If you actually looked at nlite it actually requires a real version of windows xp, and a cd-key to work, it just takes your install disc, and removes stuff that is installed and automates it and burns the new install setup on it. This way you can install windows xp without any of the bloat you may not need. You still need to own a valid XP license, so no use crying afoul without checking things out.
And tinyxp says to use your own cd-key, so it stays on the up and up, so while still somewhat less legit, it isn't bypassing the need to own a valid win xp license. - apzdsx, on 11/06/2007, -3/+48For those interested in customizing their Windows installation, use nlite: http://www.nliteos.com/download.html
It's very user-friendly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40link to the newer torrent, from 2006, not 2005.

- bedlam, on 11/07/2007, -4/+24On the site he mentions that microsoft office will work with tinyxp which, for me at least, is a deal breaker.
btw here's the main part of the text:
Thank you for you interest in this stripped out (112Mb)
Edition of XP. I clocked mine in Task Manager
using only 39.5Mb of RAM. Windows XP usually uses
300Mb of RAM at the very least. This "TinyXP" not only
runs fast, but takes up only 400Mb total space on your
system hard drive. Thats the "WINDOWS" folder, "Documents
and settings" and "Program Files"
By using only 40Mb of RAM, this allows
your PC to run fast, I mean VERY fast!
All important hardware drivers and other essentials
have been kept in this release - You have joystick
support, printer support and other bare essentials.
"Microsoft SideWinder" support has been left in.
NOTE: You cannot use Microsoft Office with
this tiny edition of Windows XP. You still have
one Microsoft application left in Windows - MS
Paint. The Calculator is gone, as is Wordpad.
GONE is that nasty Internet Explorer, it does not
exist in this Edition! Whats nice about this TinyXP
is this... When this XP has installed, (the
install takes just six minutes) you will have a
link on the "Start Menu" under "Programs" to a
standalone internet browser that takes up only
358Kb on the CD... This "OffByOne" browser is a
great space saving alternative to the usual
browsers everyone uses. Because WinRAR is also
installed with this TinyXP, it is easy to click
the browser shortcut in the "Start Menu" and simply
drag the file "OB1.exe" out of WinRAR and to any
directory you choose. This really is a "standalone"
internet browser, would work even on Windows 95
and possibly as far back as Windows 3.11. This
browser does not require I.E. or any of the DLL or
OCX files I.E. would be using. Hats off to OffByOne!
Also included is a standalone BitTorrent client,
uTorrent. This tiny BT client is only 105Kb!
All the programs included use "nearly zero" resources.
Windows Media Player is NOT included at all in this install.
You will have to grab some kind of player from somewhere
if you want to play movies and audio files. To play WMV
or WMA files you will probably have to install some version
of the proper "Windows Media Player". It is OK in most cases
to then uninstall it and it will leave behind those essential
files that were missing, neat trick, but hey we don't want
this crap on our system! Things like this just slow it down!
GONE also are all Windows noises like startup and
shutdown noises, but audio DOES work. You cannot
use Microsoft Office, but you DO have support if
you want to install a printer... you can see below
what devices are supported in TinyXP. - Fordi, on 11/07/2007, -3/+23Been using 'Beast Edition' since its unholy release date (6/6/06).
Benefits: Fast system, Firefox built in. No keying. Auto install.
Caveats: Missing parts (no disk partitioner?), it's made for GB (I don't want google.co.uk! And why do the symbols on my keyboard not match?!), no video support (quick trip to mplayerhq.hu solved that).
Overall... well, I'm still using it, aren't I? - Cymrubeats, on 11/07/2007, -3/+23So...fill me in here. Is it 100% operational? What is missing, what do i sacrifice? I can't load the site btw, so the wee description up there doesn't help in the least.
- ziadoz, on 11/07/2007, -1/+20No you know us Brits feel installing Windows XP, always having to change the settings to GB or we find our keys won't work properly.
