- SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33Or Windows in general, only works on Linux ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Darn it, my 2.8Ghz PC with 512meg ram dosen't even meet the system requirments for the Upgrade Advisor tool...
- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Why is it a ***** installer???
- optikburn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I'm using Linux on a 2.8GHz CPU with 768MB RAM, nVidia 128MB video.. and I want to switch to Vista.. but the Advisor doesn't run on Linux.. oh well, maybe I'll just stick with Linux for a while..
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Are you sure it says Vista Ready? There are a lot of sneaky "Vista Capable" stickers floating around. My laptop sticker said Vista Capable, but it was Vista Ready once I added another 512MB of RAM.
I think every case with a power supply is Vista Capable. It's just a matter of what else you put in it. :P - sunnyd71, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13ATi has a much better Vista compatibility tool. It shows minimum, recommended and optimal compatibility plus it's online, no installer.
http://www.ati.com/technology/windowsvista/GetReady.html - rageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Or Windows XP SP 1.
- Kahnza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12The only things it said I need to do is uninstall Nero and find a new driver for my onboard sound. Otherwise everything else is perfect. But I think I'm gonna wait until they release a few major patches before I consider getting Vista. I mean seriously. Its Microsoft. Its gonna be LOADED with bugs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Doesn't run on Windows 2003 Std Svr either.
- djliquidice, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16***** vista. i'm going to cling on to XP (i haven't had a virus or spyware issue since 2000) until i'm forced to move by my own personal software needs. I hate the fact that MichaelSoft has to build such a FAT ASS OS. 15GB? Get the hell out of here. Part of the reason the requirements are sooo high are to help boost lagging PC and PC Parts sales.
- BlueLander, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13It's nice to know that the software for both my Microsoft mouse and my Microsoft keyboard will no longer work. Who needs input when you have Aero Glassss?
- therernospoons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Just a heads up, the Vista Upgrade Advisor does not work for XP x64 systems, that is the installer rejects the system.
- DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9this tool was on some of the BETA versions of vista as well, so its not a new completly new tool its been there for a while.
but i guess its good that they made it so you can just download it. - striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Just fyi it requires SP2. This program also told me i needed a dvd rom drive to install vista, yet i HAVE a dvd drive, it shows up in my computer and everything lol. What really sucks is that i thought this app would give me my vista "performance score" from 1-5 and it doesnt, it just says what you can use in vista and recommends a version based on your current version of windows :|
- Desidarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Screw that, unless I get a job that requires a program that only runs in Vista, I will keep using XP until most programs no longer support it. At that point I go linux. (probably safe to say I have at least several years before that will be an issue)
- Medusausi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10South Park General: "[Bill Gates], you told us Windows 98 would be faster and more efficient, with better access to the internet."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfuV2ZPOul8 - s14sh3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I ran it and it says mine is ready, but I have to remove Alcohol 120 because of compatibility issues. I think I'll be running XP for a while.
- codgod04, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Sorry, you must run Setup on Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista".
(from the installer)
excuse me? it requires you to run it on Vista, just to see if your computer can RUN Vista?
anyone else see something wrong with this picture? way to go, MS!!!!!!!!! - Soulhuntre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah. The nerve of those guys expecting you to install the free update thats more than a year old. Heres a plan, complain it doesn't run under Dos 3.0 either. While your at it, don't install the updates then complain it's insecure.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Anybody tried it on Wine? Just wondering if it does anything stupid like the piracy checking program does.
- natemc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9That was awesome, I've never had my computer lock up so quickly ever before! Thanks Microsoft, whenever I need to make my computer stop functioning, I'll be sure that run that tool.
- archerx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7yay my computer from 2003 can run vista... (I did a few upgrades... :P )
- Soulhuntre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If only they had tested it - by say having a few hundred thousand people running for months int he wild with some sort of automated problem reporting tool.
Oh wait. They did. - frankiejr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is pretty funny. Under "System" it reads "Upgrade your video card - Your current video card will not support the Windows Aero™ user experience."
