If you actually looked at nlite it actually requires a real version of windows xp, and a cd-key to work, it just takes your install disc, and removes stuff that is installed and automates it and burns the new install setup on it. This way you can install windows xp without any of the bloat you may not need. You still need to own a valid XP license, so no use crying afoul without checking things out.
And tinyxp says to use your own cd-key, so it stays on the up and up, so while still somewhat less legit, it isn't bypassing the need to own a valid win xp license. - OOTay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i would like this for my benchmarking on poc, and i think if you have a heavily under powered pc i would just use linux instead.
- Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I appreciate that some people have to use or prefer XP, so we are creating a version of Puppy for you guys (in Alpha). We also have the Xpuppy Professional which uses Open Office. That is about 180MB
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppyXP - DownWithTheMan, on 11/13/2007, -2/+10Why get Rev1 or 2, Tiny XP is up to Rev5 now...

Anyways, I am definitely doing this, seems like a great thing! - oak415, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Good Idea.. but not exactly what I'm looking for. Was searchin for a copy of WinXP w/SP2 and stumbled across this TinyXP concept ever since Microsoft released the dreaded Genuine Windows Validation to their updates site.
Anyway.. my gripe with this is why the hell would you remove IE 6.0? I actually use Firefox in conjunction with IE and find my Internet Explorer 6 to be faster at loading pages and simple. Sure before Service pack 2 it was vulnerable to alot of accidental installs of Spyware/Adware but c'mon leave it in there.. Give us the option to not use it. And from reading all the other posts about how it does not give laptop support. I think that is the major flaw. Laptops are what would benefit most from a smaller stripped OS.
On the otherhand.. i do have a 6 year old Intel Pentium III with 512 MB Ram I might consider installing this TinyXP on purely for Sh!ts and giggles. Those of you pressed for time I would skip this. But if anyone knows something similair to this TinyXP I would love any inputs.
- pmuse, on 10/26/2007, -156/+10Good to know digg is becoming a source for pirated software.
- Cymrubeats, on 11/07/2007, -3/+22So...fill me in here. Is it 100% operational? What is missing, what do i sacrifice? I can't load the site btw, so the wee description up there doesn't help in the least.
- bedlam, on 11/07/2007, -4/+22On the site he mentions that microsoft office will work with tinyxp which, for me at least, is a deal breaker.
btw here's the main part of the text:
Thank you for you interest in this stripped out (112Mb)
Edition of XP. I clocked mine in Task Manager
using only 39.5Mb of RAM. Windows XP usually uses
300Mb of RAM at the very least. This "TinyXP" not only
runs fast, but takes up only 400Mb total space on your
system hard drive. Thats the "WINDOWS" folder, "Documents
and settings" and "Program Files"
By using only 40Mb of RAM, this allows
your PC to run fast, I mean VERY fast!
All important hardware drivers and other essentials
have been kept in this release - You have joystick
support, printer support and other bare essentials.
"Microsoft SideWinder" support has been left in.
NOTE: You cannot use Microsoft Office with
this tiny edition of Windows XP. You still have
one Microsoft application left in Windows - MS
Paint. The Calculator is gone, as is Wordpad.
GONE is that nasty Internet Explorer, it does not
exist in this Edition! Whats nice about this TinyXP
is this... When this XP has installed, (the
install takes just six minutes) you will have a
link on the "Start Menu" under "Programs" to a
standalone internet browser that takes up only
358Kb on the CD... This "OffByOne" browser is a
great space saving alternative to the usual
browsers everyone uses. Because WinRAR is also
installed with this TinyXP, it is easy to click
the browser shortcut in the "Start Menu" and simply
drag the file "OB1.exe" out of WinRAR and to any
directory you choose. This really is a "standalone"
internet browser, would work even on Windows 95
and possibly as far back as Windows 3.11. This
browser does not require I.E. or any of the DLL or
OCX files I.E. would be using. Hats off to OffByOne!
Also included is a standalone BitTorrent client,
uTorrent. This tiny BT client is only 105Kb!
All the programs included use "nearly zero" resources.
Windows Media Player is NOT included at all in this install.
You will have to grab some kind of player from somewhere
if you want to play movies and audio files. To play WMV
or WMA files you will probably have to install some version
of the proper "Windows Media Player". It is OK in most cases
to then uninstall it and it will leave behind those essential
files that were missing, neat trick, but hey we don't want
this crap on our system! Things like this just slow it down!
