- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -1/+96Transmission is also the best torrent application for OSX.. Fast and reliable!
- OwlBoy, on 01/31/2008, -1/+83Hell Yeah. Keep up the good work Transmission team.
- Kamael, on 01/31/2008, -7/+53What about Deluge? It is very similar to µTorrent in looks and features...
- geminitojanus, on 01/31/2008, -0/+28Transmission supports encryption now.
- geminitojanus, on 01/31/2008, -0/+27Just to make this abundantly clear: Canonical didn't choose this. Ubuntu did. Ubuntu's community of supporters got together, looked at quite a few clients, and chose Transmission.
Transmission has a simple, plain to use UI, that's very similar to the tool it's replacing, but with advanced features that Gnome-BT didn't have. It's also faster than the utility it's replacing. All of these reasons factored in for Transmission's win.
(For the record, Fedora also moved to Transmission by default). - positron, on 01/31/2008, -1/+26If you're a uTorrent fan, might want to try out Deluge. Very similar look and feel, but available on Mac and Linux. It's what I use now after switching to Ubuntu.
- Protoss, on 01/31/2008, -0/+24You see, when a certain amount of people digg an article, it gets promoted to the frontpage.
- 44Bigs, on 01/31/2008, -0/+23Very wise.. Transmission has come a *long* way since last year. The developers really did a great job.
- srgtTarantula, on 01/31/2008, -9/+27hahaha, you so witty!
- cheesejaguar, on 01/31/2008, -1/+16Transmission is an awesome client, I've used it for about 6 months now and never had a problem with it.
- cornflakepirate, on 01/31/2008, -0/+14Yeah but uTorrent is proprietary anyway :/
- 1town, on 01/31/2008, -1/+14What are your problems? (with Transmission, my mac client of preference)
- cerealjynx, on 01/31/2008, -0/+13Transmission is also prettymuch ftw for OSX
- supermanred, on 01/31/2008, -0/+13I've used Transmission in OS X and Linux for a while now, it's a great torrent app... and they update it quite frequently.
- ThreeDee912, on 01/31/2008, -5/+18Here comes the uTorrent fanboys...
- ThreeDee912, on 01/31/2008, -0/+13Transmission DOES do encryption. It's been a feature since like 0.8.2, I think.
- sremick, on 01/31/2008, -0/+12Dugg for Transmission, although I use it on FreeBSD, not Ubuntu. ;)
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -1/+13Deluge Torrent. Its as good as uTorrent. i prefer that over transmission but thats mainly because i prefer the utorrentish UI that deluge has.
- ileftfark, on 01/31/2008, -0/+11way to mess up a simple command.
- Protoss, on 01/31/2008, -2/+13Kubuntu....
- jdong, on 01/31/2008, -0/+10Hi,
I'm an Ubuntu developer and member of the MOTU-P2P team that takes care of the torrenting/P2P packages in Ubuntu, and if you look at Launchpad's records for Transmission I've made the past few update packages for Transmission.
I speak on behalf of the Transmission team, the rest of the MOTU P2P team, and countless contributors that whenever one puts a lot of work into a project, it's great for it to receive some recognition.
So that's probably why it hit the front page. Or maybe because it had both "BitTorrent" and "Ubuntu" in the title. - inactive, on 01/31/2008, -2/+12uTorrent is not the be-all and end-all of BitTorrent clients.
- skyshock1, on 01/31/2008, -0/+10You might try throttling your torrents. Seems Deluge is max'ing your available bandwidth maybe causing page timeouts?
- rowjimmy, on 01/31/2008, -1/+11why the hell would they "ditch" almost 50% of the *nix gui apps because Linus Torvalds prefers KDE? myself, and I'm sure a ton of other Gnome users, can't stand KDE, or simply prefer Gnome... it would be moronic for Ubuntu or any distro to get rid of the choice that is such an integral part of what *nix is all about.
if you want to ditch gnome, go for it, nobody is stopping you. it has nothing to do with brains, it has to do with personal preference and the freedom to make that choice. - tatinthehat, on 01/31/2008, -2/+11sudo apt-get INSTALL ktorrent.
duh. use deluge or transmission instead while you're at it. - ThreeDee912, on 01/31/2008, -2/+9This is a genuine question.
