Transmission 0.70 Released!
transmission.m0k.org — After almost a year without an update, we are pleased to release version 0.70 of Transmission. Transmission is a free, lightweight BitTorrent client. It features a simple, intuitive interface on top on an efficient, cross-platform back-end. Transmission is open source (MIT license).

- JohnClay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+84It should be noted that Transmission 0.70 has fixed the issues for which it was banned on many trackers.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Is Oink included in this? Man I hope so.. so sick of Azureus.
- dameetch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8what issues made had it banned before?
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3While that is really important, I'm just happy they fixed that janktastic icon they used to have. The new one isn't that great, but an improvement. Best bittorrent icon is Azereus to date, and it's the best client IMHO, but I can't resist this light-weight wonder.
- fowleryo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8still banned at oink... hopefully they lift it pretty soon.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@dameetch:
It had a max interval of 5 minutes to ping a tracker (lots of high-traffic trackers want 30 minutes or so), and there was something else.. like it would send too many packets or something to clients. I forget. - SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4It would report its upload as a ridiculously high value, making the user's share ratio go way up.
- nzknzknzk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Does that include the GTK version?
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2Man I really want an Oink account, any ideas on how to get one?
So what's so special about oink anyway? - UU7etc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7You want an account .. yet you dont know what's special about it.
Good luck with that. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Does that include the GTK version?"
Transmission is a very simple C backend, the OS X and GTK+ are simply front-ends for the client. So yes, the "bug"/"feature" is fixed for anyone using Transmission. Quite frankly, the patch has existed for about 6 months now to fix it, but they were waiting for the next "release" before including it. It remains to be seen if said trackers will remove the ban. - OneManArmy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Hi. I just want mention that there is currently a bug with this release. The Speed Limiting option doesn't work (for limiting upload speeds).
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1for anyone trying to get this to compile on linux, you need packages gettext and libgtk2.0-devel before you can compile from source. The gettext package will probably be the one you will need to go get, at least it was for me over here on Ubuntu Feisty.
- aprocter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Sorry to hijack, but where can I donate to the developers of Transmission. It's one of my favourite free mac apps, I wanna give back.
- gusx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1nvm bury
- tazx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Seriously fantastic; best torrent client on the Mac, and free, unlike XTorrent.
- jas8522, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Best torrent application for the mac in existence and I've heard it works great on BeOS, Linux and *BSD as well! Downloading torrents should get even better when trackers unban it for proper compliance...
Here's to hoping for a great 0.8 release with some features like PE/MSE and/or selective file downloading.- fakeplasticsnow, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Yeah, it's great, but the new icon for it sucks.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@fakeplasticsnow
o_O Did... did you see the old one? - TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The lack of selective downloading and file prioritizing are the only two things keeping me from wiping Azureus off of my mac. Far too often, I download an entire season of a TV series, and I want to stop the episodes I already have from downloading, and get the first few episodes first so I can start watching.
Three cheers to the Transmission team for the phenomenal release, however! Here's hoping the future gives us at least those two features ;-)
(ok, and maybe RSS-based downloading, and transport encryption.. but selective downloading is key) - bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1@tomfrost
uTorrent can now do the same and it runs faster for me. - wiihuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5he said mac.
- Lounger540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm with TomFrost,
Selective downloading with priorities, and transport encryption. Then I can dump the resource hog known as Azureus. - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I need selective file uploading.
- jahpraiseherb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30woohoo!
take that xtorrent!- majorp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2haha, exactly.
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Since XTorrent uses libtransmission, 2:1 odds there will be an 'update' to it sometime in the next week or so that fixes problems that it has as well
- majorp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, i think maybe he did that yesterday, build 40
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8And yet, Watanabe will still be charging money for an inferior program.
Go figure. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He charges money for a different User Interface, fans of his newsfire program probably think its worth the money to pay for free software.
- softwareelves, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Mac OSX Bittorrent done simple and easy. Congrats on this long awaited release, and all your hard work Transmission Crew!
- bmxboy661, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree
its like what utorrent used to be.
best Mac torrent client by far. - TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11For the record, I have a torrent coming in at 310kb/s, upload capped at 60kb/s, running full tilt.