GONE also are all Windows noises like startup and
shutdown noises, but audio DOES work. You cannot
use Microsoft Office, but you DO have support if
you want to install a printer... you can see below
what devices are supported in TinyXP. - pbjorge12, on 11/07/2007, -8/+13I have tried this on a couple Sony Laptops and on all of them it failed to discover the PCMCIA slots - which was a deal breaker for me so I just got a regular pirated copy :p...
It is nice but I don't recommend it because lots of services are just GONE - Not disabled but actually removed from the install so certain applications like Mozy just can't work... - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Ah. I'll keep hold of the bloat for now then. Saying that, i still have around 150GB of free space left on my drives, so i'm not exactly running short yet. :P
- rm999, on 11/07/2007, -1/+7pbjorge12
He states that laptops are not supported
- bedlam, on 11/07/2007, -4/+22On the site he mentions that microsoft office will work with tinyxp which, for me at least, is a deal breaker.
- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -23/+4"(~110Mb total file size)"
so how the ***** is this 55megs? the rar files are 110+ and the thing installs out to 400megs.
wtf is so tiny about that?- MrNate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Well, consider that the requirements for Win XP is 1.5 GB to install and 128MB of RAM. If you own a heavily underpowered machine, TinyXP sounds like a very nice option.
- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -20/+4hah, so just because normally xp is an insane resource consuming mongrel of a thing they decieded to call this slightly less resource eating mamoth "tiny"?
and it still doesn't answer where the hell they came up with "55meg" - Lane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13the FILE SIZE ON THE CD is 110megs the RAM USAGE is sub50 at idle.
- Fordi, on 11/07/2007, -3/+23Been using 'Beast Edition' since its unholy release date (6/6/06).
Benefits: Fast system, Firefox built in. No keying. Auto install.
Caveats: Missing parts (no disk partitioner?), it's made for GB (I don't want google.co.uk! And why do the symbols on my keyboard not match?!), no video support (quick trip to mplayerhq.hu solved that).
Overall... well, I'm still using it, aren't I?- dougbarrett, on 11/07/2007, -1/+15The reason your keys dont match is because you haven't changed the Regional settings in the control panel. The default settings for the keyboard are United Kingdom, but you can easily change it to the United States settings to get the correct functionality of your keys back
- ziadoz, on 11/07/2007, -1/+18No you know us Brits feel installing Windows XP, always having to change the settings to GB or we find our keys won't work properly.
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1That's where nlite comes in handy again :)
You can change the default settings for language, time zone etc.
- dougbarrett, on 11/07/2007, -10/+16TinyXP has been around for a LONG time. I dont know how this is front page news.
Like the guy said, it's pirated software.
And BTW, the reason it is so small is because it has no printer operations, extended networking capabilities, it loses all visual elements to XP among other things.
If you really want a stripped down version of XP, do it the way they did it, but use your own copy. That way it is legal, and you get the satisfaction of DIY. The link to the program they use any many other people use is http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html- fluffyturtle, on 11/07/2007, -2/+8Only problem is that these programs typically thrash the install. I tried roughly ~10 times to get xplite to properly strip the OS down and I finally had to give up. Hopefully the newer versions are better...
- bluemist, on 11/07/2007, -3/+13It could be useful if it can be a gaming OS.
Any DX9 or video card support in this one?- burnstyle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2when i used this i could not get ANY game to function properly
everything froze
i would not recommend using this for anything other than a very very slow computer - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -3/+4i don't see any reason to use this at all... it says office doesn't work. who knows what other apps wont work. the only reason to use windows over linux is compatibility, and this basically removes that from windows. great job at rebuilding a car without an engine and wheels.
- StarManta, on 11/07/2007, -1/+6uTorrent is included. It would be great for turning an old PC into a dedicated torrent box.
- burnstyle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2when i used this i could not get ANY game to function properly
- HatchedEggs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Bleh, the site isn't holding up too well I think To bad, would have been interesting to read more about it. The first post that has the link had a little more info... guess I'll have to go dig up some more though.
I'd say that getting the OS into such a compressed package was great... but I'm not sure exactly what the specs are for it.
Ahh, okay, site finally popped up from the link. Any specifics for it? Any screen pics? Some new links up now and I think those have the information. Thanks for the links! - Hellman109, on 11/07/2007, -5/+15Sounds like he went nuts with Nlite and now claims that all the work is his and his alone, and he's VERY paranoid!
