- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Me, because it's the best bit torrent client available for Linux. Plus, it's damn good!
- DanAtkinson, on 10/28/2007, -9/+22Me. Because I don't like uTorrent.
- banana989, on 10/28/2007, -6/+19Me , because of all the cool plugins they have ... ahem-safepeer-ahem...
- ucg1, on 10/28/2007, -4/+13uTorrent hides its resource usage through its use of the Win32 API. In any case, the fact that it is Windows-only and is missing essential features makes it irrelevant to me. Azureus is the only BT client that fits my needs.
- adam.skinner, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17"uTorrent is Closed-Source = Bad!
Azureus is Open-Source = Good!"
So says the man running Windows. Perhaps with your 1337 coding skills (why else are you wanting the source code?) you will be able to improve on the resource usage of Azureus.
uTorrent is a lean, mean, fighting machine. And it's free to boot. I'll take the beer; I don't mind staying quiet anyway... - br0ck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Peer Guardian is available at http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ for most platforms and performs the same role as SafePeer but at a system-wide level. That was also the one thing keeping me from switching to uTorrent. uTorrent has almost everything else that Azureus has like scheduling and RSS feeds, and I can now actually use my computer at the same time now that I'm using 2-3 MB of memory instead of 600 MB .
- spradling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Transmission sucks ATM. It is missing many many features, plus it is currently banned by most private trackers like Oink. As soon as Transmission adds everything I need (like uTorrent) then I'll switch to it fom AZ like I did on Windows.
- Genma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it also runs fine on wine. hey that would be a fun comparison, usage of azureus vs. ut on linux/mac win emulators. not trying to be a fanboy here, just seems like the most popular plugins always mentioned are native features that the os cp java fans might not know about.
- MonsterBoxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I am particulary fond of the speed programmer. I am able to go full tilt when I'm in bed and moderate it when I need the bandwith. Yes its a total resource hog, but I run it on my fileserver and to be honest its not an issue for me.
- snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The 'Speed Scheduler' plugin is pretty useful for me as i can just start Azureus when i go to bed and the plugin will allow the application to use all my connection bandwidth between 00:01 and 07:59 since my ISP doesn't monitor bandwidth usage during those times, Azureus though is a bit of a dog so it isn't my default BT client though the day but i use it for large downloads and seeding fan-subs as it is much more reliable than other Macintosh clients.
- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Too bad you couldn't see the screenshots because his huge assed cursor was concealing the view :)))
Very tasteless. - Genma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ut has complete speed scheduler too. fyi in case this was the one groundbreaking feature that justified the ram usage.
- atomiximota, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6It's written on Java. What can you do?
- rogerk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41) The story was about plug-ins for Azureus.
2) I run linux. I really don't care how great uTorrent is, because I can't use it anyway. - neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's fine, but I'd rather use something that I can automatically keep up-to-date with like Azureus. And if you just like uTorrent because it's lean, then there's the original BT clients and derivatives, like bittornado.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Your extremely poor grammar does not take away from your statement.
I used to be an Azureus user but it was too bloated. I now use uTorrent. However, if Azureus were to correct the resource hog issue, I would switch back.
I really like Azureus. - partisan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@genma:
i like utorrent, too, but you've gotta admit... the rss feature is almost completely unusable to date... - galatians, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3All this talk about Azureus being a resource hogg doesn't make any sense to me.
I've used Azureus now for about a year. It has never crashed, it maxes out my net connection if I get a seed heavy torrent and I've never noticed a performance hit from using it. The interface looks good because it uses themed GTK and it has more features than I could ever need.
I'm currently downloading using Azureus and my CPU usage is 1% (P4 2.4Ghz) even though I'm using several other apps. Azureus is using a total of 66Mb of memory. Big deal, I have 350Mb free.
Maybe Azureues isn't so great under windows but under Linux its rock solid. I always thought that Java was slow and had crap interfaces. Azureus has proven me wrong here. If done right Java is awesome. - Anoobis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2At the top under the title "Getting Started" it said "To begin, visit the Azureus main page and select the plugin section."
it shows you pics of where to find the plugins? what else do you need? - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'd like to know what version of Java you're using, cause it eats almost as much RAM as firefox for everyone else.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No one likes BitsOnWheels?
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is the best P2P (Puckett2Puckett) software available.
- bdr529, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Reveal your plugins to ME!!
- madscientist327, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The only plugins I think are useful are safe peer and autospeed. Too bad Azureus uses too much resources. :( I used to use Azureus but it slowed my computer down so much I had to switch to uTorrent. I miss those plugins. If only plugin support could be added to uTorrent or the functions of some of those plugins could be added.
