- kuzkos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32Don't worry, I modded every comment before yours "up" just to erase your damage. Happy digging!
- templest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Shameless. At least link directly to the forum, instead of making us surf through
your blog (which is completely unrelated).
http://forum.collegechat.info/ - lament, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22yeah and while we're at it, we should also stop developing new browsers, FTP programs, BitTorrent programs, etc.. there's just too many out there. lol
- otaking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18any good examples out there?
- eridius, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Talk about abuse of comment power. Do you feel compelled to go against the majority opinion? At parades and festivals, do you sit in a corner crying because everybody else is happy?
- 3stripe, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21She's a beauty! Nice work Mark!
- Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20eridus, you missed his point. He didn't say that he modded them down for liking the forum, he said that he modded them down for all saying the same thing.
I did the same thing, modded each one down. A dozen people all saying the same thing is useless. If somebody else says what you were going to say, that's what the thumbs up button is for.
Digg 3.0 is like USENET's September that never ended - loads of AOLers saying "me too". - Tialys, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I've been follonwing this project for a few weeks now waiting for 1.0 to come out. Cant wait to try it out!
- thechitowncubs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12the more the merrier
- cwmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11How can this be web2.0 if there aren't rounded corners and at least 30 gradients with slightly different shades of blue?
- pplante, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Are the first few comments from friends of the submitter? :)
- rotarychainsaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Any forums out there using this already? I'd like to see some examples in action.

It's grinding to a halt because of Digg though. - avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree... I was asked to provide a 'Online Suggestion Box" at my work... and then this pops up.. I have installed it and it's everything that I need.. I love when stuff like that just falls together.. Thanks!!
- Bompo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9This forum is using a older version of Vanilla
http://www.wow-myst.com/ - Nick22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I love the concept, but i just dont like how it looks and feels. Meh oh well
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10This is one of those ideas where you think "*****, how come I didnt come up with that!!!"
I just d/l'd it, gonna give it a go... - uttles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So, where's the competitive advantage? I don't see anything special here. In fact, it may even be slower and less functional than most of the forums I've seen.
- WallPhone, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13The moment we all have been waiting for-- way to go!
- adamsitting, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The easily kills every other stinking stay in the mold forum I have seen. And, if you want it to look and act like all the other lousy forums out there, add on the useless extensions. Of course, there are some very good extensions also.
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is clean and to the point. No fancy graphics, no over barring rounded edges with 3D depth and not a hint of texture using CSS Java JS XML HTML TXT ASCII all in one shot. This is the age of the "lets get back to information" and fading away "cute graphics and effects to a/my website look coolio". Just like Dan Akroyd - "Just the facts maam."
- folletto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Have you ever thought that an "extensible" platform MUST be "plain and clean", otherwise it will just end to be bloated? ;)
- xr56n44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5very easy to install & get running. but, what's the big deal? no threaded discussions, no special features of any kind really. i can see why it's called vanilla, too plain for me though, i'd want at least french vanilla.
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Can someone tell me where the AJAX comes in? Seems to be a standard PHP/MySQL driven forum. to me? The only AJAX-ified thing I could find was the advance/simple search switching.
Not trying to be difficult to please, I genuinely want to know :) - keesj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7create one?
- lerchmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ajax is the "magic" word that sends stories to the front page.
- lament, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5do you guys even read?
"Vanilla can run on just about any web server in the world. To run Vanilla, you should have:
* PHP 4.1 or greater
* MySQL 3.23 or greater"
christ. - folletto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've used the 0.9 since a long time and I was waiting for the 1.0. I'll setup on my private forum asap.
Still, to all the detractors, Vanilla is a really good product since it tries to go back to the meaning of "forum": discussions. Vanilla is clean, simple and fast. No bloat. No hundreds of features that nobody uses, still with extensions support, so if you need something just add it.
