- awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The eyes on statues like that give me the creeps. Don't know why.
- mlkmnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Agreed. It's the totally wrong picture to use. Dunno whether its the angle or if its just the size of the girls eyes, but it looks like her eyes are rolling back into her brain like she's turning into a Zombie. Given the right source picture this could be a cool effect though.
- garf12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7where the heck is the stone texture file? I guess you gotta get your own stone?
- bkemper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There are some nice (and free) stone textures here:
http://www.mayang.com/textures/Stone/html/Other%20Stone/index.html - kcopp87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is why I hate obsessed open-source fanatics. Face the freakin facts, Photoshop is lightyears ahead of GIMP.
You DO realize that the "emboss" filter is not GIMP exclusive, correct?
Plus the fact that the end result of the emboss filter looks NOTHING like what was shown in the article. - KevlarRelic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Photoshop may be ahead of the Gimp, but what we're all forgetting here is that if you use photoshop at home and aren't moderately rich, you probably have a cracked version of it.
Simply put, most photoshop users are merely petty theives!
Ha-ha! *Slashes rope, causing chandelier to plummet down and crush the king's men under it's considerable weight.* Opensource steals from the rich and gives to the poor! And it's not petty theivery, it's uh... noble theivery. In the case of open source, that is. Yeah. - w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I tried it on a couple of pictures and it seems like it works well, you just can't use any old picture that you have. Good contrast and the right angle make a big difference.
- hass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"where the heck is the stone texture file?"
The stone texture file is not in the duggmirror cache. I got the page to load once, but not the texture file. Can someone post a mirror of the texture file, please? - Ebeniz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Stollen directly from worth1000.com

Blogspam!!!! - stanleyfresh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@kcopp87 (and all other pro-ps / anti-gimp folk)
Please stop your whining. YES, photoshop is better than the GIMP. However, I -- and many other people -- can't just whip out 600 bucks like it's a frickin nickel and don't care to become software pirates, either. So, go back to in your Photoshop hole and leave the GIMPers alone. - ZeonZumDeikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Holy crap, that's awesome.
I wonder if I can do this with gold or bronze as the texture (And if it would still look so good). - MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Shouldn't the crack in the face follow the contours of the face?
- BadMonkey0001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sure you could, but the method would be different. Instead of adding the stone texture above the desaturated photo and setting it to multiply, reverse the layer order and processing. Put the desaturated photo above a rather clean looking (no overly dark spots) gold or metal image. Now set your photo layer to "multiply" and leave the "gold" (bottom) layer rendered "normal".
Bonus Points: Put a duplicate copy of your photo on top of your "multiply" layer, set it to screen and adjust opacity to taste. This will give you highlights from the photo. Experiment with blending modes.
Super Bonus: Use clone stamp, smuge tool and the liquify filter to give faux three dimensional contours for wood textured work. - scorpioz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmm,, my (weak) attempt to follow the tutorial
http://www.siue.edu/~snaz/try_01.htm
....spiraled into disaster ?
But I am happy with the results, did not put any considerable effort (^_^) - kcopp87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have a legit version, but it's because I bought the educational version. I'm still paying for it (since about January, haha). It's worth it for me, since I'm majoring in Graphic Design.
I totally understand it's way too expensive for most people, but it still makes no sense to say that it sucks, just because you can't get it. - w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@jsusanka
I just tried that in gimp and it looks nothing like what's in the article. One has to wonder if you even looked...
and @stanleyfresh
I do believe jsusanka is the one that started this mess by proclaiming that photoshop sucks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2WTF, I just tried that and no it looks NOWHERE near as cool as this. I'm sure you could do this in GIMP, but you suck at using it if you think that's a comperable effect.
- ironylives, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally, I thought his choice of photos was ideal _because_ of that eyeball thing.
Makes the resulting image look even more creepy, as though she turned to stone while alive or - better still - that she's not yet dead. :bbbrrrr:
Anyway, its a very cool effect; just in time for Hallowe'en...maybe print up custom party invites. :) - garf12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Why isnt gimp the industry standard then?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's my entry into the foray... http://www.lykachamp.com/LeahTurnedToStone.png
I probably could have done a better job blending the skin. I kinda shoehorned a drop shadow in there at the last minute. Oh well, not bad for quick and dirty. Cool tutorial! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm quite sure it's very simple. People... don't let these filterophiles sway you.... over-exposure to photoshop filters can kill.
Also, stop posting crappy "tutorials" to digg. If someone needs a tutorial, let them find it. - ZeonZumDeikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good find. I think I am gonna experiment with the Barnacles, although I'd have to get barnacles on the sides too.
- codercode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That looks more like a ghost..
- beatmonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Something that may or may not be obvious.. going back and adjusting the contrast of your original photo layer after trying this tutorial can make a big difference as well. For me it was the difference between a crappy attempt and a believable image.
- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Even creepier would be if the eyes were completely black like they do in some movies and TV shows (Carnivale, LOST, etc.)
- MLyzz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have a question, where it says "drag the stone texture into your picture", how exactly do i do that?
- kcopp87, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@stanleyfresh:
Regardless of whether you can afford it, it's asinine to claim it's superior. For a free program, GIMP is great, but it's not better than photoshop. It's just not. - jsusanka, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4here is how you do it in gimp
open file
chose filters
chose distort
chose emboss
look at preview
hit okay
file save
done
the gimp rocks!!
photoshop sucks