But then in the "Devices" tab it states that there was no problem found with my video card. Heh. - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Support for XP from MS is slated to stop by 2012
This date may change and your mileage may vary... - Makurosu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9My computer isn't Vista ready. Oh well. I guess I'll have to use an OS that's more compatible with my computer.
- ChrisGranger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think what he means is the compatibility tool shouldn't require an install but run as an .exe file...
- Demagogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, you kind of have to do that with just about every software release... Developers never get it right the first time.
- HiDeoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Dont't work on my computer with XP pro :s
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe if they'd spent more money on development and less on funding the legal harrassment of Linux through SCO:
http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=2006100801442692
all these years, they'd have a better product that wouldn't need to be tested by now. - conwayblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My computer is Vista ready but there are dozens of compatibility issues with programs and hardware I have installed. Thanks to this program I won't be upgrading. Thanks M$.
- Chrysalid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6A long, long time ago we used to be hardware for which we had to figure out how to get it working with an operating system... now Vista is soon here and we have to figure out the same thing, vice versa.
Anyone else see a hardware manufacturer conspiracy emerging here? It seems users have to buy at least $200 worth of new parts in order to run Vista with a decent speed. - giloron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Maybe for the usability features. The new address bar is nice. Being able to type a program name in the start menu instead of digging through a ton of folders is very useful. Having independent volume controls for each application will be handy for gamers I think.
These are the reasons I'm upgrading. There are other improvements that might be more important to you.
Go download a beta and play around with it for a while. You just might like it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I`m still gonna wait for quad-core CPU`s and DirectX 10 cards. Vista is going to be an awesome gaming platform. All 360 peripherals work on it including wireless.
- Soulhuntre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As someone running Vista with both a MS keyboard and mouse (and I knwo your being sarcastic) I'll say for the record, don't worry about it. All the extra keys and buttons work perfectly.
BTW - this is also true of all the special keys and features of the Dell laptops I have it on, even without loading their drivers either. - sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's nice to know up front if the massive beta upgrade you just did on your system is going to ruin your drive. It's a good thing.
- gheide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony UX-180p (Vista CAPABLE sticker on box) ... requires DVD drive (didn't come with any drive) and the required HD space is LARGER than the drive that came with it... very capable indeed.... so slick marketing trick, or C.A.L.S.??
ca‧pa‧ble

—Idiom
2. capable of,
a. having the ability or capacity for: a man capable of judging art.
b. open to the influence or effect of; susceptible of: a situation capable of improvement.
c. predisposed to; inclined to: capable of murder. - tride, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It will not work if you don't have the .NET framework installed
- striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No, thats the same message i got, it just means you don't have SP2 or better. Theoretically Vista DOES have the components in sp2 lol.
- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thing sunny recommends is good: I can see that my computer passes the minimum and recommended specs, for instance, except for free disk space, and that I don't have the optimum video card. Thanks!
- Darkness123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Thanks for the direct link, I am going to test it now. Probably will say I need to upgrade.
- theonlyvlad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*sigh* I just think the disk space checker is a completely pointless part of this. It basically says my system "fails" just because of that one item. Well, duh I odnt have enough disk space. I run a laptop and things are kind of tight. But a lot of space is taken up by Win XP... When I install Vista I'll free up the space and everything will be fine. Don't tell me to buy a bigger hard drive. Just stupid.
- drakonite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The question is not whether the computer is compatible with Vista... It's whether Vista is compatible with the computer.
- m0laria, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3RC Release = Release Candidate Release?
- rogerbannister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The program runs in .NET, so you would want Mono.
- sk545, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, the best way to kill them is to not buy it. But then again, when does anyone here actually buy a windows OS?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Vista: a $400 downgrade advisor for Windows XP SP2.
- dumpstergames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks it took me like 5 minutes to find the link in the article. They've hid it inside their article basically forcing people to read what they have wrote.
