- geekitechture, on 10/12/2007, -2/+88If you're going to turn off service in XP do it right. This list doesn't explain what you do or don't need, nor does it explain what's currently auto-disabled for you in SP I and II, nor does it list depedencies for each service, which you'll want to turn on or off accordingly. Try this page (an oldie but goodie), read it and get it done right:
http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm
Know what you're doing or don't do it, because you'll just waste time and frustrate yourself...turning off Print Spooler will disable your printer. Turning off CD Services will cripple some CD burning programs. Turning off Windows Installer will prevent you from installing programs that run off .msi installers until it's started again...so make sure you know what each service is for before you disable it. - LogicallyGenius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:Bjyc4FDF18oJ:www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp+http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp&hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&strip=1
click the above link if the main dont work - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30I agree, Black Viper is a wonderful list. XP SP2 runs flawlessly on my old 333 MHZ with 128 megs of RAM. I use TinyXP from piratebay as it's had a majority of the unnecessary components removed.
Black Viper list
http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12 - Murphy71984, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I love that reasons are listed for each. Many don't do that which in turns lead to questions. Dugg.
- Al3x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19@geuisteses (I don't know why you're getting dugg down other than your bad language)
I couldn't agree more, the guy who wrote this is a ***** moron.
He just clicked on each service that was listed on his OWN machine and it provides a description in the services window that he just copied and pasted.
He then said that what was on his machine is what is on most machines.
And finally he read the description, sounded it out a little bit, then said for nearly every one "if you don't know what this is then turn it off"...that's a good attitude!! /Sarcasm
That's like opening the hood of your car, not knowing what some wires do, then jerking them out.
He recommends disabling RPC and windows firewall?!?!?!?!? This guys should punch himself in the sack. If you don't specifically know what any of these services do, you should not mess with them.
If you'll notice, many are not actually started because they start only when used or needed. Check the status column. - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I'd be fired, unfortunately.
- ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Great list. Remember to also google for Black Viper XP and find this type of list also. I have been using it for years. I had XP SP2 running on a 400MHz laptop with 180 megs of RAM and a wi-fi card. I only had 16 services running at idol and a boot time of about 3 minutes.
- doctorperv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Whenever one of these lists gets posted a few douchebags at work turn all that crap off and break stuff. I hate these lists. If someone is already on your computer and can access your services you're hosed anyway.
- DoodleM, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26Turn it all off and go outside and get some fresh air :)
- gl00pp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17BlackViper was the *****. The most informative info on how to tweak your system to its possible best under XP. His site has been down for a while now.
I wish he was around, all i still have is a registry file that kills all the uneeded services it to his "gamer" profile/mode.
speeds ***** waaay up
G - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18You use mac/linux. We get it. Now go away.
- Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"The first rule is "If you don't know you need it, you probably don't.""
That makes me question this already. I think more like "If you don't know you need it, its probably better to play it safe and keep it."
Most ppl dont know what stuff in an OS does, so if u dont know what it does, doesnt mean its not important. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I'd agree it's a good idea to disable unused service. I would disagree with your first rule "If you don't know you need it, you probably don't." and would suggest "if you don't know, ask" instead. It's easy to screw up Windows by disabling important services.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Archive.org has a copy of blackviper's site with his recommended service settings
http://web.archive.org/web/20050828035113/http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
I think it's a much more trustworthy list. - Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15[continue using little brackets because you want to be part of the crowd]
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I have to say, I've tried turning off some of the more obscure services and great bits of windows stopped working. I don't think there's much that's really optional.
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13You know, if you don't like Windows, maybe you should keep your nose out of threads that talk about Windows.
- hogrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7check out the elder geek XP service list, it's as good as blackviper was.
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm - ideagirl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good general info, but a few of his recommendations made me cringe.
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"@geuisteses (I don't know why you're getting dugg down other than your bad language)"
Because he's trolling about his Mac. Nobody cares about your paperweight. - olik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Instructing people to disable windows services is generally bad advice. It leads to hard-to-diagnose functionality problems, and it's a crap shoot as to whether disabling any given service will make the computer more or less stable. However, considering the digg user profile, it might be better targeted here. In any case, DO NOT turn off system restore ... ever; you only care about it when you want it, and when it works it is beautiful.
Bottom line, if you need this guide, you probably shouldn't be messing with the services on your PC. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6In our company, we disable a lot of services on XP machines and also have 'profiles' to enable them when a machine really needs RAS or something the like.
But: we know EXCATLY what we need and want, and our list is very well tested :)
Just turning of services without knowing dependencies etc. will surely create a fubard system. - wirelesshnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This is the most worthless and inaccurate list ever!
