My god... the nerve of this guy! "Freaks"?!1
Once I'm done masturbating to my hentai ascii pr0n collection I'm going to give this prick a piece of my mind. Who's with me? Comrades, to the Nerdmobile! - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+62God knows it was probably the 22 years from 1960 to 1982.
- hufnmouth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59Taylor sounds like an ass. It seems he tries to get this way through intimidation and when that doesn't work, he resorts to name calling. 22 years in computer systems my ass.
- bairy, on 10/12/2007, -20/+74Who gives a crap if it's a dupe.
If it hits front page >once then it means it's a popular story worth repeating for those who missed it first time.
If it doesn't hit front page then it'll fade out anyway so what the hell does it matter.
Digg is better than /. where dupes frequently frontpage after being chosen by editors who can't be bothered to search. - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+59wow he i can't believe he called us freaks, what a dickbag. in case you forgot his email, citymgr@cityoftuttle.org
- RobrechtV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53"Taylor said that he also did not regret threatening Hughes with FBI action, since he believes that was what prompted Hughes to start treating him seriously. “After that, he called me Mr. Taylor,” he said, “And he got me the information I needed.”"
What happened to just saying "please"?
"Hey *****, pass me the salt."
"Pass me the salt, dammit!!"
"Allright, if you don't pass me the salt RIGHT NOW i'm gonna call the feds on you!!!!!!!!"
Meh, it works too. - thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51This guy is a complete toolbag and is bringing tuttle a bad name. Way to attract technological genius to your area, call them geeks with nothing to do.
What an idiot. - ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44Your salt scenario is close but it's missing something...
I don't make salt, I make the box that salt is shipped to you in and we're not even sitting at the same table!!! - bairy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+50For anyone who hasn't seen it.. where have you been?? http://www.centos.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=127 (almost 200,000 reads!)
The tuttle times have written a really good summary of what happened - probably one of the more unbiased ones which is a little surprising but after reading the Mayor and Taylor's comments it's nice to know Oklahoma has a fair newspaper.
Way to go on the 'freaks' comment Jerry - that'll help your already battered image!
Is it just me or is it that everytime this guy opens his mouth to "defend himself" he just digs himself deeper?
I notice the mayor basically saying "he did nothing wrong" (paraphrased). Wow, I'd sure like to have a mayor that thinks rudeness and abuse is the way to get things done! - Khaosx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44You've obviously never dealt with anyone in the "old school" of IT. You get an ex-mainframe guy that knows diddly over squat about "those new-fangled mini computers", and this is EXACTLY the kind of response you'd expect. They hear enough on the news to get scared, but don't know enough to diagnose or fix the problem. Not all of them are like that, but there are sure a lot of them running around that are.
- brownb2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40"Unbiased"?!!!
Unbiased is when they also contact Hughes and CentOS and ask for his opinions and side of the story. Please take a little more time to ensure you are not reading propaganda in future. - Mitchl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39My guess is that Johnny Hughes, the developer of the free operating system, probably works a hell of a lot more than 30-odd hour a week government beurocrat Jerry Taylor, 22 year IT veteran. And Hughes still has all that free time to write OS's and do all the legwork to solve a problem for the incompenant IT veteran.
Any chance we could get Alex and Kevin to interview Jerry Taylor for diggnation? I am guessing at some point Jerry might say "It's hot in here" - thirdplanet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35it's worse than that: he's illiterate. he can't read.
this is the page that comes up: http://mirror.centos.org/mirrorscripts/noindex_new.html
it tells him everything he needs to know in clear english. - thirdplanet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37taylor needs to cut down on the exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why does he use so many!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?????????? - redbeard36, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36OMG this guy Taylor is an ass. He sends several threatening email with no helpful information and then defends himself later by saying that he wasn't being helped. If he'd sent an email simply saying he saw this and didn't understand what it was and asked for help, he would have gotten it. I used to deal with bozos like this in Customer Support. He's the kind of guy who thinks he knows a lot about tech, but knows almost nothing and then acts like an ass to the person he needs help from.
- highwebl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34I love how he mocks that the guy made the OS his site runs on available for free. That's gratitude.
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -8/+42Dear Jerry Taylor,
You are a giant douchebag. That is all freak.
