- xistboi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+83Uh, I am the owner of the site. I didn't submit it.
- firepowered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+67LMAO, first thing the theif does after cleaning the laptop is play WOW.
haha, WOW has driven people to crime!! :P - netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -57/+107don't lie, digg will accept it, you just wanted to make us all look at your ***** blog.
Case in point, http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2004/12/1842/
Nice professional journalism there
http://orbicule.com/undercover/recovery.html
//thats the actual site. - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45i wondered the same thing and found this on their site:
"As outlined before, the problem with recovery stories is that they could violate the privacy of the victims and of the thief. The last thing we want is to give the thief a chance to sue the victim or us for violating his/her privacy. This might sound crazy, but it's a real concern...."
sad but probably a legitimate concern. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40actually, before you act like an ***** and denounce him as a liar, try it yourself, all you get when you submit http://orbicule.com/undercover/recovery.html is the 'are you sure that url is correct?' error
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36Most of the thieves we know about are that dumb.
The others.... well, they're probably laughing at us from their yacht. - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+43"don't lie, digg will accept it"
it DIDN'T work for me and i don't appreciate being called a liar. - saisumimen2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Besides, what if you're the poor sucker who bought this from some guy's yard sale and next thing you know your face is all over the Internet and it says you're a thief?
- airniqueel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31The law is that all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.

Black docks are bigger. - loqqq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Sorry, this notebook has been flagged.
- numptydumpty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25in your head i'm sure that made sense but i don't think it translated to the screen very well.
- Snof, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20@1021
Assuming the owner has set a firmware password the thief can't reinstall OS X or format the drive. No solution to tape over the camera, but my guess is that most thieves wouldn't think that the computer will spy on them, and therefore wouldn't worry about blocking the camera. - kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20He uses the laptop to play WoW... and watch porn... this guy is outta control! (although if I were to steal a laptop, the first two things I'd also run on the laptop would probably be WoW and porn... after all, what is a laptop for anyway if it isn't for those two things?)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19for the record, it doesn't
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Entrapment? Hardly. It's not like someone was holding a gun to his head forcing him to steal the laptop. Just because something is available for theft, doesn't mean it's entrapment when you steal it.
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17It's not like he was looking at por... =(
- Avisto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It IS an advertisment.
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17See I can't get past the fact that I would never steal a laptop..
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18how easy would it be to just reinstall os x and/or cover up the camera with some tape?
- Madcowz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13What a great service.
Shame it can't deliver several thousand volts to the lazy disrespectful thief who goes round stealing from other hard working people.
If it is anything like Britain, he would be a repeat offender, with 30 -40 previous offences to his name, and each time gets a little slap on the wrist and told he is a naughty boy. - dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Why do they blur the thief's face and Yahoo ID?
- netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Damn look at that dock....could he put anything else in there....
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12....or steal one ;-)
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Hey guys can you please keep the dock talk in your pants, this IS a public forum.
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9We need agencies to work this hard for identity theft cases. If you think about it, there's a camera pointed at every cash register or gas pump in the country and internet merchandise needs a delivery address. My wife had her purse stolen from our locked car, the police said that finding the theives is always just a matter of organizing the data. Too bad no law enforcement agency ever wants to take the time.
- SoundJudgment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I can never trust another World of Warcraft player again! ;)
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The scary thing is that he was doing that in the bathroom. I bet there is some "DNA" evidence left on the laptop. UGGGHH!!
- somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think I read some of your Ninja stories. I recognised the literary flair.
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The article specifically refers to the built in iSight camera on the Mac. I know there are laptop PC's that have a similar feature, but mine wasn't one of them. Basically, I was just making the point that actually getting back a stolen computer is pretty cool, not trying to start a legitimate PC v. Mac point/counterpoint argument.
- digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8code_of_life: ENTRAPMENT? Are you kidding me? Please tell me you're only being sarcastic, or just being ignorant for fun.
I suppose if the guy stole a Ferrari sitting outside it was also entrapment, you know since it was just sitting there.
Besides, ENTRAPMENT only applies to law enforcement (that's the police) coercing someone to do a criminal act that they would not normally have done.
Please lay off the law and order - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This article sort of looks like an advertisement, but even so, I think $39 for this program is well worth it. It's about time my laptop did some big brothering of its own.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7He scratched his ass and used his poo finger on the touchpad.
- mskadu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Lovely wallpaper on that mac though. Where can i get that one?
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"You don't need the CDs/DVD to create a new empty account. And this would probably have been enough to stop Undercover from doing its job.
To format the hd and clean up everything... yes, he would have needed the CDs/DVD. But since he's a thief, I'm sure he doesn't have any moral problem downloading pirated software from the web."
I would think Undercover would run as Admin, or from a cron job. - freff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9See, I've been resisting switching to a Mac for so long, but after this...
A couple months back, I had a laptop stolen out of my place (along with a bunch of other stuff), and what I wouldn't have given to have had a service like this available. Not sure if I'm ready to make the switch yet, but it's another point in the Mac's favor. - smpdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+61) The green light doesn't turns on while Undercover is working, it works, lets say.. undercover! duh.
2)You can't create a new account without an admin password, and with FileVault enabled it's impossible to break it, even with the DVDs. Undercover suggests that you enable a dummy guest account so the thief gets chance to actually use que laptop.
3)You can't format the HD without a firmware password, even if you got the Mac OS X DVDs, further, creating a new account wouldn't stop Undercover from working as it's a root process. The RAM trick doesn't always work. - david76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7To the designer/developer of Orbicule:
This is why you don't use black text on a black background and rely on a background-image to make your text readable. Once your site was dugg under, the text loads, but alas, no background-image. So, you can't read the text. - nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It might be worth it for some high-resolution snapshots of the guy getting electrocuted.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"why did they do this?"
what they mean is they take it off the "stolen list". that way, if it's stolen again it can be registered (again) as "stolen". - eihwaz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12That was a really dumb thief...
1) he didn't notice the green light turning on right next to the webcam while taking a nice picture of him.
2) he deleted files folder-by-folder, instead of easily deleting that account and creating a new empty one.
3) he connected to the web without cleaning up the HD! I format my HD even when i buy a brand new Mac, I can't imagine someone using a STOLEN one without completely erasing the disk.
I wish all thieves were as stupid as him... - nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah I dunno if i'd *WANT* my laptop back after all of that. I wonder what happened to the thief??? I hope he spent some serious time in jail. Isn't theft above $600 considered a felony?
- MobbyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Can you format and restore OS X on a Macbook without the CDs? Or wouldn't you need them? I don;t own one so I'm not sure. I would think he would need them, so how could he (the thief) restore OS X without the CDs?
- tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love seeing comments like these from people who probably have no experience in managing a gigantic corporation.
- saisumimen2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"I would never start it without an OS install disc to first wipe it clean."
But what if there was some really good stuff on the HD??? - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It COULD, but that would require some switched inductors.
And knowing you'll never have that computer work again. - DVRDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ebay!
- twatwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4meant to say DOES NOT take advantage of the isight camera
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'll take it.
$2500 laptop? you guys are paranoid. -
