- MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You're telling me... I switched to the (mt) Grid Server service as soon as it launched and dumped my dedicated box. I've been *VERY* disappointed with the level of service demonstrated. Even last night I submitted a ticket about my sites being down, and the response was "it was scheduled downtime, as according to ". Talk about a crappy company (hosting and service wise).
I'm definitely in the market for a new host. Recommendations are welcome... - ezichko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8At least we dont pay for this problems now:
Our records indicate that you recently opened up a support request related to an open incident, wide-spread problem, or known issue relating to (mt) Media Temple's new (gs) Grid-Server system. We want to apologize for the inconveniences this may have caused you.
We are compensating you 3 months of service as a concession for the troubles we may have caused you and your site. No action is required on your part. In the next 24 hours this will appear in your account in the form of a credit.
We will be announcing GRID MASTER RELEASE (v.1.1), and version upgrade which fixed hundreds of bugs and will dramatically improve your overall experience with this system.
(mt) Media Temple wishes to thank you sincerely for your patience during the course of these incidents. We believe the (gs) Grid-Server is an amazing system with new technology that has only begun to reach its real potential. Please look forward to announcements in the next few days relating to our new master release.
Thank you again.
Best Regards,
(mt) Media Temple - mtoigo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I left dreamhost and so did just about everyone else I know due to downtime. (About 2 months ago). The downtime problem had been going on for about 8 months at least. Submitted about a dozen tickets and it never got better. Other than that they are a great host though, but nothing else really matters when your sites are routinely down a few hours a week.
I'm with hostmonster right now and they're uptime has been perfect, but I've had to call there about 5 times to get issues fixed that shouldn't even have been issues in the first place. - rosshosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Remember you get what you pay for though :)
- MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5libbl: Ordinarily I would have to hurt you for making such a comment, but I do have a Dreamhost account that I use for server backups and development hosting. I got my weekly report from my uptime monitoring service earlier today, and while my (mt)-hosted accounts had been down for several hours this week, all my DH accounts were up 100% of the time... God, who would have thought it'd actually come to this?
- jbarket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I also switched to the (gs) when it first came out, but I'm still at least *partially* defensive about all of this.
Don't get me wrong, my service at ASO was vastly superior to this, but compared to the downtime I faced previously at TextDrive and Dreamhost, it's been pretty light.
The real issue seems to be that MySQL takes a complete and total server ***** twice a week. For those of you who read mattbrett.com, it choked like clockwork.
All of my sites, on the other hand, use postgresql, and it hasn't stopped once.
That isn't to say I haven't experienced any problems. The recent email problem plagues me at least once or twice a day, and things occasionally just drop out for 5 minutes all together.
The real problem with the (gs) is that Media Temple is either unable to fix the problem or unwilling to admit there is a problem. I had a single rails app running in the standard container... 64MB I believe... and subversion just quit working. The rails app wasn't even *doing* anything yet... I had barely generated a controller a few days before... and they honest to god told me to upgrade my container. I didn't even think the two would be related, but sure enough after rebooting it, subversion came back to life.
I've always heard good things about Media Temple, and have been very satisfied with my (gs) *when things are working properly*, but I really hope they take this in stride and improve this situation quickly. - fac3less, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Overall the reviews there seem fairly decent -- e.g. nothing too bad said about MT.
With that said I know a number of folks who have been having HUGE problems with the MT grid recently including several sites that have been here on digg before, e.g. logopond.
Hopefully they can fix things so their clients don't get the shaft. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"hundreds" of bugs? In what's supposed to be a stable hosting platform.
That's pretty scary. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ive heard of a couple bugs but hundreds? Wow...
I was thinking about switching to MT as well, but even after reading the article n such, I think ill just jump straight to a pure managed dedicated :/. - MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just checked my email and found "3 Months compensation for GRID related incidents"... How am I supposed to hate them now?
Obviously they do realize that they suck, so maybe I'll stick it out a little longer, just to see... It really is a pain in the ass to keep migrating all this crap anyway. - drivenfaroff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My site has been up and down with the new (gs) system as well. I set up Pingdom to monitor my site after it started failing to connect to the database about 10 different times a day. The outages usually ran for only a few minutes each time but had gotten worse as time went on. The database connection problem seems to be fixed now only to be followed by complete downtime. It always happened at peak times during the day as well, one time being down for over 2 hours. I'll have to send in that support request to get the 3 free months. Other then that their service has always been good and I'm willing to wait out the bugs.
