- H2SO4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24I too do not mind these lists, save me time searching on my own. Why people get upset - I don't know. It's takes more effort to complain than just move on to the other stories. I guess some people feel they are self-appointed Dupe-cops, get back to elf slaying people, some of us don't see the stories the first time around.
- Avengelist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Although many of these types of lists get posted, I check them all out, as i've usually found at least one thing that is useful to me that I've not seen before.
- Utopian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It's probably a case of "I know this already, therefore I am superior to you... and I'm going to make sure you know it."
Or something like that. - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18Your prose is as purple as the frames of Dame Ednas' glasses. Curse this monochromatic moderation malady.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -13/+24Sorry, this here is really a better list for macs. Bury that one if you'd like.
http://www.macrecon.com/the-ultimate-mac-software-list/ - djpearman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Scrolling down the list, I was intrigued by the types of programs listed. It starts off with 'Web Browser', but the next 8 are all programs that you don't really want to use but have to use - virus and spyware scanners, intrusion detection programs, etc. That just goes to show how wrong the computing world is these days - we need to put in so much effort and processing power into just keeping our computers up and running, rather than spending this time and effort on using computers productively.... That's sad.
I don't mean this as a diss of the list - I think it's an interesting read, it's just something that struck me while reading it. - Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11They are indeed freeware utilities, but they are far from being "best ever." If anyone has a truly great list or useful utils, post them here.
I particularly like Launchy, which is a Windows keystroke launcher. (kind of "Spotlight" for Mac.) The following isn't spam, as I could care less whether you visit the site or not...but if you want to check it out:
http://launchy.net/ - Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -0/+9o thanks - i thought i was supposed to click on all of them
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I usually find such lists no use at all, but this one has several utils I haven't seen before and will be checking out.
- beckerist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7or they're dicks whose opinions are not explicitely represented by the given link, therefore feel they must complain to the world that they and they alone are right, while the rest of us are purely insane!
- changyang1230, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Read carefully, it didn't even claim that IE is the best.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is about freewares. It is not an open source software list, dammit!
- nclbbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I also would recommend launchy, very handy it is.
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -0/+6Ive done fine without firewall & virusscanner for years' post yet and my IP is xx.xxx.xx.xxx
- vibez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So how does loading up IE inside firefox prove that his statement that "sites will be broken and will require you to fire up IE" is wrong?
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You didn't get dugg because that might be the worst headline I've ever read in my life.
Oh...also because you don't spell your name with an 'h.' - ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+493 Best Homebrew Beer Software
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -0/+4am i the only one that thought he should have pushed a little further to get 50?
- Xanin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Just ignore the sponsored links!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Verily, methinks some peasant has won a few brass crowns by selling the locals a booke of dictionary.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Alas, mine ruse hath been uncovered. Thankfully thou thinkest the dictionary dictated those delightful ditties. Nay, I exclaim! The thesaurus was to blame.
- blackb0x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Now if someone would just make a decent, freeware webcam software with basic features.
- MaSC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's actually just a re-badged version of the kaspersky Anti-Virus, which is one of the best AVs. I doubt any AOL hands even touched the code.
- yourowndisaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Direct Miror - Original site slowing down.
http://www.yourowndisaster.com/mirror/www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm - ccgnome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These dupe police just amaze me. When a quality site has new material of course it should be dugg again. Clearly others agree - this site currently has the most diggs of any site dugg this week. It's not dupes that count dudes, it's the value and freshness of the material.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Information == money. Unfortunately you have to turn your computer into a vault nowadays...
- Xanium4332, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps give Synergy a try...
Synergy is a cross-platform KVM with Clipboard support
It allows you to use a single keyboard and mouse, connected to a computer, to control multiple PC's over the network. Runs on Linux, Windows, and has partial support MAC (no image clipboard copy, only text).
It works simply by extending your desktop, just drag your mouse of one screen to the other, and carry on working...
Highly recommend it...
(BTW. I'm not associated with Synergy at all in any way, I'm just a nice user who is just replying to a request). - adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2AVG, like every other AV utility, is like a condom. They will protect you most of the time, but once in a while one will break.
