- sirdaz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+108If its the digg effect or something else I don't know, but over a minute later and I don't see my translation. Not very instant.
- cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+46There's no translation for poor english.
- wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -4/+45"This text translation tool is the most advanced available today although it's not a certified translation."
Translation: You might be shot if used for war-related activities. - cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+34http://ajaxtrans.com/
The tool in this article is a complete copy, down to the UI, of AjaxTrans, which was on Digg a while ago. I'd really like to see the originator of this idea get some credit here. I've been using AjaxTrans for a while, I think it uses either BabelFish or Google as a backend, although I haven't checked yet. - JohnnyKdiggs, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31I don't know why everyone is saying it doesn't work. It translates English to Mime perfectly.
- iamnotrich, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25No he tomado a españoles por diez años. = I haven't taken any Spaniards for ten years
- jobenly, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30It's better than Babelfish, but the translation is still lacking a lot. Example:
me: I haven't taken Spanish in ten years.
Spanish translation: No he tomado a españoles por diez años. - barnis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24yeah mine is just spinning the little ajax-esque thing and doing nothing
- m0tbaillie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19BREAKING: Translates the first word on-the-fly, but the rest never shows, not even after clicking the 'translate' button (IE7/Firefox)
- Kormiku, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19I wrote in chinese: "Hello, ive missed you. When will we go out to lunch together?"
And this is what it returned to me in english: "You are good, I all thought you, when we have eaten meal"
I dont think it works much better than babelfish or the other translation services, but this one is on-the-fly so it is nice in its own respect. - jmeeter, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I'm definitely experiencing the Digg effect. This thing isn't working worth a *******.
- BobDole1216, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12It probably would have worked better if you had said "I haven't studied Spanish in ten years."
- devindotcom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Oh my god! quick, everyone click on this link! it's AMAZING
...
stop spamming, bitch! - oxdeltaxo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Yeah mine can't get past 4 words without halting and giving a blank result.
- erinspice, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I typed in "I want to buy a carrot" and it did absolutely nothing. "I am cold" produced the same results.
- st0nes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Wrote a simple sentence to translate into French. It gets as far as "bonjour" then stops. Not useful.
- inkhead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Mac OS X has had a Widget that translated in realtime like this for well over a year..
- nullx42, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Isn't better then babel fish unless you can stick it in your ear.
- sneeka2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6And the story of her running away screaming.
- ours, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6It's not a super translation but it's sort of understandable. In English that would be "I haven't taken to Spaniards (Spanish people) for 10 years"
- wildfire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4BabelFish is powered by SYSTRAN: http://www.systransoft.com/
Google says it has created it's own software:
"Has Google developed its own translation software? Yes. Google's research group has developed its own statistical translation system for several language pairs now available on Google Translate."
AjaxTrans seems to be using Google though after looking at the HTML source. - rjam710, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I've always used freetranslation.com for my translations. It's how I got through sophomore French in high school.
Also, there's a lot of these free translation sites, I don't really see anything too special about this one. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Was the sentence 'Hello' by any chance? :)
- stalefries, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I sincerely hope that you wrote "This sucks" in the translator, as opposed to you believing that English slang translates correctly.
- ajchavar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4you just summed up the problems with every piece of translation software in existence.
- spokesandspools, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4i've yet to come across a translator that doesn't suck balls
the speed here offers is useless if the translations are incorrect. buried - jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Shut yo mouth, turkey.
- ApeInago, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4burried for the innapropriate use of words.
stupid, innefective, dumb, broken, retarded, *****, or another word which more describes the state of the site might have been better. - ekravchenko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Has a 2000 character limit and is very buggy...
- oinkyboinky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3you're probably better off looking up each separate word in a Spanish/English dictionary :/
- brundlefly76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Its very buggy.
- silencerider151, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, it's a great tool. Pressing F12 to go straight to a translator is way faster than opening a new tab in firefox and going to a translation sight.
- Foutrelis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"response = urllib2.urlopen(babelfish, params)"
urlopen.. babelfish.. huh? O.o - capiCrimm, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8since I don't speak spanish that translation seems fine. Maybe next time try translating from Spanish to English?
- drafhk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The chinese word for "*****" is not coming up.
- MiamiGuy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Que lento!
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3You're right. It comes up empty when I type "poor english".

humm... seems to translate into: needs better error handling. - EochaidRiata, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I compared it to worldlingo and it did not do as well with Japanese.
Google announced that they are working on a translation method that actually examines context and phraseology rather than just doing a simple dictionary replacement but I haven't seen anything come out of the labs yet. - jull1234, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Getting pretty slow..
- Kormiku, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Chinese word for ***** is "Cao". Pronounced something like tsow. Make the ts noise then ow as in you just got hurt. Tsow
- dragonlor20, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is actually one of the worst ones I have used in a long time. Half of what I wrote wouldn't show up. German nouns threw the entire thing off. Even simple German phrases weren't being translated into English correctly or accurately. German nouns and pronouns were missing.
I make mistakes in German from time to time, but after 7 years of study I think I have the simple phrases down. ;-)
Buried as inaccurate. - Fhwqhgads, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"***** you" = "va te faire foutre" in French
- cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://ajaxtrans.com/
Just use the original. It's been around for a while, and is way better than this. - Dimbleby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sheeit....this is a pretty bad piece of crap.
If and thats a big IF, it does translate instantly, it will either give the wrong translation and then if it doesn't know the next word (standard words which it should know) it will erase the rest. Way to go. Buried.
Sorry. Systranbox for the win. - joesnow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When I saw the title of this, I thought: what about all of the other "on-the-fly" translators that have been free & around since like 1999? ... World's only? inaccurate.
- SebHughes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Too bad German translation is no use to man.
- skyer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It can't translate the word "Digg".
- Sabretou, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You weird man. Girlfriend weirder man.
- nobody554, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1or even, "Hello, World!"