- rosshosman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Meller,
There are some very reputable hosts out there including:
www.steadfast.net
www.pair.com
www.fluidhosting.com
www.asmallorange.com
Check them out. - magreif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So much for "crushing shared hosting" ... I think they crushed their own servers instead !
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like how they don't give you a discount for paying 1 year up front. What a joke.
- rosshosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well ya....but why rackspace, you can find much better deals and save yourself a couple hundred a month. I mean if you absolutely need their managed services then good for you, however if not then go with some place better.
- lopla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Face it folks, you get what you pay for. There is no silver bullet in hosting, no magical $5.00 a month plan that will suit all your needs. I recently got fed up with everything and went with rackspace 138 days ago, my dedicated box runs me about 700 a month (easily covered by my site revenue), and so far 138 days 100% uptime, amazing service etc. So.. i'll never go with a $5.00 or $200.00 a month package again. I learned the hard way but all is well now..
- Recode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been through the whole low cost shared server hosting. It's crap for serious sites. I have many servers at ev1. Have been with them for four years now. Not as expensive as rackspace (since i have no need of server management) but a really good deal if you know what you're doing. What is the result??
755+ days straight of uptime for several of my servers. - planckstudios, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's funny. WebFaction appears down, but it's just that comma that snuck in there - remove it and you're fine...
I was looking at them for their support of python/django...still haven't made up my mind. - someotherguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A Small Orange. They might be a bit pricey, but you get quality service and amazing customer support. :)
- GoClick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I host with WebFaction It's awsome
http://www.webfaction.com/
I have an account and many clients and colligues have accounts it's THE place to host Rappid web apps, Django, Ruby on Rails, Turbo Gears etc. Just go watch some of their screen casts. The service is top notch too. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I signed up for the grid also, on the day that Techcrunch's article came out.
One control panel per account, and the constant downtime made me move to a VPS (knownhost... so far so good). - Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Switched to dreamhost about 6 months ago and I'm happier with them then with other services so far. I have an uptime monitor on one of the sites and I do get reports that there are frequent outages. The times are usually around 3-4 A.M and only last about 10 mins. It used to be every night but now its maybe once a week.
Dreamhosts cpanel SUCKS ASS though. I was real happy with WebIntellects service but it was way to expensive.
overall I think its good though. - dampeal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been seriously thinking of moving to Media Temple.. but I had some concerns with their customer support.. my numerous emails to them were all answered with canned quotes that I could find from their site, even questions that could not possibly be answered by looking at their site were answered by quoting things from their site that actually had nothing to do with my original questions... I guess i can stick with my host for now and deal with it, it sounds like the grid and MT are a bit to good to be true...
- marvinmartian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What, 3 months compensation???
I only got a measly 2 months.
I guess I didn't bitch enough. Next time I will know better. - pveltrent, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Man, Hate away. It's like you go to your favorite burger joint and get sick off the beef & they offer you more crappy burgers.
- Soulhuntre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Serverbeach is an AWESOME dedicated hosting options.
- JSchwage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't forget site5.com. I've been with them for at least a few years now after "host jumping" every few months before switching to Site5. I've been more than pleased with them. Glad I decided not to switch to Media Temple after all.
- AmnestyGenocide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2fedora, dsl, firewall.
I was with (mt) for a grip, but after constant problems finally bit the bullet, spent a few days and now have 300 gigs for ~$40/month as opposed to the paultry 18 gigs for ~$260/month from (mt). - GoodBrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Huh? They totally give a discount for a year prepay. At 11%, it may not be huge, but it is a discount.
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been happy with Network Redux ... the server I'm on has had 99.995% uptime since June, and 100% this month. They offer a ton of services, and keep them relatively up to date. They might not offer obscene amounts of bandwidth and disk space, but what they *do* offer (10GB/250GB) is very solid.
- MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Will do. Thanks for the suggestions. I've heard good things about ASO, but their hosting plans aren't as well priced as is typical these days... Still, if it means not being down 3 hours a day, it's worth it at this point. Thanks again.
