I'd switch full-time to linux and avoid the problem all together if I wasn't such gamer...

Oh, and just to note: this trick works with programs other than Windows Defender.

I have a job and paid for XP Pro.
How many times do I have to verify that I paid for a product. It's annoying and people without technical knowledge are hurt. I have reinstalled dozens of other peoples legitimate XP boxes because of WGA. WGA made me switch to linux. Long Live the penguin!!!
sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Orca allows you to open up and read msi (MS Installer I think...) files. An msi file can read the install like a mini database and you can choose to run or not run certain parts of the install. We use msi files where I work and use orca to compare what files have and have not been changed for any given upgrade.

Now, let's say you don't buy Windows, okay you have a few choices: Make the move to Linux or go OS X.

Linux doesn't cost you anything, but still has issues and gaming can be quite tricky, so the WoW addicts out there are a bit SoL.

OS X plays some games (Not a ton but they have them) but it also requires you to buy a new machine, which can run from 700 bucks (For low-end Mac Mini's, forget gaming) up to 3000 dollars for an actual upgradeable system. For some folks, this is not an option, the cash flow isn't there.

Unfortunately, Windows is there, runs on custom built PCs, as well as cheap machines you can pick up for 400 bucks, runs a ton of software, and a ton of hardware. If there was a viable alternative, Linux was more user friendly than it is now (It's getting there, but not there yet) or OS X ran on common hardware, or were a little cheaper with a mid-range tower...then we could all dump MS. Unfortunately, Windows will continue to be a problem.

OAKsider, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I have to agree. Vista is really starting to feel infested with rediculous amounts of 'Advantages' just so they can overprice and sell a few copies. If they just sold it at a decent price without this mess all'd be well, but who are we to say anything to these 'experts'. Microsoft is just becoming one of those corporations that everyone loves to hate, and just wait until 2007. The only reason I want Vista is for a few advancements and DX10, but ***** I'll grab a 'Box/Wii/PS3 instead if I have to.

I've seen too many virus-ladden pages that use the string.fromchar function to hide their virus/exploit payload and these days i don't even bother trying to see what it does..
if it has this kind of javascript obfuscation it is up to no good. period.
