doesn't use referrers) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All of those numbers are suspect since he writes "the motherboard manufacturer doesn't offer Vista chipset drivers". You wouldn't run any motherboard for high performance comparisons without proper chipset drivers. Some can function in a limited capacity without them, some not at all properly.
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't recall having to pay Microsoft for XP service packs myself.
- LocDawg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This is a joke. There is absolutely no merit to this "experiment" at all. They should have used identical hardware, over a clean install of xp. Their data set is useless. I wouldn't trust this website.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I heard it was scrapped completely.
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ya, WinFS is dead as a duck.
- thtroyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ugh. Too many pages.
- stockjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll see what you say about that in several months after driver updates, the first service pack and Crysis.
- tarmithius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4then use this: http://www.extremetech.com/print_article2/0,1217,a=200255,00.asp
- pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hello...DirectX10?...not made for gaming?
Not ready for gaming would be more accurate. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"And on that note, has anyone run a Win9x 3DMark test recently to compare that to XP?"
Lol, I tried that about 3 years back and my poor Voodoo2 card couldn't even run the demo. I seriously doubt you will find a video card new enough to run a recent 3dmark which comes with 9x drivers.
When XP first came out, the scores were unimpressive. The drivers are rushed to market in time for release, and can take 6 months to settle. This is always the cost of being an early adopter. - LocDawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's one horny cat man!
- TheAcclaimed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is awesome. I have a free upgrade that I was worried about using but since the performance is practically the same I mind as well install it.
- Maaarrrk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My kids are addicted to msft software so I put Vista on two PC's. One a Dell with a Centrino 1.6 ghz as an upgrade. The upgrade took untold hours (let it run overnight). Some features like the touchpad do not work right anymore. The most annoying is the wireless hardware and the Vista OneCare firewall get tangled up so bad NOTHING gets through the firewall. I HAVE to run that machine with the OneCare firewall off (it is behind another type of firewall).
The other machine I degraded was a home built Athlon 64-bit 3200. It is a gamer computer with new hardware a 512 pci-x ati video, etc. The Vista upgrade failed completely. I ended up having to remove an older MSI PCTV card and Soundblaster Audiology and even redo the cables going to the two harddrives and two optical drives. After the hardware changes I finally got a Vista clean install to work.
Very, VERY annoying is that I could not by a 64-bit version of Vista at a store. I had to install a 32-bit version on the 64-bit athlon. You have to go to a msft website and pay $10 more to have them SHIP you a 64-bit version of Vista. I did that a several days ago and still have not seen the software.
An the plus side, Vista is faster than XP. The graphics appear better on both computers. The gamer one has really nice graphics with Vista. Windows Mail appears better than the old Outlook. A little bit of the look and feel is different but not hard to figure out if you mess with different types of computers.
On the negative side, besides a terrible install:
1. Forget about support. You get off-shored support people who know NOTHING. If it is not on there little list of items they completely freak out. Gates has enough money to hire North Americans, DO IT BILL. There are lots of Katrina victims that would do a much better job and would probably be cheaper with nice tax break.
2. Vista is very very picky about hardware. I think they are trying to force Windows users to buy new machines.
In summary, will I convert my personal 64-bit Ubuntu linux machine to Vista. NO WAY!!!
If you want to do office or online work, just go with ubuntu or some other linux flavor - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If you're really pushing your computers performance in gaming or media creation it may very well not be worth it to you at this point to upgrade. The performance decreases we're currently seeing aren't likely to slow the average computer user down more than a few seconds a day though--if they can find their document quicker or figure out what they need to do faster they're going to come out ahead. I find that the search functionality alone saves me a couple minutes a day on average. I've tried the search applications from Yahoo, Google, and Microsoft for XP and was never impressed.
I haven't noticed any slowdowns at all, but I did put it on a brand new Core 2 Duo machine. I'll be testing on older hardware soon so we'll see how that goes. - ninjathis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A little off subject
But does any one know when WinFS is going to be offered for vista?
Or is it going to be offered for vista anymore?
I haven't heard or read a thing about it. - GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5My system is more responsive with Vista than it is with XP. You could go on thinking I'm lying, an idiot, incompetent, whatever, and digg me down, but you'll come around soon enough. People always do. People also thought Windows 2000 was faster than XP.
- rtini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Vista is so awesome. It's only a little bit slower than Windows XP.
- monkeyflingpoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Question ---- When upgrading from XP and the original system is invalidated, can you then clean install after formatting your computer?
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oops, what did that 0 with a line through it next to cofa's name do?
I can't seem to find his useful comment anymore. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"i cant wait till everyone gets vista installed, and starts to realise just how much more restrictive their operating system is."
I've been testing Vista for months and I have yet to find anything I can't do that I could do on XP. All the complaints about DRM are a bunch of hot air. - WaldoX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4vista is not made for gaming... the site shows vista is 10% slower framerates then xp... thats like a video card or cpu downgrade for some folks
- stockjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Always go clean. Especially with all the crapware half of you have installed on your current box.
- Speed, on 10/12/2007, -12/+13Maybe I;m an oddity, but for me preformance has gone up since switching to Vista.
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can always do the trick that was posted in Digg a few days ago to get a clean install with an upgrade cd ;-)
- MrPlug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wow, I have always been pro format and install, im just unsure about this vista thing, drivers are screwy, games dont run the same, man i just dont know and i bought it..... really i did, why do i feel so empty?
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And on that note, has anyone run a Win9x 3DMark test recently to compare that to XP?
- Maaarrrk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another positive thing is that OneCare for Vista has an option to back up to a network drive. That works well for me since I like to back up to a stable linux box ;-)
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yep, the world didn't stop between the DVDs being stamped in December and February.
- fearlessfrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, that would be a really good marketing line, certainly worth the $5 billion dev cost plus $500m is launch marketing...
"Vista is so awesome, It's only a little bt slower than Window XP!'
:-) - GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Microsoft included basic chipset drivers for all the big names out there, but they over rudimentary performance and will *probably* not work as well as the manufacturers' drivers when proper sets are released.
- JonGalt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hate it when i accidently give someone the thumbs up. I did that to you llbbl. And now im pist off at myself.
Microsoft = owns you - seanthebond, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Yeah, or at least spam us with good photos and pr0n.
Like common, this is the lamest photoshoped picture I have ever seen.
http://www.eefoof.com/image/28405 - ferric84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0[editing comment] - posted in wrong thread.
- HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"the only changes we made to the new OS were updating it with all of the latest patches, downloading and installing sound card and graphics drivers"
Patches plural? Already? Sorry but that's pathetic. - demonmrdr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1i have tested the crap out of vista (paid to do so) and of course it is slow, to get the performance that microsoft promises you need a really high end computer that not only empties your bank account and would have very little use of. All vista is, is XP with a few more desktop features, and a few security features. there are more user security features, but all they do is cause popups that bug you every time you open a window. all in all, do go out and upgrade to vista, keep Xp, because there will be tonnes of compatibility issues with vista and current programs.
- guttertrash, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3oh man. i cant wait till everyone gets vista installed, and starts to realise just how much more restrictive their operating system is. and no, winfs isnt coming any time soon, they couldnt get it out so it probably wont be available untill service pack 2 or even a totally new release, knowing microsoft it will probably end up being a paid upgrade
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1That website is not credited at all!
- Tourney3p0, on 10/12/2007, -21/+10It seems pretty clear that in terms of performance, XP is far superior. I can't think of a good reason why anyone would choose to use Vista.