Why is uTorrent better? Maybe the Transmission team can add some 'missing' features. - jamesey, on 01/31/2008, -0/+7I really like kTorrent but i'll give transmission a try
- blankhorizons, on 01/31/2008, -2/+8Maybe he meant sudo apt-get remove ktorrent =)
- chovy, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6Simple and effective....nothing better to date.
- andycr512, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6I haven't met a person who thought that.
- cleure, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6Transmission and Deluge are the best BT clients around as far as I'm concerned. Azureus has become way too bloated, and all of the newer versions have been incredibly slow and unstable for me.
- geminitojanus, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6Read the thread: Fedora also chose Transmission to be their default client, and absolutely nobody said anything about it not running on other OSes (especially since Transmission will run just about anywhere, including BeOS). Just about the only space left for Transmission to conquer is Windows.
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6You can if you go to the torrent's options. Look around.
- andycr512, on 01/31/2008, -0/+6Why not? Torrent use is extremely common these days, and Ubuntu has a trend of providing the most commonly used tools for desktop users.
- theblueprint, on 01/31/2008, -6/+12Absolutely nothing.
Transmission is the best choice for Mac users at the moment, but it's not that great. uTorrent is the *only* app that I miss from my XP days. Here's hoping that the OS X version comes out soon. - greatcaffeine, on 01/31/2008, -1/+6I always ask people to name one thing, besides gaming, which Windows PCs are actually better for. Haven't gotten an answer yet.
- ThreeDee912, on 01/31/2008, -0/+5http://www.transmissionbt.com/download.php
Mac, Linux, BSD, BeOS, Solaris, etc. It's open source, so you can always compile it yourself. - RainSerpent, on 01/31/2008, -4/+9I use Deluge on Ubuntu and it has worked well for me (I also use Firefox). I was surprised that Canonical did not pick it as the default bit torrent client. Oh well, what do I know? If I upgrade, I will just not select it or will uninstall it.
Now if we can just keep these nutjobs from suing all the torrent hosts (witness Demonoid & The Pirate Bay), we might just have something to download and share. - cornflakepirate, on 01/31/2008, -1/+6Eh? That's the client that used to be the default but just got rejected.
There's quite a lot of other Python apps installed by default in Ubuntu. - andycr512, on 01/31/2008, -1/+6"linus has spoken.
kde."
Great, he likes KDE. I don't. I use and love Gnome. Just because the person who wrote the Linux kernel uses a given desktop environment does not mean it is the "best", if such a distinction even exists (it's like saying "the best ice cream flavor"). - jstone, on 01/31/2008, -0/+5Yes, but they're looking for ease-of-use. Deluge is great for the power user but would confuse a newbie with all the features and options.
- TheNik, on 02/01/2008, -0/+4Yeah. I use OS X and Transmission pulls it's weight around, that's for sure. I made an Ubuntu box and that was the first thing I installed. :P
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -1/+5 gudnbluts : It's not the mountain of adware (++) hundredfold times the same apps with lousy GUI's that would get me to leave the quality of OSX freewares / sharewares.
There is an eject button on Mac.
Yes you have more hardware options. That's good for you. - Protoss, on 01/31/2008, -0/+4Tried it recently? It works just as good as in Windows.
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -1/+5It sucks.
- rowjimmy, on 01/31/2008, -0/+4transmission is a better default client because of its simplicity. personally i use deluge as well (after getting fed up with azureus generally being bloated to the point of absurdity) but deluge is too feature-filled & complicated for the everyday user who rarely uses torrents, and when they do uses them to download something official that happens to also be released via .torrent (eg, *nix distros, openoffice, etc). if you find you use torrents for more complex tasks - where you'd need encryption, the ability to prioritize files, and so forth - then use a more complex program. nothing is stopping you from apt-get'ing deluge, and i really doubt most people are so cramped for HD space nowadays that having Transmission installed will be their downfall...
- keithmcbride, on 01/31/2008, -1/+5RSS catching
- cornflakepirate, on 01/31/2008, -0/+4Er.... yes. Just like we need a default browser and a default text editor.
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -2/+6Then it would be a hackintosh not a macintosh.
- sexybobo, on 01/31/2008, -1/+4has a windows version also.
