- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55xur was trying to help you out with bandwidth. But in this case i am going to have to agree with you. His "mirror" is not a mirror at all, but a ripoff of your content, with a bunch of extra ads tacked on to help out his pocketbook. Furthermore xur, why have you posted this "mirror" in response to a comment dealing with the fact that songbird is based upon VLC? Could it possibly be because this was the first comment in the thread, and by replying to it you get to stick you mirror (ads) at the top?
Stop abusing digg's comment system, *****. - atariby, on 10/12/2007, -11/+55I would prefer if you ask permission before "mirroring" my content and putting ads on it, isnt that basically stealing?
- Lutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I love iTunes but it just doesn't support enough formats. Songbird is really interesting because it uses vlc, and it's open source too! :)
Firefox anv VLC, the best of both worlds? - Javock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22ads? what ads?
ahhh... the bliss of ad-block! - gimmegimmenow, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29@Atariby
You should of just linked to the songbird site directly instead of your cheesie blog. Don't be pissed off if it gets mirrored since the info can be obtained on the songbird site. - noclips, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Look at xur17's past comments. Seems he likes to mirror sites with the addition of ads on the top of the page. Seems wrong to me without permission as well.
Why not just use Coral? - marlobello, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Is it me or is the "songbird" passing gas in every picture?
- mDot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11amaroK is not a KDE only app. It runs perfectly under Gnome, fluxbox, or whatever other window manager you prefer.
/digg for something to compete for amaroKs strangle hold on my music library. - nitsuj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12
Helpful mirror - bollox. Try clicking on the screenshot and see what happens. Mirroring and then fudging all the links to point at ads/pop-up scummage.
Digg vulture. - benwaterworth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9yeah as a mac user i'm hoping so.
although i do have an ipod i'd be really interested to see what this software can do.
dugg as this may be the first non-itunes music (organising) software i'll install. - toasterweasel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12This xur17 needs to be banned from Digg. Just look at all his comments, there just cruddy mirrors linking to his cruddy site with a bunch of cruddy ads. Cruddy!
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10If you guys are looking for a really good open source media player, check out amarok. The interface is VERY good, its database scales quite well, and it has support for podcasts, and the ipod.
- munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8do the improvements include usable speed? I tried the old version and it was s l o w
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If you're going to link to a blog, link to THEIR blog:
http://www.songbirdnest.com/jkoshi/blog - kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Seriously, forget all the rest. Amarok is where it's at. Their motto is "rediscover your music" and it couldn't be more accurate.
In a music app it's got the best set of features I've seen, it's significantly better than the competition. High usability and slick looks too.
It is a kde app, but you don't have to run a complete kde system to use it. I'm on Gentoo running fvwm2, and I installed the minimum set of kde libraries for Amarok, and it runs great. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This should be good for mac users who might want to try other mp3 players. It's always nice to have more options, maybe they could integrate drm free online music stores like bleep.
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm really hoping for iPod support directly through Songbird, especially through Linux. If that comes through, plus intuitive podcasting support, I'll finally be able to ditch my Windows partition completely.
- TA_Superman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I dunno about the linux binary. Amarok has alot of these features built-in already and more. Only thing amarok doesn't have is the music store options. But it basically has everything else like dynamic playlists, you can sort your music however you like, it also makes recommendations and keeps track of your favorite songs as well as last.fm integration. Plus it has a bunch of scripts like lyrics, web control etc. Don't really see a reason to switch from Amarok to Songbird.
Oh yeah and it also does have Ipod support plus it looks really nice even if you use it with GNOME - tophfisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Evolution has had Exchange support, for free, for years and years...
- spellcheckd, on 06/28/2009, -0/+4iPod support here: http://www.windjay.com/
- super_duper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Perhaps that is his "song"
- JW00000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ketsugi
You can just install the KDE libraries, it won't affect your Gnome environment. When you start amaroK, or any other KDE application, the libraries will be called and amaroK will run, just like it would run in KDE. KDE (and Gnome) applications are compatible accross the different desktop environments.
In fact, you can even install KDE and Gnome next to each other, if you install the kde package. But you probably don't need that, now... - gollo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Better yet get amarok 1.4 It has built in ipod support now plus it's the best jukebox software out there. Period.