- guregu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18http://duggmirror.com/software/TinyXP_55Mb_WinXP_client/
- dougbarrett, on 11/07/2007, -1/+17The reason your keys dont match is because you haven't changed the Regional settings in the control panel. The default settings for the keyboard are United Kingdom, but you can easily change it to the United States settings to get the correct functionality of your keys back
- Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I appreciate that some people have to use or prefer XP, so we are creating a version of Puppy for you guys (in Alpha). We also have the Xpuppy Professional which uses Open Office. That is about 180MB
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppyXP - alexdagrate, on 11/07/2007, -0/+13Lots of people use this on the Mac for parallels. This is a bit extreme, but hey, XP is definitely bloated.
- concreteclam, on 11/07/2007, -0/+12Something worth noting is that this apparently doesn't work with laptops or any other "battery powered computer".
"Q: Can I install TinyXP on a laptop?
A: No, hardware support has been removed for any battery powered PC"
Also, scanners and digital cameras will not work, either.
"This Edition does not support the installing/plugging in of any scanners or video capture devices (webcams/digital cameras)" - Libb, on 11/07/2007, -1/+13This screams to be put on a thumbdrive - imagine having your own personal install of Windows, with all of your necessary apps (Firefox, uTorrent, maybe WinAmp and a few dozen song files), on a keychain thumb drive that you can plug into a public computer and run with a simple reboot. Also would be great for troubleshooting (who needs an MS-DOS boot disk? Just boot your stripped down XP drive and fix it from there!)
- MrNate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Well, consider that the requirements for Win XP is 1.5 GB to install and 128MB of RAM. If you own a heavily underpowered machine, TinyXP sounds like a very nice option.
- Lane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13the FILE SIZE ON THE CD is 110megs the RAM USAGE is sub50 at idle.
- bluemist, on 11/07/2007, -3/+13It could be useful if it can be a gaming OS.
Any DX9 or video card support in this one? - Hellman109, on 11/07/2007, -5/+15Sounds like he went nuts with Nlite and now claims that all the work is his and his alone, and he's VERY paranoid!
Windows XP minus everything people use Windows XP for, great work... *COUGH*.
BartsPE is a much better way to go for recovery, this has no use really.
The download is 102MB too, installs to 400MB, so says the NFO, - igutekunst, on 11/07/2007, -4/+13The torrent is hella fast BTW. I'm getting 500KBps. No one cares, so digg me down.
Edit: and port forwarding isn't even set up right. oops. - DownWithTheMan, on 11/13/2007, -2/+11Why get Rev1 or 2, Tiny XP is up to Rev5 now...
http://www.btmon.com/Applications/Unsorted/TinyXP_Rev05_ISO_by_eXPerience.torrent.html - RootWebGod, on 11/07/2007, -2/+10There's no need to keep using the deprecated (outdated) releases. :)
Here's a better way to find the latest TinyXP:
http://thepiratebay.org/search.php?q=TinyXP
Note: Only the releases by "eXPerience33" are "official."
Personally, I still prefer nLite which allows you to do the customizations yourself.
http://www.nliteos.com/ - Timit, on 11/07/2007, -2/+10Gri, you meant boot off USB? I don't seem to have any 1GB floppy lying around...
- rm999, on 11/07/2007, -1/+8pbjorge12
He states that laptops are not supported - extreme101, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6i use this on my second pc, pentium 3 733mhz 192mb ram. runs really nice, much better than 98 or xp.
great for a basic pc. - dougbarrett, on 11/07/2007, -11/+17TinyXP has been around for a LONG time. I dont know how this is front page news.
Like the guy said, it's pirated software.
And BTW, the reason it is so small is because it has no printer operations, extended networking capabilities, it loses all visual elements to XP among other things.
If you really want a stripped down version of XP, do it the way they did it, but use your own copy. That way it is legal, and you get the satisfaction of DIY. The link to the program they use any many other people use is http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html - fluffyturtle, on 11/07/2007, -2/+8Only problem is that these programs typically thrash the install. I tried roughly ~10 times to get xplite to properly strip the OS down and I finally had to give up. Hopefully the newer versions are better...
- pbjorge12, on 11/07/2007, -8/+13I have tried this on a couple Sony Laptops and on all of them it failed to discover the PCMCIA slots - which was a deal breaker for me so I just got a regular pirated copy :p...
It is nice but I don't recommend it because lots of services are just GONE - Not disabled but actually removed from the install so certain applications like Mozy just can't work... - Echelon, on 11/07/2007, -2/+7Takes forever to get to the bloody link, then you have to REGISTER to look!? SCREW THAT!
