- theotheragentm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37Steve Jobs can't get AIDS. He's a Mac.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Can't Kevin Rose just have his team block people from registering names with GNAA in them?
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12No Growl or Adium? :(
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"I'm sorry GNAA is right." You're right, he's absolutely correct, we should wish a fatal disease on someone because they make a different type of computer than the one you use.
Dumbass. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14a list like this has to say Universal Binary or not otherwise its not too useful.
- bbeahm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Even though i love free mac software, i dont need digg to tell me the list every 2 months.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8For those that may not be aware of who the GNAA are and why they should be banned:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_Nigger_Association_of_America - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12OMG, another story that condenses hours of application trial and error for users saving them valuable time and also provides helpful information for those who are looking for good free applications.
Gosh Digg, why dont you digg stuff that happyfundave submits, like http://digg.com/music/Gnarls_Barkley_one_of_Times_best_5_albums_of_May
You people dont know quality... sigh... - drudometkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is good for me since I just "switched" to mac last week. Love my new macbook so far. Thanks for the list.
- ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well, since the OS translates transparently, Universal Binary is only really important for time-crticial apps and drivers, neither of which feature heavily on this list.
(A Core Duo 2.0GHz processor is so fast, half the time you wouldn't even know you were running PowerPC code.) - Ross, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8February 11th, 2006 is an updated list? lol
- Nyfeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Atleast add new apps if your going to call it "updated"...
- sldSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Many of those do not work well with Intel Macs.
I need Apple's X11, but the version on their site won't allow me to install it, and the version on my install disk just crashes whenever I try to run the installer...
It's really bothering me. I can't use Gimp because of this crap. - ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had no problems at all installing X11 off the system disc of an iMac 17" Core Duo.
GiMP runs fine. The X11 based Darwine even runs a few of my Windows program (although Parallels is a much better way to go). - EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They need to get rid of the "Ltd" items. Seriously, how many retail apps don't have a free trial?
- rbvmusic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I didn't know about iScroll or Fink before this. So the list isn't a complete waste.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. A Core Duo 2.0Ghz is fast, but a P4m 2.0Ghz isn't nearly as fast, and in that case universal binary makes a huge difference. I recall when Firefox wasn't unibin, it took maybe 30 seconds to a mintue to launch. I got the less-stable Deer Park that was unibin, and it was much much faster. Browsing the web with Firefox via Rosetta (the translation for PPC apps to run on intel) is like dial up. Universal Binary makes a huge difference.
- jteague82, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4can't beat a resounding recommendation like that...
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@UGM2009
you are so right. It is really hard to find universal apps most of the time. It is a pain for me, kinda defetes the purpose of having a core duo 2GHZ if it runs like a 500mhzG3. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I know its on there but it needs to be mentioned
http://smultron.sourceforge.net/
Smultron is necessary on any OS X web developers workstation. - dignome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is also Q:
http://qemu.dad-answers.com/viewtopic.php?t=1653 - fohat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4dont forget to uncover the vent :)
That said, This list needs to have Universal Binary apps listed. I'm going to undigg now. - TaeBoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why stop the lists? People keep digging them. Are you saying things that people will digg shouldn't be on digg?
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shiira is on that list :D
that browser is amazing! - pornel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A virus scanner? And how many OS X viruses does it have in it's database?
I bet it's functional equivalent to:
#!/bin/bash
echo "No viruses found." - bennypowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They Forgot all the great Free Audio stuff. Notably
Ardour - Free Daw
Audacity - Free Editor
Hydrogen - Free Drum Sesquencer
JackOSX - Free audio system (ardour requires)
JackRack - Jack based effects processor (uses LADSPA plugins)
FreqTweak - Novel effects processor
and more! - TaeBoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Audacity was there.
- generaldisarray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NeoOffice works on Intel Macs now. Just pay a little money for the Alpha pre-release. Would it be so awful to support an open-source development team?
- Isopor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For music/audio apps I would list up Audacity to, nice program.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - xioner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2mmm, Block User, yummy tool and very useful.
- antitab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What the hell has gotten into you? I just got a new MacBook the other day, and I haven't been fully initiated into the Apple software circle. Thanks to this list, I have 35 new items on my desktop waiting for install.
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Seeing as the list contains no games, here's some of my freeware favourites. Of the hundred or so titles in my games folder, these are the ones I keep coming back to:
Pretty much anything by these guys: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/
BlackShades: http://www.wolfire.com/
Chopper: http://www.majicjungle.co.nz/
l1neum: http://www.la1n.ch/
Spheroids: http://www.salric.com/
Tracktor Beam: http://will.thimbleby.net/ - ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, a 2.0GHz Core Duo is equivalent to a 1.0GHz G4 at least. On certain types of code it is even more efficient.
If you're not running a time-critical app, apart from the extra bounces during startup, it's hard to tell the difference the emulation is so transparent. - outz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4The best freeware of all is http://macbricol.free.fr/coreduotemp/
it will allow you to see how overly hot your intel macbook is running.
/glad he returned his TWO defective macbooks
//certain keyboard keys stopped working on both - cyclonus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I made a similar one last week, not just freeware though:
http://digg.com/apple/How_do_I_do_things_on_a_Mac_A_software_solution_guide_for_OS_X - NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Meh, pretty crappy list, only interesting ones are Camino (which I already have) and NeoOffice which doesn't work on Intel Macs yet.
- Rowen7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Man, anyone can register a blog, post up a "top list" and get digg'ed on a tuesday.
What happened to real content? - araleius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like lists
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What do you hate about Growl?
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1iScroll is great. I'm using it right now to scroll down this page.
- fohat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For those looking for Universal Binary apps, I found http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/apps.php?sub=100&u=on linked off TFA. It looks pretty decent so far, found a music theory program!
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Maybe those are too obvious. Besides, I hate Growl.
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5They need to add Flock to that list :)
- tormented, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3It hasn't overheated yet?
- generaldisarray, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1best compliment ever.
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Uh, nope.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1let me help you: -1
- blanski, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4The reason you get so many lists is because you're going to need as much freeware as you can after you pay for your Apple!
- tormented, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2That is the most true comment I have heard yet.
- timecop, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2why would you want to run gimp on a mac in the first place.
pirate photoshop, you insensitive clod -
