dugg anyway. - praveenmarkandu, on 10/12/2007, -12/+112snipping tool is not exactly free since you have to pay for a whole OS
- NoOneButMe, on 10/10/2007, -2/+80IrFan View, Foxit, and Blender - possibly ImgBurn as well (used to be DVD Decrypter) arent exactly little known tools. I _know_ FoxIt and Blender have been on Digg before.
- frankinuld, on 10/10/2007, -6/+63"Did you ever see the amazing CGI movies Pixar makes, like Ratatouille? Well, with Blender, you can make similar computer generated graphics that will amaze everyone."
This is like saying "Have you ever seen a painting like Mona Lisa? Well with Crayola crayons you can make similar art." It seems like a great program for what it does, but I haven't seen it put out anything even near production quality. - Bladeweever, on 10/10/2007, -1/+52Dugg for promoting Foxit ... what Adobe Acrobat Reader should have been before it became a bloated whale carcass just waiting to explode on a beach.
- LuckyLefty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+43http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
And it runs on Windows, Linux & Mac. - c0ldfusi0n, on 10/10/2007, -8/+44Buried as Inaccurate. Someone obviously knows about those tools.
- airstrike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35I actually prefer Notepad++ over ConText. I can't think of a single tool/feature I haven't seen on it.
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm - sexybobo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35firefox and vlc are some of the most popular freeware out so it shouldn't be on a list of software no one knows about.
- clubmasta2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30I had no idea DVD Decrypter changed names, lol I never update my software
- yikiad, on 10/10/2007, -4/+30i think someone should come up with a top 10 of top 10 list.
- drmsucks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27Foxit = 10 out of 10; IrfanView = 9 out of 10. Excellent but hardly unknown.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Here are a couple Nobody knows about, but should get immediately.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/supercopier/
http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/ - Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22I call it a Fry hole.
- Kbennett, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Surely that would create a singularity in time space and the world would collapse on itself.
- tidu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24As a Mac user, I don't mind because we've got "Top 10 Unknown Mac Software" lists once a week.
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20ImgBurn used to be DVD Decrypter until it got shutdown. The guy removed all the "nasty bits" and coded what is now THE best image burning software out there from the burning engine that used to be in DVD Decrypter.
- webcrumb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19You want SumatraPDF instead of Foxit. It's much quicker and the PDF engine it uses is more accurate. It's also open source, unlike Foxit.
- Danikar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Sharepod, ConText and AuoHotkey look like great programs. Though, I haven't been completely oblivious to them; I am sure some people have been.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20iTunes is stupid because it requires a Windows system service as well as Quicktime to be resident in memory at all times, even while iTunes is closed. All Apple software is bloated and unfamiliar on Windows. They're far too stubborn with their nonstandard UI conventions.
Windows Media Player 11 has a better interface and uses far fewer resources than iTunes. - stevenbao, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14MusicMatch Jukebox?
Are you serious? - mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Firefox, Mozilla, SeaMonkey, Netscape, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, iCab, Konqueror, Epiphany, Amaya, Camino, Shiira, Lynx, Maxthon, Avant, AOL, Elinks .... now I'm getting tired
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14It is rude to tell people what they know and do not know.
- PlaidPhantom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14That doesn't really say much about Musik Cube...
- nobogeys217, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Hmm. I thought ImgBurn and Blender were pretty popular freeware apps. Especially Blender.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15I can't give Foxit 10/10. I got annoyed that you can't hold Ctrl and use the mouse wheel to zoom, and they still haven't provided Firefox 2.0 embedding support (this is a pro for some and a con for others). I actually just switched back to Adobe Reader and version 9 is way, way faster than the older versions ever were. Foxit was "good enough" until Adobe outpaced it.
- timf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11http://www.elephantsdream.org/
This is probably the movie JCDenton meant
And this is supposed to be not near production quality?? - 60effects, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10AutoHotkey has made the menial aspects of my job much more tolerable. I love it.
- JustinDevine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Can I get a shoutout for Paint.net www.getpaint.net. Its not photoshop, but for simple image editing its excellent.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I like Apple products... but I hate iTunes. Its just too slow and way too bloated.
- goodfellaNW, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Yes, but the key here is it says "Mac" in the title
- tHeSiD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9hmmm
i thought irfanview was popular..
damn..
nice list tho..
autohotkey is good - ghm101, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12ImgBurn looks a lot like DVDdecrypter
not that I have ever used that evil piece of pirating software ever ;) - Radian, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11That's because it didn't.
- akiller, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11I'd take Google's Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ) over IrfanView.
- joshpar, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Hmm... I knew all 10, I must be nobody.
Please... enough of the '... that nobody has heard of ... best ever ... everyone should ...' titles. Digg is a pretty geeky site to go about making assumptions like that.
Yet... I still look at the story... I take it back, keep the titles going! - aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10...but is "free", like Wordpad and Paint. Personally I find Snipping Tool brilliant. and I've been using screengrab apps since W98.
- FreakyT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Windows Live Writer really is a great program.
- SocialPoison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7a META top 10 list? Digg would burst into flames.
- HHP2K, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7wtf are you talking about?
- xenixninja, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7People still use Windows?
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I blame Letterman.
- terminalpariah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Heads up, but you can't use the free Irfanview for commercial purposes. Please support the author!
- squaat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7They are two totally separate beasts. IrfanView is not Picasa. Picasa is a photo album management application irfan view is not. Irfanview allows you to do many things that picasa doesn't. eg: batch conversion, save gifs with transperency, open many different file formats, take screen captures, edit color palettes. etc
Don't get me wrong. I love picasa, but I still use irfanview. It just depends on your needs. - SocialPoison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Your cynicism is well noted, and that's all fine and dandy... but you obviously didn't look into what AutoHotkey does. It's a macro program.... it runs many tasks (such as copy/paste stuff) WITHOUT you being there. That's the point. It can also automate mouse clicks, enter raw text, move/copy/delete files and a slew of other things.
Your reply is dumb. - cfuse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Fantastic, I've been promoted to nobody.
- screensnot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Blender's UI is great. It has a lot to it (necessarily), which is why noobs don't like it. But, it's starts making more and more sense, the more you learn it.
I understand that you are frustrated with it. Using Blender as an image editor would definitely be frustrating. - BruceBogtrotter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7They aren't even the same type of program.
- elementop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's very stable on my Slackware Linux desktop, and has become one of my must-have apps.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Binary a little tough to find for supercopier;
http://supercopier.sfxteam.org/modules/mydownloads/visit.php?cid=1&lid=8
Why MS has never updated the file copy program, (they're still using essentially the same code from Win95), I'll never understand. This replaces it altogether. -
