Waa waa. My FREE email account isn't working and they wont reply to me right away.- fkr3, on 12/06/2007, -1/+39Unpopular but true. If your email is critical then you shouldn't be using a free service you have 0 control over and no guarantees, or if you must use a free service then get a local mail client so you can maintain a copy of all your correspondance independently if something goes wrong.

Is there an ad-free Gmail I don't know about that you'd care to share with the rest of the class? Or would you like to retract your statement that it's free if I have to pay with my time to be annoyed by their ads?- afx1, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1https://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/editi ...

- lava, on 12/06/2007, -6/+4Turn off your extensions. A lot of the time these kinds of errors are because of extensions doing strange things with gmail. I had the same problem about a month ago, it turned up that the Sothink SWF downloader extension was the cause, not gmail.
- AROZ, on 12/06/2007, -4/+3And for me, Google is ***** up. I keep getting that damn "We're sorry...but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application" message, and I don't have any spyware/viruses. Damn you Google, Yahoo just doesn't cut it.
- jacquesm, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2this is not the first ***** in recent times on the part of google, not that long ago they had a massive issue with adsense (and they never really owned up to it, nor did they really fix it, it works now but the tracking data from that period is simply lost)
- doublsh0t, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Same thing happened to me a few months back--but i quickly realized I changed the time my GMAIL NOTIFIER checks for new messages from 1 minute to 0 minutes wondering how much more quickly I would be notified of new mail...and then it was disabled the next hour due to suspicion then I turned it off and was back in an hour. Just a thought.

- Wilson736, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1This happened to me about 2 years ago. After hundreds of e-mails, they never did anything. I lost a bunch of important e-mails and documents. I'm never going back to Gmail again.

- rawheadrex, on 12/06/2007, -4/+23From the thread over at Google Groups. Totally sucks.
I did think there was a pattern there, that relatively newer accounts are getting disabled (mine was less than week old... all my 1+ year accounts are doing fine, thank god), but apparently, at least some very old accounts are also getting nixed. Hmm.- hankosky, on 12/06/2007, -7/+9I had my account since 04. and now its useless

- JohnMusbach, on 12/06/2007, -62/+5Right out of the blue while sending a email to a mailing list I'm a
member of my account was disabled ([email address]). Aside from
personal family/school emails the only thing I use my email account
for is posting to some mac and linux mailing lists so I can't possibly
imagine why Google would want to disable my account. I have a sent a
inquiry to google regarding this event and unless I here back from
google (not holding my breath) I guess I'll just have to chalk this up
to a glitch in the gmail beta program. However I also wonder if one or
more accounts were causing some form of trouble on the server I was on
that triggered a mass disabling of accounts on the server the account
was on as such I would like to know, has anyone else's account been
disabled tonight? Very weird...

thank you for your informative post. I have no idea why your comment was dug down so severely. A double post -- I possibly do to digg.com website error. In any event, nonsense like this reminds me why I don't come here very much anymore. I think I will go over to Reddit and see what the real story is.

This is ridiculous.- afx1, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2if you had it longer, it would be less ridiculous
- jwalkercampbell, on 12/06/2007, -16/+5My account was only a few hours old and it got disabled. I was e-mailing someone and then when I hit "send" I got the error message. I closed the browser thinking that if I logged in again it would send. When I tried signing in, it kept saying that my username and password did not match. And then after the second try logging in I got the "your account has been disabled" message. I REALLY need to log into my account. ALL my e-mail is forwarded to this account. I purposefully created a Gmail account because I was having a hard time receiving messages that were forwarded to my hotmail account. GOOGLE, PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!! AND SOOOOOOOON!!!
- DiggzDE, on 12/06/2007, -10/+5Maybe that is why. Google only likes longterm loyal users. I've had my email since the private beta days and it works fine. what's your email address? I will send something to you to read about my coolness. Oh wait, I can't cuz your account has been disabled.
- surfing, on 12/06/2007, -1/+11Only a few hours old? Spammer.
- Ethree, on 12/06/2007, -10/+4Another account disabled. Right in the middle of working on my calendar I received a message saying my session had timed out and that I should log in to complete the calendar. Upon logging in, I received the message that the account was disabled with absolutely no reason! I've only had the account 5 days so I cannot imagine what I've done to be disabled???
- never2loud, on 12/06/2007, -17/+36This is a bunch of crap. I have 3 different email accounts forwarding to my Gmail account, which is the only one that'll update my iPhone mail correctly (most of the time, anyway) without having to pay $100 a year for a .mac account to the dicks at Apple, who can never seem to get enough of my money. Come on, google. You're the biggest company out there doing this. Get your ***** together, please....
- mporcheron, on 12/06/2007, -11/+23So, let me get this straight. You are using a FREE service with no guarantees as apposed to a service with guarantees, get upset when Google fails to meet the exceptions that you have of a service with no promises, and you think that suddenly you are in charge.
- Qumahlin, on 12/06/2007, -3/+10Couldn't have said it better myself. While I do feel sorry for those this is happening too, it's a free service...and should be treated as such meaning if you want accountability and priority support you better start using a pay service
- nastajus, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Money speaks louder than words.
- thailand1972, on 12/07/2007, -4/+8Everybody praises Gmail and says they use Gmail for their businesses (as a spam filter). All is good. When things ***** up, then you get the "well what did you expect, Gmail's free!". Too funny.
- p0ss, on 12/07/2007, -3/+9Google makes billions, their gmail service contributes to this. If nothing else, the brand loyalty created by gmail generates millions for gmail.
Personally I don't consider gmail to be free at all. I am giving them my time and my business. I could just as easily use hotmail or one of the others, but i use google, and they profit from it. - gmprunner, on 12/07/2007, -0/+5THANK YOU. If this were anyone else but Google, none of you people would be trying to stand up for Google by explaining that since it's free Google can somehow get away with screwing up. We all know that if, oh, I don't know, Hotmail did this, you guys would on it like starving dogs on roadkill. But since it's Google, I guess it's perfectly acceptable.