Sincerely,
A supporter of the intarweb - toddbu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33There's a real learning lesson here. Back before the Internet, you could say anything you wanted to your local newspaper about people outside your area because it was unlikely that they'd ever read it. Now that we have web sites and email, that has all changed. If you look at the city's web site, it is geared toward attracting outside interest to their community. Why wouldn't they then do everything that they could to attract positive interest?
I think that the city underestimates the Google effect. We all know that before people are hired that managers do searches on prospective employees looking for dirt. The same holds true when businesses look at where they want to locate. If I'm just an average Joe looking to plunk down a wad of cash to start a new business, I'm going to want to know that my new city government is responsive to my needs. If I were to see that the city manager was as bull-headed as Mr. Taylor then I'd have to question whether I was investing my money wisely, and whether another community might be more receptive to my input.
It seems to me that a simple apology would go a long way. Instead, both the city manager and mayor are digging in for a fight. Maybe we should start electing officials not based on their ability to run government, but on their ability to recognize their own limitations. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30This guy is just stoking the fire... let it go Mr. Taylor or the geeks will just keep using you for flame bait.
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30This story is not unbiased...it is heavily biased in favor of "Jerrah", and accepting of his ignorance. The City of Tuttle should be ashamed of how their community has been represented to the technological community. Taylor's actions, along with this story, makes them look like a bunch of hillbillies who wallow in their own stupidity.
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29The real crime is that the preferred font of the City of Tuttle's website is Comic Sans. Now that's just unforgivable under any circumstances.
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Looks like the ignorant ass is getting no more than he deserves from people smarter and more knowledgeable than he. What a douchebag.
- forgetfulca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27"I notice the mayor basically saying "he did nothing wrong" (paraphrased). Wow, I'd sure like to have a mayor that"
Not only that, Taylor thinks he got more respect and service by mentioning the FBI. Apparently sarcasm really doesn't come through in email, although personally I found the volume rather high in that regard.. How anyone could miss the fact that hughes was just sick and tired of this exchange is beyond me. Or another facet: that hughes used information available to them both (enough that he, a stranger, was able to suss out their situation) to figure out what had happened, who had done what, and what did tuttle-town need to do. It boggles the mind.
I hope labeling strangers 'freaks' makes him feel better, when it should have told him teenagers are better informed about IT than he is, and he certainly shouldn't be in charge. I hope they have better luck with their roads, sewers and library, because without luck and some extra-supportive contractors they are just going to get taken. - thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29don't spam the guy. He'll call the FBI on you.
- justinmt7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30I lived in Oklahoma City for about 2 years now. Trust me, people in Oklahoma are really this dumb.
- Sofa_King_Jank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Sadly, this is 'modus operandi' of a large number of uninformed, ignorant computer users these days. If you've ever worked any type of help desk then you might be familiar with the this type of individual. Five minutes of research may have helped to enlighten him and give some clarity in explaining the issue to his hosting company.
- Mitchl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Dateline: Tuttle
Jerry "The Jackass" Taylor announced today that the city will be changing all it's websites to Microsoft 2003 servers. Taylor said, "No wonder we had our kerflickiny problems last week. Those damn nincompoops at our hosting company were using some free operating system. Nothing good ever came for free, son. That CentOS must be some red commie outfit. We are switching to that Microsoft Web software. We won't have no more problems with security or hacking from all those freaks out there. It costs a bunch of money and they have been in business a good long time, you can trust Microsoft."
Taylor's wife commented as well, "My good husband Jerry knows what he is doing. He has a great deal of experience with MicroSoft. Oh wait, you are talking about computer stuff? I thought you were asking about our bedroom affairs." - captHij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22To add to his image the article says that he did not take the actions that were given on his website because it might lead to the installation of a virus. Instead he trusted the word of a person for whom his only contact was an email. Oh yeah, and he started the email exchange because he thought that the guy had broken into one of his systems . This guy is a real hoot.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Taylor should be removed from office. How can you let a voice of the city publicly declare other people 'freaks'? Besides, he wasn't looking at A WEB PAGE. It's the default test page. Even by LOOKING at it you can tell that.