- delgertome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1p2p (Puckett2Puckett) ftw!
- moggy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3you want a good rss scanner for tv shows then check out http://www.tvtad.com/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Did someone actually type this or did a cat roll across a keyboard somewhere?
You win the special olympics typing medal. - Galaeron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There we no links to the plugin's mentioned. Don't know about you guys but I always considered it a good thing to cite your work...
- kewldude606, on 10/28/2007, -2/+2br0ck- uTorrent has ipfilter capabilities. Just drop an ipfilter.dat into the same folder as uT and enable it in the advanced settings.
- jesusisapervert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The above article says the following about "Safe Peer":
"This plugin imports a list of IP addresses from Blocklist.org to use as an IP filter before connecting to peers. This is definitely at the top of my list when it comes to essential Azureus plugins. Once you download and install this plugin, it will forever do the hard work of keeping the "streets" just a little bit safer without any additional hassle."
For those using uTorrent, you can achieve the same level of privacy (it even uses the same blocklist!), by reading this story:
http://digg.com/technology/Protecting_yourself_against_the_BitTorrent_bandits_
Why are some windows people still using Azureus? I used to love Azureus and it saw no competition until uTorrent came about. But Azureus is slow and uses around 100MB of ram, since it's running in an interpretated scripting language. uTorrent on the other hand is tiny (100kbish), only uses 2.2MB of ram, and runs natively on your machine. Don't you think it's time to make the switch if you're still stuck using Azureus? Sure, you can't use plugins in uTorrent, but why would you need them?
uTorrent already has an amazing RSS downloader, so you can have it sit in your tray and download whatever you want it to. So that's 1 less plugin needed. And with the tweak from the article above, you are as safe as using the Safe Peer plugin, that's another plugin down. Really, uTorrent has everything you need, give it a spin! - StR3Lok, on 01/05/2008, -0/+0every 5sec i get azureus running ping.exe that tacks up 100% cpu is there a fix for this
- azazelka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i also use LimeWire client, but after this article i will try Azureus
- famewolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For those using linux...I have utorrent 1.6 running fine under wine and just added the bluetack nipfilter.dat.gz to the appdata directory and it's working fine.
- rogerk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I would say RSS Feed Scanner is one of the best plug-ins for azureus. No more having to scour the torrent sites for those TV shows you're into, or those movies you want. Just make a filter!
http://azureus.sourceforge.net/plugin_details.php?plugin=rssfeed - Genma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2rss reader and filters are built into ut already. in case you would rather not devote another 100mb of ram to it for the additional plugin. j/k it's probably not nearly that much. is it?
- wolfzero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What, were the Plugins hiding somewhere that you had to reveal them for us? Bad title.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@jonnyeh
you must not be a fan of commandline then, bittornado rocks.
this way you can monitor your torrents from work by sshing into home and resuming your screen session.
on my mac i use azureus. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+14to bad they dun have a plugin that will take away the fact that its a resource whore
:p - DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2PC : uTorrent :: Mac : Transmission
- Genma, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3it's true! ut hides a total of 8 MEGS for me. can't hide from procexp or global usage, sneaky bastards. sorry couldn't resist, the hidden win32 api thing was just way too lame. especially coming from the anti-win detective.
- SassyDave, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I'm glad you like it. It's always nice to find out about users who use my code. :)
- rogerk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@ Genma
One groundbreaking feature is that it runs on a decent OS. - spradling, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4@reartl
Mac Users... There isn't a uTorrent for Mac...
@EssPess
3D Swarm sucks. Please don't spam...
@jsac
LOL, yeah really that's the only thing I hate in AZ. - sirber, on 10/12/2007, -18/+12"uTorrent is Closed-Source = Bad! Azureus is Open-Source = Good!"
but still uTorrent kick Azureus' ass, ressource-wise. - pjh3000, on 10/12/2007, -20/+12uTorrent is Closed-Source = Bad!
Azureus is Open-Source = Good! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2funniest part is even tho my grammar wasnt up to ur nazi grammar standards it still was lightyears ahead of ur drivel in the content department ;)
- pjh3000, on 10/12/2007, -19/+5^^
Boo hoo hoo! I can only afford a 64MB stick of RAM for my PC. I'll have to settle for a second rate Bittorrent client. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3I was unaware that I needed anymore functionalilty in my current uTorrent setup and after looking at this article I only confirmed that fact. The 3d swarm was kind of neat though.
http://esspeaphotography.blogspot.com - Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -28/+10not a bad review, I have been looking for something like this for a while.
--http://net-k.us - retral, on 10/28/2007, -45/+10Bleh, who uses azureus anymore.