- stoanhart, on 12/06/2007, -3/+15Um, I'm pretty sure Google engineers are hard at work figuring this out. After all, it's bad for the company. Swamping the secretaries with thousands of phone calls will not accelerate anything.

- Chickenlip, on 12/06/2007, -1/+8As a web developer myself, I think this problem has nothing to do with web development, but their backend service architecture.
My confidence in Steamthrower is starting to wear off. - gwinerreniwg, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4LOL - If you were any kind of developer, you would realize that even the best service providers have outages from time to time. I'm sure you've never had an app crash in a production environment?
- frerf, on 12/06/2007, -5/+24mine too-- & i've multiple accounts forwarding to it that I can't get into, including work-related... perhaps I shouldn't rely on a free service for stuff thats so important but .... its google.... its supposed to work...

- skrowl, on 12/06/2007, -4/+8Here's the full headers (Some info XXXX'd out):
- skrowl, on 12/06/2007, -2/+6Woops, you just wanted the email address... mail-support@google.com
- hankosky, on 12/06/2007, -4/+5what was the email address they emaild you from?
- cspowers, on 12/06/2007, -7/+5My account is also disabled. I've been using it for about a year and a half and have never had any trouble accesseing my account. But now I cannot get my e-mail, my google docs (which I use heavily) or my google calendar which I LIVE BY.
very frustrating!!!!!- p0ss, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1This is exactly why I am so wary of the concept of an online OS and online apps in general. the net is not reliable, outages happen, lines go down, I'll be moving back to thunderbird.
- tyndago, on 12/06/2007, -4/+9My account is disabled since yesterday. My googlepages , my picasa , my adwords, my blogger. This is very frustrating. I have filled in the forms. I hope its back up soon.
I really enjoyed my Gmail experience , but its good to hear that a lot of other people are having the same issue. Well not good, but comforting that I didn't do something wrong. - tinyxl, on 12/06/2007, -10/+3looks like my uncle got his account back. i guess they fixed it. thanks google (+digg)
- gwinerreniwg, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6Thanks for letting us know, we were holding our collective breaths, and were about to light votive candles.
- Bamborzled, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3Why does every Digger have to assume that their community is a driving force that can influence everything? Google's not dumb; they probably knew about the problems when everybody with the problems started contacting them, and they were probably working to solve it.
- Scopitone, on 12/06/2007, -2/+11Our greatest fears realized!
- estacado, on 12/06/2007, -2/+4"We are just gmail users not gmail support."
- seandfeeney, on 12/06/2007, -1/+60Ohh.. So that is why gmail is still beta!
- daok, on 12/06/2007, -11/+3If it would have been Hotmail, the number of Digg would have been so much higher and a lots more complain... You see, no one is better than other, Google is not so perfect...
- jcaino, on 12/06/2007, -5/+3had mine since late '04 (11/29/04) and no problems here.... *crossing fingers*
- JasonsLan, on 12/06/2007, -2/+5this happened about 2 years go to, and the problem lasted a few days.. it corrected itself (or google corrected the problems) and everything was back to normal with no major data loss.. So far my accounts have had no problems, but both of them are several years old.. I'd just wait it out, it'll be better soon..
- tinyxl, on 12/06/2007, -2/+5this has been a good lesson...ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR EVERYTHING. i think i'll have my gmail forward a copy of all incoming emails to an extra non-gmail account, that way if one account screws up, at least i'll have my emails on the other one.
- sketec, on 12/06/2007, -2/+4I do just the opposite. I use gmail to archive my paid for email account. Lesson here: Don't rely on free email services.
- jonshipman, on 12/07/2007, -1/+1indeed - because with paid services you can always threaten to pull your business away if they don't get their act together
- zongamin, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1What makes you think that a paid for service is any more reliable? The only difference is that if they screw up and lost your email, you also lost money.
Don't waste your money.

- whitehatlurker, on 12/06/2007, -3/+15Might be fixed. Posting on the forum says:
