- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, I'd say the rumblings are just now growing; more people in the Windows realm are starting to notice these facts, and it's starting to snowball. So people care now more than ever.
The article does have some newer insights, but I do agree it's spinning the old wheel, and it is a blog, so it's not getting my digg, but I'm not demoting it either. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love windows and MS and Bill Gates
- revokin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone who has been following Vista at all knows this article is pure *****. There are some huge changes coming in Vista. For one the tcp/ip stack is totally new. Also there's been many changes to improve stability like having more things run in user-mode instead of kernel-mode (read drivers). Also I'm thinking UAP will be a godsend to us sysadmins. And I haven't even scratched the surface.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes and again, "X stole Y from Z" arguments are so incredibly lame. Guess what? Apple stole the 3-D accelerated GUI concept that makes their eye candy work from SGI's IRIX? A similar setup powers Windows Vista. Windows NT stole from VMS. Apple stole the BSD kernel from Berkeley. But who really gives a *****?
If there's any related features between Operating Systems it's simply because the same market forces that drives one, drives the other. It's a response to a demand for such features and an attempt to add value to the product. Why is this so difficult to understand? Software engineers don't think "hmm, let's steal X from Y for no apparent reason," they think "How do I solve X problem? Let's do Y." - revokin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://channel9.msdn.com/tags/Windows+Vista
The truth is out there. - embraceware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the final build of Windows Vista will have Duke Nukem' Forever pre-installed. ;)
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3gosh, how many more of these articles from these retards do we need ?
these articles same the same thing over and over again, which is just complaining about a few features like sidebar and the new 3d switcher.
also, this idiot doesn't even know what 'vapourware' means.
let's see, i'll debunk everything he says right here.
ignorant comment #1: sidebar was stolen from apple's dashboard.
truth: dashboard was apple's way to combat sidebar, which was in development and publicly shown FIRST. konfabulator is also a copy of the early 'desktop gadget' type programs like ss.
ignorant comment #2: about organising photos and picasa.
truth: picasa isn't even developed by google, it's simply from a company they boughtout (which this author and others frown upon, or only frown upon when microsoft does it .. gg bias) and is a great program, but what is wrong about microsoft FURTHERING users document organisation (not implementing it for the first time) in their os ? as we can see with vista and the new live system they are improving the user experience.
ok, this is the big one below, shows just how incredibly dumb this guy is.
ignorant comment #3: the new ui is the only 'feature' that is new about the os as the other features are copies.
truth: it's not a feature and the only other features he listed as being copies are sidebar and picasa, OMG WOW, but now let's go into this 'ONLY' new feature comment.
vista has a completely new codebase, development procedure & code testing (and the bug jail, hah).
the kernel has been written and built completely different to previous versions of windows; it is actually a simple 'core' with features being added as modules, this allows for great stability, ease of use/upgrading/adding, greater security and so on.
- check out the channel9 video about the kernel.
with uac (user account control) they've taken the opposite approach with users compared to what they did with xp. users will be 'limited' by default and uac ensures that they do not install things they shouldn't, modify important files or execute things they shouldn't. this is an incredibly simlpe explanation as that is all i need to say right now.
new network stacking (huge performance increase) and native support for ipv6.
new audio stack; new use of audio channels and management with individual programs and so on.
new ui engine (avalon among the many new technologies). the ui is more than simply looking different, it can do a million times more things than the ui backend in xp, is more efficient, is scalable (you mac users love scalability, right) and so on.
new search integration .. yup, it seems everyone (apple, google and so on) is doing this now.
new installer and distribution technology, gives huge control of the creation of setups for windows (including /real/ unattended installations) and distribution/setup of vista setups for organisations as large as corporations, or small businesses with 4 computers.
new crypto technology, i don't have much to say about this as i don't fully understand the algorithms they talk about and so on, so all i'm going to say is checkout the msfn crypto blog and the channel9 video.
new and better rss support, another thing many companies are doing.
AND I COULD GO ON.
so, if you digg this and support articles like this, good job, you've made you lemmings look even worse. - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're forgeting the primary purpose of an operating system which is to provide an interface between hardware and software. Everything that's being mentioned here are new features of the Vista shell, which is a small irrelavent part in the scope of the Operating System. Vista supports the next 10+ years of hardware and sofware. That is it's purpose. Shell widgets are irrelavent, things like this can radically change every release. If you're gauging an operating system by such things you're making a huge error in judgement.
Performance, security, reliability, hardware and software platform support are amoung things you should be looking for in an OS. And until Vista is released, it is very difficult to talk about any such areas.
As Apple is surely aware, eye candy and shell features are just marketing. They owe it to Berkeley for everything that makes OSX a viable operating system and contribute little themselves beyond a poor software platform and stupid eye candy.
