That's not the sorta of thing you give an alternative for. Realplayer and its format should die a cold, painful, lonely death. - kingofpenguins, on 04/29/2008, -12/+1547zip > all
- dukeochutney, on 04/29/2008, -20/+156winrar > winzip
- doshindude, on 04/29/2008, -15/+61Screw iTunes, Winamp's where it's at when it comes to ipod usage. and that's sad when Apple's official software sucks with its own products.
I wish there was an alternative to Windows Movie Maker....funny how we get all these cool applications for everything else, yet there hasn't been an open source/free video editing program made... - estvir, on 04/29/2008, -12/+53I wouldn't say avoid IE7 but rather use IE7Pro ( http://www.ie7pro.com/ ). Basically, imagine most of the most popular FF extensions rolled into 1 package that works incredibly well. Some people prefer the look of IE7 and other things so it's good for them but if you prefer FF, stick with that.
An app I came across not too long ago, Teracopy ( http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php). Basically, if you use XP or Vista you MUST install it, it's a replacement for the default 'copy' program in Windows. For me it sped up how faster things were copied (Cut off a third of the time it usually took me to copy my music, roughly 30GB), how fast the actual copying starts and a huge, huge thing people will love: you know how in Windows if there's an error of some sort during a copy it ceases the whole thing? With this it doesn't. Anyway, there's a ton of other things it does too.
And, the best [free] firewall is Comodo ( http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ ). It's feasy to use, has the best results in most firewall tests, etc. I actually don't have an AV app installed, just Comodo and a sound mind.
A good music alternative is musikCube ( http://www.musikcube.com/ ) or at least till the Exaile (Gnome equivalent of Amarok, I prefer it over Amarok to be honest -- http://www.exaile.org/ ) Windows port is better. If you're on Linux (Many of you should be), try Exaile. - StriderNemesis, on 04/29/2008, -0/+36I disagree a bit:
Some "experts" argue that Opera is actually safer than Firefox, and it has some nice features. While I like Firefox more, I think that Opera should have been there as an alternative to IE.
I don't know how the hell the JRE even deserved a mention; it's a great piece of software. Also, you can disable the tray icon by unchecking the option at Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous > Place Java icon in system tray.
Where the hell is ImgBurn? I've had many installations of CDBurnerXP crap out on me for no apparent reason. I think ImgBurn is a better and lighter alternative, although if it weren't for that little issue, CDBurnerXP would be an excellent piece of software in my book.
And finally, Avast!? Where the hell is Avira AntiVir? Not only has it beat the crap out of Avast! in published tests, but it also runs a lot faster. Here is a test published by AV-Test.org, although it's a little bit dated now:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2135092,00.as ... - Cornrider, on 04/29/2008, -1/+35It's true that Winrar owns Winzip BUT Winzip was there first and it's got 'sentimental' value for us who started using it a long time ago. Besides, Winzip was never evil like Real Player or many others.
- motang, on 04/29/2008, -13/+40Hmm wonder why Opera didn't make the list. I have been using the latest Beat and it's pretty good.
- Dumbledorito, on 04/29/2008, -3/+30If that's what Linux does to your personality, I'd go back to Win98 rather than develop that sort of hubris.
- ani625, on 04/29/2008, -5/+31I am NOT using ANY of these right now :/
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -2/+26Well make sure you continue to not use their suggestion for a limewire replacement, Frostwire . What a spyware ridden hunk of ***** that is.
- Lockhart, on 04/29/2008, -3/+23BIT TORRENT
- wiifm69, on 04/29/2008, -14/+33What a piece of ***** list. Come on lifehacker, that was the worst list written in ages.
- sloppychris, on 04/29/2008, -4/+21Why would you want to?
- rogerdonaldson, on 04/29/2008, -2/+18Generally a decent list. Obvious to anyone who's been a moderate power user for a year or two. But iTunes and Quicktime are MAJOR annoyances, not so-so annoyances. The stealth "you've got Safari installed" by-product of QT/iTunes updates would have had folks lynching the M$ crew. For Mac infractions, folks just take the little cup of Kool-Aid with a smile.
- skmice2, on 04/29/2008, -3/+17Yes, I wonder that myself - especially because they mentioned Safari at the end as a 'honorable' mention.
In general it is an excellent list, but they could have included more alternatives. These would me my additions:
- iTunes => XMPlay
- Windows Media Player => WMP Classic
- Outlook / Outlook Express => Mozilla Thunderbird or The Bat!
This would make the list more or less complete for me. - Zera, on 04/29/2008, -6/+19Do we really need lifehacker suggesting we use: Firefox, Media Player Classic, AVG, VLC, and Trillian.... meh, I guess when you start using your blog as your career, you get desperate for content at some point and really start scraping the bottom of the barrel for article ideas.
Not to mention, free copies of Nero come with every decent brand CD and DVD Burner. At $30 for burner and Software, how could anyone call that costly? - WhatsUpWithJack, on 04/29/2008, -11/+23DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -2/+13Dugg just because it told me how to cancel AOL.
- tnoy, on 04/29/2008, -0/+11What am I doing using Windows? Using the 3 prorietary applications i need for work. i've also been using Photoshop CS3 lately a lot, too.
