- ostracize, on 05/23/2008, -6/+244What a ***** list. Songbird and Flock are practically Firefox, everyone knows about Opera, and the other two are Mac only.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -12/+121Opera is a good browser. I'm surprised they never took off.
- atdigg, on 05/23/2008, -6/+84Opera was not free, it was adware, displaying an ad banner if you didn't pay for it.
- knightmarex, on 05/23/2008, -3/+79I would add Epiphany and Konqueror to the list!
- mclev, on 05/23/2008, -14/+85Kinda sounds like, "Top 5 Ways To Get Laid That Doesn't Involve Putting A Penis Into A Vagina".
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -1/+56No Lynx?
(I kid) - sophiaperennis, on 05/23/2008, -6/+58I would add Camino. Now at version 1.6.1.
- Karmavs, on 05/23/2008, -1/+52…and both of those are practically safari.
- lordtyros, on 05/23/2008, -14/+62Opera is by far the most popular mobile browser. And Opera's features are always copied by Firefox and then IE.
- MrEggsalad, on 05/23/2008, -2/+40Flock is nothing more than a modded Firefox. Imo, shouldn't be on this list.
- nubnub, on 05/23/2008, -7/+44Opera is too popular to be included on the list and flock is just firefox.
- Karmavs, on 05/24/2008, -6/+35Three.
Safari, Firefox, Opera. - hackntossh, on 08/27/2008, -3/+324 of 5 are based on WebKit (Safari) or Gecko (Firefox). Great list.
Yay Opera. - zxcasd, on 05/24/2008, -4/+32but Opera's free now(for desktop computers)... its a great browser
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -1/+27Sounds like you're frustrated with some other stuff.
- salvadorwii, on 05/23/2008, -0/+25hey lynx is useful...
if you ruin your display config you can download drivers with that - DarknessGP, on 05/24/2008, -1/+23Opera is charging out the ass for laptops, it's ridiculous!
- Laminarcissus, on 05/24/2008, -0/+22Cut to Digg Central:
"Oh crap, five more browsers everybody's going to expect us to test." - gilbes, on 05/23/2008, -3/+22I was expecting this article to be awful, but after the author wrote this:
"But what about the rest of us slobs who protest anything corporate, reject anything mainstream, and don't even know why?"
It was very clear he understands the topic. Few people have valid reasons to "protest anything corporate, reject anything mainstream". And its refreshing the author acknowledged this. - Ridikul, on 05/23/2008, -0/+20It's basically Firefox with a few extras things and a different UI.
- expert01, on 05/24/2008, -3/+21What about laptops?
- effingham, on 05/23/2008, -1/+18The "lightness" of IE?
- Fordi, on 05/23/2008, -0/+18Two Geckos, two Webkits, and Opera.
Sorry, mates, but #2-4 of your list still count as Safari and Firefox. - lacreme, on 05/24/2008, -8/+25***** LIST SUCKS!
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -1/+17Whatever, Dad.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/24/2008, -1/+17LOL at obvious Mac bias.
None of the browsers that are Linux or Windows only are even mentioned, and Mac is listed as primary platform for all the browsers.
Here's a better non-biased list:
http://www.alternativebrowseralliance.com/browsers ... - inactive, on 05/23/2008, -2/+17Hmmm what's this foxfire?
- Carlix, on 05/24/2008, -1/+15What about Konqueror?
- cesclaveria, on 05/24/2008, -2/+13Three
Opera, firefox, Konqueror - TheWriteGuy, on 05/23/2008, -2/+13K-Meleon is the one I would like to add. It's built on the Mozilla engine.
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/ - AQUANETA, on 05/23/2008, -4/+15Maybe konqueror, definitely not epiphany... its a shame, they slapped a GTK/Gnome UI on top of the big old gecko, then called it the default gnome browser. It is too simple to do anything, you can blame the Gnome project's somewhat flawed ideal of ultimate simplicity.
- InnerBlueAbyss, on 05/23/2008, -9/+20Firefox is the only browser for me son.
- afidler, on 05/23/2008, -4/+14Gee, only a *little* mac biased. I am, however, definitely checking out the "social browser" Flock just for kicks.
- heyblue, on 05/24/2008, -1/+10It's faster than the speed of comedy? Wow. That IS fast.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -4/+13If you protest anything corporate? Did you build your own comp with your own silicon you found? WTF...Hate anything mainstream? Like a computer you mean?...I know why...you're a tool who doesn't see non-conformity as conforming...
- tama00, on 05/23/2008, -3/+12Your kidding right, epiphany uses a newer version of gecko than firefox! and i believe the idea of gnome was to be as simple as possible as opposed to kde. Epiphany feels way more integrated than firefox ever does in gnome especially since it took firefox SOOOO long to move to GTK2!
- twiztidsinz, on 05/24/2008, -5/+14If Opera decides to implement user-created AddOn's I bet you'd see it become quite a bit more popular.
I've used Opera for a while and I loved it. More or less the only two problems I had were the lack of AddOn's and that it was TOO customizable which isn't bad, just overwhelming at times.
If I could get AdBlock Plus and NoScript on Opera I'd probably switch from Firefox. I know you can turn off scripts and block Ad's in Opera, but I like NoScript's whitelist option and installing ABP is about 10x easier than setting up adblocking in Opera. - Gojirra, on 05/23/2008, -0/+9How many good browsers do you think there are out there?
- inactive, on 05/24/2008, -9/+18Two, Firefox, Opera.
- neko, on 05/24/2008, -0/+8elinks!
- phatboye, on 05/24/2008, -1/+9buried for not mentioning konqueror.
- tenjin1, on 05/24/2008, -1/+10Ya it's Firefox with a UI geared towards social networking.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 05/24/2008, -0/+71. Dry humping
- hermslice, on 05/23/2008, -2/+9i work with konqueror and i cant stand it.
give me firefox or give me opera - peestandingup, on 05/24/2008, -0/+7You god damn right! I sure as hell would put it before Sunrise & Shiira, which are basically Safari copies with different skins & options.
- 4321234, on 05/24/2008, -0/+7And seamonkey (used to be mozilla suite)
- Karmavs, on 05/24/2008, -1/+8@Cesclaveria: Forgot about Konqueror. There's a browser that deserves to be in the main article's list.
So that makes four:
Safari, Konqueror, Firefox, Opera. - JimShort, on 05/23/2008, -0/+7Camino = win
- allthosemoments, on 05/24/2008, -1/+8So basically if Opera became more like Firefox?
- cesclaveria, on 05/24/2008, -0/+7Lynx saved me many times while I was learning to use Linux.
And it helps to have some discrete browsing.
Is there any console based browsers that even attempts to handle JavaScript? -