Microsoft builds platforms, not shiny buttons. - CarmelSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thing that has to be remembered is that Windows cannot make large moves quickly, like Apple for instance. With nearly every business PC in the world running on Windows, it would be suicidal to make a change that outdates applications quickly. Windows, by its sheer scale, is obliged to move slowly and deliberately, while still making progress. Many people said the same things about Windows XP being not very revolutionary when it came out, but would any of us like to go back to the instability of Windows 9x?
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it wasnt for "Borrowing" Others ideas than we would be lacking many things we call inovations today. EX an SUV - Not every automotive company rolled out an SUV at the same time but they all end up borrowing certian things from each other.
- BadassCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this article is total BS
if M$ didn't for example include desktop search than this guy would riddle M$ with bullets for not integrating a desktop search, but since they do this gut comes up with "all they're doing is ripping off apple"
this guy is just a bias Mac/Linux freak
no digg because he's a bias ass
i can't wait for vista and office12, yay M$!!! - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, someone else is unimpressed by Microsoft's "Innovations" (that were in operating systems up to 4 years prior).
I'm not digging it out of principal (Blogs are not valid sources of "news", especially flaming news like this), but I do agree with the author's points. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows Vista: is it the big push that desktop Linux has been waiting for?
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"(Why must I enter these silly alpha-numeric image codes for every post? I have already logged in!)"
Because you aren't a trusted member yet. Give it some time and it'
ll go away. - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and to make it even worse it's dugg from a blog.....so tired of all the inaccurate news from a blog.going to start returning to the actual news sources if this keeps up. sorry digg.com
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think a statement about how most of the stuff that was supposed to ship with Vista as being vaporware would have been better....
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly, the only reason I use windows is that my wifi card is difficult to manage on other OS's and games. Though, Cedega might sway me to Linux.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0for starters it's in beta and you should not give it this kinda of review. most likely by a apple fanboy wanting to make you think different. Vista will be a massive success......XP has more maket share than anyone and dwarfs them all.....can't wait to get my hands on it!
Oh and by the way you are the minority on digg when the rest of america thinks other wise! - fgump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, if they aren't diggin, then neither am I.
1, Vista's graphics are all show, and no productivity.
2. Can't spell vaporware (unless you are in England, or FUWUTI like myself)
(Why must I enter these silly alpha-numeric image codes for every post? I have already logged in!) - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Reported as Lame.
"It's vapourware" - No it isn't, it is a software product in obvious development.
Vaporware is when a company keeps announcing a product, and never delivers anything
real to back up the hype (Duke Nukem Forever, for example).
Whatever else you might want to say about Vista's originality (interface elements aside,
there is a lot of original thought under the hood), it is certainly not vaporware. - MarvinMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It may be a blog, but it's still worth a look.
When Microsoft comes up with an operating system that doesn't look and work like a retread and actually has something to offer over the other guys, I'll buy it. Otherwise, they can take a hike. - ace11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree with this. however im not digging due to fact its a blog and not fact.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Retarded article. No company invests billions of dollars in development of a product that is simply a copy cat visual upgrade of it's last version. The blogger probably has no clue what it takes to develop an operating system.
- Wings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A quote in TFB: "Even if [people] are not into home entertainment or in any of the specialty areas, they are just going to feel safer and more secure by using [Vista]," Alchin told Zdnet.
Too bad that users will just "feel" safer but not be very much safer than they are today. With all those legacy apps they feel they still need to support, it'll be impossible to maintain compatibility without also retaining all those bugs & vulnerabilities that is Windows.
And above, zerosum said "How about producing an OS that is more user friendly and superior in its usability and performance to Windows?"
You must be from another planet, or you would know that such an OS already exists, and has for about 5 years now. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What was that saying, again?
Something like, "Good coders write their own software. Great coders copy other software."? - shockingbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cquinnd said it right. Bloggers are getting very irresponsible. This is all opinion and not news.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and no digg because of this.
"Windows Vista loses by knock-out (pictured: Bill Gates beats Steve Ballmer in a computer game at CES"
It's not a computer game. It's a console game (Xbox 360). :-/ - StephnDolenc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think the post is fine
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bugmenot2, is the XBox 360 not a computer? It computes, does it not? ;)
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"After Microsoft pulled every feature in the software, all that's left now are under the hood adjustments."
Proof this guy is a complete douche - it's an operating system, under the hood is what matters
as a tester I've found the new interface breakaway - I don't care if it's a ripoff of OSX, the fact is I can't run most of my applications on OSX anyhow, and paying for service packs would ***** me to tears. - kanago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For godssake..
STOP TALKING ABOUT VISTA LIKE THE ONLY NEW THING ABOUT IT IS THE INTERFACE CHANGES.