- luciferin, on 11/07/2007, -1/+6Also, the same Windows install can't load on vastly different hardware. It just freaks out and locks you out of the system.
- StarManta, on 11/07/2007, -2/+6uTorrent is included. It would be great for turning an old PC into a dedicated torrent box.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5In one release he has "WS_FTP"
On another recent release he has "MSN Messanger".
... it seems nobody knows what's good... I'll stick with making my own thanks. - OOTay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i would like this for my benchmarking on poc, and i think if you have a heavily under powered pc i would just use linux instead.
- Gir53457, on 11/07/2007, -3/+6Problem is that the motherboard itself has to be able to boot off the floppy.
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -3/+6i don't see any reason to use this at all... it says office doesn't work. who knows what other apps wont work. the only reason to use windows over linux is compatibility, and this basically removes that from windows. great job at rebuilding a car without an engine and wheels.
- xeigen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Cruelapollo
I hope that was a joke because its obvious by the name that System Idle Process does nothing. It isnt actually needlessly using all those cycles its just using whats left of the CPU time to do absolutely nothing. Its there i think to tell you how much of the system is idle.
You will notice that whenever a process starts using CPU time the usage of System Idle Process goes down. - inactive, on 11/06/2007, -1/+4benchmarking your mom perhaps?
- newwatch51, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2Or you could do this legally in Linux and get a far more stable and compatible system.
- carbontwelve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2replacement
- CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Info about TinyXP Vista Edition Removed Components
Some components have been removed from this edition of TinyXP, this
is for a number of reasons - Windows swells up when SP2 and 100 Hotfixes
are integrated, the driver packs are 255Mb, the Vista theme is 30Mb,
WindowBlinds (to run the Vista theme) is 20Mb, Software (see folder) is
35Mb and so on. Despite this, no drivers (like Scanners, printers, digital
cameras) have been removed, none of the hardware support has been removed
either, this is in essence... a fully functional version of XP that has
support for SATA and all known LAN cards, but it fits on a 700Mb CD.

- socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Rapid Share sucks... If a software update to save my life was only on Rapid Share Id pass it up
Damn kidney dialisis machines always needin updated... :P - 0v3rk1ll, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4GNU/Linux is better. There, I said it.
- pmshah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is for clean fresh install only. It cannot upgrade existing OS.
- d00ter, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1I'm personally using TinyXP Revision 0.06. It is amazing. So fast. Perfect for gaming. You may not have things such as Microsoft Office, or other things, but you can find substitutes.
Or you can manually install them yourself.
Its amazing, and I've had no problems in the 6 months I've had it. - pmshah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Version 04 was a big letdown from version 03. I think one can go overboard in reducing the installation size. I don't think I am going to even bother checking out the version 05.
What one can do is study the wpi scripts & the included software. Remove, add customize to your heart's content. What one can do is add the extra folders in the release to your original CD. Make necessary changes to the winnt.sif & strip out the non required software. If nothing else it will save you a lot of hassles. - code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I installed TinyXP after reading about it here.
The hardware was: P3 700, GeForce 256 AGP, SB AWE64 ISA, 256MB
Previous OS's: Win98SE, Ubuntu 6.1
The setup uses the Windows PE route for installation.
The Install disc seems to have a problem because it was throwing a fatal error after not finding some SP2 files in the asms folder. This is easily fixed by putting in a setup cd containing SP2 integrated, at the right time during install.
All the hardware works. I had to update the video drivers and change the keyboard region.
After installing SAV 10 and Zonealarm 6.5 Free, memory usage was at around 120 of 256 MB.
Only thing I miss is the remote desktop server (terminal server seems to have been left out). "radmin" is a good alternative.
Windows update does not seem to work, but it passes WGA. - steveb99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can anybody tell me how if it's possible to use file sharing under rev5? I can't seem to even share my C root directory.
TinyXP makes a brilliant base for a PVR. - fsapo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5this thing is EVIL!
It made me drop ubuntu and go back to XP :( - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3hello moron.. please stay away from the computer for your own safety.
- kevyn, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1damn, I was so close to installing this on an old laptop
