My Chevy Nova won't explode on contact, so is that a reason to keep driving a Pinto? Same logic. Let's take this all apart so you and others can understand the complaint.
1. Opera, Safari, and Konqueror (3.5.1 ) all pass the acid II test. No verifiable errors.
2. Firefox and Mozilla pass all aspects of Acid II that are a part of the standard. They do not pass those aspects of the test not yet integrated into the standard.
3. IE 6.0 failed acid I let alone pass or at least seem to pass Acid II. Hence the nickname bloody IE, all it gives you is one large red screen so if it does pass any single aspect it is not obvious visually. It is incapable of even rendering the images.
4. IE 7.0 fails the acid II in exactly the same visual manor as IE 6.0
5. In defense of MS IE 7.0 is layout complete. Meaning that the only thing MS claims is finished is the layout of the buttons. So it would seem that this indicates that the underpinnings (such as the rendering engine) are still IE 6.0, this could explain why it fails in the same manor. It's nothing more than a skin. (Download a skin it will respond better and work better *grin*)
6. Professional we developers hat IE because it's a constant battle to make things in the standard, that customers want work. For every one hour you spend developing the feature you spend 5 hours coding hacks for IE and it's multiple versions (Yes there are different versions of 6.0 carrying the same version number publicly)
7. Netscape 4.0 (remember that?) actually did better at passing at least some aspects of acid II than IE. In fact Netscape3.0 and IE 3.0 can at least render the images somewhere on the screen. (Somewhere in my CD pile I have copies of my original win95 install disk and could run the test again maybe, if I can find hardware to run it on.)
Given the above, the desire by the consumer is to have a standards compliant, quality piece of software, from MS. I don't feel that the public is wrong to hold MS to established standards that they had a heavy hand in creating. (Most aspects of CSS2 and the next gen 3 are MS proposals.) You perhaps feel different. So it goes. - akifbayram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The code the guy gave on his blog is wrong, use the link Kevinmtu gave and get the code from there guys.
Here it is again

THanks Kevin! : ) - kevinmtu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Link to the original article....
http://weblogs.asp.net/jgalloway/archive/2005/12/28/434132.aspx
I am having trouble running it....McAfee is throwing some interesting errors when I go to a menu. Other than that it is working fine... - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Has anyone tried this? Does it really work without messing up your system completely?
- fredclown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm so tired of hearing about Acid 2. Firefox does not pass Acid 2 and for good reason. Much of what is in Acid 2 is not part of the scecs. It is only recommendation. Molly Holzschlag of the WASP has even stated public that whenever they decide to do Acid 3 they will do it differently. Instead of trying to test bleeding edge technology they will try to be more cooperative with the browser makers to create a truly good test. Get of the Acid 2 kick. It is a flawed test.
- xiongchiamiov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Because we web designers have to start hacking our code so it will actually *work* in IE7. It's hard enough with 6, but we have to if it's what we do for a living.
- Yoda716, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I love it when he(http://weblogs.asp.net/jgalloway/archive/2005/12/28/434132.aspx) says this
"Don't close the DOS window down or your pancreas will implode." - SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Why would I want to waste my time doing this? Why would anyone want to interupt the flow of the universe? And have TWO Internet Explorer's on their computer *shudder*
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is stupid. IE 7 is better then IE 6, so why not just install it?
- trovster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@linuxrebel - IE7 is 'layout complete' this doesn't mean the 'position of the buttons', it means the rendering engine updates are complete. The team have released the 'layout complete' version early so us web developers can find any problems and find solutions, such as the easy clearing solution. The CSS implementation in the MIX IE7 release is rendering / 'layout complete' finished. They are, however, going to change the GUI, as they really really need to!
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Or you can keep using firefox
- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Worked fine for me until I decided to uninstall it, then it didn't load any pages at all. Fine, since it wasn't on a production system and also Firefox was installed (still worked). Many people decide to use it for production and get bit in the ass when they were warned, don't be one of those users.
- Helixlab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Doing Ctrl+N to open a new a new window, and typing in urls in either browser can cause problems.
- Tyrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Comment system uses a IE6 hack, IE7 doesn't support the hack any longer
- frontpage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1magic
- frontpage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's extremely practical. I like it
- shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the point isn't speed... the point is using it along side an IE6 install
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Me too. I like FF but honestly if something leaner with better features comes along I'll move.
IE 7 is slower on my laptopp PIII900 and the interface just sucks to all hell. Oh and scrolling is completely slow and jumpy. Funny how no other browser in existence including IE 6, Avant, Opera, and FF has NO problesm with scrolling.
At least they finslly gave me my link bar back. Yea, that was really smart guys, make the links we all visit constantly hard to access via sub-menu. - beejay54, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Is anyone else really disapointed by IE7? I installed the beta a few days ago only to see that they didn't really fix anything, just re-skinned and added un-necessary features to a rendering engine that STILL needs some tweaks. Alpha channels are now natively supported though as they are in mozilla browsers, which is nice.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hmm. I don't see the point in having both installed.
It's not hard to install IE7 over IE6 and then uninstall it and use IE6 again.