Transmission is using between 2-4% of my processor, and 36 MB of RAM. That is a feat worth celebrating, in a client that's this slick :). Way to go, Transmission team! - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Transmission is little more than a clone of uTorrent's torrent engine; from what I can tell uTorrent is a bit faster (it's also a hell of a lot more mature), but Transmission is portable and platform agnostic unlike uTorrent, which is reason to celebrate all in itself.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7uTorrent is better software but it isn't open source and it is now owned by the Bit Torrent company itself making its future as a consumer friendly product uncertain. Transmission is Open Source! This software is invaluable because its a C client programmed well and platform agnostic, hopefully the developers keep their great work up and we get a Win32 client in the future.
- bmxboy661, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree
- Kzelk4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Awesome client. Thanks devs
- arhida, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's been a long time coming and hopefully most trackers will acknowledge the fixes and remove the bans on the client.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Until that happens, though, Azureus lives on (on my machine at least). I hope no more issues arise, and that the author acknowledges and solves them if they do.
- majorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1quality bizness! many thanks to the devs :)
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The only problem I had had with transmission was the lack of queue support, but now they have it. As icing on the cake, my torrents are now going about 6 times faster than they did before (probably the automatic port mapping), and the interface is neater. I'd digg this twice if I could.
- RexMaxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Don't worry, I did it for you.
- sacr3dc0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've been using the nightly builds for a while, this app has come along very nicely on both Linux and Mac. Kudos to all the developers.
- joerod, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2i love this app, glade a never version is out
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7well, i'm glade too.
- zackkitzmiller, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Wait for a new version of Xtorrent... I'm sure Dave has his eye's on this code.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22It's just eyes. Never use an apostrophe to indicate plurality.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I honestly don't see any reason to use XTorrent instead of Transmission. The search is nice, but not incredible. I'll take open source freeware over monolithic activation-crippled shareware any day.
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Finally.
/kicks kTorrent and Wined uTorrent out. - willgonz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This program rocks on my MacBook Pro. I'm going to and use it with that program that watches torrents for your favorite shows and automatically downloads them.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3make a feed from tvtorrents and use that. not hard, use google.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TVTorrents's RSS feed requires a donation, at least it did the last time i checked.
Not that it's not worth it, I support TVTorrents because it keeps me from needing to turn on the TV, ever. (And if I move somewhere that cable TV isn't included, it'll be saving me $20something a month)
- Glasyalabolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great client, I don't get the feeling I'm missing any features I could have/want on another client, and its simple and stylish. What more can you ask for?
- redrabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Best Mac torrent client...unfortunately, the only client on the mac to have transport encryption is azureus. As soon as Transmission has it (or I move off-campus, where I can only torrent through encryption), I'll switch.
- feverfive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Just switched to Mac a month or so ago... Give me transport encryption, and I'll dump Azureus in favor of Transmission....man, I miss µtorrent since my switch from Windows...
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3indeed, uTorrent pwns ALL.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Give me transport encryption"
They're working on it.
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What are the BeOs users going to download with it? ;)
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6BeOS pr0n.
- spargett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6***** yeah. Be gone java hacker clients.
- zamal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Will use it if the private trackers i'm using don't ban it.
- Emachine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Cool, good to know there are plenty of options...
But uTorrent FTW. - ravi7791, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Download speeds are barely touching 2 kbps over here. Someone ought to mirror it.
- d3designs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just in case someone does mirror it, here is the MD5 hash from the official download:

- neckaros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Best torrent client for mac, especially when coupled with "TVShow" that download show automatically as they are released
http://tvshows.sourceforge.net/- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, that app absolutely rocks. I'm pairing it with Azureus at the moment, but only because it's the only client I know of that currently supports transport encryption on the Mac, and my school manges to block _all_ unencrypted traffic (even unquestionably legitimate, like the stuff from the Azureus Vuze catalog). It gets the job done though. I wish I had a reason to complain about the past private tracker issues its had, but I guess I've just never been special enough (which sucks, as I have a 4:1 ratio at demonoid, which I'd consider semi-private at best)
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1What's wrong with BitTorrent's own client? Just wondering.
- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12everything
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I ask a legitimate question and I get dugg down for it...nice.