Maybe someone should really hack the site this time, and defame his bio. - Quarks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22That's the most stupid thing indeed.
Lets forget about the whole web-server 'misunderstanding' - him threatening the FBI thing and focus on his linguistic skills.
Why in the world did he write like a 12 year old AOL'er in a professional email?
Even if the mayor agrees with what he did, why didn't he say something about Taylor writing like a kid?
Or is that an Oklahoma thing?
And what's with the insults?
Even after this all happened he called the Cent OS developers freaks!
"[CentOS is] a free operating system that this guy gives away, which tells you how much time he%u2019s got on his hands."
Having no clue about web-servers and shouting at the people who want to explain it to you is one thing, but not knowing what open source is - after his so called 22 years of experience - is insane!
Let us read on: "Mayor Paxton said that the city manager knows a lot more about computers than he does, and he trusts Taylor"
Like i said before: I'm greatly concerned about this matter.
We have politicians in charge of important technology but at the same time they have no clue how it works.
In general, they're doing OK with non-tech related stuff (at least they're sure of their case), but when there's a computer involved they suddenly turn in to complete idiots.
"Oh I'm sure it's fine, he knows more about computers then I do" !!??!?! WTF!!!! and he's a Mayor for crying out loud.
Do you know more about computers then Mayor Paxton does? good, then he trusts you blindly, even if you make a complete fool of yourself and start shouting and insulting people who are trying to be helpful.
Take this situation to a non-tech level and Mr. Taylor would have a pretty rough time explaining his actions to the Mayor.
But know, when there's computers involved "it's all right I don't know anything about computers/websites/servers so I'm sure Jerry did what he had to do, and he had to be aggressive because there were 'hackers' involved"
I'm stunned. - crackez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22For someone who claims to know a lot about computers, this guy is a god damn idiot. It's too bad gov't workers never get fired for incompetency, because I would imagine that if they did then Jerry would have never been in a position to create this situation in the first place.
At least the idiots of the world give us diggers some to digg, but you know that doesn't make feel particulary good about my self for some reason... - invisiblesun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21why doesn't he just apologize and admit his error? i doubt any of us would be interested long after he did that
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Better yet, why doesn't Taylor just shut the hell up instead of proving himself an idiot?
- rakista, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I just sent him a link to http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=23
And encouraged him to donate - SixSider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20My favorite thing is the motto of the Tuttle website: "The Place Where People Grow - Friendly!"
- pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Having spent a year in Roland Oklahoma, I can honestly say this: Just about everyone in Oklahoma is as smart as this guy. Why didn't he ask a McDonalds clerk to give him back his web page? What an idiot. The the newspaper for the town nearest us ( Fort Smith ) was going out of business because nobody could read. Fun times.
- rakista, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Well if we do not punish idiots in charge than they will get more power. What if this guy was working for a nuclear power plant, can you say homer simpson situation? This guy got involved with things he did not understand and he got burned for it, thats what you get when you play with fire.
- rakista, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Well I just blacklisted the city domain at the router for the websites I own, ***** em. I am also adding them to my gmail account spam list and I work on a few open source projects. If they want help they can pay for it.
- daeyeth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Dugg. Great choice of summary by the way, the quote really sets the mood.
I found this digg far more informative than the other one. Odd that this story from Tuttle Times was much more unbiased and accurate than theRegister's write up, which was basically just a BS plug for Taylor's put-on-a-good-face-for-the-press statement. Taylor's and the mayor's ignorance really kills me. It's not just the ignorance alone, it's the fact these guys are just plain ***** (in attitude).
Apparently, if it's on the internet, Taylor thinks he can screw diplomacy (city officials or not). He just totally BASHED the creators of CentOS for no goddamn reason, even after they helped his dumbass fix the website. They had absolutely no blame in this entire situation. I can't believe he commented on how much "free time" they have simply because CentOS is free....un-F-ING-believable....they've been working their asses off for free.
I wonder how many other old, ignorant, conceited white men are in the government?
....wait a second.... - klept, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Read the entire exchange.
Well what can you say if this is Tuttle OK lol?
Jerry has 22 years computer experience? Sounds lilke he is trying to convince himself... 22 years with what, vacum tubes?
