opera.com — Opera today announced that Nintendo began distributing new version of IC for the Wii. It has lots of new features users have asked for, to name a few: external USB keyboard support, widgets, "Send to a friend" button, ability to copy and paste text from site...     Is this going to be free like the original or do I have to buy it now?

For whatever reason they are only licensing Flash 7.0 for non PC devices. Which means that sites which require Flash 8.0 or 9.0 aren't going to work with the Wii for the near future.

    1. You don't "put the Web on a device," you equip a device with a "browser." Similarly, the iPhone is not an "internet communications device," it has a "browser."
    2. Sure, Opera Software got the Wii contract. But it is a huge leap for them to declare themselves the only company putting browsers on devices.

  • jimh54, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1I've downloaded it right now, but the there is nothing about it being keyboard compatible in the description or help sections on the wii. it only says the software must be used with the wii remote. also says it is flash 7 compatible. buried as inaccurate. It was an update though.

      • johnnysaucepn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Neither does Flash 8. Flash 7 was the latest version possible until the recent announcement of Flash Lite 3, which is due to be available some time next month, I believe. Then you have all the waiting for development time, and integration, and testing....

  • oisact, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I've downloaded the new version of Opera, mainly to check out the widgets. The problem is widgets.opera.com only shows a very, very small subset of widgets when browsing on the Wii. Obviously there is some sort of compatibility issue preventing most widgets from running on the Wii's version of Opera. None of the cool widgets show up for the Wii, so I'm rather disappointed. If you visit the widgets site, the home page lists the 12 highest rated widgets. Not one of those shows up on the Wii.
    As a side note, when I visited the widgets site before I upgraded Opera, it took me to an Opera download page whenever I tried to use a widget. So that obviously was not working with the older version of Opera.