- faddat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Amarok is a really great Audio Player and manager. As others have mentioned, however, amaroK only works on Linux, which is a problem if you (like me) have to use an exchange server for work. MS exchange has locked me out of my OS of choice, even at home. For that matter, is evolution finally exchange-compatible?

"This xur17 needs to be banned from Digg"
Even if you can't ban him, go through the comments attached to his account, and mod them all down. Being universally buried is about the same as being banned. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I love the Songbird application and honestly I can't wait to see what's coming in the next version. I don't use iTunes.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It strikes me that this will be another situation where Linux and Mac users will always find themselves behind Windows development. I will test Songbird but stick with Banshee or Rhythmbox.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Unless you use iTunes. This software doesn't offer anything I want that iTunes doesn't have. I'm not saying it isn't cool, but iTunes = EASY.
- dragazis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the only thing I'm worried about is how fast it will work. I'm not trying to shoot it down in any way, but just out of curiosity does it work fast, slow, or really slow on windows and is it a resource hog?
- trashlikeyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I give a *****!!!!
- escheppa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3songbird has one slick interface
- albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3based on the instability and bugs in 0.1, I kind doubt 0.2 will be ready for my own full-time use, but I'm really looking forward to the day when I can replace itunes with songbird and install some sweet extensions....
- lyrics and wikipedia lookup ala amarok
- hymn-like extensions to get rid of drm
- ipod connectivity
- torrent and p2p support
i could go on and on... - UrbenLegend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hopefully they put in ipod support. That would be awesome.
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ITunes can do everything except bit torrent. If songbird adds bit torrent I'm in.
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Use gtkpod. It works great.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ehh, amarok freezes on me all the time in Ubuntu, I like gtkpod though
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yeah, it would be definitely a positive thing, were it not for the ads, but I think we can call this spam.
- RunLevelZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes that is all true if you are a Linux user but this app is / will be totally cross platform and I for one am all for that. Also, no one is telling you to switch. Linux does need it's own killer apps I agree but I like to be uniform across Linux, Mac and Windows. Yes I run them all. The IDE I use to develop in must also be cross platform as well, basically any app that I use a lot, VLC, Firefox, WingIDE, Open Office and now I can add songbird to the list. I have to say that Amarok is the most inovative I have seen and is my choice for the best Linux music app.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been waiting for the Mac version. Even an unstable one...
- MyNameIsFred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those wanting Ogg Vorbis in iTunes check out Ogg Drop http://www.nouturn.com/oggdrop/index.php I've never used it, but I've seen it mentioned.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yea, I would tend to agree, but since I have not tried song bird I can't say anything either way. I just recently moved my mp3 collection from my XP system to my Mac so that I could sync with iTunes on there. The main motivation being Google calendar trickling down to my iPod via iCal, and my Address Book being sync'd to the iPod as well. I don't honestly see what benefits there are to using songbird. I do like the idea that it is open source, and it will support extensions, but the only thing I feel is blatently missing from iTunes is ogg vorbis support.
I am open minded to checking it out but I don't yet see any compelling reasons to do so. What are the 'killer features' for it? - diggn_it, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I already have a firefox extension called foxytunes which lets me control Itunes through my browser. I understand that Songbird is much more than that, but is it really neccesary?
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i dunno last time i tried it i was kind of dissapointed that it was sluggish, its just not a snappy quick program on my computer. But then again it could have just been an old build i dunno its worth another shot one of these days.
but im not a fan of the massive gui on an audio player anyways... so maybe that was my problem - Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2does anyone know if this songbird has iPod support?
- UrbenLegend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is pretty awesome, thanks for the link.
By the way, when the site says "built from Firefox's browser engine" does it mean the interface is written in XUL and its using Gecko to render it? - ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unfortunately I'm an Ubuntu (Gnubuntu?) user. What are the repercussions (other than the increased amount of used disk space) of installing the KDE libraries in conjunction with my existing Gnome desktop environment?
- Gizem82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Songbird is a great app. Can't wait for 0.2
- tricheco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But what about patents and stuff? iTunes is heavily patented and this is definitely an iTunes lookalike.
Well I like it a lot anyway :-), I've already installed and used it - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes we do mind..... Stop stealing content. I think Digg have deleted you anyway.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also try banshee: http://banshee-project.org/Main_Page