It seems like having two ***** browsers is just rediculous. - patwillson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dunno I really like the "new" IE7. it renders pretty good, there are some issues, but firefox has some issues also... I agree though, the entire security features on IE7 are confusting and not very usefull.
- mib1969, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you want to safely install/test *anything*, just pick up a copy of VMware Workstation (for developers) or VMware Server (currently free), build a "template" VM and clone it for anything you want to test. It's like having dozens of spare machines around just in case you want to play with something that might mess up your system (like any beta software). Uninstalling your "test" environment is as simple as dragging a few files to the trash can.
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In concept, it's a good idea for testing. I use virtual machine instead.
- SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I forgot about that one... whoops. Well if all you guys would band together against IE, and only work for the good of Mozilla then Supremacy of the TRUE geeks would rule the world.
- mirzmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not just in concept. Any serious web designer/developer will need to test on both browsers, just as many had to test on IE 5.x for the longest time after IE 6 was released.
IE 6 will not disappear overnight, so it still needs to be supported. An interesting thought though -- maybe the requirement for a 2nd machine/vitual machine running a different installation of windows with a different version of IE will help to kill IE 6 faster? - Corrosionx, on 02/16/2008, -0/+1Cross-browser compabilityis a nightmare for web designers , and if you install IE7, you lose IE6
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've downloaded and installed IE 7 Beta 2, unfortunately, digg and the comments system dosen't work too well with it. Hope Digg/Microsoft (dunno who's to blame) sort it out.
- Mcaruso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A development version of Firefox already passes Acid2 (http://diary.e-gandalf.net/2006/04/12/meet-mr-face/).
- Donut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1will this work on my system? because i have SP1 , so it wont let me install IE7beta on it in the first place.
- jaxxstorm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Something better than FF has been around a while...it's Opera 9 Beta
- therernospoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I should have known. It F-ed up my system just like the last so called IE standalone fix. Now, everytime I try to open an address in IE6, it forces the page to load up in Firefox. A good thing, maybe yes, but no more windowsupdates. Thanks, but no thanks--I am never trying these again! Now the only way to fix this is a reinstall!!
- ziadoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps you should try it before you bitch. It installs and uninstalls fine. Stop being a stereotypical Microsoft hater and learn to form your own opinions instead.
- ph3rny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is so old....
there is a better way to do this that won't f*** up your address bar that was out a long time ago.....
kinda funny that this was dugg because it was on googleblog but it wasn't dugg on the other guys blog - ionut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IE7 requires Windows XP SP2.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Listen, when will people learn that you can't expect to install beta software and expect it to be bug free. There are always bugs and in IE7B2 there are plenty. (Oddly though it seems to be much more unstable than betas of Opera or Firefox. Funny that.) To be safe always back up your system, preferrably ghost your system partition, install the beta and when it crashes or screws up, just restore your ghost, but please don't come crying to the techies when you can't uninstall it or it's hosed your system.
- mirzmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Some might justifiably argue that IE 7 is *not* better than IE 6. I've heard that its standards support, while better than IE 6, does not bring it up to par with Firefox et al.
Here are a couple of more reasons why IE 7 might not be worth it:
http://www.emailbattles.com/archive/battles/browsers_aaddgijjba_de/
I think you'll find Daniel Glazman's UI review most interesting since it illustrates all the ways in which IE7's UI is *worse* than IE6:
http://glazman.org/ie7b2/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You want to install a third party kludge of a beta software from microsoft? Good luck to you, and try to post again after you reinstall your OS.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem with this is that the Tab Bar won't show up, and looking at advanced in Options crashes IE7.
I thought it was my end, but his screeshots don't show the pagebar either. - dreamkatcha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can test web pages in IE 7.0 (and a variety of alternatives) using your default browser by visiting www.browsershots.org
- matx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Is it me or is it quicker to install it then using this method?
- xzuakdwn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My system rejected the IE7 beta 2 install, and this batch file works great.
- kayoti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Man. This is my first post and third visit to digg.com. First, I must say - I cannot believe the pointless posts people make. Secondly, this is neat to be able to test IE7 - but I did not enjoy the experience too much. Good article, but I think I will stick to Firefox for now.
- KillerJ59J, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7This old, and yes it really works. I use this so that I can test my sites in IE 6 and IE 7.
BTW, IE 7 does as bad or worse than IE 6 doe on the Acid 2 Test. (http://webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html) - giggins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Kinda nice to see that Microsoft has security in mind with IE7....but I still think Firefox blows it out of the water.
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5I hate it when people single me out as the only person duping posts on digg.com
http://digg.com/software/How_to_Run_IE_7_without_installing_it
Yeah, it happens. Please dont hate...commentrate. - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Another way to test IE7 without installing it is to just download and install your own spyware. At least you'll immediately know what you have to clean off to fix your system.
- cypre$$, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3This is great! IE7 would not install on my system, however, using this method it works flawlessly, or as flawlessly as an Microshaft product can work.
- Soldier, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4IE7 just added tabs, witch firefox had ages ago
- SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1All this talk of the internet have you all forgot about the puffer fish. Please feel free to read more http://divemad.com/fact_file_puffer_fish.htm