Very solid, as I could see, and with a good programmer that interacts with the submissions. - LinkTiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not only is the Vanilla author working on a blog system, the Wordpress author is working on a BBS: bbpress. I've not played with it, and as such, I don't know how functional it really is, but it seems to do a good enough job for the wordpress support forums.
http://bbpress.org/ - Night, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Thanks Bompo I acutally think that vanilla looks really ugly compared to your average BBS system, but your site shows that with a lot of editing it can look good :) Digg up.
- TROGDOR42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.frontrowcrew.com/forum/
- folletto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just customize it. ;)
- folletto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Competitive advantage: think about a small extensible platform, adaptable to any need, vs a full bloated and slow forum solution, with hundreds of features that nobody uses.
- TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Forgot to add congrats to Mark and all the developers. Mostly for KiSS (Keep it Simple Stupid)! Very nice!
- drakey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hooray digg, mod those honest questions off the board!
- nirvdrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone happen to know if this can be used with PostgreSQL? I only see mention of MySQL, but I hope nowadays people have generally adopted DB abstraction APIs. Anyway, I'd hate to have to install another RDBMS server just to run a single app. Thanks for any info.
- macattacks10, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That's pretty impressive how smooth and simple it looks for it's one purpose of serving a WoW guild. Looks like it is a great, lightweight, and highly customizable forum software.
- Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Who writes new php apps that dont support 4.x when that's about 95% of what is installed on webhosts nowdays. 5.0 may bq, but it still is not widely adopted and until apps take advantage of it there will be less pressure to update. 3.x to 4.x took awhile and the same will probably hold true for the 4.x to 5.x upgrades unless a critical vulnerability cannot be patched in 4.x and requires upgrading to 5.x.
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dont understand the big deal about Vanilla. It's lightweight and simple, yah that's nice, but is that really why everyone is crapping their pants over it? Or is it because it's "AJAX" and "extensible"? I agree that a lot of forums these days are over the top with useless features (makes me think of MS Word or Excel), but they're not all like that. Vanilla is pretty ugly out of the box too, at least when you're browsing a category, the yellow background they use makes me cringe.
- giginger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think people are getting mistaken into thinking AJAX is all sliding graphics etc.
AJAX is primarily a way of loading data without a full screen refresh. Vanilla is the first proper use of AJAX I've seen implemented. It's used for a purpose and not for flashy graphics. This is how it's meant to be. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does it provide easy integration into existing sites and accounting systems? If not, it's worthless.
The thing I hate most about all these sites that use PHPBB and other systems (rather than writing their own forum software like I decided to do) is that you have to sign up for the website... and then you have to sign up all over again just to use the god damn forums! Screw that! It should be a seamless experience! - remouk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unregistered users can post if you install the right extension.
- rYno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mkdir extensions
chmod 777 extensions
tada!!!! - macattacks10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well it has a pretty simple and clean layout. Lightweight like Firefox and you can easily add any extra functionality you want with the plug in dealies they have. And everyone loves Firefox.
- Inglorion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Vanilla may have added a lot of sorely missed function other forum software have negelected, but it _looks_ pretty bland, to be honest.
- osmaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's got simplicity, that's for sure. Great for us geeks (even those of us who poked 'round and found that it really has basically no AJAX, just some tiny javascript bits here 'n' there), horrid for the 80% of the other people on the web who want their cute avatars/emoticons/IM-info/etc/etc/etc.
- nirvdrum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks for the information. I apologize for not search the fora for something that probably should have been in the documentation.
- folletto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Plain wrong: people first wants to communicate, and that's clear to anyone that it will use ANY media that comes, even the worse one (like, I mean, overbloated vB or phpBB). Vanilla is simple and clean. Any new user will learn how to post in a snap and if you want "fancyness" just customize it.
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check it out, this forum actually has a SEARCH feature! I used it and learned...
* Mark
sqlite is not supported out-of-the-box with Vanilla. I did some testing with it a few months back and got it sort-of working, but it doesn't support some of the sql I was using and I ended up stopping the development so I could focus on ironing out more important bugs.
I still have plans to make sqlite and postgresql add-ons for Vanilla ... but that will happen after version 1 is released. " - coder_cotton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1phpbb can be modified to use whatever user table you want, thats how i do sites w/ forums anyhow.
