- thekidder, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Let me be the first to say it....this list sucks.
What's with all the based-off-of-IE browsers? And what about IE itself? No reasonable competent person would argue that IE is one of the best web browsers...especially if you do any web development at all. And that doesn't even take into account all the WTFs in the other categories.
Sure, some of it is good, but most of it blows. - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13http://www.duggmirror.com
- LordTureis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Free and Open-Source software is _not_ freeware.
See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeware#Comparison_with_other_terms
Many of these (OpenOffice, Firefox, Gimp, Blender3D , Abiword, etc) are Free and Open-Source software, and therefore not freeware.
Please don't insult FOSS by calling it freeware and lumping it in there with the other freeware. Call it free (not Free) if you want, but not freeware.
Otherwise, a mediocre list that could be found in just about any top 300 most popular free software lists.
(and why the hell are you guys digging hiPpymIck down? He's making a good point.)
(and how does wallpaper qualify as software?) - RoshanK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10anybody else see the atomic ***** sync?
- mrboojangles04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8actually, it DOES say 'best 300 freeware programs'
i think that has something to do with how good the software is. - d722002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@RoshanK -- Well, you may never know when you need to sync up to the atomic *****... Just hope there's no worldwide shrinkage and everything should be alright.

- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Because open-source software *IS* freeware, as freeware is defined: Free software. Freeware doesn't have an ideology or anything else that is attached to OSS, it simply refers to software that doesn't cost any money.
So take your goddamn ideology and leave it the ***** out of this discussion. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I love how the website theme is all Vista-ish, but the search button is from the Tango icon theme.
Also, that PC Suite 602 isn't free, it's got a trial. - appletalk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7That's right *a* free software definition, not necessarily the universal one.
If he wants to call it free software (because free means with null cost), he can, and he doesn't need anyone point at the free software foundation definition. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Are you sure about that?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Another list :

But IE being there does bother me... it comes installed anyways, no reason to admit it's actually software. - nyls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or this dedicated freeware site with details & comments:

thanks for the tip man.
People. The site has NOT been hit by the dig effect.
They are just trying to avoid being hit by not letting anyone visit their site via diggs link.
I copied the link and opened it in a new/window tab, then refreshed about 2 or 3 times.
worked like a charm

- eponymous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am so tired of the FOSS is not freeware tirade and the resultant definition wars. FOSS is "free" (as in zero cost) and "software", which, before the invasion of the Stallmanistas, many if not most folks referred to as "freeware". This was in contrast to "shareware", commercial software, etc. Not in contrast to FOSS. Many of us who are older still commonly refer to zero cost software as "freeware", regardless of the agenda behind it. FOSS *is* freeware by the simplest, most common, and most logical definition of "freeware". I agree that not all freeware is FOSS, but the people who care already know that and the people who don't probably never will.

>Because open-source software *IS* freeware, as freeware is defined: Free software.
NO. Neither Free nor Open-source software implies gratuity (free). FOSS only means the source is made available (I simplify), that's all! You can sell your FOSS program for millions if you wish. Or give it for free (gratis), which is nice, but not an obligation.
@eponymous
>I am so tired of the FOSS is not freeware tirade and the resultant definition wars.
>FOSS is "free" (as in zero cost) and "software" [...]
NOOO! Please stop saying such blatantly wrong things. FOSS is NOT freeware. Freeware is Freeware, FOSS is FOSS. The existence of the term FOSS is due to the difference! If they were identical, FOSS would never be used.
FOSS does NOT imply free (gratis), it means that the source is made available (I simplify). The cost has nothing to do with it! It's true that most FOSS is free (gratis), still it's not a requirement. On the other hand, a free (gratis) software whose sources are not available is Freeware. That's all. Nothing that complicated.
> which, before the invasion of the Stallmanistas, many if not most folks referred to as "freeware".
Before the 'Stallmanistas' as you say, FOSS did NOT exist explicitedly. Why do you think Stallman created the GPL license?
> This was in contrast to "shareware", commercial software, etc. Not in contrast to FOSS.
Of course, FOSS could only exist after stallman drafted the GPL... (in fact it existed already since the beginning of computers, but missed a definition).
>Many of us who are older still commonly refer to zero cost software as "freeware",
As an older myself, I think you should know better.
>regardless of the agenda behind it.
Agenda? Do you really believe that most programmer who produce Free software have an agenda? Hint: they don't.
>FOSS *is* freeware by the simplest, most common, and most logical definition of "freeware".
NO. NO. NO. I repeat: FOSS has nothing to do with COST.

Seriously people, if you don't care about FOSS, that's OK, but, please, do not post such wrong information, especially while trying to pass it of as if you were experts, that's boring...

As for the list, I find it quite interesting, sure it's just another list, but in each new one I usually find one or two programs I had not heard of or tested before, and sometimes you have good surprises. - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1gotta add SharpDevelop for programmers out there.