Basically Jonny solved his problem after he could finally get through to that ignorant fool. But it took awhile, didnt it, Jonny boy rofl?
Jerry's statements about how much he knows and how much experience he has is a typical assertion from many dummies in the Southern US, particularly if they have amatuer / ham radio licenses Come to think of it, I'd bet Jerry does. And when I talk about the Jerry's of the South, I am not talking about everyone who lives there, especially some of the nice intelligent ladies there who have to put up with people like Jerry.
BTW. Jonny is the one who can sue, both Jerry personally and the City of Tuttle. The legal issue would be civil extortion. Too bad Jerry didnt check with the City corporation counsel - lawyer- before sending those threatning emails - stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16What gets me is that the guy still doesn't realise that Johnny Hughes was not the person who caused the problem and so had no specific obligation to help fix it - it's a bit like getting a few bad fries with your burger at a fast food restaurant, but complaining to Ford because it was one of their trucks that delivered the consignment.
IMHO the guy is a dick and should just apologise. - kmanb182, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19“I was just frustrated,” he said. “I’ve got a strange website coming up, and I don’t know who caused it.” Taylor said that he also did not regret threatening Hughes with FBI action, since he believes that was what prompted Hughes to start treating him seriously."
No ***** Jer, you were the one not listing. - kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Oh this crap really can ruin a person's day. I had done some photography for someone, and instead of waiting until the next day for a CD, they insisted that I send the files via ICQ. So I did. They received the file and a little while later I get an angry phone call from this person's brother (who owned the computer it was sent to) asking me why I "had access to their system folder". *??*
So I gave him the filename of the only file I had sent that day and suggested he search for it. Maybe the file was saved to the last folder he had saved a file to.
He found it, in his system folder, and again asked me why I had placed a file
in his "system folder". I tried to explain that it was up to someone on HIS end
to decide where the file was saved to, not me. I remained calm and helpful. I
tried to explain that I had no way to decide for him where files are saved. I asked
him to download a file from someone else in ICQ and see where it was saved to by default. He refused and told me that if I ever called his number again he would
have me arrested for computer crime and he could do it because his father was
a police officer.
Of course, I had no intention of ever calling that person, or anyone in his immediate family back after all that.
It's amazing what a little FUD and some misplaced technological confidence
can do to a human being like that.
This story isn't all that surprising. Give someone a bit of authority or a degree,
and there's a really good chance they will always default to the delusion of expertise and work out all those pesky facts later on. Cops are like that sometimes, too.
They will walk into a situation and instantly have it all "figured out" and they have
to have reality pounded into their heads by their own superior authority before
they will ever admit they were wrong. And usually these people have a whole bag
of tricks they've been instructed to use in such cases to bend reality to their perception.
So, enjoy your own run-in with these types. They're entertaining later on.
MUCH later on. - NoMoreNicksLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14“The city manager was doing everything he could to protect the website,” Paxton said. “There was no profanity used, nothing vulgar used, just Jerry [Taylor] trying to find out what was going on. He was being aggressive and finding out what happened to the website.”
No, he wasn't. It's like a detective finding a dead body in a Ford, and accusing a FMC executive of the murder. If he had bothered to find out what Centos was through google, it would have been obvious that the guy only makes the software, and that he had nothing to do with that particular instance of it.
The guy jumped to conclusions, based on one link on an innocuous page. He should not have anything to do with city management, who knows how many other, far more expensive, mistakes he makes with logic like that. - rakista, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Send in the black hats!
- enderwig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14From the Apache 2 Test Page Powered by CentOS:
CentOS is an Operating System and it is used to power this website; however, the webserver is owned by the domain owner and not the CentOS Project. "If you have issues with the content of this site, contact the owner of the domain, not the CentOS project."
And the part in quotes is in bold! - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15No, then his email would have said, "OMFG get your stofware off my webpage lol!!!!!!!!!! city oftuttle 4evar!!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15What I don't understand is why doesn't he just admit to his ignorance (no shame in that) and take a few classes on what he's misunderstanding or hire someone to take over the website.
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13My favourite is his "get your software off my webpage!!!!" computer-illiterate fogey language. It's sounds like my mom trying to use the computer: "I clicked the icon program and couldn't send a page on the interweb computer machine..."