- wush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it's fully compliant then I'll definitely switch from Azureus. :)
- mjlizzad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This version crashes at launch on my Macbook Pro. Before this I was using the betas as they were posted. I guess I'm going back to the nightly builds.
- andrewguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ neckaros: agreed.. Transmission + TVShows 0.3 (just came out btw) http://tvshows.sourceforge.net/ are great. Also to the guys that made Transmission..Great job on all your hard work this app is one of my favs.. up there with adium.
- Stirk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If only there was an equivalent of safepeer for transmission..
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No encryption :(
Guess I'm sticking with rTorrent.- bart9h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2rtorrent and mldonkey inside a screen.
I can control them remotely, and they even survive an X restart.
- bart9h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2rtorrent and mldonkey inside a screen.
- brightscreamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What's the encryption for? Will it prevent you from getting sued? (Serious question.)
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Stops ISPs from throttling traffic.
With my ISP, without encryption I upload at a maximum of 40KB/s, while with encryption I upload at a max of around 120KB/s. And this is on the upgraded 10Mbps down/1Mbps up plan. It's even worse on the lower tier 512Kbps up plan, uploading at around 15KB/s unencrypted and 60KB/s encrypted. - esquilax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5not generally, no. but what it can do is circumvent some ISPs' throttling bittorrent traffic.
- s.h.a.r.p., on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you mean this won't earn your coveted mouse click? NOOOO!!!
if/when the ban of this client is lifted from oink (among other sites), this is going to be a great day in my personal torrent hell that came when i got a mac. if it turns out to be what i need (something similar to utorrent but for mac), i'd not only digg this, but donate to their project.
EDIT: huh, this was supposed to be in reply to the comment below saying 'no selective file downloading? no digg.'
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Stops ISPs from throttling traffic.
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2No selective file downloading? No digg.
I mean yeah I'll use it because I already use it, really because I'm too lazy to use anything else and I rarely ever download any torrents of anything (I mostly use newsgroups). But I would torrent considerably more often if I could actively select what I want.- xsuite, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2What newsgroups? Im desperately trying to find some newsgroups that I can use to download stuff. I bought unison (actually cracked it lol) but I dont know any newsgroups to use.
- davidpeele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@xsuite
Just go to:
www.binsearch.info
There you will find everything worth downloading from usenet (via NZB files)
- elpepe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Early reaction at some of the private trackers has been 'we dont care' -- not a good sign
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Could've at least gone with a six speed stick shift w/ an eight ball knob. Can I install 0.70 but keep the old icon?
- gutistg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5YOU can't.
- rkingucla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my upload speeds are doing strange things. whatever number i limit my upload speeds to, transmission doesn't follow it and it goes from like 100-200 KB/s. unless i make it 0, in which case it fluctuates between 0-10 KB/s. anyone else have this problem?
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm running it right now... seems to run well enough. It doesn't appear to be banned on Cheggit. I don't really use any other trackers (pervert lol), so I'm happy.
- pixelbasic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"Transmission is a free..."
I would hope so...given it's 'real' purpose.- pixelbasic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Denial is not a river in Egypt.
- defect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks nice, only thing I'm missing is auto-downloading via RSS :/
- impedance101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No NAT traversal :-(
- JohnClay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5___
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4JohnClay: well said.
- nape, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is there still no way to do selective downloading of files within a torrent? or am I missing it...
- hackerssidekick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read the posts ^^^
In other words, not yet
- hackerssidekick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read the posts ^^^
- aprocter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TV Shows, the automatic tv show downloader for mac, received an update recently as well.
- billyoneal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Who cares if its open source? Both Transmission and uTorrent are free, and uTorrent has several features not included with any other client. (Mainly WebUI) Also, while some criticize that it is part of the Bittorent Company, look at the changelog for the 1.7 beta. The developers are still perusing improvements with gusto, while transmission is relatively stagnant.
- overloadgimpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yes, however, utorrent == winblows.
transmission == mac, linux, beos
- overloadgimpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yes, however, utorrent == winblows.
- mattym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Am I the only one that doesn't use torrents out of fear of a lawsuit?
I mean, theres zero privacy on these things, even with private trackers. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But does it support foreign language character torrents now? Whenever I tried to download any Japanese tentacle pr0n in previous versions it used to crash.
- klaupacius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1late to the party, but big PROPS on the great work.
