- TiKoZ, on 10/10/2007, -8/+36What a lame ass article!! 2. Tabbed browsing ?!! omg what a wonderful UNIQUE feature!
Good thing that i'm blocking their ads! - miguelandres, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15On Mac OS X it's an API the developer can choose to use or not, so yes, it's systemwide, but only if your developer is smart enough... Though I don't really like it because I write in Spanish and English all the time and the OS will inevitably show a lot of errors on one or the other
- MrSarcasm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Yeah but as they don't require anything and work by default... aren't hey like, you know... nothing that needs an article?
It's like, OMG, FEATURE #1 - It BROWSES the Internet. Some may not know, but that's why it's called a "browser". - lengau, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18I still laugh at inline spell check being a feature of Firefox. It really should be standard in all text fields.
Unfortunately, no desktop does this completely. Contrary to what Mac fanboys will tell you, Mac doesn't have system-wide spell check. They have spell check for *most* text boxes. Neither does KDE (only KTextEdit [and perhaps KLineEdit/QTextEdit, I'm not sure] widgets have spell check, which is all KDE apps, but not all apps you might run in KDE). - cmp1988, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I still say that "about:config" is the greatest Firefox feature that doesn't require an add-on. With that little command you type in the address bar, you get almost total control over your Firefox browser; the tool, if used in the right hands, can work wonders for your browsing experience.
- Hipple, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Maybe I'm not on the cutting edge, but I would rather just use my mouse and click on the digg bookmark in my bookmarks toolbar than create a digg bookmarklet. that's cool and all, but isn't the bookmarks toolbar there for a reason?
on the bright side, i did learn a couple of cool things. next knew ctrl-tab switched between tabs, although i feel dumb for not figuring it out sooner. - Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Well, it *is* kind hard to tell from that information alone, since quite a few browser does that, so it's good that you told us.
- doublsh0t, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6what is this so-called "tabbed browsing" they speak of??
- archlich, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So go edit aspell.
- superalamar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4And some products (MSN Messenger) stubbornly refuse to use it and offer no alternative, which is very annoying. Firefox's spell check leaves something to be desired on all platforms. Still nice to have though.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yes... just type an email or whatever in Spanish and then click Add 300 times!
- Zalyster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Add spanish and english words to the dictionary...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3right so top 10 firefox features that dont require extensions, most of which are availible on other browsers except spell checker, which you have to download a extension to use...
which makes it an extension so shouldn't be on the list
marked as inaccurate due to it having extensions listed - TenebrousX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I acidentally closed multiple tabs, so I went to the trash can in Opera and restored them. Then I couldn't remember which I wanted to see, so I cascaded them all and saw them visually. Of course, I could have just hovered over their tab and seen a live preview.
- systemghost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Top 10 Firefox features that don't require extensions....
Keyworded Bookmark article points to a guide that says:
"If you're using Firefox, first things first: You need to install the OpenBook Firefox extension. Yes, you need to - you can add keywords to your bookmarks in Firefox without OpenBook, but it's decidedly more of a pain in the ass, requiring a trip to the properties of each bookmark. OpenBook makes adding keywords to bookmarks trivial, meaning you'll be much more likely to set them up."
Okay...? - doublsh0t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ctrl+w is my most often used one i think (closes the current tab)
- Wootery, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Even then, you'd be more likely to miss typos.
- alivesurf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Should be renamed to: "If you don't know anything about Firefox, read this"
- rowlodge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2only used it for a week but found out you could download movies without being a paid member on some sites, tickled me, actually an add on application but cool.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think this is the single most valuable thing said here. Everyone treats Firefox as being a chunk and expects everything to be editable through a GUI, but in reality, there's a _lot_ of data underneath the hood that's simply infeasable to display most of the time. In most every other browser, you don't have access to these parameters. You can't change how fast the page renders or when it starts to render, you can't enable and disable certain parts of Javascript at your will, you can't change how the network stack is used, but you can with Firefox.
The biggest problem with Firefox right now is finding reasonable defaults, and doing so pragmatically instead of blanket defaults; some systems are faster than others, some systems have more memory and some have less, and Firefox needs to learn to detect these things and set itself up accordingly.
[And I really wouldn't mind it one bit if they broke out some of the things that used to be extensions, back /into/ extensions that are installed by default, and therefore user removable]. - astrotrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1...they'll think of Digging you down...
- davidhildreth, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6the memory leaks are built-in right?
- Vich, on 10/10/2007, -10/+11The memory usage/leaking is a pretty cool feature of Firefox. It doesn't need any extensions to work, but they can help.
- superalamar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Undo close tab can be done even better from the history menu where it lets you pick a specific formerly open tab.
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that would be a keyword, a bookmarklet is a bookmark with a javascript uri
- Haplo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Better article on smart keywords: http://johnbokma.com/firefox/keymarks-explained.html
One up ( http://johnbokma.com/firefox/ ) gives some more articles with tips. Especially disabling the "find in page sound" :-D - danc4498, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My all time favorite is the find as you type feature. I use this so much, and yet it's turned off by default for some reason.
- Zalyster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But, aren't search engines technically extensions...?
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can place a bookmarklet in your bookmarks toolbar, no problem.
You could use keywords for bookmarks when you want to add additional parameters. - TypeEE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2May be most of the Textfield are not used for sentances but were used for names, address, and other info that spell check doesn't make sense
- Jammerdelray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I expected more from lifehacker! Here we are going to tell you about everything that already comes standard with firefox lol
- TypeEE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey, they missed "In browser incremental search" IE's is not incremental and it's a pop up which is very annoying. This could have been one of my top 10 reason that I use firefox
- Zalyster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What do you know? I'm using that right now!
- Zalyster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I type in g x and do an image search for x. ;)
- whiskeyboarder, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I'm hardly tech savvy; this was news to me - deserves to be Dugg. Thanks
- KLikLo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0The fox is the shiznit
- blogDot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0these are good features.. i have already used most of them and is a part of my daily web surfing
- jizzle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Typos aside, maybe people should just learn to ***** spell so that you aren't dealing with the false positives whenever you use a word not in it's dictionary.
- jayfixx, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3I don't see ANY suggestion of the word 'unique' in the title.
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2It's an alright article. Since I visit digg news and digg videos so often, I should probably get around to making a bookmarklet for them, so all I have to do is type in g and I come directly here.
- rlahiff, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5oh come on - i thought this was a clever comment
- chogie, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2I wanted to reply to your comment but accidentally closed this tab, all I had to do right click and undo close tab. I also made a typo, something weird happened though, and this red line showed up and spelled my word correctly. If you cant tell I'm on Firefox
- TrainingName, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Holy mother of God!
A story about Firefox productivity that ISN'T about extensions!!!!!1
What'll they think of next? - phlogiston99, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2Dugg just for "top 10"
Because we all definitely need more lists. - Diggtatorship, on 10/10/2007, -13/+8"Top 10 Firefox features that don't require extensions" doesn't hold a candle to what you can do WITH extensions.
I hate to say it, but if you don't have at least 10 extensions then you should be using Opera instead. - MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -10/+1I hate the spell check that came with Firefox. It is very inaccurate and sometimes even misspells words.

What is Digg?
