- baronvonrolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12It's a bit weird having the voice of "dave" coming out of the mouth of that woman. Somewhat unnerving.
- commitone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Okay, I just wasted ten minutes of my work time having her say some dirty, erotic things to me. Nice find.
- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You said 'amazing'. Digg has made me loathe that word.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"i likes me some poopy"
she sounds so innocent.
made me LOL.
edit: catherine is about one hundred million times better XD XD XD
/***** - yubpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ugh, i reached the end of the trial!
and i had just gotten her to say "ooooh, baby!" like she meant it! - dhulser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4DUDE

- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Welcome to 2004.
I hate the Oddcast advertisements. I mean, how annoying can an ad get? Very, apparently. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow it's multilanguage.
- MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice if you said why.
- indiekiduk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think AT&T Natural Voice is better quality:
http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php - 5hinmyoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its realistic enough for my girlfriend's cat :D
i typed some commands and her name in, and the animal heeds to its computer master :D
sorry :[ - jonahan52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because the Leopard one is better than this?
- falcon707, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mike and Dave sound the most realistic...
- newbill123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@MaxFact:
Just to add some information to what you said. The Mac debuted with a demo of text to speech. There's an article about it's development on Folklore.org: http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=Intro_Demo.txt
In the mid-nintees Apple added a bunch of voices but many were just novelty items (used in games like Ultima III from Lairware), but they were still very solid improvements over Sam and Fred that had been undeveloped for years. Still, I'd be hard pressed to use any of these right now to read web pages to me to make text-to-speech audio books for my iPod. That is, until Alex makes his debut (the voice coming up in Leopard). Having played around with this voice, I'm very impressed. It's a US male voice that must have been worked on really long (or purchased from someone who did) because it scales to fast speech speeds with very clear diction. I hope that we'll get other voices besides just Alex, but I can see a lot more use of text to speech when I can get it to read PDF's, emails, and text files to me.
If all you want to do today is make cool answering machine messages, here are some bits of text I have used in the past. If you don't have a text editor where you can select a voice, go to System Preferences, Select the Speech panel, and change the default voice to one of the ones below. Then just copy the text to TextEdit and choose Speak Text from under the edit menu. (Don't actually paste in the name of the voice)
Bad News: You have reached an answering machine again. Please leave your name and number after the tone and we'll try to get back to you when we can.
Cellos: There is something that stops us from answering your call right now so please wait for the tone to leave a message.
Good News: No one is available who can answer your important phone call at this point in time. So please leave a message after the tone and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. - mentor972, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I make her say "I have aids!!!"
- bbrockchalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow this works so well that my dog will now obey commands from the computer...awesome
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Audrey is the most realistic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok it worked with konqueror and opera on flash 9
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well really, I bet you'd like us to visit your super-duper-awesome site. Thanks for the link, friend. (I say this to all *****)
- zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2oooooooooooooo, ooooooooo, BAiBii!
- piesforyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally when I see "free" in the title, it makes me click on it faster than you can say "I have no money!!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1doesn't work here. digg effect?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm sure you would.
- falcon707, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Nobody make fun of my title...
- truspark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0are there any decent sounding free text to speech programs out there? the best I can find is the standard Mary.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"MOST-AMAZING", "WOW", "MUST DIGG" and "FREE" among others usually has me reaching for the "SPAM" bury option without second thought now.
- Christia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3...or the least non-realistic...
- TheFinestShadow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2They sound more realistic than other voices but certainly not realistic. And besides, these voices have been around for a long time. I've been using the TTS app at AT&T's website (http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php) which has the same voices. Buried as lame.
- ewc80, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This article reminds me of some of the best computer related fun I have ever had, getting piss drunk with my friends and using Windows built-in text to speech engine to make my computer say the most profane things imaginable. Even better, record the output and email it to your friends and/or random strangers (depends on how drunk you get).
- dotbody, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Agreed. This is the exact same engine and has been around for a while.
- Christia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Patience my friend...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3To bad there is no Indian accent.I love that accent.
- maxfact, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1How about the fact that there's nothing novel or new about this. Computers have come with text to speech applications for DECADES now. These voices are not state of the art. For state of the art check out ATT labs...those sound real.
This webpage does not deserve the attention it will probably get as a result or digg.
I agree, though. Digg down. - maxfact, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Not bad for a web-app, but my desktop computer (Mac) does much better. The voices on this website sound a lot like the Apple voices did in the 1990s. Sorry to be so negative about it, but I just don't see anything innovative here except the animated character speaking the text.
I suppose it is handy for making her say naughty things, though. - corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why doesn't Apple build something like this into Leopard instead of trying to develop their own new text to voice algorithm?
- Pbrane101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0all your base are belong to us
- falcon707, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I submitted that one too (it just didn't have the OMG AMAZING title)... and this one made it to the top. Buried you as lame.
http://digg.com/design/Amazing_AT_T_s_text_to_speech_service_Really_fun_to_play_with - ThreeDee912, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Not to be a complete troll (or Apple fanboy), but Mac OS X has had voices that good for a while now. And that flash face has also been around for a while too.
- commitone, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4digg this down
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+0i would rather have some speach to text u know
