- AlmostEvil, on 10/12/2007, -12/+51Microsoft are trying to do an IE here to VMWare.
The only drawback to that is that VMWare isn't like Netscape in that their VM is crap in comparison, VMWare is YEARS ahead of MS Virtual PC on both the desktop and most significantly on the server.
I wonder what VMWare will do next though, they have their free VMWare player already out. If I were them i'd just release Workstation for free or a slightly less capable version of it for free. (like limited to virtual machines with a single processor)
Either way, this competition between the two is good for us. Free VM software! - stanthegoomba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+40Snarfy: Parallels only runs on Intel Macs. VPC is the only option for most Mac users.
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36So you can run...another copy of Windows for software testing...Perhaps a server version of Windows if you are studying for tests...Run Linux. There are a lot of possibilities.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32Q is *not* way faster because Q completely emulates the PC. Every instruction is converted while VPC uses as many hooks into OS X as possible, making it much faster.
XP installed within an hour for me with VPC, & took 3-4 hours for Q. - Splizxer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23To test out viruses and stuff, download porn.exe and see if its really a movie?
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I've used MS Virtual PC for a pretty good range of smallscale implementations and I, for one, LOVE it! I've set up MSDOS6, Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000 Pro, 2003 Server, and even Slackware virtual boxes and they all worked swimmingly. I was especially impressed at the 98 box since it performed so well with Windows and DOS gaming, even with standardized DOS VESA drivers.
I'm ecstatic that MS put this out. I can't recommend an easier out-of-the-box virtual server retro DOS gaming platform than Virtual PC (and that includes DOSBOX). - brainzelda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Web designers use it to test older browser versions compatible on older OSes. Things of that nature.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -15/+33Any one know if the Mac version is free?
- Snarfy, on 10/12/2007, -29/+46I post a constructive comment and get -2. I don't get it. A comment talks about how Microsoft is trying to do an IE/Netscape thing to VMWare. It gets +13. Isn't that completely obvious?!? Sometimes digg ratings suck
- cfsporn, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26Pardon my stupidity, but why do you need virtual PC on windows?
- anphanax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Splizxer - porn.exe is never a movie...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18great for learning or teaching and testing, you can totally trash a virtual os. And just reload the image and all is fine. I have one comp with most ms os's on it to keep me fresh on some of the older crap. I've purpose infected with virii to try to remove or see what they do. I have let one unpatched system on the net to watch it get infected.
There is some movement in the biz market to use virtual windows for safety and from quick restore.
there are even virtual browsers(too slow for my taste)
vmware is indespecible for me. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -23/+37I have a PowerBook G4 so sadly it won't work.
- Jerph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Two disagreements with this thread:
It's not "pulling an IE" until they preinstall it in the OS (confirmed for Vista?).
and
Linux works fine on VPC, but it doesn't have the same host OS extensions for linux as it does for Windows. VMWare does, by the way. - bradleyjx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17There's also the need sometimes to run Windows 95 or an older version of Windows for antiquated programs that aren't around anymore, but still needed.
- sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -22/+35yeah, i've noticed that people don't digg comments up or down based on truthfulness, instead based on whether or not they THINK you are bashing OS X or Linux (MS is fair game though).
that and they just like digging people down
for the record, i dugg you up. - cubeeggs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14To clear things up: Q is a front end for QEMU (an open source emulator) for PPC Macs. Virtual PC on the Mac is also an emulator, but the Windows version is a virtualizer.
- AndyVenus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The last edition of MS office is older.
- cwl157, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15well you can get the vmware server for free and it works well even though its beta. I did read that it is supposed to still be free after the beta too.
- natmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'm all for free things.
- Jellybob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15It can be useful to run multiple operating systems on a server, each running for a different purpose.
- cwalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11lol, I guess all copies of VPC 2004 on eBay are now worthless. The funny part is, I bet most buyers don't even know.
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=Virtual+PC+2004 - TruckStuff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Checkout http://www.easyvmx.com. It allows you to create a VM with any options you want that can then be played in WMWare Player. That gives you a blank PC from which you can install virtually any OS you want.
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Here is what I do with virtual server (which is the 'server' version of virtual pc). Over the years I have aquired 4 copies of NT server 4.0 about 25 cals, a copy of terminal server, exchange server, windows 2000 & sharepoint team server.. So I installed XP on the base computer, virtual server & virtual pc. I then used virtual pc to interactivly build an OpenBSD firewall, a domain controller, file server, web server, exchange server and a terminal server. Then I used Virtual server to host all of these VM's on the same box. So now I can run a 'complex server enviroment' all on a single computer! And its a heck of a lot better than the old days of trying to run 10+ app servers on one server, since each server application is on its own VM. Its like that SBS but waaaay better!
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Dont forget about qemu! For those of us that have different cpu computers, with qemu you can take your images to run on sparc solaris, intel solaris, ppc os x, intel os x & windows!
Best of all its free! - scards, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Could Microsoft be anticipating compatibility issues with running Windows 98/2000/XP programs on their new Vista structure? Sounds a little like an up to date modern version of MSDOS SHELL. Maybe I'm being skeptical, but I can't really think Microsoft would give something away for free with no reason other than "we want to give something back to the people."
Still, free is better than not free I suppose. - complex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is pretty cool. I'm playing with it now and it is quite amazing what they can fit into only 18MB.
