Lame? Some of these guys are pulling in 200K+/year doing this. Some have literally won in the millions... I'd bet money your salary can't compete with that... make fun of it all you want, but they're still raking it in... - skifreak107, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27What cave did you just come out of?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+31You guys seriously need to get a life. My god, I play games and I am pretty hardcore but I don't complain about every little change in a game unless it A. Interupts me from playing (bugs). B. makes the game boring.
And from my current CS gameplaying experience I like it a lot, it balances the guns. And wait..CS:S is not all about gettings guns..money is easy to come by if you ACTUALLY CAN KILL PEOPLE! So, stop sucking, start earning money and stick a dildo in your ass. - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Playing video games for a living is just as retarded as throwing a ball around for a living.
Sadly, it works because in both cases there are actually people who are willing to pay to see the best of the best do their thing. - deleteYourslf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Why not? People get paid to have sex for a living...
- thegreatsam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14While I generally despise counter-strike, and how so many people have put it up on this "throne", I think that the article was really insightful. I really didn't know that so many people were still playing 1.6
- mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The title of this article should be the death of "Professional" Counter-Strike. For those who might be out of the loop, "Professional" Counter-Strike is the act of playing Counter-Strike competitively, usually in an online league like CAL, in hopes of becoming a paid eSports athlete.
Most people who play the game this way tend to forget what the game was originally designed for, and that design was fun. Professional players do not care about recreational players or newcomers, they want the game to remain the same so they can tone their skills and become the most notable player on their IRC network. This kind of behavior is (usually) encouraged by communities like GotFrag and ESEA. Most players still play CS 1.6 and do not want anything changed. Every year they continue to play the same rotation of 5-6 maps in the same format.
I know this and could probably explain it better, for I used to be part of the "Professional" loop, but soon life kicked in and there were other things that took priority. Now that I have a chance to step back and look at my past, I really encourage any kind of change VALVe instates, regardless of how stupid it may seem. At least it is a change, something that this seven year old game needs. - BionicBeefpile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Turning off the variable weapon pricing is a simple CVAR. I don't understand why the author here thinks this will be the "end of CS:S".
Of much more concern to me are the random outages when the validation servers have trouble. It really bothers me that the default setting is "you don't own this game", so that if Valve has a server go AWOL, you are out of luck until they get it fixed (even though you've bought the game) - ArmchairAthlete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Maybe it's also just getting old? You get bored with any game eventually.
- malkir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12that whole "no re-spawn watch other people play stupidity" is one of the main selling points of CS to me. Other FPS's seem retarded because death is so trivial. With CS's system you also spend time watching how others play so you can learn, and reflecting on why you just died so you can make sure it doesn't happen again.
But whatever, to each their own. I personally find constantly respawning totally lame. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I used to own a Lan Gaming Center where pro players would pay me per hour to use my computers and equipment. Id say the biggest problem was the hacking community. Its really hard to tell if someone is wall hacking if they are good at it. With big money on the line people tend to get really good at avoiding detection. And unless they are playing from a facility such as my own there is no way to guarantee that they arnt hacking.
- chiptinder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That's ridiculous. Watch any of the best player's videos and you'll see none of them camp one spot. Being aware and having good aim, and being able to predict what other people will do is what makes you a good player.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Ya, I've never understood *why* CS is as big as it is. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid game, but the experience is mired by a terrible public community, rampant cheating, and bad sportsmanship. I only play with my FPS clan, otherwise I can't stand it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The no-respawn-instantly-on-death idea makes it so that you have a reason to stay alive. I'd go guns blazing without a care in the world otherwise, since I know that I'll just respawn instantly after I die anyway. The idea is to encourage team tactics.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've played CS since beta 2 [and I was pretty darn good for the 2.5yrs I played until I quit]. All I have to say is back then changes occured to the game more often and players were more enjoyable. I sitll miss my Colt Carbine having a scope. It was just that overtime the game got old and boring. I just recently started to play it again just for kicks, kinda like pong. 3 things started to kill it off for me: voice chatting, hackers, and that damn shield. Not to mention I had to pay for it all of a sudden, haha.
I'm waiting for another similar game to be developed. I played Wolfenstein ET for awhile afterwards. - chiptinder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I too ran a lan center, and can confirm the problem with cheating. There are leagues now that require you play from a certified lan center, as well as leagues that require you run an anti-cheat client to play. However, both can be circumvented. We found hacks on a couple of our computers, even though they were supposedly "locked down".
Anyway, I'm one of the people who still prefer 1.6 to source. Source has alot of problems, with frame rate being one of them. Even on a high end machine when you have 9 guys on screen and 3-4 smoke nades, you can dip below 100fps. And not everyone can afford a high end machine. On the flipside, it doesn't take a terribly new, high end machine to get a smooth, consistent 100fps in 1.6.
Condition Zero is a decent balance between the two, but 1.6 is still king.
