- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I love Parallels Desktop for Mac!
I daresay that the introduction of Intel macs in 2006 will mean this figure will go up more next year as well with people running VMWare or Parallels on Intel Macs. - neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Indeed using ESX server I have taken 30 production servers, and consolodated them to 4 servers & one FC disk array. The best part is since the 4 servers are top of the line, all of the VM's benifit from this. Our MSSQL 7 server that was on a PII that had jobs that would complete in 1-2 hours now run in under 5 minutes on the Opterons....
As long as you leave the base machines alone, its all good. - sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This articles talks strictly on the SERVER side, not DESKSIDE! Yes, emulation has different flavors but a distincation should be made when making a comparission. The reason why virtualization is important is it allows resources to be bundelled in pools (i.e. Memory, Hard-Drive, Network Cards, SAN...etc.) and shared along multiple operating system iterations (NT, W2K, W2K3...) ~ so the only way to realize 67% virtualization needs to be at a bigger scale, in this case it's for companies who employ these servers to increase productivity, reduce down-time associated with troubleshooting/setup, and eliminating essentially cost in supporting multiple hardware. The key goal again is using the hardware fully and eliminating COSTS!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the article title should be "grub causes virtual machine growth" haha i hate grub
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The really cool thing for servers is migrating a virtual machine to another server in order to do online upgrades of the processor, replace a fan, etc. And it is done for free with Xen. That is mind blowing.. migrate your database server to another machine, upgrade the old machine, then switch it back. Wow.
- pilgrim3970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NIce to see that the PC is finally catching on to what systems like the AS/400 has been doing for a loooong time.
It will be interesting to see how this affects the PC hardware market. - neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the hardware for doing VM's in the pc world has only been around since the 386 in what? 1986?
Im sure you never used DesqView,Concurrent DOS/386, or Windows/386? Im not even going to go on about OS/2 2.0!
Its that old thing 'everything old is new again' but then I'll have to say the virtualizers are definatly better now then the 'clone & copy' virtualizers of then. Although OS/2 started down the independant road, but by then the closed nature of windows had started to kill OS/2's fixation on integrating vs virtualization. - sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's way too expensive!
- esc27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lots of things are working in virtualization's favor.
Growth in use of the free VMWare player (I think it was released late last year.)
Free server products from both Microsoft and VMWare.
Virtual PC is now free.
New Intel chips designed to improve virtualization.
VMWare's ESX server suite had a major 3.0 release.
Many companies are entering the market with their own technologies, or at least are becoming more well known (Parallels, Xen, etc.)
The big vendors (such as VMWare) partnering with companies such as Dell and IBM to sell blade servers with their virtualization software.
etc. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I pay $10/mo for one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah ESX server rocks. We've got about 4 VM's running on a Dell 2850 right now, and we count on all of them daily and they never fail us. ESX is rock-solid and a great way to efficiently use resources. When we need a new server, we buy some ram and upgrade the ESX box, then add another virtual machine. Eventually we'll hit the ceiling but oh well, since the entire VM is a file on the hard drive, we just transfer it to a beefier box and fire it up. You can actually use some VMWare stuff to move *running* virtual machines between servers. That's incredible.
- chadu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We are deploying virtual machines like crazy around here. Virtually every developer has one if not two or more. Workstations, server, etc... just makes $ense.
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How much of that increase is due to a Mac resurgence and a desire for those converts to run Windows?
- rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but lilo's dead... not much of a choice there...
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3A Virtual Private Server really is the way to go if you want cheap hosting. Much nicer than a regular shared hosting environment.
- kareejb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My company curently has 5 opteron boxes (soon to be 7) running ESX with over 50VM's. We no longer have any test or dev servers that are physical machines. Our aging database servers that handle our 1600+ retail locations are now VM's as well. All new server requests are now automatically VM's unless someone can give a valid business case for needing a dedicated server. ESX is now definately the way to go.
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No boot camp is not a virtual machine, windows runs natively on the hardware. Boot camp merely repartitions your hard drive, and burns a CD with the needed Windows drivers for your machine.
Parallels Desktop is the only way to run Windows in a virtual machine on Mac OS X, until VMWare comes out with their line of software.
Also, no wonder more people are using VMs, both Virtual PC and VMWare Server are free! I recommend VMWare server, it's just as good as the workstation version, but better! (and free) - DavidDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hold on. "Virtualization" is not the same thing as "Virtual Machine." The JVM is a virtual machine, and VMWare is a virtual machine too, but it is more often called a "virtualization solution" since it creates a virtual server. This virtual server technology is a subcategory of virtual machines.
- fuzzytexan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0VMWare Server is good but does lack two of the best features of Workstation - Multiple Snapshots and Cloning. That in itself is enough to encourage me to buy Workstation (or the even better ESX 3 if you're lucky enough to get to use it at work). But yeah if you're set on free VMWare Server is good.
- brilliant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Watch this video and you will feel that it aint so bad afterall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qWXNF75n8o
>sheesh! I really need to pay closer attention to my grammar! - sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Certain companies like Dell designs speciall servers dedicated to run VMWare and such, since the hardware drivers need to be compatible!
- pilgrim3970, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"NIce to see that the PC is finally catching on to what systems like the AS/400 has been doing for a loooong time."
sheesh! I really need to pay closer attention to my grammar! - Rigbymatt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1But apple only has 2% of the market!!
will have an impact though, i know plenty of people who have switched just so they could dual boot.
Does boot camp count as a Virtual machine? I highly doubt it. - LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3I