Warning: The installer does not require a reboot, but it will reset all of your network connections. I had to reconnect ~10 SSH sessions. :( - ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Officially, yes. But it installs and runs just fine on XP Home. I've used it that way for years, including running SuSE Linux 10.
- concept03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9If you like it and you think it is a great piece of software, then BUY it. I also think VMware is a great product, and I have a legal copy of it. I think it's important to support the work of developers and companies that are creating useful and creative products.
- chilifries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7ars technica compares vmware and virtual pc:
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/apps/vm.ars - Dakk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The number one reason that I could see it being used is for backwards compatibility and allowing Microsoft to cut some bloated legacy support out of Vista/Others. Say your company has a legacy software package that refuses to run on anything later than NT. You could run the package on a virtualized copy of NT inside XP, etc...
- slapout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"It doesn't run on XP Home, though, so some will still have to pony up an extra $100 just to use it."
I don't know about the full version, but the demo runs on XP Home. It gives a warning about not being designed for XP Home, but it still runs fine anyway. - usefulidiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I just bought a new dual core laptop, and vmware is the perfect solution for my web development. I have a virtual copy of windows server 2003 web edition with 1 domain plesk licence(free) running on vmware. With a gig of ram, this runs great on my laptop. When I am not doing web development, I do not want to have ***** of other sevices running and slowing my pc down, so the beauty of vmware is that I can run server apps only when I need them, quickly and efficiently without having to fiddle with starting and stopping services. Not to mention, the disk image of the server, I can move it from computer to computer without having to worry about the servers configuration changing. Only complaint with vmware is there is no minimize to tray, so I use IconicTray to minimize it to the taskbar(middle click on minimize button).
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I use it for testing older versions of Windows and IE as well as Linux.
- Snarfy, on 10/12/2007, -57/+64On Macs what you want is called Parallels Desktop http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Retro gaming! Virtual PC runs DOS games much more accurately than DOSbox!
And it's not a stupid question at all, by the way. Only uber nerds have much use for this software. - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5R2 isn't Release Candidate 2. R2 is the second release.
- concept03, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12I agree, competition in this area only benefits the consumer. That is, as long as it remains competitive and the market isn't reduced to a single company...
- bradk50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5VMWARE already released the server for free. What was GSX is now free. MS vs has been free for a while, the only new thing is workstation but with ms vm products theres isnt a heck of lot of difference between workstation and server, at least no like vmwares workstation and server products.
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Virtual Server will not install on XP Home. Virtual PC claims it's not supported on XP Home, but it will install and works great.
- BuddhaChu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4VMware's free Server version was mentioned above, but no link. Here ya go:
http://www.vmware.com/products/server/ - MyNameIsNotBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@cwl157
AFAIK, VMware Server is out of beta now and still free. It's currently at version 1.0, with no mention of beta..... - CosmicJustice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Maybe I'm being skeptical, but I can't really think Microsoft would give something away for free with no reason other than "we want to give something back to the people.""
Internet Explorer
Windows Media Player
Windows Media Encoder
SQL Server Express
Visual Studio Express (multiple flavors)
the dotNet framework
Embedded Visual C++
Embedded VB
No, I can't image them giving something away. Not much. - CamperBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you give Grandma and Grandpa a virtual Windows XP installation instead of a real one, it's WAY easier to clean malware off their machine when needed. Just back up their (probably nonexistent) My Documents folder and refresh their virtual PC image. Three minutes to a brand-new OS installation, instead of three hours. And the virtual-PC image can be copied or moved between physical machines, as well.
Virtualization is a huge deal, and not just (as spyrochaete suggests) for power users. If anything, it's even more beneficial to novice/casual users, who no longer have to be afraid of "messing up" their PC. I suspect everybody *but* the most hardcore of power users will be running virtual machines in a few years. Running "on the metal" will be thought of the same way as running as root today. - mrfunktastic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7indespecible is my new favorite word
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That site was just a stupid blog and more about news than education. If you want to educate people about virtualization, go to a place like this:
http://www.kernelthread.com/publications/virtualization/
I personally doubt you weren't affiliated with that site... Or you just picked a quite lousy example. ;-) - GloverCom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Indeed... Yeah, but you can't go by the year. I think it came out last month. :)
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The LiveCD is a much better idea. Virtual PC emulates some very standard old hardware. The LiveCD will test your real hardware. Drivers are a big issue (for me) in Linux so the LiveCD will give you an idea of how many man pages you'll be reading.
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Virtual server is free, but needs XP pro or 2003 server. (IIS is its main hangup for xp home users)
- kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think everyone's missed the point that, though VPC is free, the OS you run inside it is NOT. You need a separate license for everything that you run VPCs of. So if you run a virtual instance of XP for testing software out etc, and your host OS is XP, you need *two* licences for XP to be properly legal. If you run two virtual XP machines at the same time on an XP host, you need *three* XP licences. So it is not that surprising that MS are giving this away free - not only do they put pressure on VMWare, but they also up their license base on XP ... more $$$.
I imagine that people playing at home or studying for their MCSE etc can get away with using trial edition licences in the virtual instances, but folks like web developers and software testers at work should not be doing that. Lots of $$$ for MS.
Of course if you run a virtual linux instance on top of your XP host, you only need the one XP licence for the underlying host. -