And for you people saying it's sad, whatever, it's way more entertaining than traditional sports, and the comraderie is addictive. At the last tournament we hosted, we had teams from Canada drive down to Portland just to play. (I believe we had a grand prize of around $1000)
I haven't played in over six months (when the lan center shut down last year, I sort of 'retired' from the cs community, but play once in a blue moon) but reading this article makes me want to download steam again. :)
csdftw - PhantomTrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No kidding.
It's a free game for ***** sake. If Day of Defeat: Source was doing this, on the other hand, I'd understand the whiplash.
But as it is now, I wish all of these piss ants who can't do anything more than complain would just keep it to their CS 1.6 cs_office 24/7 server.
Please, leave us who know that the new version isn't supposed to be a clone with a new paint job out of this. PLEASE. - BionicBeefpile, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9CS:S in offline mode? Interesting...
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's free only in the sense that you get it free when you buy HL2...thus making it not free. It's just included in the price of HL2. If you want JUST CS:source you have to shell out $20 for it.
- deleteYourslf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I love CS:Source but get irritated with the endless mandatory updates, every time I want to play that game I have to wait 20 - 40 minutes and by the time it's ready to play I've moved on to doing something more entertaining...
- p0und, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9yea seriously, where have you been?
http://www.thecpl.com/ - mercatfat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Woah now. You want over 100 frames per second?
That's absoludicrous, and if I'm wrong please tell why it isn't. The human eye can only see so fast, you know. - Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All I can tell you is that Gun Game and the Zombie mod seem to have killed off most of the regular map rotation servers I used to see in the list. After that, it's a bunch of "Office 24/7" and "Dust 24/7." Those can be fun, but it of course gets pretty stale.
Then there's the problem of connecting to a server and waiting for everything to load up, only to find that (1) you get kicked out for taking a reserved slot or (2) you get transferred to another server populated by a fraction of the people. In fact, there is a loooong list of servers with some similiar names that do nothing but transfer me.
And when I'm browsing the server list, I hate it when I've selected one -- and it disappears down the list somewhere because it's still refreshing.
So the problems, for me, don't lie within the game itself, but in how I get access. It's also a pain in the ass to wait and download custom maps, because they're usually not very good. - malkir, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I've tried AA a few times awhile back and have always been disappointed with it's bugginess and terrible servers
- chrisrowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4IMHO the main factor that helped 1.6 into all its glory and popularity is the map de_dust2 info on the map, how it was made are a great read at
http://www.johnsto.co.uk/?t=making_dust2
As mentioned in the article, once this got changed people lost interest. - malkir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've never understood peoples dislike for being on the losing team, I've always found it to be more fun and challenging. Your good play can also make a much larger impact on the losing team.
- Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4if Valve truly wants to get more people over to source, they have only one option... shut down 1.6. i'm not saying it's a good idea... but think about it... people would still be playing 1.3 had they not forced 1.4, 1.5 & 1.6 on them. if 1.3 was still an option, it would be more popular than 1.6. just look at the comments in this thread of people still talking dreamily about the days of 1.3
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Well, I could get into the details, but right off the bat, FPS on computers is not the same as your eyesight. Secondly, I'd like to point out that, through my experience in games, the higher the FPS the smoother the game play, for several reasons...I don't think any computer can predict what areas of the game are going to dramatically lower your fps, so the higher it is at all times, the less chance you have of dipping below a choppy frame rate, but more importantly, the games run smoother the faster they are refreshing, even as you go past 100 fps, try it out sometime, look for yourself.
Or were you being sarcastic? - chiptinder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4voice_enable 0, join a server where sheilds are banned, and hope & pray there's no hackers :P Alot of servers have active admins who keep an eye out for hackers.
- RandomEngy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People in CS all hate change. Change anything, no matter what, and they all think it's worse than it was before. Every new version people bitch about it. It's only with the release of CS:S that people had a real opportunity to actually avoid having to adapt.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I switched over from CSS to WarRock. It's free, fun, and you can fly A-10's!
- BileFroth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thanks for just proving my point. That could be said of any game or sport, right?
I guess any kind of competition is unfair because there is always a better team. It's all about learning to adapt and studying how the opposite team plays to find a weakness. - Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3RichPowers: good luck finding an online game that doesn't have "a terrible public community, rampant cheating, and bad sportsmanship". people are people. gamers are gamers. you'll find good and bad every game you play.
oh, and not to mention in general, gamers always have and always will hate changes to their game. but they'd bitch if a game developer just stop putting out updates. - spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just play counterstrike (condition zero) because it's fun, and so is Counterstrike-source. Both have their positive points, but in the end I just enjoy playing a game where it's the gameplay that matters.
Aside from Counterstrike being this cultural ... thing... it's still a great game that many people such as myself will continue to enjoy for years to come. I don't involve myself in the leauges, clans or groups that associate themselves with the game, simply because I don't want to be all stressed out about it.
Gaming shouldn't be stressful, it should be enjoyable. If there is change abound (i.e. money system) either test it out before you make an opinion (you may just really like it!) or keep playing the same old version you've enjoyed for this long. - hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I never really got into CS. I am UT player. (For you noobs, UT = Unreal Tournament.) ;)
- mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4By real, you mean people who take the game far too seriously and no longer play for fun?
