- ceeam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37No, not in response. It was announced several months ago that VMWareGSX (now known as VMWare Server apparently) will be released as free (gratis) software. You could download a beta all this time (IIRC). The news here is that version 1.0 has been released.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Ah, but it's just come out of beta.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18VMWare Server is absoluely superb and cross platform. Why would you want to PAY for Windows to host virtual machines when you can host it on linux? VMWare Server + Centos is a great combination.
By the way, the real news here is that it looks like it's out of beta... - kanago, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16This is NOT a post about the newest release. It's a post about making it free.
Thus, outdated. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Exactly. Other way round.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12but have you had v1.0? i bet not...
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14"btw this was on downloadsquad this morning. you are so late."
Excuse us for not visiting the exact same websites as you every day. Send us a list so we don't make this mistake again in future. - mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If you have enough ram, no problem.
- deckerinflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Confirmed. The description is grossly misleading as VMServer WAS available for free no later than April 24th. Also note that the serial number is FREE.
- Slink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6isn't one of the great things about Digg letting people know about stuff? Not digging something because you've found it somewhere before is ridiculous, if it's something good and worth knowing about then let other people know too. I can't believe you would get annoyed that something had lots of diggs just because you personally have known about it for a while. You have missed the spirit and point of Digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Could someone help clarify the differences between versions Workstation and Server please?
- suspect23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3VMWare GSX server has been free since february.
http://news.com.com/VMware+to+make+server+product+free/2100-1012_3-6034615.html - i440, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Will be able to run Slackware/Debian on a Windows system with it?
- GrahamStw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Runs fine on my XP x64 Professional edition.
Very useful for testing installs. - djmdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It runs fine on XP, perhaps they don't offer technical support for it?
- mikkoko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One thing I know of is that Server comes with a client program (based on VNC?) that allows you to install virtual machines on one PC and use them on another through the network.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7It'll be on the front page by the morning:
TOP TEN WEBSITES I VISIT! - thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow.. I've been using the free VMWare server on Linux now for hmm.... 3 months or more..
- GotoDengo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly. The news here is that it has come out of beta and is now GA. VMware is obviously using GSX/VMware server to get people comfortable with virtualization so that they move to the very not-free ESX/VI3.
VMware rocks. - Spuby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Runs on Linux and Windows 2000/2003 Server - http://www.vmware.com/products/server_comp.html" - so no Windows XP support...
- krouskop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My quick scan of the comments doesn't seem to find a comment explaining this very clearly. Let me try:
** VMWare Server, as a beta, has been available for free for some time. Today (or maybe yesterday) 1.0 was released. So now the real product is available for free. This isn't a surprise - VMWare did announced it would be free when 1.0 came out; a better title for this article would be "VMWare 1.0 now available". ** - canadaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The VM's you create with the Server product are compatible (with some work) with VMWare's enterprise product ESX Server. If you create a VM with Workstation you cannot import it to ESX. You can also manage GSX Server (Server's old name) with Virtual Center which is a central management console for VMWare's Server products. With that said, all of the things I mention above are definitely not free.
- MyNameIsNotBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@canadaman
You can, in fact, import workstation VMs into ESX (and vice-versa.) The catch is that you have to create your workstation VMs with virtual SCSI rather than virtual IDE disks. (There is no virtual IDE support in ESX.)
There are even some (unsupported) ways to make a virtual IDE disk into a virtual SCSI disk. It's a but of a PITA, but it works - I've done it many, many times. - culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Some clarification:
While I hated the description of this item so much, I resubmitted it with a better description, VMWare's descision to release a free server product WAS a response to Microsoft's overly agressive Virtual PC / Virtual Server pricing. And while the decision and announcemt were made months ago, this is the first public (non-beta) release of that product.
Regardless, the product rocks. I just wish my submission had made it instead of this one so that people would be talking about the merits of the program instead of the submitter's inability to describe this submission. - LeLoup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uhhh... the other way around.
I've been using the FREE VMWare server for a couple of months now.
Anyone noticed that the latest release fixed some things (now you can mount .ISOs) and broke others (restricted to 2 USB devices)?
Micro$oft playing catch-up again. - ubuntumatthew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have been using the free beta for at least a month now and noticed yesterday that the 1.0 release was out and free so I installed it on Ubuntu 6.06 and am very impressed. Thank you to vmware!

- jmandawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it has something to do with Xen also...
- Justathought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does it have to do with the hardware that you can install each on, Number of CPUs, ethernet cards, etc?
- Nixkitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, Virtual Server was released for free a long time ago, what we are waiting for is for VMWare Workstation to be free ;)
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Nice. Now all I have to do is wait for it to finish making the virtual disk. At this rate, it should take about an hour or two.
- ooowahooo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i couldn't have said it better myself kanago
- kanago, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10It's been a while, man. Old news, no digg.
The information is inaccurate. - kanago, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6I prefer Xen, thanks. Don't even start the Linux Vs. Windows battle, man. There's arguments for both sides. Guess what? Windows is here and it's doing well market-share-wise.
I'm still a little bugged that this is doing well when it was announced ages ago. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3because there's a "dupe" thing.
- ooowahooo, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6old old old I've had vmware server for a month or two
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -12/+0Everyone, please note that you also need a serial number. *sigh*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4Was just reading this over at /.
- netMASA, on 10/12/2007, -22/+3WHY DID THEY GET RID OF THE "THIS IS OLD" BURIED OPTION!?
btw this was on downloadsquad this morning. you are so late.