Avast is quite good but rather resource intensive. I felt more secure with Avast but switched to AVG because I needed the extra speed and I have healthy computing habits. - MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Here we go again... the monthly "my freeware list is bigger than yours".
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You've got some meaty content but your site is UGLY. Your categories need categories since there are so many, and they appear secondary to the cute guestbook thing in the very middle of the page. The most promenant feature of the front page are the "Digg it" and "Del.icio.us" and "KB Search" (?) links which smacks of narcissism. The tables listing software are simplistic and the font is too small.
I know design is secondary to content - especially for such techy stuff - but plain white HTML with unordered lists would be better than the design you purposefully put in. It looks like 1997's best.
Sorry to say, but someone had to. Your hard work in collecting this useful software goes to waste when people have difficulty using your site. - OverloadUT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IE still works though. You can use it to browse 99% of the web. Competent means "adequate but not exceptional" which IE definitely is.
I am a Firefox user myself because as a power user it can do a lot more for me that I need. However, I hate this animosity thing that has become rampant these past couple years. Whatever happened to "to each his own"? - Prelude76, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5its just the sloppy writing that is to blame. When you click on Best Free Browser, IE is mentioned first, but its mentioned in a negative way, and right after, Firefox is mentioned as a good 'alternative'.
so really, i have absolutely NO CLUE what the writer thinks is the best free browser. :) it just reads like a babbling fool spewing facts and commentaries he read on other sites, and forces you to follow non-linked footnotes to find a list of websites to visit near end of article. who the hell dugg this page? - kcoyote, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very useful site
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IvanB thanks for Digging this, AWESOME, thanks
- jd_digger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hate it when sites that I've known about forever get thousands of diggs!
Then I say "why didn't I submit that!" - Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I would be more impressed if there were screenshots included.
- mistajon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spyrochaete,
Thanks very much for the comment on my site. I have taken your suggestions into consideration and have made some changes. I just needed someones constructive POV on my site design etc as you said. Some people may not want to hear the honest truth however I do appreciate yours :) - Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To be fair, at least the guy behind this has been straight-up enough to develop this list in a way such that it's easy for us to distinguish the sponsored listings. I mean, it'd be a lot less effort for him to've simply integrated the commercial list and the organic one, and I'm sure he'd've got a bunch more clicks if he did.
- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@rafgar-"Windows Defender as the best anti-spyware choice? Maybe before Microsoft started monkeying with it and making it soft on spyware."
I still have Spybot/AdAware/ewido/Spyware Doctor which I run once in a while just for fun. Since I got DEFENDER all of them catch nothing but an occasional tracking cookie....Defender defends. - inactive, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1That's great find

http://www.r563.com - schwal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2apparently everyone still thinks agv works. so did i. it doesnt. i got infected with it fully updated and scanning. installed zonealarm, problem solved. i've got no clue about avast though. could work.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Believe it or not, it's a good program. MS just bought it from Giant so it's still the same quality as it was before, just rebranded.
- HonoredMule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, but a KVM isn't what I want...a cross-platform NETWORK clipboard APP is.
- wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1tcp optimizer? wtf?

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1neither is that crap
- izomiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm surprised at how many of the items on that list were maintainance/security related. Given, I would consider those to be essential Windows software, but they aren't programs that make Windows a better OS than its alternatives. (That's not to say that it is better, but I think we can all agree that software availibility is Window's strong point.)
IMHO, some of the nicer Windows programs are listed at http://www.pricelessware.org/ and http://tinyapps.org/weblog/ . A few of my personal favorites are Powermenu, Process Controller (based on one of my favorite BeOS apps), BitComet (uTorrent is nice too), TMail, LeechFTP, IrfanView, VirtualDub, TreeWalk DNS, LiteStep, Proxomitron, Naviscope, Rainlendar, ePSXe, ArsClip, FreeOTFE, FoxIt Reader, Streamripper (cross platform), and Arachnophilia (Java). -
