- oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18When something isn't scripted it is only human nature to say umm. That's because silence is a more uncomfortable tone. When you don't know where to go next, you simply try to fill the space with noise.
- oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Here's the link to that actual screen cast.
http://www.2old2play.com/modules.php?name=Lan - clinko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8These searchjerk guys are going all out on their spamming. I've seen them on engadget, TVSquad and now digg.
The sad part is this is CSS, and even though the digg comment system buries the link, it still shows up on search engines. So searchjerk's link is just as good as a legit comment's follow-up link.
Congratulations searchjerk, you're living up to your name. - doodirock2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I also pretty sure the guy captured the thing at 4am. That cant really help your sense of direction either.
- rumurphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i think he did a pretty damn good job... pretty hypercritical for someone doing you a favor
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8If you go to the Netflix site, they say they will be releasing a Mac version eventually. Be patient.
I don't understand you Mac fanboys. You gloat about your uniqueness, but then you complain when someone releases a windows only app. - KingDrewsky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Then watch the nightly news instead of someone who is bringing you info on their spare time.
- LordStandley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The service is very nice actually. I have watched about 6 movies so far and had 5 of them started within 10 or 15 seconds of hitting play. One queued up for about 10 minutes and then played through perfect. The quality even at the basic setting is very watchable. I even had it running through my HTPC and it was great. The one problem so far is that foreign and some other movies do not have subtitles. I watched a movie last night with a french guy talking for about two minutes and had no idea what he was saying.
- Deman267, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nice review,cool service!
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Supporting the 0.5% of users on Opera will be the key to their success, mhmm.
- debtman7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't know if it's even possible, but it'd be awesome to get this working with the Wii browser. Easy streaming of movies right to my TV. Barring that, firefox support would also be a good start...
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You should actually keep track of real speakers. A lot of them say it more then you would think. Don't blame the dude that is trying to put out personal videos.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"NetFlix is probably trying to capture the demographic, and last I checked it's in the favor of the Microsoft operating system."
Agreed, I used it for the first time last week and noticed that it uses Windows Media Player for the DRM authorization. I'm sure that's why it is IE7 and Windows only for now. Once they figure out a different DRM authorization method it probably won't take long for them to make it available in most browsers.
I also think they are throttling the bandwidth. The first review I read said that it graded a 6mb connection as medium (the guy in this screencast said the same thing). I have a 15/2 FiOS connection and it was also graded as medium. It didn't seem to affect the quality very much. The video looked great and whatever they are using for stream buffering is simply amazing. There is never a delay. It seems the service, which already looks great, only stands to improve. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeh, it needed quotes around Watch Now, like : Video Screen Cast of the new Netflix 'Watch Now' Beta ..to make it easier to read, but that's nitpicking..
Anyway, looks like an interesting service, is it available outside the US?
- Ben - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Will do.
- hackingnetflix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is very similar to a screencast I did on January 16th. It even uses Camtasia, the same software.
http://www.hackingnetflix.com/2007/01/demo_netflix_wa.html
What they don't mention is how to get early access to the Watch Now service. You can find that here:
http://www.hackingnetflix.com/2007/01/the_netflix_ins.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Call me when this works with a media center extender (aka My 360). Until then I'll stick with bit torrent and tversity.
- codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@SpacemanSpiff: Yea, most mac stuff tends to be released with the "version eventually" phrase. Let's face it, NetFlix is probably trying to capture the demographic, and last I checked it's in the favor of the Microsoft operating system. If you want to bring in interest and buzz you probably want to hit the big demographic first (also has a large pool of testers).
Once the service is stable it's only natural that they expand it out. Hitting firefox would be nice, but supporting opera would also be a good idea. I'm sure they already know that though :) - SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not in Beta any more. They are rolling it out to current Netflix subscribers in waves with the target of full member coverage by June. I've only been with Netflix for about a year and I gained access last week.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"...Let's face it, NetFlix is probably trying to capture the demographic..."
One could also argue that Apple users ARE the Netflix demographic...
Seeing as how it's the "cool" thing to be a part of these days... as opposed to the competition. - SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think they do. If you go to the help page on Netflix and search on Watch Now it will show you a page with information on it regarding the service. That same page eventually becomes your Watch Now link.
- m5wr1th, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone else think the title was a random smattering of words?
- |ant|, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yea, I really hate the no Firefox support aspect. I am going to have to dust off IE when this comes out.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beta testing is over tool. They're rolling it out to all of their customers now.
- Portwineboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I get the following message when I search Netflix for "download" or "watch now." I used IE6 to check...
"By June 2007, Netflix will enable instant movie watching for your account. When this feature is available you'll see a new "Watch Now" tab on your home page. We appreciate your interest!"
I've been a member since 1999! Wish they rolled this out on the basis of account age... - katzeye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you try it in IE? I'm not sure what their criteria are, but keep trying. It also worked for my Father and friends, so it wasn't just me.
- SickMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks cool but does anyone know if I will be able to stream this via my PC to my XBox to my TV?
- rockmyway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, everyone would like to buy a ferrari for the price of a toyota, but that's not the way it works, is it?
- iamhumble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thought it was well made. There is another DIGG story on how you can get into the beta. I tried it and now I'm a beta user.
Netflix rules. - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope, it's not couch-friendly.
- disk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm going to try later on with a clean profile (i.e. no extensions) and see if the same thing happens.
FYI I'm using Windows Vista, although I don't know if that could have anything to do with it. - disk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I tried with a clean profile but I had the same problem. I used Process Explorer's properties > performance to monitor the working set while I was watching the movie. The first minute or so it eats about 100 meg. Then at about 4m:30sec it starts eating again. At about 5:30 it crashed. Working set between 300-400. The times when it didn't crash it would start about that time to eat CPU and memory until about 6:30.
Basically what I've noticed is this: Any time there is movement in that flash presentation firefox starts eating memory like crazy. Right before it crashes, when it did, the window with the screen cast turns bright red and blocky. - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just watched it in FF and I got not problems. Thats odd.
- disk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just viewed the screencast in FF 1.5.0.9 with the latest flash installed... and firefox ate memory like crazy and crashed about 6 minutes in after eating 99% CPU for a minute. I cleared cache, everything, and then went back to the link, and sure enough firefox is eating tons of memory again. Working set was between 400-500 three times. Has anyone experienced anything similar when watching this screencast? I've never had this problem with any other flash content.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Assuming you mean the Xbox 360, if you have a Media Center Edition PC, you can install a browser-addon to MCE, and use it via the Xbox360.. Not got a Xbox 360 to test it, but I assume it basicly fowards the IE view to the Xbox, so it should work with Flash and such..
If it's a Xbox with XBMC, I'm sure there will be a way to watch it - But I'd guess there's nothing made to do it yet
- Ben - flamingjawa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"This is lame because it still only has B movies and non-new releases."
Last I checked it had at least two releases that were released on DVD this week.
It also seems like there are more available this week as opposed to last, which leads me to believe that netflix is rolling out the online versions at a pretty good clip. - Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hope someone will figure out how to hack the wii so you can stream things from your computer. I can currently watch videos from guba and you tube on there but sites like dailymotion simply keep loading forever.
Does anyone know if it might be possible to redirect the wii browser to your comps ip address and access the folders as though they were an ftp? - glozycom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0

http://nintendo.bootsgames.com - bytor4232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did that. I got an add saying it was "coming soon". This will indeed be a cool feature to add to my already great Netflix subscription!
- katzeye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you want in, search the word "Download" in Netflix. I'm not sure if this will work for everyone, but it worked for me.
- rinocom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1schweet, thanks. they notify you via email then?
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Frankie, try doing some research before you start throwing numbers around. The 'Watch Now' movies are in addition to the hard copy movies you receive in the mail. They don't charge you anything extra for the streaming movies, so those extra 8 movies are essentially a bonus.
Also, they've got plenty of good movies on there already: Untouchables, 12 Monkeys, Flight of the Phoenix (the original), etc. - andy22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you go to the your account page there is a link on the right hand side with text about watch it now, click on that, it will take you to an informational screen, with a link to activate it for your account, in ie
- MattH, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Hacking Netflix has a Better Screencast
http://www.hackingnetflix.com/2007/01/demo_netflix_wa.html
The Older Gamers pretty much copied Mike.K's screencast - ScionX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Am I the only one that thought you would be watching movies on a watch when you read the title?
Probably.............
Too early, need more coffee. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I have been surfing the Internet too much. The line has been blurred between your and you're - between there, they're, and their. And, while I'm at it, dieing is not a word.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Windoze only for now. Sorry Mac users, Netflix is going to make you wait for a second-hand version.
The net is supposed to be PLATFORM AGNOSTIC? Web applications should be that way too, from the start. - Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2This is lame because it still only has B movies and non-new releases. Call me when you can actually stream real Hollywood hits and you get unlimited movie streaming for a set price.
It looked like their pricing scheme and software set up so that it so they can charge you for 10 hours of movies just like you would get 5 movies that are 2 hours each from a video store. This doesn't help the consumer at all. Being able to stream only prevents us from getting the DVD from the store, which isn't exactly the only reason to stream movies to a computer. Some people would like to see the savings provided from not having to have a retail store with boxes of movies and employees to maintain. There should at least be a 30% or more savings from the cost of traditional movie renting. Or maybe at least a price that is cheaper then the current unlimited send and receive plan which you can recycle maybe 8 movies a month. So 8 movies x 2 hours is 16 hour plan.
Make that $15 a month and put real movies out there and I am in. - rinocom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Anyone have a link to the Beta signup? Or is it closed?
- geodescent, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7All I ask for in life is a narrator who doesn't say "umm" all the time.
