- thesauce, on 12/27/2008, -1/+19Had a G1 for about a month now, and I'll admit it's not as nice as the iPhone and it lacks some of the great apps on the iTunes store, but as a nerd and programmer it is a way more interesting phone for me to play around with. I have a feeling that Android (and the G1's) full potential will be realized in about 6 months from now and I'll be glad I didn't sell my phone
- ggypsy, on 12/26/2008, -2/+19Locale is almost good enough to make me buy a G1. By itself.
- Theli, on 12/27/2008, -1/+11Google doesn't make hardware.
- rusty0101, on 12/27/2008, -3/+12Loved the last comment, will re-phrase it though...
"I love the idea of iPhone, but until it's available on more hardware I'm finding it difficult to care."
Why the re-phrase? Android _will_ be on more hardware, iPhone won't. - Xplorer, on 12/27/2008, -2/+11Can't wait for Android to get a little more steam behind it....And better hardware!
- xChunk, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8It's missing, 'Hello AIM!'
- Ratatosk, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6wikitude is absolutely astonishing... the future is here
- rusty0101, on 12/27/2008, -0/+5I think this may be device or software release specific. I've been using the GPS on my phone in 'map' mode without any problems now. Granted I may not be getting the precision of a surveyors GPS, but considering updates only show up every second anyway, I'm not all that disapointed.
- ZincSaucier, on 12/27/2008, -2/+7how about "The 10 Best Android Apps."
- DickyT83, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4It would be on there if it didn't disconnect you every time you try and do something else on the phone.
- nbouma, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3what?
- LocalDocal, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3The amazing thing about this is that the phone's hardware is actually made by HTC, which seems strange to me. HTC traditionally makes very badass phones with incredibly high specs and usually very stylish; the G1 seems to be the opposite of the phones HTC traditionally makes.
Hell, the phone I own right now is an HTC phone, and the G1 is only somewhat better than it, despite the fact that my phone is two years older than the G1. - Lyght, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4...and when you're on the street, depending on the street, I bet you are definitely in the top three.
- rusty0101, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4I'm sure it exists elsewhere, but with the haptic response makes the 'bubble wrap' app almost a must have. It's not quite as satisfying as real bubble wrap, but...
- NerveBand, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Stop connecting on wifi. Android disconnects from wifi (just like an ipod touch/iphone) when you go to sleep. The disconnection on 3g/edge was fixed.
- booyahbitch, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3I had an iPhone for a year, gave it to my wife, it was groovy and all, and she enjoys it. I am now waiting on my new G1...supposed to be here monday...I am frothing at the mouth! I believe the G1 is more targeted at the more technically adept crowd. Like I said, the iPhone was cool, but I think the G1 will be better suited to my tastes. I like someone above would like to see a bit smaller foot print on the hardware, but, hey, early adopters always get screwed, right?!? :o)
- DickyT83, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3Oh no *****? Last I tried it out like a week ago it was still doing it. Good to know, guess I'll reinstall.
- fuckinlogin, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2The GPS/aGPS on G1 is actually pretty good I have found (at least in London where I live). I don't even enable the GPS most of the time, the wireless network triangulation usually is enough to find my location with a decent accuracy. Right now I am indoors and it places me right outside on the other side of the road 10-15m from where I actually am.
Turning on the GPS (outside, since it needs a clear view of the sky) makes the location more accurate usually. Comparing to my friends' Nokia N95 and iPhone 3G, I seem to get better results.
The only issue with GPS on G1 is that it drains battery life faster when it is ON all the time. But personally I find I can track my location quite accurately when I use it to go around areas I am not familiar with or for location-aware apps. - meghalc, on 12/27/2008, -2/+4I am waiting for a differant platform without a physical keyboard and thinner. G1 seems to be a trial run hardaware from Google...
- henrik.falk, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3I have great hope for them thare gPhones.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -2/+4It seems to me that the best apps in that list are copies of things that have been available for the iphone for some time. So don't slam the iphone too hard, it's where pretty much all of your android innovation is coming from.
- DomZy, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Does anyone know of an iPhone type app like that barcode one?
- Anand999, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Alot of these things have existed before iPhone and G1, albeit in cruder forms of course: the bar code scanner (there have been apps to do price comparisons based on bar codes for a while, though in older incarnations you had to input in the bar code), the song identifier (I remember a friend who just bought a Cingular Blackjack many years ago showing this off), the "Locale" app (in the times before GPS on phones was a common thing, apps used the LAC and CID the phone was attached to in order to guess where you were at).