Windows XP minus everything people use Windows XP for, great work... *COUGH*.
BartsPE is a much better way to go for recovery, this has no use really.
The download is 102MB too, installs to 400MB, so says the NFO,- noisey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Thats exactly what this is. Some kid used nlite to stupidly strip everything out of XP. Then he puts it on the net. Dont waste your time on this crap. Or just get nlite and do it yourself. Anyone with half a brain can use nlite.
- d00ter, on 01/09/2008, -0/+1I'm personally using TinyXP Revision 0.06. It is amazing. So fast. Perfect for gaming. You may not have things such as Microsoft Office, or other things, but you can find substitutes.
Or you can manually install them yourself.
Its amazing, and I've had no problems in the 6 months I've had it.
- concreteclam, on 11/07/2007, -0/+12Something worth noting is that this apparently doesn't work with laptops or any other "battery powered computer".
"Q: Can I install TinyXP on a laptop?
A: No, hardware support has been removed for any battery powered PC"
Also, scanners and digital cameras will not work, either.
"This Edition does not support the installing/plugging in of any scanners or video capture devices (webcams/digital cameras)"- kevyn, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1damn, I was so close to installing this on an old laptop
- Libb, on 11/07/2007, -0/+12This screams to be put on a thumbdrive - imagine having your own personal install of Windows, with all of your necessary apps (Firefox, uTorrent, maybe WinAmp and a few dozen song files), on a keychain thumb drive that you can plug into a public computer and run with a simple reboot. Also would be great for troubleshooting (who needs an MS-DOS boot disk? Just boot your stripped down XP drive and fix it from there!)
- Gir53457, on 11/07/2007, -1/+6Problem is that the motherboard itself has to be able to boot off the floppy.
- Timit, on 11/07/2007, -1/+9Gri, you meant boot off USB? I don't seem to have any 1GB floppy lying around...
- luciferin, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6Also, the same Windows install can't load on vastly different hardware. It just freaks out and locks you out of the system.
- alexdagrate, on 11/07/2007, -0/+13Lots of people use this on the Mac for parallels. This is a bit extreme, but hey, XP is definitely bloated.
- igutekunst, on 11/07/2007, -4/+13The torrent is hella fast BTW. I'm getting 500KBps. No one cares, so digg me down.
Edit: and port forwarding isn't even set up right. oops. - burkay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Not for daily use.
But a good option for benchmarking and VMing.- rabidstrike, on 11/06/2007, -1/+3benchmarking your mom perhaps?
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3This is so illegal on so many levels.
Sure, you have to have a "legal" key to install it, but the packaging is a legal nightmare.
Go go super light GNU/Linux distros to the rescue. - PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1From what i'm reading its NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR XP! so every one be easy its just ah stripped down version i guess for people who just want to run...i dont know ah server with some XP functions. It seems to be ah pretty nice program. Why is every one fighting?
- RootWebGod, on 11/07/2007, -2/+10There's no need to keep using the deprecated (outdated) releases. :)

- xeigen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Cruelapollo
I hope that was a joke because its obvious by the name that System Idle Process does nothing. It isnt actually needlessly using all those cycles its just using whats left of the CPU time to do absolutely nothing. Its there i think to tell you how much of the system is idle.
You will notice that whenever a process starts using CPU time the usage of System Idle Process goes down.

Some components have been removed from this edition of TinyXP, this
is for a number of reasons - Windows swells up when SP2 and 100 Hotfixes
are integrated, the driver packs are 255Mb, the Vista theme is 30Mb,
WindowBlinds (to run the Vista theme) is 20Mb, Software (see folder) is
35Mb and so on. Despite this, no drivers (like Scanners, printers, digital
cameras) have been removed, none of the hardware support has been removed
either, this is in essence... a fully functional version of XP that has
support for SATA and all known LAN cards, but it fits on a 700Mb CD.

- NismoDrift, on 11/11/2007, -7/+2linux, wow you guys like to keep saying linux is better, you know what I know windows has its faults buts it a heck of a lot more better than linux I mean come on Im a gamer and so far all I've seen about 80 percent of the games windows only no linux support no mac support its like having an unleaded fuel car with diesel fuel in it, its not going to work. I agree Windows is crap it crashes alot, but that is because they rush there products so as every other company and linux is free but also crappy I hate linux it sucks theres nothing really I see a normal user that would be able to use it over windows. Mac overpriced there I said it 2000 dollars for a damn desktop that would be worth 500 dollars if it was a windows pc but jus cuz it has the apple sign it is awesome. I am a hater of everything but Windows is better for overall usability. And I dare anyone to tell me how much better Linux is over Windows besides using the word viruses, cuz viruses can easily be made for any os jus not many people want a mac or linux, most people take windows so of course windows does get viruses cuz its popular. I bet you wont get no where. Go ahead I dare you to email me nismodrift@gmail.com or instant message me on aim under screenname monosuicide21.