I mean, REALLY, stop obsessing. The guts are what matter to me. - BadassCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0go to this sight and tell my vista is "vapourware"
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Can't spell vaporware"
As soon as I saw the title, I thought: "There is definitely going to be a comment about the spelling"
Well guess what: You don't just have to be from England, that's the preferred spelling pretty much everywhere except the states... and its pronounced 'zed', not 'zee'. ;) - zerosum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you don't like Windows Vista, why obsess over it by needlessly attacking Microsoft? How about producing an OS that is more user friendly and superior in its usability and performance to Windows? (With the same ability to run software and not take 6 hours to set up properly) Hmm?
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wtf @ badasscheese ???
- MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and what if this Vista comes out and just works great?
- SilentBobSC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mik - then they'll just keep whining, nothing will change this.
- saleens281, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"redhat 3 to redhat 4 had no changes except a couple of visual cue's".
Apparently said bloggauthor has absolutely no clue as to what Vista is bringing. I hate to break it to you, but the entire underpinnings of the OS have changed. It's as big, if not a greater leap than going from 2.4 to 2.6 kernel in linux. Then again, judging by the lack of intelligence and/or research on the bloggers part would lead me to believe he wouldn't know the difference between those either. - DJPandemonium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BS.
Vaporware is software that never is released. Ever heard of Duke Nukem Forever?
Vista will get a release.
Whether it will have problems is a different argument entirely. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vista = WindowsME2008 Xtreme DRM Edition
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0didn't we know this.... 12 months ago?
- SilentBobSC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@g3ctf4 -
Agreed, it's gonna take the UberOS years to take over the market share that M$ has now, and it will have to do it in a way that doesn't scare the crap outta the home users. These poor people are just learning Windows in some cases, and you want to throw a whole new OS at them? It may look and work similar but I don't see home users adopting to a new OS anytime soon.
....Unless it's Apple's OS... that would put a hurting on M$ quick, but Jobs is too busy with Uncle Walt right now and the iPod has pretty much become the center of Apple's business as of late.
SB - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whatever. The beta is simply incredible. I cant wait to be able to code in beautiful winfx. The new interfaces are beautiful and the memory management is way way better (uses a lot more though)
- DarkSideofMoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Microsoft builds platforms, not shiny buttons"
I totally agree with you (and I'm a Mac user, so kinda mixed emotions on that comment LOL) The sad part is, the average user doesn't give a flying fsck about the platform it's built on. Seriously.
When XP came out over 4 years ago, I remember seeing my friends (myself included, I was an MS fanboy at the time) oggle and "oooh" and "aww" all over the new Start button. And plenty of teachers and staff across the globe probably did the exact same thing. Does the average person care about a new TCP/IP stack? Do they even know what TCP/IP stands for?? Or would they care about WinFS? (if it came out that is)
Unfortunately, the sad part about programming (in my mind) is that the core and most important parts of the OS that take the most development will be the least appreciated. But that's the whole point: the user isn't supposed to know what's going on. All they should worry about is how pretty their buttons and effects are.
As a Mac user, I love the neat little things that Apple thinks of: Expose, Genie Effect, Dashboard transition, User account cube tranistion, etc... I know you'll say that it's all fluff and *****, but I realize there's more stuff to the OS than that. It's just a little more shine and that extra detail Apple always adds... - snarkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> paying for service packs would ***** me to tears
Here's the deal about paying more for Apple products in general:
1.) Price is what you pay, value is what you get. Apple provides high-value products that many people find worth the price. No one ever asks "why pay more for a BMW when you can buy a Hyundai?" The difference in value is appreciable even to the most simple minded.
2.) Apple owners actually have things like jobs and discretionary income, and don't have to settle for some stripped-down ghetto model from Dell.
3.) For Apple users, buying the next upgrade is almost like Christmas. I can't wait to load it up and play with the all new goodies. Go to any Apple store on release day and you will see a line snaking around the block with people who feel the same way (people with incomes, that is.)
4.) What we pay for in OSX upgrades, we make up for by not having to pay for antivirus and anti-spyware programs. - Awakened, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How does this drivel reach the front page? These arguments have been done to death. It's quite clear as Vista approaches beta 2 that there are numerous improvements under the hood (rewritten TCP/IP stack, completely new way of approaching the GUI via WPF and Aero etc...) and that there is a lot to be excited about.
I suppose this is what happens when a tech news site gets *way* too mainstream. - SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Vista will be much better. Microsoft used a bunch of new development techniques to get things really right under the hood. The new UI is mearly icing on the cake, and a way to promote jazzy new features to the non-technical users.
- dirvish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree that most of the new features are rip-offs, but you need to look up the definition of vapourware.
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." -Inigo - q3ctf4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry to break the bad news to every Microsoft hater out there but Vista is going to keep microsoft as desktop leader for many years to come.