People are just using the iPhone's capabilities to evolve these functions further and now people are using Android's inherently more open design to take things to the next level. - fuckinlogin, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2In terms of hardware spec can you name a single one that is better on the iPhone compared to the G1? It's more ugly, that's for sure, but it has better hardware and is more functional.
The only thing I can think of is no multitouch on the screen. But the screen is actually a Synaptic screen just like the iPhone and iPhone 3G. The hardware is capable of multitouch, it's just commented out in the driver code. If you recompile that it does multitouch fine. The reason it is not enabled is that while Synaptic owns patents for multitouch technology, Apple has managed to convince the retarded US Patents Office that they own "gestures"... So no phone can use simple natural gestures like moving two fingers apart to zoom or pinching without the threat of Apple suing. With more multitouch capable phone coming out next year, it's only a matter of time before this ridiculous patent is challenged in court, however. - ricopicouk, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3iphone camera is too poor to capture the barcode at a high enough resulution.
The only possible solution would to be employ some kind of image stitching type process, either way its not going to match up to the android equivalant which has a much better camera. - oblique63, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2technically It's been available for a lot longer, I mean all of those apps that entered google's Developer contest were made just using the emulator pretty much if I'm not mistaken... but yeah, since it didn't really have a chance to develop any sort of market share until the G1 came out, your comment is still valid ;)
- Anand999, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Android apps can actually replace the stock apps, not just sit along side them. For example the SMS app in this article can completely take the place of the default SMS app. You can remove the default SMS app once you have it installed if you want. Smart phone OSes before Android could only augment the stock functionality with 3rd party utilities, not replace it.
- fuckinlogin, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2The app store is free until January 15. Half the winners from the contest are not even on there, the best apps won't make an appearance until developers can start charging for apps on the 15 January in two weeks.
- Burrito, on 12/27/2008, -1/+2It's a first generation product. They are always overpriced and shoddy.
- Benjigga, on 12/27/2008, -1/+2Horrible title. A more appropriate one would be:
"The 10 Best Android Apps of The Last Two Months The OS Has Been Available" - burn0u7, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1lol seriously? I went down to the retail store and picked one up that day.
I tell you what - you will love this phone. just remember though - more stuff you have turned on faster your battery will drain. i picked up a spare battery just because. I also have a 8gb microSD card in it too.
2 things i dont like though - no exchange push (needed for my job) and no Remote Desktop (terminal Services) client. VNC just doesnt cut it. - fuckinlogin, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1Wait another couple of weeks when apps can be charged for, then you'll see more apps from the contest (not all of them are on the Android Market yet) and other apps who's devs have been holding out until they can charge for apps on the 15th of January.
- meghalc, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1You are right about HTC making the hardware. But Google does design it..
- Dylson, on 12/27/2008, -1/+2Its like... beta software. NOWAY! GOOGLE?
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -3/+3sounds amazing i want that now
- MisterPoppy, on 12/28/2008, -0/+0I'm hoping for '09 to bring the kickass Android phone that can't be beaten. The G1 was a start...I'm betting one of the next models is going to be the one too good to pass up, though.
- jamesmcm, on 12/27/2008, -7/+6Those apps look great, it's a shame the hardware is so overpriced and shoddy compared to the iPhone though. I suppose that is one benefit to Apple's approach of making the hardware and software, you can be sure both work well together.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -2/+1What next level? So far all I've seen from the Android is crappy battery life, mostly shoddy software (though admittedly some very interesting things as well), and T-Mobile's spotty service in the northeastern US.
- linkinpark342, on 12/27/2008, -2/+1Not sure why pee's getting buried. I think he meant he's waiting for one of the other android phones to come out?
- DickyT83, on 12/27/2008, -6/+4If you're looking for some good fiction to read during some down time, check out the AcroBible Lite app.
- aserer511, on 12/27/2008, -4/+2so basically, all 10?
- peestandingup, on 12/27/2008, -8/+4It makes use of GPS, which from what I hear a lot, sucks on the G1 & cant find you half the time. Even when outside.
I'll wait until a better device comes out. - patrick24601, on 12/27/2008, -6/+1I didn't know that the Android even had 10 applications yet.
- mount1234, on 12/27/2008, -9/+1android? You are correct still a very very very very long way to go...... PCs are not yet that too high tech still there are some bugs. Even other gadgets...so android would be a thousand to million years to go before it happen.