- pmshah, on 11/11/2007, -2/+2There is a big difference in games for windows & Linux. You practically have no decent free games for windows & no paid for games for Linux. Now you tell me which company has interest in developing games that will probably never sell. Same holds true for hardware driver support.
Now if you talk about BSD you might have better options. - NormalDave, on 12/07/2007, -0/+0Hi. Nice to see you hate everything that you don't understand. I am a Linux user. Allow me to say that I agree 100% that Windows is the way to go for PC gaming. I notice you also said that it crashes a lot because they rush their products. Bravo. But, it isn't just because of the rush. A lot of it has to do with memory usage and the like. But, I just wanted to tell you that you are 100% correct. If all you want to do with a computer is play games, Windows is the way.
Likewise, if you want to do work with your computer and not have to worry about a random rundll32 error, go with Linux, FreeBSD, or Apple OS.
As for the virus thing, I wasn't going to mention it, but I'd like it to be explained as a bit more than just "lack of interest" by malware developers. It seems to me that these developers would have a much more fun time watching bank and government computers be infected. Wouldn't it make sense for them to attack Unix in one manner or another? Viruses don't happen because of the source being available, for one thing. Many eyes get to look over the code and examine the program. If something stupid is noticed, the community is alerted. Another reason is that most *nix distributions have repositories for commonly used software. Almost (if not completely) everything you would ever want to run is in the repository somewhere. When you use only the "official" repositories, your software is safe.
The fact that there are so many different directory structures is a help. Plus, for almost any task there are multiple programs available to the user. If you're working with databases, you could go with mysql, sqlite, postgresql, et cetera. Making a virus that attacks all Linux/Unix/BSD computers would be very difficult.
Then, we also have the user permissions and what-not. But, I'm not going to go any further with this. You're right. Windows is better for games. For everything else, I don't know why anyone would bother with Windows.

- zhulien, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I also cannot stand using Linux (even though I run a Linux Server). To use it as a desktop would be just too painful. Windows is terrible also, but not as painful as linux. My preferred OS is awaiting a firefox port which I pray will be within a year or two :) MorphOS that is. That is a small OS, 100mb is not small for an OS, that is bloated. Why do all the Linux people insist on sticking bundles of apps into the OS. If I want the apps, I'd get them separately. Yeah, I know I don't need to install them, but why even have them in the distribution in the first place.
- pmshah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Why don't you try Puppy Linux Live on multisession CD? It is only a 65 MB download & runs off of the CD itself. Does not even need a hdd. Will save all the settings. downloads, installed software on the same CD. I use it on a 200 MB cd-rw & carry it it in my pocket. 95% of required functionality is included. Will run on practically any machine you come across.

TinyXP makes a brilliant base for a PVR. - pmshah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Version 04 was a big letdown from version 03. I think one can go overboard in reducing the installation size. I don't think I am going to even bother checking out the version 05.
What one can do is study the wpi scripts & the included software. Remove, add customize to your heart's content. What one can do is add the extra folders in the release to your original CD. Make necessary changes to the winnt.sif & strip out the non required software. If nothing else it will save you a lot of hassles. - code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I installed TinyXP after reading about it here.
The hardware was: P3 700, GeForce 256 AGP, SB AWE64 ISA, 256MB
Previous OS's: Win98SE, Ubuntu 6.1
The setup uses the Windows PE route for installation.
The Install disc seems to have a problem because it was throwing a fatal error after not finding some SP2 files in the asms folder. This is easily fixed by putting in a setup cd containing SP2 integrated, at the right time during install.
All the hardware works. I had to update the video drivers and change the keyboard region.
After installing SAV 10 and Zonealarm 6.5 Free, memory usage was at around 120 of 256 MB.
Only thing I miss is the remote desktop server (terminal server seems to have been left out). "radmin" is a good alternative.
Windows update does not seem to work, but it passes WGA. - jruo, on 11/26/2007, -14/+0Cheapest and the best data recovery service in the world.
