actually, http://mynoteit.com is listed #10. - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14I'd like to donkey punch that Julia Schopick bitch.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Marked inaccurate. Anything that includes Writely or Google Spreadsheets as a tool for college users must not be thinking about the vast majority of college students.
You know, the ones who need Word or OpenOffice or Excel because of the formatting requirements for their papers/assignments...Writely is especially useless for graduates students, who will actually make use of section headers and tables of contents and indices and all that good stuff.
Google Calendar is okay, but it pales next to Outlook or even Chandler.
Mynoteit is forbidden for a good deal of classes or disciplines because students in those situations aren't allowed to share assignments.
And finally, not all college students give a ***** about blogs, so devoting two spots to that just doesn't make sense. - alphaone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Out of all of them, Google calendar is a must use. With the option to text message me reminders about events I put in, this alone makes Google calendar the most useful calendar application I have ever used. It's a nice way to keep up on assignments, exams, and such, while always being on the move.
- tygern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The reason that Writely and Google calendar are included is that they give the user the ability to access and edit their documents from any computer. OpenOffice.org and Excel are more useful on your own computer, but most college students can appreciate the flexibility that you gain from web apps.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yeah, because Macs now come with a free fax line!!!
Oh wait...eFax is for the fax line, not the ability to receive faxes, which is also built into windows and has been since Me. - tygern, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@samd
Powerpoint isn't free, it's really expensive. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They just changed that, it was firefox before.

- alphaone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and walked uphill both to and from school?
- asurroca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@alphaone:
12 miles to and from...in the snow... lol - victorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So true...Sparknotes.com saved me many times in highschool at least. Next time try to lay off the caps lock though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10It's a good list except none of these tools are specifically geared towards students like http://mynoteit.com or http://facebook.com which in my opinion are more "web tools for students" than firefox or technorati.
- Four20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I know, google offering free web search, free email, free word processor. . .they will get no where in this market.
/more sarcasm - usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2with a baked potato to keep your hands warm and to eat for lunch ?
- victorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I believe since 3.1 Windows has had the ability to recieve faxes, maybe that was a 3rd party program but I remember being able to send and receive faxes in Windows 3.1.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't really use any of these web tools since, like many college students, I have a laptop that I can lug around to almost anywhere.
Technoati and Bloglines are useful for reading random bits of information, though.
The websites that a lot of us go to are Facebook and craigslist. - xblank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You see, delicious is made for tech savvy people who just want to save stuff for themselves. The key difference is that bluedot.us is for groups of friends who want to share what they find interesting.
delicious is for lonely people, and bluedot is for people with friends.
And most college students have friends. - videoCT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wow - a lot has changed in a scant 12 years since I was in college - we used a copy machine to share notes, a floppy disc to store documents, a calendar on the wall as a..er...calendar and study groups took place in person.
- jcs_goog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice list.
- victorp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Umm...right because all college students buy their software
- victorp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4My God why would someone want to charge a fee for a service they offer, that costs the provider money...I can't fathom it. /sarcasm
- loates, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1College students like me use tools that make their lives easier, like online file storage, social networking, etc. Writely only solves one/few inefficiencies for students. I prefer the site below because I can upload any file type to the site and its free (for 5GB). Plus, it integrates with MySpace, Facebook, and all other social networking sites.
http://www.myDataBus.com - buxtor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Be sure to check out http://gradefix.com which is a smart scheduler that can help you decide what to study. It’s web-based so you can use it at home or on campus.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5SPARKNOTES.COM SAVES LIVES!
- samd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This list is plain rubbish. It wouldn't be news to anyone who has ever read TechCrunch or a similar blog.
Writely, and Google Spreadsheets, are not really good enough yet for using. I would recommend LaTeX if you want to produce a nice document for free. Instead of Spreadsheets you would use Excel or Open Office.
Soundslides sounds rubbish. And it costs! Use something free like Thumbstacks or ZohoShow or Powerpoint.
Blue.us - Use del.icio.us. - mckoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lots of reasons why BlueDot.Us instead of del.icio.us:
- You can more easily share your bookmarks (Dots) with friends.
- You can comment and interact with friends about your dots.
- You can share some dots privately with friends, and others can be public
- Dots are more graphically appealing that del.icio.us bookmarks. You can say more, show a thumbmnail, etc.
There is only one application that del.icio.us is better (now): You have a better idea of what the global community thinks about the URL you just bookmarked (and of course, there are more people currently on del.icio.us). But Blue Dot is better for communicating with the people you care about - your friends, family, and co-workers. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1because theres been so many rips of the original it takes away from the concept of "Social note taking" because you can't have a good social network if its split up among many networks
- zlwise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Soundslides is not rubbish, but I don't think it should be on this list. Yes it does cost, but it's primary users are newspaper photographers and it was created by a newspaper photographer. There are a lot of students using it in the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University where I teach.
I agree - Blue.us? WTF, why not del.icio.us? Very odd list. - yankeeboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Deciding when to study is fine, but getting help with the studying is more important. Free sites like www.sparknotes.com and www.college-cram.com can actually help you get ready for tests, unlike timewasters like blogging sites.
- laser61859, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why is websense blocking this site under category "sex?"
- drburk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That list was useless. Writely can't be used to write an assignment, unless they are still in middle school and using MLA they need footnotes to write a paper worth reading. I’ll stick to think free and write good papers.
I was a student for many years and used excel all of once, I couldn't have used Google spreadsheet, it isn't nearly fast enough or easy enough to use.
I haven’t sent a fax in years, can’t be that useful of a tool.
Google Cal, not much good can’t hook up to my palm pilot.
Blogs aren’t much worth reading (this one case in point) what student is going to use blogs. In my school you lost 5 points for every unworthy website you cited. Yeah the poor kid who lost 50 points on a paper.
Soundslides, sounds like an expensive version of what OO can do for me.
Here is the real list.
Books.google.com
Thinkfree.com
Notebook.google.com
Your public library website for access to scholarly journals
foonance.com- not going broke is nice
mayomi.com/ - Map out papers before you screw around writing
only six and I can do everything this list did plus more and I can do it accurately. - asurroca, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I guess the students on Digg were really anxious for something school-related.
I don't get how there's no mention of http://stu.dicio.us Not enough people seem to notice it exists, and it'e great for (simple) note-taking. Unlike Writely, it doesn't aspire to replace your favorite Bloated Office Software (hey, even OpenOffice is bloated)
Note: Web-based is great for note-taking, even simple homework assignments, but you've got to fire up your favorite Bloated Office Software for actual projects. - stisaac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@effektz take 2: Uhhh, about that last comment. I misread you, sorry.
- Four20, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The only one I found remotely interesting that I have never known before was efax. And they want to charge a monthly fee.
Marked as lame. - andymadigan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Grad students should be using LaTeX anyway, so should anyone writing a long paper with exacting requirements. Don't ***** around with weird bugs, use something that does it right the first time when you're writing an 150 page (or significantly longer) paper.
- jragon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Couldn't help but notice the functionality in Soundslides, eFax, and PDF Online all come out of the box with new Macs. But those are very helpful for when I'm stranded on a Windows box.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Spam all dressed up as friendly advice for kids is still spam.

- stisaac, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3@effektz Yeah, that makes perfect sense... Except for the fact that facebook.com isn't listed in this article.
- juliaschopick, on 10/12/2007, -35/+1What a great site/blog! I will keep going back to this one -- even tho I am not a college student. AND, I will try all of the resources listed here.
Thanks much. Julia Schopick (www.honestmedicine.com)