Gotfrag is wonderful if you want to turn CS into an MMORPG. - Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cannibal: i agree with you when it comes to the small static changes to the game. for the most part, i feel Valve has made improvements to the game. i was never one to bitch and bitch after every new update (which happened BEFORE Steam by the way. people bitched about 1.6 like the bitch about CS:S because it was different from 1.5 and 1.4), but they got used to it, cause there was nothing they could do about it, and the changes generally did make the game better
however, this new update with the weapons changing price week to week would CONSIDERABLY affect competition. just like this article says, the reason CS is so popular is because it's the BEST game for competitive gamers in tournies. i shouldn't have to go into considerable detail to explain how one week in CAL the AWP costs $4000, and another week it's at it's regular $5000 price would cause turmoil in game strategy.
if Valve wants to change the price of weapons, change the price of weapons... just don't do it once a week. - DimitroffVodka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have played CS since 2000 and it is currently the only game I play. I have dabbled in tons of other game but CS is the only one to keep me. I have played on the same group of servers for the last 3 years. They are No AWP/Auto Dust 2 only.
I have no clue how it has not got boring yet but it hasn't. We have created a great community where there is a lot of loyal admins that are all great players. We all actively search out hackers and spend time reviewing demo's. Hackers will alway be around but you just have to be more determined than them to keep your community in good shape. Our servers have done that by having a lot of good admins. We even make money off the servers by selling 'reserve' spots so people can get in the servers. Servers are almost always full.
I have stayed with CS since their is so much skill involved in the game. I know how to read the radar and know how to use my headsets. I know how to control my recoil and I am dominate with the scout.
I never see CS going down. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3CS took a turn for the worse when 1.3 was released, thats about when it started going downhill. Oh, remember when autosnipers could barely hit *****, instead of being damn near dead on accurate 2-3 shot kills? Yeah, those were the days. Now little kids run and gun with those ***** things thinking they are hot *****. Eat a deagle.
I was in love with older maps like backalley, vegas, oilrig, siege, estate, 747.. but these maps were left in the dust in favor of... tides? havanna? port? Give me a break, these maps blow. That reason alone makes me want to go back to 1.6 just to play those maps again.
CS:S version of Assault is a horrible campfest even more so than the original and that's saying something. Dust, Dust2, Italy and Office are pretty faithful to the originals, probably because if they ***** with those maps we'd notice.
"balanced play is paramount."
Yeah? Strafe jump awp headshots. This is 'balanced'? For a game toting realistic physics, that shouldn't even be possible.
Then there are people who need scripts to play like autoswitch after firing a round from an AWP and back again. Give me a break and grow some balls. I'll scout you anyday.
All that said, I still play CS:S for the aesthetics but will probably reinstall 1.6 soon when the price change takes affect and I finally get tired of all the noob ***** of Source. Yeah, Source is noobile, because its REALLY EASY to kill people now the laggy hitboxes are RIDICULOUS. Probably intentionally designed to be easier, so they could market it to more people who don't play as much.
CS is one of the most perfect games ever created, its a shame its getting bastardized more and more by patches and hackers. It could be so much more. - Andronicus1717, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Graphics, physics, no riot shield, and people somewhat willing to embrace change.
- Mang420, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I choose Americas Army over CS any day, no buying gun *****.
AA 2.7 has IMHO great 'realism' (open to interpretation), and if you play right you will might learn some combat tactics and might actually learn something close to actual foist poison shoot-as
Ive been addicted since 1.? in 2002 - BileFroth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3We're in agreement 100% malkir; +1 digg for your comment.
- pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No one? Theres a ***** of "no ones" playing then.
- chiptinder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5AA is absolutely no contest to cs. horrible.
- Andronicus1717, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Original Counterstrike has been dead to me since the switch to Steam, addition of the riot shield, and and the larger headshot hitbox.
IMO Counterstrike's appeal to me was the fact that if you are better than anyone than you can consistently prove that fact. Many of the additions have been to level the playing field between novice and elite (hitboxes, new radar, etc) and that has given the game less to experienced players.
Counterstrike: Source is my FPS of choice these days and I think the negative comments about the game are based on a feeling of nostalgia, betrayal, and lack of willingness to accept change. Sometimes though I feel the same way... CS 1.3 forever! - altf4me, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Because he was advertising his site. That doesn't go down too well here.
- pyr0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I haven't read all of it but I don't see any decline what-so-ever. I have been playing cs since beta 4, 2001, and have been in a few competitions. I have won around 3-5 grand in money and prizes. I don't play as much anymore but the gaming community is only growing larger. I support professional gaming and think it's great.
Just thought I'd throw in a thought. - Autoclave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I miss having to run to pick up the gun cannisters that were left on the ground after a round in Siege. That was fun. And I miss the DEA maps.
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i played it since Beta 1 and loved it until about beta 6 or so. then that new netcode and rampant cheating soured me forever. I went back a few times here and there to try it again, but never got back into it.
It was uber fun though, in those early days. especially with all the bugs/exploits. Using hostages to climb up above the map, gun running, ghosts opening doors, all kinds of stuff. -
