Hi. I can do this for you next week, when I plan on taking a break from a nonotech based / atomic fission driven search engine thats going to make larry page wet his pants. 6 days to code, 1 to rest. It will be written from scratch and completely original in design, so don't worry about copyright bs. I plan to write the entire OS in C, and blindfolded, if its all the same to you. 100% secure will not be a problem either...In fact the OS will be designed to leverage jedi mind tricks to kill anyone that even thinks about breaking in. (i was thinking maybe make them chop off their feet and jump up and down until their empty would be fair). Anyways, I'm gonna smoke some more crack, maybe you should do the same. Thanks! - ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39$1000-$3000 hahahahahahahahaha *breathe* hahahahahahahahha with all the features of XP hahahahahahhaha
- Sanitarium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I can do a bit of HTML... Need any help?
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14this HAS to be a spoof. it just has to be...
i really cant believe people are so utterly dumb. on second thoughts - maybe they are.
kenq -> here's an idea. if he is as dumb as that just "pretend" to develop ubuntu + wine . collect your 3 grand. not bad for a free CD , eh? - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+141.get ubuntu cd
2. rename blue orb and make display changes to apply new os
3.profit
4. donate 99% to ubuntu for fairness and covering your butt against lawsuits - keng, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15here...and it's free for you...Ubuntu+wine....no charge.
- captjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hopefully it will be able to play Duke Nukem Forever
- AK10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The best responses are the "Hi, I can do this for you without a problem." and the one that touts "Flash Experts!". Probably Asian code farms, not even reading the project descriptions.
I don't think this is a joke, most people really are so naive about how computers work. They think its just some sort of magic! - Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Well, having all the features of XP shouldn't be too hard. :P
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I used to be a member of rentacoder.com (where getacoder.com got the idea from... in fact, the originator posted a request at RaC... ah those were the days) and there were requests like this on nearly a monthly basis. I believe one request even went so far as to have the entire OS written in Visual Basic :D
If there's a ***** stupid enough to think he can get a new OS from the ground up for $3000 that can match WinXP, there'll be a ***** stupid enough to think (s)he can do it. - AlphaPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7not just 'all the features of xp' but 'ALL THE FEATURES OF XP'.
- SlabHardcheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It reminds me of when someone asks "what do you do?", and I say "computer programmer". And they respond, "Programming, uh, that's like typing. Right?"
- wildfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Exactly the reason I don't take up projects from rent/getacoder.com anymore. Most people want the entire wheel for the price of a spoke.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6ReactOS FTW(Its logo is a Blue Orb O_O)
- BaldurPan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9This is like the quest for the perfect woman.
- noah45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm making the switch to BlueOrb OS.
- dizzybastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i can already imagine him going to the bank to get a loan, "Yeah i need some money, I wanna compete with microsoft.... $3000 should do" lol
- pflocal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does it need to work on all the internets too?
- DigitalPioneer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What is he talking about, "User-friendly interface like XP"??? He's insane!
- Hayl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That is possibly the most lame request for a project I have ever hear of... still laughing.
- ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.getacoder.com.nyud.net:8080/projects/need_operating_system_42879.html
- Curufir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"free" does not equal "free beer." It's "free" as in "let's redefine an emotionally charged English word to suit our agenda."
- dayvideg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8pick a linux distro and save urself a couple g's
- Scott2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can have that to you in about an hour. Payment up front.
- MikeTheC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah, the ultimate fool's quest.
- rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with the first poster.. Ubuntu+wine then make a new theme.
If I am not mistaken, as long as you include the source code you can sell it.
--dan - Wireddd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2looks like nyud got it:
http://www.getacoder.com.nyud.net:8080/projects/need_operating_system_42879.html - neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, but then you'd have to make this guy understand that when he redistributes it, he -also- has to give his users all the rights that he got, such as source code.
- MikeTheC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um, no disrespect or anything, but yes there are.
Short story:
I once knew a guy who figured since I could do DTP and tutor him that I could help him write a game app. Even when I tried to explain to him that coding was a specialty and an industry unto itself, his opinion was (based on feeling I empowered him a lot and that he was so easily able to translate his old-school graphic arts skills into Illustrator/Photoshop graphic arts skills) that, like, maybe if I just read a book on programming I could start on his project in a few weeks.
I gave up when I realized he was clueless. - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The computing landscape in 1991 is vastly different than todays. Commodore and Atari still ruled the roost and it didn't take an engineering degree or special API to figure out how to utilize the graphics chips or directly access the disk drives.
There are people out there whose entire time is consumed just working with modern GPU's or file systems. Linus' actual coding work on Linux, at this time, pales in comparison to all the active support code that goes along with Linux. - jprez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, i wish him luck.
- MikeTheC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I cringe when I hear people using the term "programming" to mean "setting up" or "installing software", etc.
I'm thinking of sending this guy an "easy" button. - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes thats true - there's nothing in the GPL that prevents you from selling open source , as long as you pass on the GPL license within what you are selling. i.e. you cant make it closed source.
"free" does not equal "free beer". its "free" as in "freedom". - tlittle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or how about the person who offered to modify a Unix system, for the cost of $2500, over 40 days. Assuming a 40 hour work week for one person, (and assuming that he/she works 30 of those days) comes out to $10.42 an hour.
- rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn It, I was just punked.
--dan - coditza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@neko: not quite. that kind of guy will be happy if you give him a CD from witch he can install the whole thing.
Some said in these comments that this was the lames request for a project. Well, no. The lamest one was like:
"I want to copy Google, but with a twist. I need the logo to be longer. $50 because it's only 1 HTML page and I'll give good rating." :P - michaelGregoire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beautiful.... it shouldn't be a much of a big deal to throw together an OS... huh? Definitely a one man job. ;)
- burkay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nobody is that stupid. It must be a joke.
- dattaway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I knew someone who started a senior project in engineering school that covered magnitudes too many basic technical features that added up to many years of labor. Needless to say, he failed hard because he took on way too much.
Write down all the features of a typical operating system and try spending a year just coding one from scratch. Now that itself can be a challenge to even the most experienced. - dmsomebody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WheatoniX ftw
http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/looflirpa/wil.shtml - albatross5000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1buried for stupidness
- yaryarhumphump, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I just pee'd myself.... cant stop laughing
- HitokiriX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2-I need someone to program me a new OS (Operasting System)-
Haha WTF is a Operasting System? You might wanna try out Lineusx? :P - 121GW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I vote for Cameron Diaz as "Ms. Windows XP!" When is the pageant?
- mike503, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0it would be nice for that person to dump $3000 into getting more windows-compatible functionality and code written for the OSS community. something that can sit atop any distro - debian, ubuntu, redhat, suse, blahblah
- vfault, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Not to stomp on your dreams or anything buddy, but your "dream" OS is not gonna happen. Quote me on that.
- neoian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1http://duggmirror.com
EDIT: damn! - xptweakerntn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Honestly, this reminds me of that time SOMEONE decided to experiment and program a free OS, but it was only for that single person, and look where it ended up! (linux)
- aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Not a price drop, just a promotion by Don Quijote; a retailer that take pride for cheap prices (kinda like a Japanese Wal-mart). They also have only a limited number of 20GB units at the 20% sale (similar to those $250 laptops Bestbuy had on Thanksgiving, its designed to get foot traffic into the stores). I checked out the Don Quijote in Shibuya and Akiba are all out of the promotional PS3s, but they are more then happy to sell you ones at full price.