Buried as such! - G8RR3TT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7http://duggmirror.com/software/Turn_Off_Unnecessary_Windows_XP_Services/
- imjasonn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wrote this two years ago for a lady working at a local radio station. It was meant to help a single PC user, NOT in a managed network environment, clean up services that consume resources.
I tell people what a service does (in extremely simple terms), tell them what it might break, and it seems evident to me that I intend you to turn it off, see what happens, and turn it back on if something breaks.
People often:
1) Give this article far too much credit for speed enhancements.
2) Assume I intended it to be overtly low-level, or geek friendly. The reason I don't go into deep details is the same reason so many people dugg this article. Most folks don't want the details explanation, they just want to know if it will cause irrevocable damage if they try turning it off.
I will beef up this article though - because so many people read and complain! I should either take it down, or rectify the failure to detail specifics. I can add some links and geek out a few hours, and it's worth it to those who actually need the information. For all you expletive laden commenters - just don't come to my site. - picosan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@geekitechture
Very nicely put, couldn't have said it better mahself. Most would be doing more harm than good just for turning off a service because the list "said so". A personal favorite page of mines and should be on everyone's favorite/bookmark's list, thank you for settin' 'em staight! - parapoop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The site is down - probably he needs to *turn off* more services
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Is BonziBuddy a bad service?
The owner is a n00b.
You are a n00b for digging.
GG~ - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd go even further on that last thought: if you don't know what it does, it probably means that it IS important. IMO.
- frenchkick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the black viper one works great
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why digg down a true statement?
- reticulate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Three words for a more secure XP desktop:
Limited User Mode. - ronjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That article is dangerous for John in Accounting or little Ralphie playing with dad's computer. They shouldn't have admin rights in the first place.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is your wife a dude?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
- bdub92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"If you don't know, turn it off and see if it breaks anything." From the article....if I lived my life by this, I'm sure i would be royally *****.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not exactly permanent for heavens sakes, if you turn a service off and ***** stops working, turn it back on! Rocket Science it ain't....
- McShaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Little Ralphie may be the one that gets dad out of messes when he reads Digg articles that show you how to "speed up your system". You may want to restrict "dad" and grant Ralphie admin rights....
- S4MF1SHER, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It's nice to have an explanation for some of the crap that runs on my PC. I use Win patrol, but that only tells me so much.
- AlanOfDale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A Toast to Black Viper where ever you are.
- SgtBeavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I disable System Restore, however I have several backup methods in place and I do my web surfing from either a virtual machine or my Mac. For those with lesser experience and levels of security, System Restore is a MUST. It does not give you a significant performance hit to begin with. If you get a malware infection, System Restore can potentially help you get out of it (severe infections justify a total rebuild)
If you are a gamer and you want every ounce of performance you can get out of a system, then you are probably the kind of person that is willing to accept additional risks involved with these changes. However if you are the average non technical home user that just browses the internet, you'd be a moron to follow this guys instructions. If you are technical, you'd do yourself a much larger favor by following BlackViper. Just look at all these other posts. People comment on BlackViper because the author knew WTF he was doing when he wrote it. - MiDri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Stuff rarely goes horribly wrong, but when it does I just take that as a time to reformat the windows partition (keep programs and data separated from windows, and each other) and reinstall windows.
Yes, I am a hardcore gamer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2neither one of those should have admin priviliges - especially not 'john' :)
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Spam sucks.
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@geekitechture
Either comment here or send an email to myself with your link, it's the only way I can think of to avoid Digging this and still be able to find it again.
It's maddening whenever I find lists like these that don't really offer exactly what each service does and what happens if they're disabled. My GF read one of these and it took weeks to figure out why her hot buttons no longer worked. I got their functionality back, but some of the on screen information is still missing (channel and volume work fine but there's no on screen feedback). - RMnTnA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree Black Viper was the first to post this type of info. Props to BV!
This site doesn't give half the info. I can't believe it's Digg's #1 story today. Voting Lame. - jackbauer007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.majorgeeks.com/Black_Vipers_Registry_Tweaks_d5381.html great to do all tweaking at once
gaming one is the best just make sure u enable the wireless service if using wireless internet. - h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Windows does an awful job routing" this guy obviously doesn't know what he's talking about, I had a 466mhz celeron running winxp it worked great as a router.
"TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" Terrible thing to turn off in a LAN. Does he even know what that is?
"Windows Time" Yeah because I hate for my time to stay in sync. "Sometimes it works." It works all the time for me.
This guy is obviously an idiot, marked as inaccurate. - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So I can have a slower more expensive computer?
Wow that would be smart! - ThisIsBob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 "If it ain't broke..."