- seb0fh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pair.com is a great reliable host. Ugly control panel, brand, etc... and a little lacking in features, but rock solid network connectivity and server stability. Definitely more expensive per GB/Bandwidth than most other hosts out there, but worth it.
- rosshosman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yup pair is great however they are a little bit expensive for dedicateds, if you need one of those try:
www.gigenet.com
www.softlayer.com
www.voxrox.com - petercooper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Getting your own dedicated server is always the best option. Sure, it's the equivalent of servicing and repairing your own car.. but despite that learning curve (and think how many men DO service their own cars) it means you know you're not getting ripped off and screwed around when you take it into the shop.
- polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1bluehost is 999gb transfer a month..............dirt cheap.....comes with lots of goodies...supports just about everything
- xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The problem with these budget hosts is that they have perfect uptime until they don't. I've switched hosts 4 different times based on suggestions by friends, but they all fail one time or the other.
It really makes we want to just go the whole hog and buy a managed server at Rackspace or Server Beach. - indranil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone looking for a good solid host should check out segpub.com.au
Simply great for Ruby hosting. - coti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What you say about http://www.mosso.com/
I'm thinking to buy some host from them. - intheory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I got tired of people making fun of my hostitcheap.com hosted site for $5 a month, so I moved to (mt) some months ago for a few bucks more a month. Then the (gs) promises started, so I stuck around even though there was no PHP5. Then (gs) came around and it was basically a 100% price increase and I've seen a definate decrease in performance. The custom control panel is nice, but I'd just as soon manage my sites via xterm if the db connection was reliable. I think I may end up going back to hostitcheap. For $5 a month it does nearly all I need.
- cheznoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is stupid? This is like saying, the water company can't deliver me any water, but man what a deal!!! I am going to dehydrate waiting around for water to be delivered, but screw it!
Those of use who run sites that consist more than pictures of our dogs, have left MT already. The downtime was daily when i left, and at that time they were still insisting it wasn't "the grid".
I did get a nice added bonus, even after cancelling with them - they charged me the next month anways. I guess they had their billing system on the grid... - rocoso, on 01/13/2009, -0/+0that looks good and all but expensive. I dont think i need all those features. Im happy with directadmin at www.itweblab.com its just simple and effective.
- moneyman1978, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow Media Temple sure is getting hosed here. I am glad that i know its not where they colo all their hardware. I do know they are upgrading most of their servers to new servers hopefully all their issues are resolved.
- bohemicus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I must say that despite their downtimes the MT GS is still the best option for me. I've been with them for 2 months and got the same outages as everyone else - no emails about free service...yet. But where else could I get unlimited domains, SSH, 100GB of space, 1TB of transfer for a measly $20 a month. It is slower than it could be but by the end of the day I am getting my money's worth and if they ever do get their act together and live up to their promises - it will be a hosting revolution.
- Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3BTW - one of the other reasons I like dreamhost is because of their blog. They are very open about their company and the route they are taking. They also have a good support system IMO.
- dbase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Softlayer is a great company. Support and network are top notch. I have several servers with them.
In hosting is is often not a good choice to go with a large company because they simply do not care about the customers. Small companies lack experience and cannot be trusted. My advice is to go with a reputable mid level company for your hosting needs. - oalberic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Since everybody is plugging their favorite host I'll plug mine: WebFaction http://www.webfaction.com
- streaky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Should review them at http://hostjury.com/reviews/media-temple/ if you've had a bad experience.
- HigherLogic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm happy with my host (http://crucialwebhost.com) and I typically do 4-5k unique per day. I mainly like it for the PHP5 and RoR (still playing around with that one). Uptime reports are showing 99.8% for this month, and 100% for last three months. I wonder if it could handle the digg effect though? Maybe I'll find out one day *lol*
PS - For those using Pingdom, how do you like it? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2http://www.netfirms.com
I really like them, no downtime that I've noticed and very good support. - rdelon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I think that WebFaction (http://www.webfaction.com) also deserves a mention as a reputable host. The shared hosting plans have stood the test of Digg and Slashdot multiple times: http://blog.webfaction.com/handling-the-digg-effect-on-a-standard-shared-hosting-account
