I think the dupe checking is very, very broke. I havent seen a "duplicate submission" warning in days - gbarberi, on 12/06/2007, -1/+11DriveImageXML is the best. It can even integrate into Bart's PE. I use it at work instead of Norton Ghost. Much cheaper.

- mckinnej, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2Not a bad list. I prefer FreeCommander over TC and Xplorer. It allows me to have one or two panes and lets me integrate it into my system as much as I want. I grew up with Directory Opus on the Amiga, so that's the functionality I expect.
- scott1329m, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2PowerDesk is the best file manager for Windows. I found it many years ago after the old Win 3.1 Norton Desktop file manager was abandoned and used it until I abandoned Windows last year (and still have it in my W2K Virtual Box image). Unfortunately, PD was bought out a couple of times by different companies and has languished in obscurity the past few years, which is why it's not on this list. But if you can find it (does OnTrack still own it?), it's a free download and does everything. The Mac's PathFinder is very similar to PowerDesk. I'm not sure PD is even still for sale, but if you can find a copy, get it and hang onto it in case it disappears for good.

It seems to work pretty well, it's just that when a dupe is found, it gives you the option to submit anyway. So, if you think you're AWESOME headline is better than the LAME headline from the dupe(s), you'll probably submit anyway.
- teh_techie, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1You should try WinBuilder instead of BartPE. I love how the .script files integrate. It seems very smooth to get going, and you can use VistaPE instead of XP's PE.
- TKardinal, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1I long for the days of StupenDOS, actually. I miss being able to select files individually with the spacebar, or tag them by a naming criteria, and then use a keyboard shortcuta to copy/move them to another location.
Oddly enough, my favorite file manager is ACDSee Classic. I just love that program. Alt-M to move files, smart and fast duplicate file detection in the destination, and a full history of previous locations I've moved to, as well as a prompt to create a new directory if I enter a destination that doesn't exist. I've tried a lot of alternatives, and keep going back to it.
Unfortuantely, it's abandoned and doesn't play well with Vista. :( - teh_techie, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Not Xplorer², unfortunately... unless you buy license. YOU may not care, but the person in charge of licensing will...

It doesn't have much in the way of advanced functionality but it's fast, light and provides for a much nicer file management experience in Windows, with features such as tabs, "bread crumbs" and the ability to customise the file manager's UI pretty extensively.