Though, I'm not doing work right now, so I'm using Linux.. but the fact remains that Linux cannot replace Windows in all cases. - Crosshare, on 04/29/2008, -0/+10Dugg for Windows Media Player: WTF Interface
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -1/+11My issue with IE7 is the UI. It just doesn't feel right. The positioning of the stop button, and the refresh button, as well as the file, edit.. etc.. toolbar being turned off by default and when it is turned on, its position below the address bar, with the only way to change that to the old above the address bar being a manual registry change. It seemed very strange to me that Microsoft would mess so such with such a well known familiar UI. I actually still prefer the old IE6 for that exact reason. Maybe I'll check out IE7 pro, but its going to be a hard sell now that I already have firefox with its great add-ons.
- Makaveli604, on 04/29/2008, -14/+24Smug piece of *****. I haven't had a BSOD and I have used Windows since 3.1.
I decided to give Ubuntu a try because I couldn't find a windows disk.
I installed Ubuntu on my desktop. After several hours I had my printer working, and I told my wireless to ***** itself.
Gave it about ~2 months (with my laptop for games) and then gave up.
Running a pirated windows XP on it now, no issues and everything installed easily the first time.
Oh, have fun playing 95 percent of games. - doctechnical, on 04/29/2008, -4/+14"Smug piece of *****. I haven't had a BSOD and I have used Windows since 3.1."
Yeah, well 3.1 just dropped you back to DOS. - Gizza, on 04/29/2008, -0/+9I haven't seen a RealPlayer format for at least 5 years. And if I ever did I just wouldn't watch wotever it was.
- skmice2, on 04/29/2008, -8/+17Perhaps - but note that they are pointing our only free applications.
- zcreem, on 04/29/2008, -1/+101. Reason to drop Nero it's become major bloat ware, and is no longer reliable.
2. Reason to drop IE (any) easy, Adblock.
3. Reason to drop RM, none you never should have installed in the first place, unless your machine is over 5 years old.
4. Reason to drop Quicktime, see 1. and it has the added advantage of being bundle ware, one wrong click and you get i-tunes, with all its services and bloat.
5. Reason to drop this list, how many time do we need to read this on digg? - Daiken, on 04/29/2008, -0/+9Open Office is not a superior alternative to Microsofot Office. It's only big advantage is that it's free.
- grimward, on 04/29/2008, -1/+10Well, Vista has that functionality too now, which is one of the many million improvements that makes it superior to XP.
- SurlyDuff, on 04/29/2008, -1/+9umm...bittorrent is awesome for obscure music. You just need to get on the right trackers. What? Does somebody else smell waffles?
- Irfit, on 04/29/2008, -1/+9I used to be an iTunes user, but is such a memory hog. I stopped using it about 6 months ago and i won't go back. I use it just to refill the iPod. Foobar FTW.
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -1/+9For all those who complain AVG misses viruses, you're probably being infected with spyware which is not a virus but can be just as bad, (AVG has a seperate product for spyware, not free).
Solution, Spybot immunization. Spybot + AVG + Firefox = very good protection. - MacParrot, on 04/29/2008, -4/+11I find it ironic that you would call someone a smug piece of ***** in one sentence and then gloat about not paying for your preferred operating system in another.
- skrowl, on 04/29/2008, -1/+8Vista works great for me too, but you'll find a pile of people who have never even tried Vista that are happy to bash it here on Digg.
- Dumbledorito, on 04/29/2008, -6/+13Nero? Expensive?
Just about every install of that I've used came free with something (a drive or a new comp system).
Now Roxio... that thing is a royal pain for some reason. - Scrappy1850, on 04/29/2008, -3/+10playing games, how does crysis look on that linux box of yours?
- fullphaser, on 04/29/2008, -1/+87zip doesn't pester me about buying their application every time I fire it up, Winrar does.
- porkdanish, on 04/29/2008, -1/+8Do you not realize that MS provided a free compatibility pack that you can install to take care of the problem?
- init100, on 04/29/2008, -3/+10"Yes, people who use Linux have fun playing 95 percent of games ... with Wine."
Or they (like me) skip Wine and keep a Windows partition for games. Why use Wine if you have the real thing available? - Kyrra, on 04/29/2008, -1/+7There are some good points on the list, but a lot of bad ones at the same time. They listed some nice alternatives for some applications, but not all were superior.
- tmahmood, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6AVG 8 Free comes with anti-spyware now :p
- TheSabre, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6Just download the Office 2007 compatibility pack. It is a very small download and lets you view Office 2007 files in previous versions of Office.
- MCA2142, on 04/29/2008, -3/+9soulseek. but only for music.
http://www.slsknet.org/ - bryhhh, on 04/29/2008, -4/+10I think iTunes sucks on Windows, on the other hand it is definitely my music app of choice on my Mac. I'm of the opinion that applications should fit in with the look and feel of the native operating system, I can't stand using 'skinned' apps.
Oh, and for what it's worth: dugg story for 'Sumatra PDF', which is my PDF viewer of choice on Windows. - MacParrot, on 04/29/2008, -1/+7So Macs and OS X are just about the dock? It would have been more accurate if you had said "alternative to the WIndows Taskbar or a supplement of the taskbar",
RocketDock does look cool though - init100, on 04/29/2008, -3/+9"Microsoft rules majority of the market share."
The majority seldom, if ever, knows best. - Yazilliclick, on 04/29/2008, -1/+7Java is slower, more of a resource hog, constant updating and a system tray icon. .net is faster, not a resource hog, uses regular windows update mechanism which is not intrusive for updates which are fewer and does not by default place a stupid system tray icon.
Please point out why .net should be on the list as opposed to java. - Kokichi, on 04/29/2008, -0/+6Anyway to convert realmedia player files to avi or some other format? The only reason I have Real still installed on my computer is for two porn files I love...
